OPENING DOORS OF OPPORTUNITY AND SERVICE
The 2012-2013 year has been an exciting one for the YMCA of the East
Valley! Activities at each branch continued to mature with the Highland
Branch achieving stable membership
numbers and welcoming a new gym
floor and exercise equipment.

The Redlands Branch completed and opened our new $13
million Aquatics Center and lobby. Additionally, the board
and staff have undertaken the development of a strategic
plan that will guide the efforts of the association over the
next 3-5 years.
This past year we served nearly 27,000 individuals through
memberships and programs. We have worked hard around
building quality and developing relationships. That strategy
has allowed us to deliver on our promise year after year, generation after generation.
Among these many accomplishments, however, the greatest
was selecting and bringing on our new CEO, Darwin Barnett.
Relocating with his family from the Greater Houston YMCA,
Darwin has brought a new energy and focus to our organization and his impact can already be felt. We look forward to
working with him for many years to come and to the great
impact he will have on our Y and on the communities we
serve in the East Valley.
Recently, we saw the culmination of many years’ worth of
work come to fruition in April when the new facilities of the
Redlands Family YMCA were completed. This new renovation
partially replaces a building that had served as the community’s YMCA since 1927 – and it has been a great source of
pride for Y staff and members alike. This work required hundreds of donors and raised more than $11.5 million in capital
project funds.
As always, there is work to be done, but the dedicated board,
staff and volunteers are motivated to serve our communities
in positive, transformative ways, and we are well positioned
to do so. Your support is critical to all of our efforts and to
keeping the YMCA of the East Valley financially strong and
programmatically relevant in the 21st century.
With renewed facilities in Redlands and new programs
throughout the Association, we have seen our membership
increase approximately 16%. This is evidence of great work
and commitment. Our annual campaign’s slogan “Growing
Stronger Together” was evident as hundreds of volunteers
raised nearly $400,000 to provide 5,000 youth and families
the opportunity to participate and belong throughout the
year. As a result, more children and families have a place of
their own at the YMCA. This is your YMCA. We nurture, develop and mentor. We enrich, transform and empower. We
hope you’ll continue to help us open doors of opportunities
and service for those who need us most. What door have you

At our Y, we believe that all kids have amazing potential. The values and skills learned early are vital
building blocks for life, and young people deserve an opportunity to discover who they are and what
they are capable of achieving. From the youngest in our child care programs to the teens in our Teen
Zone program, our Y gives kids a safe place to belong, build confidence and learn positive behaviors
grounded in our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
258 kids attended adventure day camp and 119 attended Camp Edwards
641 kids enrolled in pre-school and after-school licensed child care programs
11,250 kids attended Creative Before-& After-School Programs for Success (CAPS)
3,250 kids swam in 5,917 swim lessons
215 kids participated in Teen Zone, LIT and Model UN
34 kids enrolled in Parent Participation Pre-school
1,012 kids participated in youth sports, Circus, dance, cheer, gymnastics and karate
classes
MISSION MOMENT:
Helene is a five-year-old young lady who has been a member of the YMCA for
over a year participating in swim lessons. This past fall, she attended Adventure Day Camp and was experiencing
separation anxiety being away from her mom. Through some gentle coaching and introductions to some of the
other campers in her group, Helene began to interact with other campers and at the conclusion of the first week
her demeanor was in stark contrast to how she had been on her first day. She became talkative, energetic, and
seeking the company of her peers. After the second week of camp, Helene had become the little “spitfire” her
mother knew her to be at home. Through her experience at Adventure Day Camp, Helene was able to build her
self-confidence and social skills in a supportive environment in which she felt safe and valued.

At our Y, we believe that being healthy means more than simply being physically active. It is about maintaining a balanced spirit, mind and body. Our Y is a leading voice on health and well-being issues - and a
leader in fighting chronic disease - and is committed to empowering people to lead fuller lives. We bring
families closer together, promote healthy living and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun
shared interests.
249 adults improved their health through the 12 and 8 Weeks of Fitness programs
62 adults became more fit through the Y JumpStart Program and Personal Training
91,800 adults (estimated) danced, exercised, and made new friends in group
exercise classes
7,056 adults burned fat and built muscle in BodyPump and TRX classes
20 adults improved their fitness in Masters Swim class
47 teams (average of 10 adults per team) participated in adult sports leagues
59 active older adults strengthened friendships and improved their health in Cooking
TM

for Life Clinics and Active Older Adult trips
MISSION MOMENT:
Jill began coming to the Y in March of 2012, and has lost over 100 pounds
since then . “Even more important than the numbers, I am now able to do all the things I love doing like dancing
with my girls, playing basketball with my boys, and pretty much anything else I ever wanted to do! This past weekend, I went for a hike (with my three-year-old strapped to my back) and my son asked, ‘Can you do it?’ referring to
the rocky terrain I was scaling. I stopped and said, ‘I can do anything!’ I have never in my life felt that way. The
YMCA has really changed who I am, and those that knew me then, don't recognize me now. I am a happy person
that enjoys every day I am given. Thank you to the Y because it really has changed lives beginning with mine and
my family’s. You gave my children a better mother.”

At our Y, we believe that when we work together, we move individuals, families and communities forward.
Since 1887, our Y has united people from all walks of life to participate in and work for positive social
change by empowering people with the resources and support needed to live healthy, connected and secure lives.
1,465 generous donors helped open doors for others by giving to our Y
$398,293 were raised through our Annual Community Support Campaign to support our
financial assistance program
$420,000 were awarded for financial assistance for memberships, programs and
childcare
$56,000 were granted for financial assistance to Legal Aid recipients
1,143 people were served through Legal Aid
MISSION MOMENT
Scott and Carol are small business owners. “Owning a small business isn’t always
what people may think it’s cracked up to be. We are constantly financially challenged; however, the financial assistance program and good maintenance at the YMCA has helped us keep on top of our game as much as possible. We
are proud to be members of the YMCA, for its collective support has helped us achieve living healthier and happier
lives. We always recommend people to the YMCA because of the modern day equipment and pleasant, down to
earth people who work there. “
