What is the House of Welcome?
The House of Welcome (HOW) works with asylum seekers and refugees living in the Sydney
community. HOW provides housing, food aid, financial assistance and other caseworker services.
The House of Welcome does not discriminate on gender, race, religion or age. HOW clients are
often not eligible for government housing, Centrelink benefits and affordable medicine because
they are asylum seekers.
We are open from 10am-3pm on Monday – Friday.

TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING SERVICES (TIS)
Translating and Interpreting Services (TIS) are available to everyone
anytime that you need to use an interpreter on the phone.
Call 131 450 and ask for an interpreter who speaks your language.
For example ‘Korean’ or ‘Urdu’.
Please be aware that there is a cost to this service – it will cost the
same as a national phone call.
Free document translation service
The Australian Government also provides a free document translation service through TIS
National, for permanent residents and new citizens of Australia. Permanent residents are able to
have their personal documents translated into English during the first two years in Australia.

No Interest Loan Scheme – NILS: Money Loan
A No Interest loan is for people with low wages to assist with a variety
of different needs. Each NILS office will have restrictions on what the
loan can be used for
An average NILS loan is approximately, $300-$1200 and is paid back in
12-18 month period.

Are you on a low income, e.g. Centrelink or a health care card?
Have you lived in your local postcode area for at least the past six months?
Can you afford to repay the loan over a 12 – 18 month period?
Are you unable to qualify for other affordable finance?

English Classes for Refugees / Migrants
AMEP
The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) provides English
language classes throughout Australia. The program
provides a minimum of 510 hours of free lessons and child
care.
Eligibility
You may be eligible for free English lessons, if you:







are a newly arrived migrant, refugee or humanitarian entrant from overseas
are at least 18 years old
have a less than functional level of English (beginner)
arrived in Australia after 1 July 1991
