SEPTEMBER 2014
From The Executive Dire ctor...
It is hard to believe we are drawing near the end of our short Summer though
we look forward to the changing of the seasons as we approach September.
We can hope for beautiful colors and cooler temperatures.
We are looking for your input in our Annual Satisfaction Survey. This survey
is very important to us as it tallies your response and compares us to other
facilities like us. We utilize this tool to develop our department goals for 2015.
We would appreciate if you would take a few minutes on September 4th or 5th
from the hours of 9:00am to 4:00pm in the First Floor Lounge to fill out your
survey. For the couples in the building we would appreciate both of you taking
the time to complete. On average it will take up to six weeks to receive the
results in which I will share with the Resident Council at a general meeting.
Thank you in advance for your input and cooperation.
September is the month to vote at Lexington for your Resident Council Members. We are very fortunate to have individuals who want to be part of the
Penny Montgomery community and participate in Resident Council. We have had a successful year

FROM THE HEART & SOLE…
Chair Aerobics? Take a seat
and put your feet UP… and
DOWN…and UP…and
DOWN. It’s true. In chair
exercise classes, participants
are able to obtain a cardiovascular workout while
seated! By moving in a
continuous manner, such as
marching in place or moving
your arms as if you are
conducting an orchestra, you
can gain aerobic benefits.
The Heart & Sole Fitness
classes provide instruction
not only in aerobics, but also
joint mobility and strength
training. Balance work can
be done with chair assistance along with modified
standing exercise.
Sufferers of chronic joint pain
sometimes think they can’t
exercise or risk further injury
or inflammation. But studies
in the past 10 years have
shown that exercise actually
improves joint pain and
movement. The reality is
“use it or lose it.” Besides
improving circulation, exercise can help those with joint
problems by keeping the joint
moving, strengthening supporting muscles and increasing range of motion and flexibility. “No matter what your
level of disability, you can be
more fit” says Judy Piette, a
physical therapist in
Riverdale, Ga. “Doing simple exercises from a chair will

allow you to start small and work your
way up.” The Heart & Sole Fitness instructors can also suggest modifications
or ways to make your workout more
challenging. Do something good for
yourself and exercise with Heart &

IRS UPDATES PHONE SCAMS WARNING
The IRS is again warning the
public about phone scams that
continue to claim victims all
across the country. In these
scams, thieves make unsolicited
phone calls to their intended victims. Callers fraudulently claim
to be from the IRS and demand
immediate payment of taxes by
a prepaid debit card or wire
transfer. The callers are often
hostile and abusive.
To avoid becoming a victim of
these scams, you should know:
♦ The IRS will first contact
you by mail if you owe taxes,
not by phone.
♦ The IRS never asks for
credit, debit or prepaid card
information over the phone.
♦ The IRS never insists that
you use a specific payment
method to pay your taxes.
♦ The IRS never requests immediate payment over the
telephone.
♦ The IRS will always treat
you professionally and courteously.
If you get a phone call from
someone claiming to be from the
IRS, here’s what you should do:
♦ If you know you owe taxes
or you think you might owe
taxes, call the IRS at 800-829
-1040. IRS employees can
help you with a payment issue if you owe taxes.
♦ If you know you don’t owe
taxes or don’t think that you
owe any taxes, then call and
report the incident to TIGTA at
800-366-4484.
♦ If scammers have tried this
scam on you, you should
also contact the Federal
Trade Commission and use
their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please
add “IRS Telephone Scam”
to the comments of your
complaint.
If you feel like you have been
a victim of this or any other
type of scam, please see Renee
or Laura in the Main Office to
assist you on this matter.

BILL HELMUTH: “ NELSON MANDELA’S SOUTH AFRICA”
Britain established colonial roots
in South Africa since the 17th
century, where they made the
original Africans outcasts in
their own country. Strict State
laws were ruthlessly enforced to
give the British ultimate control
over the Blacks and Coloureds
(mixed race). Mandela grew up
in this repressive climate of
strict White domination. His civ-
il and political activism landed
him in harsh jails for 27 years.
With increasing internal race
riots and international pressure,
Mandela was released in 1991 to
become South Africa's first democratically elected President. Bill
Helmuth takes you through this
amazingly beautiful and rich
country that still struggles with
the long-time challenges of na-
tion-building, severe economic
issues, and civil unrest to
explore Nelson Mandela's
influential legacy.

STACY’S TAVERN TOUR
LEXINGTON LINE STAFF
Stacy's Tavern is a historic Wayside Stagecoach
Inn in the village of Glen Ellyn. Moses Stacy
often opened his home as a boarding house for
passing travelers so when he constructed his new
home in 1846 he opened it as a wayside inn. For
50 cents guests could overnight: a night which
included two meals and enough hay for two
horses. At the inn they could wash with water from
the indoor tavern well or warm themselves near
the cast-iron stove. Stacy's was limited by law to
allowing only five travelers per bed. The home
was built in a modified Greek revival with
handmade bricks.
