Manresa Memos July
July — September 2015
Issue 13
Our Mission is to help men and women grow spiritually
through prayer, reflection, guidance and teaching
according to the Ignatian tradition.
Greetings from our New Associate Director
The beauty of Manresa is in full bloom as evidenced by the lush grounds,
the swift growth of grass, the ample flow of the river and the multitude of
God’s furred and feathered creatures everywhere. The opportunity to be
present on these grounds on a daily basis continues to be a blessing and
brings me great serenity—when I’m not suffering angst about how much
there is to learn in my new Associate Director’s position . . . Hugh made it
look so easy!

Associate Director
Steve Raymond
Even so, the warm welcome and gentle gibes during my first few weeks have made the
transition from my law practice one of great enjoyment, and I’m deeply grateful for the
support I’ve already received from so many staff, volunteers and daily Mass attendees.
It is my hope that, with God’s grace, we may come to an ever deeper understanding of
Ignatian spirituality by deepening our relationship with Christ through daily prayer and with
demonstrated empathy and compassion for others. Please pray for me that I may always
act humbly and in the interest of Manresa and the people we serve.
I would like to thank Fr. Fran Daly and the Board of Directors for giving me the opportunity
to work at this very special place. I’d also like to thank the staff for their daily assistance
while I learn my new role. Finally, a very special thanks to Hugh Buchanan for the
business organization he has developed over the last seven-plus years, which I’ve been
fortunate to inherit. Hugh’s keen business sense and multiple other talents, along with
his dogged and tireless efforts, have enabled Manresa to grow in a healthy fashion. He
leaves behind a legacy that will long endure. God bless you in your retirement, Hugh. We
hope to continue seeing you here at Manresa often!
Grace and peace,
P.S. I encourage you to take advantage
of Manresa’s upcoming offerings. The
Married Couples Retreat is set for the
weekend of July 31, while opportunities for
Individually Directed Retreats continue
in July and August. September kicks off
a variety of opportunities: “An Overview
of Ignatian Spirituality” mini-course with
six presenters, Fr. Steve Hurd’s Bible
study on “The Prophets,” Fr. Justin Kelly’s
seminar “Insights from Psychology,”
and “Growing in Prayer” presented by
Fr. Hurd and Keller McGaffey. Also, Joe
Olesnavage and I will be facilitating a
reading group “Of Books and Men” with
Fr. Bernie Owens’ book More Than You
Could Ever Imagine. Look inside for all
the details!

INDIVIDUALLY DIRECTED RETREATS
remaining summer dates: July 20 to 29 & August 17 to 26
Each summer Manresa sets aside ten
(and only ten) days each month for
individually directed silent retreats. We
invite Jesuits and experienced men and
women to serve as directors, capable of
offering each retreatant an opportunity
for a one-on-one journey with a
compatible person traveling through
the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of
Loyola.
There’s a special atmosphere in the
house when significant numbers
of people pray in silence mutually
supported by others who give
themselves to the Lord in the same way.
They grow close in silent communion
even in the absence of conversation.
Your retreat begins with 6:00 PM dinner
on your arrival and ends with 9:00 AM
breakfast on the last date.
(Those who need to make a retreat shorter than eight days should stay within the respective start and end dates.)
The cost during the summer is $80 per day. Applications should be made as early as possible
either online (CLICK HERE) or by calling the front office at 248.644.4933.
