Manresa Memos - Bloomfield Hills
Our Mission is to help men and women grow spiritually through prayer,
reflection, guidance and teaching according to the Ignatian tradition.
Memos
Kick off your fall season
Issue #20
. . . by celebrating Manresa’s 90th anniversary
with us! If you’re reading this before Saturday,
September 24, it’s still not too late to order your
tickets (click here or call the front office at
248.644.4933). The 13th annual Gala will begin
with a 5:00 PM liturgy at the St. Nicholas Event
Center on 760 West Wattles Road in Troy. Fr.
Leo Cachat, SJ will be the main celebrant as we
honor his 50 years as a Jesuit priest. Festivities,
emceed by WJR’s Marie Osborne, will include
a silent auction, dinner, dancing and a special
testimony by one of Manresa’s community
members.
Many will recall Judge Dan O’Brien’s words
from last year’s Gala. He spoke about how the
Jesuits and Manresa formed him from a young
age and influenced his life as husband, parent
and judge. After 35 years of retreats and visits
to Manresa, where he heard God in the silence
and solitude “amidst the hustle and bustle mere
footsteps away,” Judge O’Brien further reflected:
“Where the Lord
is, love is. And at
Manresa, for whatever
reason, there is only
love. So it is no
mystery that where
He resides, where He
walks, there is light
Associate Director
Steve Raymond
and warmth, joy and
peace; in a word—love.
[Manresa] provides a venue
and guidance to shaking off
the plaque of life, exposing
what everyone desires—love.
Love for self, neighbor, spouse,
children, parents.”
Even if you can’t join us at the Gala on the 24th
I hope you will come and experience the beauty
and solitude of Manresa. As you’ll see by this
issue of Memos, there are many opportunities to
learn and pray with us . . .

Growing in Prayer
Do you want to “improve” your prayer life? If so, you’re ahead of
many in taking on this challenge. Still, you need a way of achieving
your goal. If what you’ve done in the past were enough, you’d simply
stay with it. But to build on the foundation you’ve laid, you need new
materials, new techniques. What might these be, and where might
you find them?
That’s the purpose of our Growing in Prayer workshop: to introduce
you to new ways of praying so that you can find the joy, peace,
happiness or whatever else you’re seeking.
We will explore praying
through:
• Traditional prayers
• Lectio divina
• The Examen
• Silence
• Gospel meditation
• Centering prayer
Don’t know these ways of praying? Join us and give them
a try. The Lord just might be waiting for you to come.
