LOCAL FORESTS:
A Benefit to You
and Our Community
ennsylvania forests are a vital part of our region’s natural and cultural
heritage. People of the Upper Delaware River region have worked these
forestlands for generations. Our state name literally translates as “Penn’s
woods.” Our forests are beautiful to look at. They provide rich wildlife
habitats. They are the perfect places to hike, hunt, or bird watch.
P
Our forests are important economic drivers for our region and good
sources of local jobs. And they protect vital drinking water sources for us
and for everyone downstream.
The Upper Delaware River Watershed provides water to over 15 million
people. That water is filtered by the healthy forests that thrive here. The
Delaware Highlands Conservancy works with landowners and communities
of the Upper Delaware River to protect the lands and waters of this special
region. We understand that to protect the water here, we need to assure
that forestlands remain forestlands. We partner with organizations like the
Common Waters Fund that is dedicated to working with private landowners
to help them manage and conserve their forestlands. And we promote the
support of local forest economies through our award-winning Shop Local
Save Land initiative.
Today, Pennsylvania ranks first in the nation for hardwood production;
75% of Pennsylvania’s forestlands are owned by private, non-industrial
landowners—in the Delaware River Basin, 84% are privately owned. The
Shop Local Save Land Guide and website create a well-connected network
of local wood products providers, forestry professionals, these forest
landowners, and the general public.
Your choice to buy local through the providers listed in this guide
and on the website can help our wood product businesses, services,
and artisans to remain a vibrant part of our local economy. Your
support of these important local businesses assures that our valuable
forests are here for us now and will be here for future generations.
Sincerely,
Sue Currier

FOREST MANAGEMENT AND TREE CARE
Consulting Foresters
Consulting foresters are professional foresters that provide a broad range of
woodland management services including timber appraisals, marketing assistance,
preparation of forest management plans (Forest Stewardship Plans), timber stand
improvement operations, forest pest management assistance, and wildlife habitat
improvement.
A consulting forester works with landowners to understand their goals—such
as long-term growth, wildlife habitat maintenance or income management—and
makes recommendations to help the landowner achieve them. Working throughout the process from initial assessment, management plan, maintenance and
harvest, a consulting forester also typically acts as an agent for the woodland
owner before, during and after a timber sale. It is strongly recommended that
woodland owners contact a consulting forester to develop a management plan
prior to any timber harvesting operations.

Tree Care
Tree health and longevity are the results of proper care and maintenance.
Certified arborists specialize in the care of individual trees and can provide
landowners with insect and disease assessments, forest insect spraying, and
other services. Proper tree care is an investment that can lead to substantial
returns. Well cared for trees are attractive and can add considerable value to
your property. Poorly maintained trees can be a significant liability. Pruning or
removing trees, especially large ones, can be dangerous work, which should be
done only by those trained and equipped to work safely in trees. For a list of
Certified Arborists in your area visit www.isa-arbor.com.

Sawmills
Pennsylvania is known around the world for its quality hard and softwoods.
Our sawmills are the first wave of facilities to further that important distinction
beyond forest management and into the timber processing phase.
Northeast PA has both age-old sawmill equipment and state-of-the-art technology,
each maximizing quality and efficiency for the end user. No material entering a
sawmill goes to waste. Sawdust becomes animal bedding or wood pellets, bark to
mulch, and slab wood to chips and heater fuel. Sawmill operators don’t necessarily
own the land from which the timber is harvested. Typically a timber harvester
will transport logs from local woodlots to the mill for processing.

Building Supplies
Building product suppliers have a unique perspective on lumber and wood products since they serve a diverse customer base ranging from carpenters, framers
or cabinet makers to “do-it-yourselfers.” In order to accommodate this unique
mix of needs, home centers or lumber yards typically stock a variety of wood
species representing different grades and price ranges. Most species are grown
and harvested domestically, including at local woodlots, and depending on market
conditions exotic lumber species can be obtained from as far away as the southern hemisphere.
Local lumber has traditionally found a market in the construction industry, a
practice which continues today. Local businesses are capable of producing almost
any wood building product. From rough sawn, green oak timber used for barn
restoration to a fine piece of cherry crown molding, from hemlock to hickory,
our locally grown and manufactured softwoods and hardwoods are essential to
the vitality of our local building industry.

Farm Supplies
Farms have traditionally been a mainstay of our region’s local economy and
scenery, and the wood industry has long provided our farms with reliable sources
of building materials for barn siding, planking, fence posts and animal bedding.
The Delaware Highlands Conservancy values the important relationship between
farms and forests, and has been helping landowners to protect these working
lands since 1994. To create a welcoming economic climate that further supports
these local industries, the Conservancy produces this guide as well as a guide to
local farms and farmers’ markets in PA’s Monroe, Pike and Wayne counties.Visit

Furnishings
Without reliable local sources of sustainably managed and harvested wood,
many of the everyday items we depend on in our homes and offices would be
unavailable to us. Artisans use local wood to build and install items like custom
kitchen and bathroom cabinetry or butcher block countertops.
Architectural millwork includes producers of custom crown molding, coffered
ceilings, wainscoting and fireplace mantle pieces. Local woodworkers create
rustic furniture, antique reproductions and contemporary designs. Often these
skilled professionals will work with consumers one-on-one to build unique
pieces to match the scale and design of a space. Sustainably managed and
harvested natural wood provides a warm, relaxing effect when incorporated
into office or living spaces.

Garden and Landscaping
The forest products industry produces minimal waste by selling its by-products
to partner industries like garden centers and landscapers. Bark is sold as mulch.
Edgings and slab wood—once given away as tomato stakes or firewood—are
chipped and sold to pulp mills or as mulch or playground mats. Sawdust—
previously a devalued by-product of lumber manufacturing—is now an important
profit generating component of turning logs into lumber thanks to advancements
in biofuel technology. Once sold primarily for animal bedding, sawdust is now
also used by pellet manufacturers, dry kilns (boilers), and particle board
manufacturers.

Lumber
Northeast PA lumber has been sought after since colonial times. In the past, logs
were transported by river, and lumber by canal boat, wagons or rail for shipbuilding, house and barn construction, and factory use. Our lumber helped to build
America.
Today, its applications have evolved but consumer demand for our quality lumber
remains strong. Moldings, paneling, fine furniture and veneer, baseball bats, pallets,
construction material, or log home and timber frame components are a few of
the thousands of products that require lumber grown and harvested in Pennsylvania. Though the lumber industry has evolved greatly since its illustrious start in
colonial times, Northeast PA’s lumber remains environmentally responsible and
chemical-safe, upholding a heritage of excellence.

Wood Energy
The use of wood as a source of heat dates back to the beginning of civilization
and was a transforming force in the evolution of mankind. Today, cordwood and
wood pellets provide a highly affordable source of heat to homes and businesses.
Tomorrow, wood will be a major component in the production of ethanol. The
environmental and economic benefits of wood as a renewable energy source are
many. When forestlands are managed for sustainable timber growth, burning fuel
wood is 100% carbon neutral and does not contribute greenhouse gases to our
atmosphere. As wood is burned, the greenhouse gases (CO2) released into the
air is readily absorbed by trees as part of the growing process. And since much
of the wood used for energy comes from timber unsuitable for lumber products,
its use greatly reduces waste and enhances the long-term value of our forestlands.

TIMBERING
Horse Logging
Horse Logging is a viable and ‘green’ alternative to the practice of mechanical
skidding when harvesting timber. Horses impact the landscape less than the
heavy equipment commonly used in the woods today. Of course, 100 years ago
all of America’s harvested timber was pulled out by horsepower. Draft horses
and mules are capable of handling a broad scale of projects, and can pull between
20 and 40 logs per day depending on the difficulty of the terrain.

Timber Harvesters
These highly skilled professionals provide the crucial link between a standing
forest and the local wood products industry. Timber harvesters, timber
operators or loggers, as they are commonly known, serve as both a vital tool
for forest management and a vital supply line of wood products to various
industries throughout the region that rely on them for day-to-day operations.
Timber harvesters are contracted by woodland owners, consulting foresters or
land managers who desire to cut and sell wood products from local forests for
a variety of reasons. The harvester cuts and transports the raw materials from
the forest to its next destination, usually a saw or pulp mill.

passion for food that is reflected in the Hotel Fauchère’s organic
garden, foraging program and support of local farmers. “Our menu
begins when the farmers bring in our food,” he says. “In a world where people

create dishes that reintroduce these elements into people’s lives.”
E
Chef Bates’ organic garden — growing over 100 varieties of produce and
herbs — is part of hotel co-owner Richard Snyder’s Foster Hill Farm; foraging

reproducing trout stream.
Wild edibles utilized by the culinary

Forested landscapes provide many recreational and financial
benefits for landowners as well as benefits for their surrounding
communities through water quality and quantity protection.
Forested vegetation provides a natural filter for both surface and
subsurface water running off the land, trapping sediment, nutrients,
chemicals and other pollutants. Forested buffers help streams run
clearer, cleaner and cooler by capturing rainfall, reducing flooding
and recharging groundwater.

The forest industry has always been a big part of Wayne County’s
economy. The commercial use of timber in the county has gone
from trees being felled with crosscut saws and skidding with
horses to mechanized fellers and grapple skidders or forwarders.
In the early years, timber was taken to the Delaware River, lashed
together and floated down stream to Philadelphia for use in
construction and shipbuilding. Today, timber harvested in Wayne
County is used internationally.
The Wayne Conservation District is one of only a few districts in
Pennsylvania to offer the services of a Forest Specialist to residents,
industries and visitors including:
• Working with landowners to answer questions and respond to
concerns about their forests
• Providing environmental educational programs in local schools;
public information on forest pests, forest management and
timber harvesting; and industry information about current
regulations to timber harvesters
• Reviewing permits, responding to complaints and performing
compliance inspections

People and Land
The Shop Local Save Land Guide to Wood Products
is produced by the Delaware Highlands Conservancy
(www.DelawareHighlands.org), a local nonprofit working with
landowners and communities to protect the natural heritage and
quality of life of the Upper Delaware River region. Since 1994, the
Conservancy has made tremendous progress in conserving the forests,
farms, and waters of Pike and Wayne counties, in PA, and Sullivan and
Delaware counties, in NY. In 2012, the Conservancy merged with the
Eagle Institute to form the “perfect partnership” to work together
to protect eagles and their habitat.
At the core of the Conservancy’s important work is the idea
that people are part of the land—we are connected to it and
it sustains us. Healthy land and water means healthy people.
Healthy working lands mean sustainable economies.
The Conservancy:
• Works with landowners to protect their forests and farmlands.
• Connects Upper Delaware residents and visitors to local working farms and forests to foster economic
opportunities that support these important local businesses.
• Hosts educational events for the public, resource professionals and municipal officials.
• Promotes community partnerships and sustainable development.
Our working forests and farms are our future. They need our care, our protection, and our support.
Shop Local Save Land provides the opportunity for us all to be directly involved in supporting the lands we love.
Get Into It
The Shop Local Save Land initiative encourages consumers to connect to the local
farm and forest product providers of the Upper Delaware River region. In addition to
this guide, the initiative includes the Guide to Farms and Farm Markets and a searchable
listing of local farm and forest product providers on ShopLocalSaveLand.com.
By connecting residents and visitors to the area with locally grown and produced
products, we can continue to support of all our locally sustainable economies—farm,
forest, and ecotourism—because vibrant clean local economies means our lands and
waters will be healthier for everyone, now and for the long term.
For all of us who call the Upper Delaware region home or who visit here because we
love the natural heritage and rural culture it has to offer, shopping local and saving land
is an easy—and vital—connection to make.
