ROYAL RANGERS

Royal Rangers is a principal ministry of the Assemblies of God focused on discipling boys for
Jesus Christ. We provide Christ-like character
formation and servant leadership development
for boys and young men in a highly relational and
fun environment. Our mission is to evangelize,
equip and empower the next generation of
Christ-like men and lifelong servant leaders.
The Potomac District administrative region of
the General Council of the Assemblies of God
takes in Washington, D.C., Maryland, most of
Virginia and northern West Virginia. Over 100
churches throughout this region currently provide Royal Ranger ministry to more than 2,500
boys and young men. We use many tools to
achieve that goal whether it be camping, merits
or interactive skills, all designed to help develop a
boy into a man while having fun and getting to
know God.
We want to develop both men and boys in mentoring relationships and leadership skills, and
guide them to Jesus Christ. We reach boys, so
they may reach another in their world.

DISTRICT COMMANDERS’S MEMO
Time to Gear Up!
By Bob Blessing
S
pring is almost here! I can feel
it and you can see all the signs.
MLB pitchers and catchers
have reported to their respective
teams for early tune up. Every day
when I drive past the local golf
course and driving range I see more
and more guys gearing up for their
season of chasing a little white ball
through the fields and in some cases the woods!
Have you geared up for your season? Have you considered
all your options? Are you Ranger Ready to begin reaching the
boys in your community for Christ? I’m not just writing to the
commanders/leaders here; I’m writing to you the GMA winners and the Discovery to Expedition Rangers as well.
The Royal Ranger 2016 calendar is full of events, including
National Camporama at Camp Eagle Rock, Mo. in July and the
Potomac District Pow Wow at Camp Rock Enon in Gore, Va.
in August. These are two great reasons to invite your friends to
Rangers so they can experience the fun and excitement of your
activities, the praise and worship time during our council fires
and the opportunity to meet God during our altar services.
What a great gift to give to one of your friends who has not
been walking with God. The gift of a relationship with our
Heavenly Father and the promise of eternal life in Christ.
We also have a full calendar of training events for you
Rangers that are ready to take on a challenge. The Potomac
District JLTA is on the calendar for June 10-12. Make your
plans to attend one of the camps we will offer: Junior Leadership Camp, Junior Survival Camp, Junior Missions Camp, Junior Training Trails, Shooting Sports Camp, and Advanced Junior Leadership Camp. Check the district website for applications and information pertaining to these camps.
I also want to encourage all our leaders and Rangers to
check out our newly designed website for Potomac Royal
Rangers at www.potomacrangers.org. Additionally, commanders/leaders please make sure the boys in your outpost see the
Tomahawk. We need your support in getting it into the hands of
our boys and their parents. Printing a copy for your pastor
might be a good thing to do as well.
We also have teamed with a vendor to provide customized
Royal Ranger wearables for Potomac District. Go to www.royal
-rangers.deco-apparel.com and check out all the new gear available, including the “Building Strong Christian Men” sublimated jersey. There is also a recognition ring that has been specially designed for the Potomac District. See the ad in the Tomahawk.
Let’s gear up for a great Ranger Season during 2016!

Leaky Vessels
e now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God,
not from ourselves. We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are
not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted
down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are
not destroyed. — 2 Corinthians 4:7-9
very Christian is a vessel
God has uniquely created
for sharing a treasure with
others. This treasure, referred to as the gospel of Jesus, is
contained in "fragile clay jars" so
it's "clear that our great power is
from God, not from ourselves."
Paul uses the phrase "fragile clay
jars" because as humans we are
easily broken and we struggle with
the most basic details of life. Yet
we are called to pour out our treasure so that the world comes into
contact with God.
God's works flow naturally
from a person whose life has been
totally committed to him. The key
is to give liberally of what we've
received, knowing that the Lord
will continue to fill us so that we
are never totally empty nor constantly overflowing. Instead, our
container will be full of holes that
continuously pour out the love of
Jesus. As long as we are being
filled by God daily, we will never
have a problem serving those he
wants us to serve (see Galatians
6:10).
However, these clay jars can
eventually become empty from
lack of use. Empty vessels serve
little purpose other than taking up
space. And the Lord does not want
us to simply exist. As pastor Rick
Warren has correctly noted, each
person has been made for a purpose. When a follower of Christ is
not connected to the source of
these gifts, his or her desire for
serving God and other people diminishes.
Think about your life-vessel
today. How has it been used to
store the goodness of God? Has
that goodness flowed into other
lives? Has God's measure of goodness in you evaporated from days
and months of non-use? Or is your
life a container full of holes, leaking the goodness of God continuously because you are continuously filled by the source that never
runs dry?
This devotion was originally
posted on Feb. 5, 2013 on Ministry Today Leadership Weekly at

Rangers Complete Wilderness Vigil
T
wo Rangers from Potomac District— Joshua Powis and
Chisholm Wilhem—completed
their vigil at last fall’s Frontiersman Camping Fellowship Territorial Rendezvous in Greene, N.Y. to
earn their Wilderness membership
in FCF.
Chisholm is a member of Outpost 152 at Lighthouse Worship
Center in Hayes, Va. and served
as Scout for FCF’s Blue Ridge
Chapter.
Joshua, age 14, is a member of
Outpost 6 at Pasadena Assembly
of God in Pasadena, Md. He has
been active in Royal Rangers for
nearly 10 years, and a member of
FCF for three-and-a-half years.
Among his other accomplishments in Rangers, he earned the
Gold Trail in Ranger Kids, Gold
Eagle in Discovery Rangers, and
his GMA as an Adventure Ranger this January.
He has also attended six Junior
Training Camps - DTC, JTC, JSC,
JMC, JWC and SSC.
Josh explains that he joined
FCF “to serve others and spend
more time camping with Dad.”
He wanted to earn his FCF Wilderness “to lead by example to
others in FCF.”
What was most memorable
about his Wilderness vigil experience? “Spending the night praying around my campfire,” replies
Josh.

V
isions of Africa Ministry
was established as a nonprofit ministry in 2008 by
Bryan Hill, who grew up in Royal
Rangers in the Potomac District.
VOA’s primary church affiliation
in the United States is with the Assemblies of God, through Freedom
Church A/G in Fredericksburg,
Bryan’s current home church.
Internationally, VOA partners
with churches and communitybased ministries in South Africa to
reach the people of Africa
through existing churches with
community development initiatives, evangelism and discipleship.
VOA supports and engages in
several community development
initiatives from orphans and vulnerable children care, to poverty
alleviation, small business development, agricultural development,
prisoners rehabilitation into society, care for at-risk teenage pregnancies, and also working with
youth in schools.
Bryan started in Royal Rangers at age four as a Rainbow, and
remained active in the ministry for
the following 13 years, most of that
time as a member of Outpost 202
at (church) in Capital Section.
As a member of the Frontiersman Camping Fellowship, Bryan
earned his Wilderness rank. He
served as District Scout for a year
starting in 2003, and as National
Scout from 2003 to 2005.
Bryan earned his Gold Medal of
Achievement (#221 in Potomac
District) along with one Gold Buffalo and two Silver Buffaloes.

Dairy Cows for Kenya Children’s Homes
and Bringing Rangers to South Africa
A
ndy Whitman and his wife Stacey, Assembly
of God missionaries from the Potomac District, chair the Kenya Assemblies of God
(KAG) Child Development Committee. KAG operates
eight homes for abandoned children, and one project
of the Child Development Committee is to help each
of the homes to obtain a dairy cow so the children can
have fresh milk. The homes will also sell any surplus
milk to generate additional income to support the
ministry.
Stacey recently met with David and Mary Boyd of
Boys and Girls Missionary Challenge (BGMC) and
they are behind the project. If you or the children of
your church would like to help purchase a cow, please
contact the Whitmans at [email protected] for more
information. The KAG will
raise $300 themselves for
each cow, and donors that
can raise an additional $900 per cow are needed.
The International Assemblies of God is interested
in using Royal Rangers for their boys in South Africa. Andy and Doug March traveled to Johannesburg
last September (right photo below) to meet with their
executive leaders and to begin planning for the future—a special training event is now in the works for
March 2016. Also pictured are missionaries Earl and
Laura Goodrich of South Africa.

HAD I BEEN THERE
By Eleanor Dolan
Had I been there in Jesus’ day would I have called Him Lord?
Would my eyes have seen His glory, my heart received His word?
When the holy ones and wise ones, the leaders of my land
had branded Him impostor, what then had been my stand?
Would I have scorned convention and dared to call Him King,
this meek and humble stranger, a lowly Nazarene?
Would I have watched an hour in the garden’s lonely night?
Would I have spoken for Him in chill dawn’s early light?
Would I have walked beside Him as he climbed Golgotha's hill
midst curses, mockings, laughter, that the ages echo still?
When He cried in anguish, “Father, they know not what they do,”
would his searching eyes have found me grieving with His precious
few?
In the awful din and rabble that dark noon on Calvary
would my cries have joined another, “Master, please remember me?”
We do not know, we cannot say how those days might have been.
But, here is truth, an absolute: He's the same today as then!
Another truth, an awful truth; mankind is still the same,
and yet His timely question, “Whom say you, that I am?”
With each answer He’s exalted or crucified again.
That He is Lord, that He is mine, my joyful heart proclaims!

away on Feb. 12.
He is survived by his
wife Charlotte; his daughter Holly Bonanno; his son
Robert M. Weber, Jr. and his wife Lauren; and his
grandchildren Abigail and Dominic.
Bob was a Royal Ranger commander at Outpost
103 for about 20 years, working with various age
groups, before he then transferred to Outpost 18 several years ago. Bob joined the R.R.A. in 2008 and
worked faithfully in both section and district Pow

Having worked with him at G.M. and outside
Rangers, says Gary Groves, Royal Ranger Alumni
president for Potomac District, he was always a man
whom you could depend upon when needing help.
“The Royal Ranger Alumni would like to offer
our condolences to the family of Cmdr. Weber. He
had a big heart for boys and often gave money for
their cause. He will be missed at the concession
stand and in this ministry,” Groves said.
