Greetings
T
THE MOST WONDERFUL GIFTS always come from the heart.
Earlier this year, my grandmother gathered all of her granddaughters
around a dining table dressed with the most beautiful spread of teacups
I’ve ever seen. There were plenty of pinks, but also yellows, blues, reds
and golds. There were all sorts of florals and intricate patterns, cups from
sets with siblings in the mix and cups like no others.
My grandmother – more beautiful and regal than any teacup – allowed
each of her five granddaughters to peruse the selection. We ooohed and
ahhhed at each one, delicately lifting each cup from its matching saucer
and raising our pinkies as if we were sipping with the Queen herself.
Then, from oldest to youngest, we each got to select our favourite
from the bunch. I chose a pretty yellow and gold cup because it stood out
from the rest. Following everyone’s selection (and no disagreements!) my
grandmother did a random draw for the remaining cups and we divvied
them up according to her instructions. Once we all had our various cups,
there was a little bit of trading and bartering, but everyone ended up with
some beautiful pieces.
Now, every time I look in my china cabinet, I’m reminded of my
grandmother. Every drink from one of her teacups is special. The best
part: there was no particular occasion for this endowment of china, my
grandmother just wanted to know the cups she’d collected over many
years were being used and appreciated.
This holiday season, I hope to emulate my grandmother’s generosity
and thoughtfulness with every gift. I want each recipient on my list to feel
as special and warm as I do when I sip my tea from one of her teacups.
I’ll be exploring small and large stores across Waterloo Region to find
treasures that suit everyone.
I also can’t wait to spend endless hours in the snow this winter.
There are so many ponds in my neighbourhood begging to be cleared for
hockey; I hope to skate them all. My snowshoes are ready and waiting to
be strapped on as well, so if you see me tromping across a local park or
down a trail, I hope you’ll stop and say hello!

For the colour enthusiasts out there, it’s
definitely your year! With this natural base
of wood, glass and metal, colour will be hot
and anything goes. It may just be a pop
of colour, but the pop is definitely more
dramatic – more of a go big or go home
approach. Admittedly, after so many
beige years, it’s uplifting.
TECHNOLOGY
Trending forward we have to touch on technology. We’ve seen USB
outlets added to regular power outlets and thermostats that teach
themselves your schedule and that you can adjust from your phone. I can’t
wait to see what comes next but I know it will make our lives easier and
of course, more stylish! OH

Hot rolled, cold rolled, powder coated, you name it; steel is an
unbreakable trend. Tables, chairs, tiles; the industrial trend is becoming
more refined than factory, but the presence of steel will be huge.

Poor old paint may just not be enough anymore. Glass, leather, metals
and wallpaper are just some of the wall cladding we’ll see in the upcoming
year. Using back-painted glass panels in a shower creates a completely
seamless wall leaving you with a translucent feel and no grout lines.
Leather tiles will also become more popular as a wall material (and floor,
actually) adding richness and texture to an otherwise drab piece of
drywall. It’s becoming available in several patterns and colours taking
the place of wallpaper for a slightly more luxurious effect.

Have designers been drawing inspiration from manufacturing
plants? Not sure. But we will certainly be able to decorate our homes
to look like one.
The wallpaper is fascinating because the optical illusion that it’s concrete
or another material is so realistic you literally have to go and touch the

With watermelons and popsicles a distant
memory, it’s time to forecast the upcoming trends
for 2013. Ironically, when I look at the number
“2013,” I think of space travel and futuristic
design. Maybe we’re not quite there, but we are
definitely heavy on industrial style – metals, glass
and a whole lot of technology and innovation.

1. THE USE OF FABRIC: Add Canadian character and charm to your
home with the simple use of textiles.

Plaid Upholstery: Whether it be gingham, tartan, or tattersall, this popular
pattern consisting of several crossed horizontal and vertical lines (usually
in two or more colours) speaks directly to the essence of Canadian settlers.
My favourite way to incorporate it in décor is with upholstery. I personally
prefer it in smaller doses, such as for sofa pillows or dining room seats,
however a club chair completely covered looks amazing as well.
Cosy Throws: Curling up on the sofa on a cold winter’s day wouldn’t be
the same without one of these. Here are my three favourite classics:

Point Blanket: It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t start with this iconic
blanket by The Bay – this wool Point blanket dates back to the 18th
century and used to be traded. It continues to be a number one seller
and is sold exclusively by The Hudson’s Bay Company.
Faux Fur: Fox, mink or coyote – these Canadian creature-mimicked
furs can be the perfect Canuck-inspired addition to your space for
added comfort and even luxuriousness.
Matelassé: Meaning quilted, padded or cushioned, and normally
referring to hand-quilted textiles. It is meant to mimic the style of
hand-stitched Marseilles, a type of quilt made in Provence, France.
Incorporating these fabrics into your décor can be the subtle hint of
pattern and texture you’re looking for.
2. THE USE OF WOOD: Nothing warms up a space quite like the
use of natural wood.
Walls: I particularly like walls sheltered in large, real-wood planks.
Douglas fir or cedar – both known for their distinctive grain patterns
and tight knots – are each suitable choices when it comes to selecting
the type of wood to use.
Accessories: Dress up the inside or the surrounding area of your fireplace
with logs of wood – even without the use of fire, this actually does create
a feeling of warmth too.
3. THE ADDITION OF ANTIQUES: If the northern vibe is the look,
an old piece of Canadian history is most definitely calling. Usually
an item made of wood, such as an old sled, pair of skis or a rocking
chair will feel the most rustic and true to the heritage.
My tips for antique hunting:
• Do your research before heading out – know what you are looking for.
• Bring with you a magnifying glass to check for dates, signatures,
imperfections.
• Touch, smell and handle the piece. Get familiar with what you’re
looking to buy before you buy it. If you have any doubts, don’t be
afraid to ask questions. OH

It’s a hassle to wrap on the floor one day and in the dining room the
next, spending time moving from room to room, squeezing in wherever
you can and trying to avoid rogue dog hairs and carpet fluff.
Dedicate a small space for wrapping to make things easier on yourself.
Corinna vanGerwen, an editor, writer and stylist who offers creative gift
wrapping services and workshops in the Toronto area, says “crowded equals
crinkled.” A large dining table made to seat six to eight people is great, but
you can manage with a smaller table, desk or kitchen island, as long as it’s
not too shallow. You need space to spread out. vanGerwen suggests a surface
that’s at least five to six feet long and two to three feet deep.
SUPPLIES TO KEEP ON HAND:
Essentials: tape, scissors, tissue, paper, ribbon
Bonuses: Toppers and gift tags. vanGerwen prefers double-sided tape
and likes to keep a variety of paper on hand.
Rolls vs. Sheets: Not sure which type of paper to buy? Sheets of
wrapping paper will have creases, but they’re also easier to store. Rolls are
smooth but take up more space and can get squished more easily.
HOW TO KEEP YOUR SPACE TIDY
vanGerwen’s number one rule for creating a gift wrapping station that
works: have a spot for everything. Pick up a few plastic containers to store
your supplies so you can tuck them away when they’re not being used. Try
a wastebasket for storing your rolls of paper – “when it’s full, you know
you need to stop buying paper,” laughs vanGerwen.

of ribbon.
Most importantly, keep everything in one place so you always have it
handy when you’re ready to wrap.

“Fold corners nicely and pay attention to the
small details,” says vanGerwen. Take care to
have good craftsmanship. Even a gift wrapped

sprig of cedar, jingle bells, small toys for kids or
a candy cane. Anything other than a bow will
jazz up your presentation. “You can have so
much fun with those,” says vanGerwen. “You
have the opportunity to get really creative.”

You can do a lot with material selection.
Choose a fun, patterned paper and some nice
ribbon. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but nice
materials will make wrapping more fun. Get
creative by trying different materials like a map,
wallpaper scraps or pages from old books. OH

From the outside, this
French country manor
has always looked like it
belongs in Cambridge’s
historic Blair Village.
The interior, on the other
hand, is a different story.
When Debra Desforges and her
husband Roger purchased the home,
the interior was outdated, dark and
disjointed. However, Debra, a designer,
saw its potential. She transformed the
interior to fit the home’s exterior design
and her family’s needs.
Now, after a top-to-bottom redesign,
the house is for sale once again. This
time around, the chic home, in this
historic neighbourhood with ties to
Langdon Hall, has a more cohesive feel
– all thanks to Debra making it more
romantic and functional. “Now it feels
like a destination home,” she says.

Although the home is for sale because Debra and Roger are drawn to
a new property and project, Debra says it will be hard to leave this space
behind. “I designed it to be timeless,” she says. “It’s open but not too open
concept. I think it’s great for family entertaining and friends.”
After gutting every room and sanding all the ceilings and floors,
Debra changed all the trim in the house. With the help of Denis McEwan
and Jerry Ramseyer from Renown Cabinet Systems Inc. (her go-to
contractors for a variety of projects), she upgraded narrow, ineffective trim
to bold, replica French design edging around every doorframe. “Jerry and
I design and Denis and Jerry build anything we come up with. Everything
is custom,” says Debra. She has worked with Denis for the past five years
and with Jerry for about 17 years.

Regardless of what other projects she has on the go, Debra insists that
working on your own home is the ultimate labour of love. “I like that you
can go into one of my homes 20 years later and it’s actually better,” she
says. This home is proof her work not only stands the test of time, but
overcomes it.
Early in the renovation process, Debra had all the floors replaced.
Len Koebel Flooring Ltd. finished all the four-inch plank wood floors,
except in the kitchen where Debra had pre-finished flooring installed.
All the walls are white or very light in colour, painted by Daryl Longre.
The bright whites and natural light create a space that is airy, open
and soft. When daylight just won’t do, beautiful light fixtures from The

Beautiful floors for the real world
In the kitchen, the main hub of the home, Debra added quartz
countertops and topped the large island with marble. Two tall chalkboards
cover one end wall, which leads to a powder room and main-floor laundry.
All appliances came from Appliance Plus.
The dining room is f lanked by tall windows looking out on a
beautiful, established yard. The dining space is large enough to seat 20
people comfortably.
When they’re not hosting, the Desforges eat their more intimate meals in
the breakfast room. This space used to be a sunroom, but Debra wanted to
convert it to an all-weather room and an easygoing, bright dining space. She

painted all the walls white and had the original Terracotta floors sandblasted.
About her décor style, Debra says, “most people like matchy-matchy,
but I don’t. I went for elements that are similar but not the same. Most
people are so afraid to experiment.”
The sunken living room on the left of the foyer features comfortable
furniture, including a weathered coffee table from Cornerstone
Home Interiors and handmade wood furniture from Gibsons Home
Furnishings. While the fireplace may look like it burns wood, it’s
actually gas without the glass. “You can only install one like it if you have
a real fireplace to begin with,” says Debra. Continued on page 42

To the right of the foyer is Debra’s home office, which has its own
fireplace, plus a large desk where she can spread out her latest project.
At the top of the stairs, double-wide doors open to the master
bedroom. Debra designed a small candle-lit fireplace for the far side of the
room and added plenty of shelving and cupboard space, which the master
originally lacked. “I’m all about storage,” she laughs.
Each of the other bedrooms and bathrooms is slightly different, too.
One spare bedroom carries the French country theme from top to bottom,
including an en suite with a white clawfoot tub. At the opposite end of
the hall, there’s a more contemporary room. While it has similar colours,
it’s set up as a secondary office and a sitting room and has a more modern
bathroom. Regardless of the style, when she’s redoing a bathroom, Debra
does not scrimp on fixtures.
As for the exterior, Debra left most elements as they were, except for
the roof. Thomson Roofing Inc. replaced the existing roof with a charcoal
timber design. She wanted the landscaping to be as relaxed as the décor inside,
so she had Elmira’s Earthscape help her design gardens that mimic those
at Langdon Hall, a historic country house hotel. Everything is intentionally
low-maintenance and natural. “There’s always something blooming,” says
Debra, who loves to clip her flowers and bring them inside for hits of colour.
The Desforges are selling their home through Kevin L. Haight
from Royal LePage Action Realty. Because of the neighbourhood’s
connection to Langdon Hall, the purchase of the home includes a two-year

Municipal, provincial and national emergency management personnel
say that personal preparedness is key to successfully weathering the
worst that nature can throw at us. According to Dave O’Brien, division
manager of corporate security and emergency management for the City
of London, “We ask everybody to be able to self-sustain for a period of
up to 72 hours. When we experience major disasters, it could take up to
that long to get to people.”
So what does it take to “shelter in place” (the term management personnel
use) if you’re expected to be able to take care of your family for three days
during a disaster? “You’ll need to fulfill your basic needs of warmth, food,
medicine and, for your own frame of mind, communication,” advises O’Brien.
“Communication can help you to get through an event emotionally.”
A trip to a local retailer will supply most of what you need and
something to store it all in. There are also many types of premade kits
available for sale.

O’Brien suggests that the bag or bin be stored on a shelf in the
basement or safest room in the house.

You’ll need a camp stove or barbecue to cook on, but remember not to
use them indoors for safety reasons. Make sure you have an extra tank of
fuel on hand, as well.
Big storms usually mean power outages, so you won’t be able to use
credit or debit cards. O’Brien suggests that $200 is a good amount of cash
to have on hand, kept in a waterproof bag or container.
Keeping warm in the middle of a “snowmageddon,” like the one that hit
many parts of Ontario two winters ago, can be a challenge. O’Brien gives the nod
to natural source heating like fireplaces or candles – though he says that both
can prove to be fire hazards and must be used carefully – but says that kerosene
powered heaters are a bad idea. However, if this is something you want to try, he
says that inexperience can prove very hazardous. “Get it, read the instructions,
understand it, practice lighting it – all in advance. Doing it on the spur of the
moment during an emergency isn’t the right thing to do,” he adds.
Special provisions need to be made for pets. “Most people consider them
part of the family, so they need to be considered just like everyone else when
planning. Make sure their water, food and medicines are accounted for.”
If you’re undertaking a road trip during winter months, make sure you check
out the weather conditions carefully before starting out. Drivers on Highway
402 learned that lesson in December of 2010, when over 300 cars were stranded
for several hours or days, depending on when they received help. “Most of those
drivers weren’t prepared. Some of them used floor mats wrapped around their
legs to keep warm. We get in too big a hurry in this hustle and bustle world
to get somewhere. When driving in the winter, check for upcoming weather
conditions and have a car kit prepared,” advises O’Brien.
An emergency kit for your
vehicle should include:

• Sand, salt or kitty litter for traction,
traction mats
• Tow chain or rope
• Compass
• Cloth or roll of paper towels
• Warning light or road flares
• Extra clothing and footwear
• Non-perishable food and water
• Axe or hatchet, small tool kit
• Booster cables
• Ice scraper and brush
• Road maps
• Matches and a “survival” candle in a
deep can (to warm hands, heat a drink
or use as an emergency light)
• Fire extinguisher
• Methyl hydrate (for fuel line and
windshield de-icing)
• Flashlight and batteries
• First-aid kit with seatbelt cutter
• Blanket

The season of giving is upon us and for many of us,
the list is long. What to give the boss? What to give the person who has
everything? Is there something interesting to take to a holiday party other
than the old standard of a bottle of cabernet sauvignon? Well, hopefully I
can help in this department, as there’s a world of fun gift-giving options
out there. Of course there are all sorts of budgets, but I’ll try to at least
point you in the right direction for possibilities. Consider the following
as a shopping list for all your gift-giving needs! (If you are unfamiliar with
any of these wines or beers just ask for help while in your local liquor store,
they should all be readily available).
HEADING TO A HOLIDAY PARTY?
Try taking a bottle of prosecco or cava, both are festive sparkling wines
that won’t break the bank.
A BOTTLE FOR THE BOSS?
A cabernet sauvignon from California, an Amarone from Italy or a
burgundy from France are always solid choices. Or try a 10, 20 or 30
year-old tawny port, this will last longer than one bottle of wine and will
remind your boss how great you are over and over again.
THE FATHER, BROTHER, FATHER-IN-LAW, AND SO ON…?
Put together an interesting basket of beers, choose all different varieties
to allow a real taste experience. Fill it with wheat beer, stout, Abbey-style
ale, an India pale ale and anything else that seems interesting.
THE MOTHER, SISTER, MOTHER-IN-LAW, AND SO ON…?
Why not try a bottle of something floral, sweet and pretty. Dessert wines
such as icewine, Beaumes de Venise, moscato or late harvest wines are a
real sweet treat and are the perfect way to finish off a meal or to sip chilled
as an aperitif before dinner.
THE FOODIE IN YOUR LIFE?
Choose a region in the world such as Spain or Niagara and then fill a
basket or wine crate with wines and food products from that area. You
can add olive oil, cheese, mustards, preserves, etc.
If you have a little extra time on your hands you can always make some
gifts that incorporate wines and spirits. Here are a couple of suggestions
that are easy and delicious!

CLASSIC FRENCH CHICKEN LIVER PATÉ
Give this as a hostess gift with a nice baguette and a
bottle of Chardonnay from France or Niagara.
2 tbsp unsalted butter
½ lb chicken livers, cleaned
½ cup white onion or shallots, finely chopped
2 tsp fresh thyme, finely chopped
½ cup dry white wine
Salt and pepper to taste
• Melt butter in a pan, add
onions and thyme and cook
until onions are translucent,
about 10 minutes.
• Add wine and reduce for
1 minute.
• Add livers and cook through,
3-4 minutes. Place everything
in a food processor, pureé to
smooth and season to taste with salt and pepper.
• Place mixture in a glass crock or decorative ramekin
and keep refrigerated until ready to give. Spread paté
on bread slices and serve with chilled white wine.
LIMONCELLO
Here is an easy recipe for
the sunny liqueur from the
Amalfi coast in Italy. The first
year I lived in Rome I made this
as a Christmas gift for everyone
in my family. On returning to
Canada for the holidays I was
stopped at Customs with a
suitcase filled with the yellow
bottles. Fortunately for me
(and my family), the Customs agent was Italian and let
me pass through with my clandestine stash!
5 large lemons, washed well
750 ml vodka, a mid-priced brand is sufficient
2 ¾ cups sugar
2 ¼ cups water
• Peel the zest from all the lemons, making sure to avoid
the white pith. Place in a large glass jar along with the
vodka. Cover and let stand for 2 weeks in a dark place.
• When ready, heat sugar and water in a small pot,
stir until sugar has completely dissolved. Let cool to
room temperature.
• Strain vodka into sugar mixture and divide into
decorative bottles for gift giving. Make sure to serve
Limoncello straight from the freezer in small sherry
glasses or shooter glasses. Salute! OH
