cation, an internationally
recognized mark of excellence for green building design, construction,
operations and maintenance.
The Bushnell Building is on the National
Register of Historic
Places, and James Lagos
notes that, “The restoration is being done to the
exacting standards of
the National Parks Service, the Ohio Historical
Preservation Office and
the Springfield Historic
Landmarks
Commission.”
Last fall, it was discovered that the elaborate, decorative cornice
at the top of the building was showing the
wear and tear of its age.
Iron rods supporting the
cornice were badly corroded, and although the
structure was not in imminent danger of collapse, the time had come
to make repairs. The cornice extends out 45 inches from the building, and
stands nine to 10 feet in
height, featuring elaborate terra cotta figures
including about 35 lion
heads, as well as Greek
key designs and French
fleur de lis, all of which
were carefully removed
last fall and taken to the
building’s basement for
restoration work.
The corroded iron
supports have now been
replaced with high-quality stainless steel that will
never rust. Even the bolts
are made of this same
material, to ensure that
the restored cornice will
stand the test of time.
Thanks to the early arrival of spring, workers
have already been busy
atop the Bushnell Building, putting a sealer on
the terra cotta to protect
it from the elements.
Just one step in the
overall restoration of the
Bushnell Building, the
cornice work alone has
required an investment
of more than half a million dollars. And Lagos
is quick to note that,
“Those lions are not paying us a nickel of rent.”
But he also has no doubt
that the restoration of the
cornice was vital, and
that in addition to being
the largest public artwork
in the region, the cornice
is part of “the very soul
of the building.”
Lagos is grateful that
all of the building’s tenants have been extremely
cooperative during the
long-term construction
process, and that they appreciate the value of being in a unique, historic
building. Space is also
available for new tenants
to move into the building.
In 2011, James and
Nike Lagos were honored by the Ohio National
Road Association as the
winners of the Milestone
Preservation Award, for
their “steadfast commitment to and investment
in the preservation and
revitalization of downtown Springfield through
the restoration and rehabilitation of the historic
Bushnell Building, located on...the original route
of the National Road.”

On Tuesday, March
13, 2012 an accidental
house fire started that
rendered Jessica and
friend Chris Lemmon unconscious.
A firefighter saved
both of their lives, but
they are both in critical
condition at the Wexner
Medical Center SICU in
Columbus, Ohio.
From the Columbus
Dispatch:

of her body. Battalion
Chief Michael Fowler
said she was found on
the floor near a couch in
the apartment’s living
room, which is where the
fire started. Lemmon has
burns over 20 percent of
his body. He was found
on the floor in a back
bedroom. A cat escaped
the apartment and was
being cared for by another resident, Fowler said.
Jessica and Chris still
suffer from third degree
burns and smoke inhalation. We ask that you
pray for their recovery.
Her recovery will take
several months, but what
happens after she gets
out of the hospital? She
will need money to help
her buy new things like
clothes, a kitchen dinette
and a bed. She will need
help paying rent. She will
need help buying food.
Her family is hoping
you can help Jessica get
her life back together.
With a little help from
many, she will not have
to face this difficult time
alone.

A New Approach To Outdoor Living Spaces
(NAPSI)—An
increasing number of
homeowners are discovering that the comforts
of home are no longer
confined to indoor space.
Fresh air, places to gather and room for play outdoors are high on the list
of must-have amenities.
In fact, a recent survey
by “Better Homes and
Gardens” revealed that
68 percent of homeowners consider outdoor living areas a top priority.
When you want to
make the most of an
open-air living space,
the possibilities can be
as wide open as the great
outdoors.
• Take a whole-yard
approach.
Incorporate
outdoor activities on all
four sides of your home
and select fence products
that give your home the
best curb appeal from
every angle. CertainTeed
offers a streamlined color palette that lets homeowners enjoy a picketstyle fence in their front
yard and a privacy fence
in the backyard without
compromising outstanding curb appeal.

Harvard Medical School,
spending time outdoors
reaps important health
benefits-boosting vitamin D, reducing stress
and enhancing your
overall mood. Use your
outdoor living area as a
place to exercise, play
with your dog or recruit
your neighbors for a
baseball game.
• Consider a staycation. With a growing

form outdoor areas into

Integrate sporting activities, such as volleyball or
croquet, into your backyard. Rent a projector for
an outdoor movie night.
Grab a tent and build a
campfire.
• Design your space
with the environment top
of mind. Take some time
to research the products
that will make up outdoor living areas. For
example,

vinyl and fiber cement
siding are backed by a
life- cycle assessment for
a comprehensive look at
the environmental impact of manufacturing,
transporting and installing a product.
• Enjoy more downtime. Investing in durable, long-lasting products
means less maintenance
and hassle down the
road. For example, EverNew LT decking comes
with a 25-year stain and
fade warranty, so you
can permanently cross
painting and staining off
your to-do list.

Is Your Home Air Conditioner
Ready For Spring And Summer?
(StatePoint) Temperatures are on the rise, but
that doesn’t mean your energy bill needs to increase
too. There are a number of
ways you can keep your
home cool and your energy
bills in check this season.
Is your air conditioner
operating optimally? If you
have a central air conditioning system, it’s important to get it checked by an
HVAC/R professional. Do
some comparison shopping
-- special deals are easy to
come by on seasonal preventative maintenance. Be
advised, however, that the
expertise of HVAC/R technicians can vary widely.
Though the HVAC/R
industry does not require
technicians to take mandatory competency tests, you
can help ensure a job well
done by opting for a technician certified by North
American Technician Excellence (NATE), the nation’s largest independent,
non-profit
certification
body for HVAC/R technicians.
NATE-certified
technicians are qualified to
properly install and service
equipment, which translates to maximum home
comfort and energy savings.
Once you know your
air conditioning system is
running efficiently, there
are several things you can
do to keep energy bills to a
minimum:
• Keep air conditioner
units clear of plants and
debris. Obstructing airflow
will reduce the unit’s efficiency.
• Raise the thermostat.
Each degree saves a percentage off your cooling
energy bill.
• Check air filters every couple of weeks and
change them at least twice
during the season, or as directed by the manufacturer.
• Review last year’s
energy bills. If your cooling costs are drastically
higher this year, a qualified
HVAC/R technician can
help diagnose any problems.
Don’t forget, even the
most eco-friendly, highefficiency products and appliances can waste money
and energy if they’re not
installed, serviced and
maintained properly. By
working with certified
technicians, homeowners
can have confidence that
their HVAC/R equipment
is delivering on the energy
efficiency promised.

Help For Your Best Lawn And Yard Ever
(NAPSI)—There’s
good news for homeowners who want the
grass to grow greener on
their side of the fence.
Throughout
May,
lawn, garden and equipment experts will provide free, one-on-one
advice on everything
from how to control
pests and finally win the
battle against weeds to
troubleshooting a lawn
mower that won’t start.
“We’ll help everyone who calls and take
as long as necessary to
get homeowners the an-
NAPSI Photo
swers they need,” says
Trey Rogers, an internationally known expert
on lawn and yard care
and leader of the hotline, which is sponsored
by Briggs & Stratton
Corporation.
For example, if your
grass is brown or dying where it should be
green, he advises, there
may be a simple solution.
1. Can you blame it
on the dog? The nitrogen
in dog urine can burn
your lawn and cause a
widespread brown patch
problem. You can create a special gravel or
mulch area and train
Fido to go there.
2. Is your mower
blade dull? Dull blades
tear rather than cleanly
cut the grass, which can
weaken and damage the
lawn. Have the blade
sharpened once a year.
3. Did you spill fertilizer or overfeed your
lawn? Too much fertilizer is a well-known
grass-burning culprit.
Always follow package
instructions when applying fertilizer. If your
spreader drops too much
in one place, water that
spot on the lawn generously.
4. What about too
much water? If you
overwater or if water
pools in certain areas
on your lawn, you can
drown the grass roots,
causing areas to die out.
Survey your lawn for
dips you want to avoid
dousing.
5. How do I grow
grass in the shade? In
deep shade, put down
mulch instead. In partial
shade, seed the area in
the spring and fall, when
leaves don’t block the
sunlight.
From May 1 to 31,
anyone can get a free online or phone consultation with a lawn, garden
or equipment expert on
any problem by visiting
www.YardSmarts.com
or calling 1-866-YARDTIPS (1-866-927-3847).
Photo submissions are
welcome if the problem
is difficult to describe.
In addition, every
Friday during the month
of May, experts will be
available for livechats to
share information more
broadly with homeowners. The top lawn and
garden questions will be
posted on the website,
www.yardsmarts.com,
where you can also find
expert advice and information related to yard
care and equipment.
The Yard Smarts
Hotline is sponsored
by Briggs & Stratton,
the largest maker of engines for outdoor power
equipment.
If getting your yard
in the best shape ever
isn’t enough motivation
to check out the hotline,
the company will give
away a $300 gift certificate each week to one
homeowner to purchase
a new lawn mower or
other needed yard care
equipment.

Fat grabbers are a
new term you’ll be hearing and it does make
sense. As the name says,
Fat Grabbers are made
up of food supplements
formulated to help remove fat and cholesterol. Both are the risk
factors of cardiovascular
disease. Fat Grabbers
contain Psyllium, Guar
gum, (both soluble fi-
bers), Lecithin (fat remover and emulsifier)
and Chickweed (an herb
traditionally used to dissolve body fats.)
Psyllium Hulls is a
fine bulk and forms a gel
in liquids that expands
and acts a soothing,
scrubbing and lubricating agent in the digestive system. This food
has been proven to lower
LDL cholesterol. Guar
Gum is somewhat like
Psyllium absorbs and lu-
bricates the system in its
endless war against cholesterol and fats.
Lecithin can move
fatty substances and dissolves fats and toxins in
the blood when nothing
else can or will. Lecithin
along with Chickweed
constitutes the finest pair
of carbo-burners and

kingdom.

In Springfield
I think he really had a
chance to get to know
our community better,
what we’re accomplishing and where we are
going.
That afternoon, the
Speaker was joined by
another individual who
could have a lot of influence on what happens to
our community.
Dan Ustian, president, chairman and CEO
of Navistar, made his
first visit to the Springfield plant since he was
named president in 2004.
Both he and Speaker
Boehner toured the
Navistar plant and spoke
with company and union
representatives
about
Mike McDorman
Greater Springfield
received visits from two
very influential individuals last week.
As you know, U.S.
Speaker of the House,
John Boehner, spoke at
a luncheon we hosted
on Friday at Wittenberg
University. We had a
great turnout - more than
300 individuals - and
Navistar, the Speaker and the CEO
the new truck lines, the
new flexible production
plan and the successful
collaboration between
company and union representatives.
This is significant.
For years the Springfield
plant was not looked
upon very favorably
by corporate officials
in Chicago. This visit,
which included a joint
presentation by company and union officials,
was the plant’s opportunity to reverse the former negative stereotype
and show officials that
this plant can not only
handle more volume but
can do it at a high level
and in an efficient way.
Springfield
plant
manager Jim Rumpf said
he was excited to have
both the CEO and the
Speaker of the House
visit the plant on the
same day. He was satisfied that the tour went
well.
As a result, both
Speaker Boehner and
Ustian received a better
understanding of what is
working in Springfield.
More importantly they
saw the potential for
growing these very significant jobs in our community.
Speaker
Boehner
went on to tour Pentaflex, a company that is a
perfect example of how
both large and smaller
manufacturers are experiencing an upswing
in Springfield. While at
the facilities, he held a
roundtable discussion
on the needs of manufacturing in a global,
ultra-competitive environment.
Before he left town,
the Speaker attended a
small reception at the
Heritage Center. It was
a great opportunity to
show off the recent additions to our downtown, such as our new
hospitals, National Road
Commons and the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative
Arts & Conference Center.
It was also an opportunity for us to learn
a little more about him,
about his longtime
friendship with our former congressman, Dave
Hobson, what he hopes
to accomplish in Washington and how we can
benefit by having him as
our new representative
in Congress next year.
I left the event with
the impression that
Speaker Boehner will
be accessible to us. And
that he does care about
this very important community that will anchor
the northern part of his
district.
Have a great Chamber day!

Defining Moments
By Penny Reeves
Psalms 40
I waited patiently and
expectantly for the Lord; and
He inclined to me and heard
my cry.
He drew me up out of a
horrible pit [a pit of tumult
and of destruction], out of
the miry clay (froth and
slime), and set my feet upon
a rock, steadying my steps
and establishing my goings
And He has put a new
song in my mouth, a song
of praise to our God. Many
shall see and fear (revere and
worship) and put their trust
and Confident reliance in the
Lord.
Have you ever been so
far down in your life that you
felt like there was no way
out? Does it seem like everything is crashing in on you?
Does your life feel like it is
out of control? Does it seem
like you have everything and
still feel very empty?
The psalmist David often
spoke of feeling like he was
falling into a pit and having
to cry out to the Lord. I don’t
know what pit you may be
in, and you may think there
is no way out, but I have
good news that when you cry
out to the Lord He is faithful
to answer.
The adversary has been
designed to keep you so far
down and into deep depression that you think nothing
good is going to come your
way. He wants to keep you
miserable and hopeless. I am
here to tell you that he is a
liar and the truth is not in
him. I say to you cry upon
the name of the Lord and let
him set you free from the pit
of hell. David did, and he
set his feet upon a rock. This
day set your feet upon the
rock and put a new song in
your mouth and begin praising your Father for He has
set you free.
Today is a new day and
start it out by praising the
name of the Lord.
Today You Can Touch the World!

What Easter Means to Me
Doug Apple
Here is what Easter
means to me.
Oops, I’ve only said
one thing so far, and already somebody’s annoyed with me for using
the word “Easter.”
Yes, I’ve heard for
years about the pagan
roots of the word Easter,
but language is fluid, just
ask Fred Flintstone who
sang about having a “gay
old time.” The meaning and connotation of
words can change over
time.
For me, Easter has al-
ways meant the story of
the death and the resurrection of Christ. It was
the same for my parents
and my grandparents
and who knows how
far back you’d have to
go before you ran into
someone who thought
Easter meant anything
but “He’s alive!”
I remember sitting in
church with a bunch of
family members singing those great hymns
of Easter such as “Christ
the Lord is Risen Today,”
and “Christ Arose.” I remember Dad putting a
big cross in our yard and
draping a purple cloth
over it at Easter. Yes, we
did Easter baskets and
Easter eggs, and there
was never any doubt that
it had anything to with
anything other than celebrating the awesome resurrection of Jesus Christ
from the dead.
So the word Easter
may have some funky
origins, but to me it stirs
up nothing but a thrill in
my soul of the crowning
moment of our Lord’s
work here on earth.
And now, here is
what Easter means to me
– and I will simplify it
into three categories.
First of all, it means
forgiveness.
Ephesians 1:7 says
we have redemption
through the blood of
Christ, “the forgiveness
of sins according to the
riches of His grace.”
Jesus shed His blood
as He offered Himself up
as the perfect sacrifice
for our sins. He paid the
price for our forgiveness.
That means, through
Him, my sins are forgiven! I don’t have to live
under a burden of guilt
or shame. I am clean
through Christ! Though
my sins were as scarlet,
they have been washed
whiter than snow.
And that leads me
to the second thing that
Easter means to me.
Forgiveness makes it
possible for me to have
a relationship with my
heavenly Father.
Ephesians 2:16 says
that I have been rec-
onciled to God “in one
body through the cross.”
Sin created a giant gulf
between me and my Creator, but Jesus’ work on
the cross spanned that
gulf. As it says in Ephesians 2:13, I have been
“brought near by the
blood of Christ.”
And not just “near,”
but listen to this. God
now lives inside me in
the form of His Holy
Spirit. Jesus said in John
14:7 that the Spirit would
dwell with us and even
be inside of us. I love
this phrase in Ephesians
3:16, “…to be strengthened with might through
His Spirit in the inner
man…”
So to me, Easter means forgiveness
through Christ, and that
forgiveness paved the
way for God to live inside me. His Holy Spirit
dwells in me, and He
bears good fruit – all
the “fruit of the Spirit”
mentioned in Galatians
5 including love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith-
fulness, gentleness and
self-control. He loves
me and comforts me and
teaches me and leads me
into all truth and brings
fulfillment and purpose
to my life; and that all
goes back to what we
celebrate on Easter.
And now the third
thing that Easter means
to me: hope for the future.
Titus 3:7 says that,
“having been justified by
His grace we should become heirs according to
the hope of eternal life.”
Colossians 1:5 talks
about the hope we have
because of what God has
laid up for us in heaven.
Romans 8 says that,
right now, we have the
“firstfruits of the Spirit,”
but we are eagerly waiting for the adoption, the
redemption of our body.
For we were saved in
this hope…”
Peter called it “a living hope.” Listen to
First Peter 1:3. “Blessed
be the God and Father of
our Lord Jesus Christ,
who according to His
abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ
from the dead…”
My life does not end
in the grave. The work
of Jesus opened the door
for me to have eternal
life, and I have great expectations for the future!
So there you go, the
three main things that
stand out to me at Easter:
--That I am forgiven
through faith in the shed
blood of Jesus,
--That His forgiveness opens the door for
the Holy Spirit to live
inside me for the rest of
my life on earth,
--And that His forgiveness gives me the
hope of eternal life. And
thus, like it says in First
Thessalonians 4:17, I
shall always be with the
Lord.
And that’s what Easter means to me.

Focus On The Family by Dr. Dobson
Don’t Let Small Grievances Ruin Relationship with Parents
Dr. James Dobson
QUESTION: I have
plenty of reasons to resent my parents. They’ve
never abused me or anything like that, but they
do such stupid things. My
dad’s work has been the
only thing he cared about.
My mom is a perpetual
nagger. How can I respect
people like that?
DR. DOBSON: Let’s
assume that your complaints against your parents are valid -- that they
didn’t do a very good job
of raising you and your
siblings.
Nevertheless,
I urge you to cut them
some slack. You’ll learn
someday just how hard
it is to be a good parent.
Even those who are highly motivated to do the job
right often make a mess
of things.
Why? Because children are infinitely complex. There is no formula
that works in every case.
In fact, I believe it is more
difficult to raise children
now than ever before.
Be assured that you will
not do the job perfectly,
either. Someday, if you
are blessed with children,
one or more of them will
blame you for your failures, just as you have criticized your parents.
Let me share one more
suggestion with you and
others who have been angry at their parents. Given
the brevity of life and the
temporary nature of all
human relationships, can
you find it within your
hearts to forgive them?
Maybe my own experience will be relevant to
you. My mother closed
her eyes for the last time
on June 26, 1988. She had
been so vibrant -- so im-
portant to each member
of our family. I couldn’t
imagine life without her
just a few years earlier.
But time passed so quickly, and before we knew
it, she had grown old and
sick and incompetent.
This human experience
is like that. In just a brief
moment, it seems, our
fleeting days are gone,
and as King David said,
“The place thereof shall
know it no more” (Psalm
103:16, kjv).
As I sat at her memorial service, I was flooded
with memories and a profound sense of loss. But
there was not the slightest hint of regret, remorse
or guilt. There were no
hurtful words I wished
I could have taken back.
There were no prolonged
conflicts that remained
unresolved between my
parents and me. Why
not? Was I a perfect son
born to flawless parents?
Of course not. But when
Shirley and I had been
married two years, I re-
member saying to her,
“Our parents will not always be with us. I see
now the incredible brevity
of life that will someday
take them from us. We
must keep that in mind
as we live out our daily
lives. I want to respond
to both sets of parents in
such a way that we will
have no regrets after they
are gone.”
Again, to those of
you who are in need of
this advice, I urge you
not to throw away these
good, healthy times. Your
parents will not always
be there for you. Please
A
think about what I have
written and be careful not
to create bitter memories that will hang above
you when the record is in
the books. No conflict is
worth letting that happen.
QUESTION: Are all
forms of child abuse illegal?
DR. DOBSON: Not
in any practical sense.
Within certain limits it
is not illegal to ignore a
child or raise him or her
without love. Nor is it
against the law to ridicule
and humiliate a boy or
girl. Those forms of rejec-
tion may be more harmful
even than some forms of
physical abuse, but they
are tougher to prove and
are usually not prosecutable.

er Learic Kinser, the
starting pitcher for the
first time in her career,
gave up a single to start
the game and a single
and a triple in the seventh inning for the only
hits of the game for the
Lakers. Kinser allowed
only three other batters to reach base, including a run-scoring
throwing error in the
first inning, and a base
on balls in each of the
fourth and seventh innings. She struck out
three. The fourth inning
base on balls was the
only base-runner Indian
Lake could muster between the first and last
innings.
There was no shortage of offense for the
Cougars, as well, as
they poked 11 hits, nine
of which were singles.
The stars were left
fielder Elysa Mathews,
who was three for three
with two triples and two
runs batted in, Brigette
Castiaux, who drove in
five runs on two hits,
and Kinser helped herself with two hits and
scoring two runs. Haley
Dillon drove in a run,
and Brooke Sizemore
scored twice.
Kenton Ridge head
coach Sarah Ivory was
pleased with the effort
from her squad, “We
said we had to start hitting the ball after starting 0 and 2. It is really
nice when the bottom
of our order comes
through.” she continued. “We can’t win if
we don’t put the ball
in play.” (Kinser) did
a nice job for us, especially being a freshman.”
Castiaux was excited to contribute for her
squad, “It was amazing
how we all came out to
hit today and how we
all came as a team.”
Kenton Ridge (1-2)
comes back to play five
games this week.
