Qufu is the hometown of Confucius, who is traditionally believed to have been born at the
nearby Mount Ni. The city contains numerous historic palaces, temples and cemeteries. The
three most famous cultural sites of the city, collectively known as San Kong, i.e. "The Three
Confucian [sites]", are the Temple of Confucius, the Cemetary of Confucius and the Kong
Family Mansion. Together, these three sites have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
since 1994.
Jinan is known as the "City of Springs" because of the large number of natural artesian
springs. The majority of the springs, many of which have been historically listed under the “72
Famous Springs are concentrated in the downtown district and flow north to converge in
Daming Lake. The Baotu Spring Park is the most popular of the springs in the City of Jinan
proper. Besides the Baotu Spring, the park contains several other springs that are listed among
the "72 Famous Springs". "Bào tū" means "jumping and leaping" in Chinese. The water in the
spring pool can be seen foaming and gushing, looking like a pot of boiling water. The spring
was visited by the Emperor Qian Long (1711–1799) of the Qing dynasty who declared it "the
first spring under the heaven”. A tablet with the Emperor's handwriting "Baotu Spring" has
since been erected beside the spring pool.
Not far away to the northeast of Baotu Spring Park is the Daming Lake, which, together with
Baotu Spring and the Thousand-Buddha Mountain is often regarded as the "Three Greatest
Attractions in Jinan". Other notable parks in the city include the Five Dragon Pool near the
Baotu Spring Park, the Black Tiger Spring on the southern city moat, and the Baimai Springs
of Zhangqiu City to the east of Jinan.

TaiTai Outing
Xi Shan (West Hill) by Taihu Lake
Wednesday, October 22, 2014
It’s time to explore more of Taihu Lake and its wonders!
Xi Shan is a set of three islands connected to each other and the mainland
with three long and fascinating bridges, located by the southeast coast of Taihu Lake.
Taihu is the biggest sweet water lake in China between Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces.
Full-day TaiTai outing by bus starts at 8:30 a.m. ending around 6 p.m. at the Singa Plaza
Starbucks, 88 Zhong Xin Da Dao Xi, SIP, Suzhou. Eugenia, our tour guide, will join us the entire
trip.
Cost is 300rmb per person (incl. bus, lunch, entrance fees etc.) – group min. 15 people. Also
there is a good chance to enjoy a local lunch with local specialties in a local house. Let us know
in advance if you are a vegetarian.
For more information and to sign-up contact Raija, [email protected] with your
name, e-mail and mobile phone number (latest by October 15 – money is non refundable after
the 15th). If you have relatives or friends visiting Suzhou, they are welcome to join the TaiTai
activities.
Along the Xi Shan tour we plan on visiting and exploring:
- Linwu cave, a stone cave, the rocks look like the forest (lin in Chinese) and the top of the cave is
as flat as a housetop (wu in Chinese). Linwu Cave is known as "the ninth cave under the heaven".
It is an ancient cave system that has a flat ground and many standing stones, indicating the
unique land formation corroded by limestone. This cave has been a very important place for the
ceremony of the Taoism since Han Dynasty.
- Carved building at Tangli town, of Qing dynasty. Carvings in wood, stone and brick can be seen
on building doors, windows and roof beams. Legendary figures in Beijing and Kun opera, flowers,
auspicious animals, mountains and lakes and calligraphy are the main topic for carving. If time
permits we can also have a look at the geological museum.

Xi Shan is a good option for a Family Weekend Outing and our one-day TaiTai Outing gives the
best chance to see and plan for the future trip with family and friends.
