The world’s newest Marian shrine
and a place of spiritual importance,
see an apparition of the Virgin Mary
holding baby Jesus on a wall at this
picturesque country church.
Perched on the edge of Myponga
Reservoir, this pretty town is at the centre
of rich grazing and dairy country, where
herds of Friesian cows are often joined at
dusk by mobs of grey kangaroos. There’s
a good weekend craft and produce market
and a boutique brewery.

Who founded McLaren Vale?
Apparently the town began when
Thomas Hardy purchased the Tintara
vineyard. If you hear a bell tolling just
as the first grapes are ready to pick,
it will be coming from Wirra Wirra,
where the bell is rung to signal both
the start and end of vintage.

Yankalilla Bay is one of the few places

rare Leafy Seadragon. Rapid Bay

Want to avoid tan lines? You can
at Maslins, Australia’s first official
nude beach. Look out for the Nude
Olympics held each year around
Australia Day. Leave McLaren Vale
via Tatachilla Road and follow it to the
coast.
20 Port Noarlunga Aquatic Reserve
You’ll find this amazing marine
environment, including a gigantic
reef, off the esplanade at Port
Noarlunga. Don a snorkel and mask
and marvel at the variety of fish.
