Spring Forum.
ABRA representatives attended the “Spring Forum” on
the 17th September at Aldinga Institute organised by the
Southern Community Coalition and the McLaren Vale
Wine & Tourism Association.
Representatives of Government Departments as well as
Ministers and other politicians spoke and answered
questions about development and the future of the
Willunga Basin as well as the Southern areas of
Adelaide generally. Over 100 people attended.
Aldinga On Display.
We trust many of you enjoyed the ‘Aldinga On
Display’ event on October 17th.
Representatives of the Aldinga-Sellicks Alliance
(including ABRA) prepared and planned this event with
sponsorship from council.
Meeting with Council engineers.
Committee reps met with Council engineers to discuss
concerns re the re-development of both Aldinga Beach
and Quinliven Roads currently being undertaken by
Council.
Photocopier purchase.
The heavy duty photocopier available through the
Aldinga Community Centre upgrading to a colour
machine is to be purchased by ABRA.
Australia Day Breakfast.
Planning has commenced for the 2010 Australia Day
Breakfast. Volunteers will be needed to help with
the running of the event on the day. If you can help
please contact a committee member.
Don’t miss November’s meeting.
The Manager of the South Australian based
company Petratherm has been engaged to speak
about their ‘hot rock’ power generation plant at
Paralana (in Northern South Australia) at the
November General Meeting. This promises to be
an interesting and informative session about an
exciting form of alternative and renewable energy
production.

As explained by our guest speaker at the October ABRA General Meeting, “Data Dot” property identification
marking kits are available to the elderly or other people who feel at risk of theft. These marking kits consist of a
glue which contains tiny ‘data dots’ invisible to the naked eye but which show up under ultra violet light. Each
kit’s dots have a unique number code which can be traced back to the owner by police from a national database.
Therefore, if your property is stolen, there is much more likelihood it will be returned to you without the need to
engrave or otherwise mark your property for identification purposes.
Some kits are available at Aldinga Police station free of charge through Watch SA.

Road works are an important aspect
of maintaining a town or city's
infrastructure. Bad roads affect
transport, tourism and local
business. They are also just
uncomfortable and irritating,
especially to rates and taxpayers
when they stop and think about it.
But when it appears that every road
into or out of our area is being
worked on at the same time, it
stretches ones patience. Detours
are a great help when having to
negotiate your way around roadwork.
But when that first detour sends you
straight into another road closure,
and that one detoured into yet
another, well that’s just
infuriating. A little bit of
forward planning and coordination
between work crews would save a lot
of headaches for motorists.
I know, I know. It’s really nothing
in the overall scheme of the
universe. At least we have roads to
be maintained. Just so long as the
boss is as understanding when you're
late for work. Again.

Sometimes we feel tired and lack energy. We may even consult a GP in
hope of a diagnosis. Tests may follow but may fail to diagnose an illness
or problem. In these circumstances it is suggested that we try 20 – 30
minutes of walking, stretching, yoga or T’ai Chi. If we are actually well
despite how we felt earlier we should feel better for the exercise. If
however we feel worse follow up with the doctor to investigate the cause
further.
Bottom Strength
The biggest muscles in the body are the gluteus maximus (glutes) and
they are often the most neglected, not deliberately but because they are
out of sight we don’t think about them. Also as adults we get into the
habit of using only the quads and hamstrings. Climbing stairs, lifting
objects and even walking require use of bottoms but mostly we rely on
the muscles around the femur (quads). It may take a deliberate effort to
use the glutes more both in everyday life and by exercising with ‘mini
squats’ and deeper knee squats. Do these keeping some weight back on
the heels, pushing into the heels as we rise and at the top squeezing the
quads and glutes.
Middle Body Muscles
Middle muscles include abs, obliques, lats and pecs i.e. any muscles that
assist posture such as standing and sitting. (This means that in addition to
abdominal muscles, the core area is made up of the muscles of the back
and shoulder, pelvic muscles, transverse abdominus (TVA), gluteal
muscles, and even hamstrings). The best way to strengthen these middle
muscles is through dynamic movements that we use in real life. In
addition we can do mini crunches correctly and planks and bridges lying
face down.
Mrs. Obama’s Arms
Mrs. Obama is reported to shape her arms in the gym with two basic
exercises. With weights in each hand she does bicep and tricep curls.
Biceps are easiest. She does 3 sets of 10 curls. There are many ways to
do tricep curls, overhead, or lower to the side, again 3 sets of 10
repetitions. Frequency and the weight she uses are not reported. My
guess is she has hand weights of 5 to 8 Kilograms and frequency is 3 to 4
times per week.

They’re Family. But Does That
Make It Ok?
Although made in 08, it’s only
just been released here, appearing
quietly on our video store
shelves.
Ryan Reynolds stars, showing his
versatility as a dramatic actor in this story of loss, grief
and forgiveness. Fans will still be pleased to see some
of his almost trademark realistic levity in some scenes
and he certainly portrays his character as a likeable guy,
but holding on to some serious emotional demons.
Character driven, it relies on strong performances from
all the cast and they deliver with moving and authentic
embodiments of the characters they play.
Production value is of a good standard, with rich but
simple photography allowing the viewer to be present
with the on screen family, sharing the uncomfortable
conflicts as well as the intimate moments.
This is a story of a family with deep emotional
problems, some of which viewers may be able to relate
to. But this is where the audience opinions will vary.
Some will want to see a warm, loving reconciliation
between the affected family members at the end, where
everything that has passed is just pushed behind them,
to be forgotten amidst the happy embraces.
And then there will be those that will demand
confrontation and retribution for what has transpired.
They will want to see the father humbled by the son,
publically shamed and punished for his behaviour and
mistreatment, forgiveness not even crossing their
minds.
A strong family drama, with deep undertones and an
engaging story. But a story that will either inspire or
frustrate, depending which side of the family fence
you’re on.
Hopefully the ending is on your side. Eddie

so? It’s because Tai Chi stimulates the body energy, life force or the
“chi”. Without it areas surrounding joints and the joints will stiffen. It’s a
good thing is that these benefits are not confined to T’ai Chi; they flow
also from general stretching, Pilates and yoga.

U3A Aldinga Inc.
For seniors looking for mental, spiritual and physical activities or entertainment and art
there is abundance of everything for retirees in the U3A (University of the third Age)
Aldinga. The U3A started in France 1972 and became international in 1975. It gained
recognition by the UN and UNESCO.
The first term of our group started in January 1997 with 48 members and five different
courses. It has links to the Universities and now up to 30 Courses and Activities a term
like:
History
Music
Poetry
Literature
Theatre (Bookings for the Dunstan Theatre)
Computing
Philosophy
Discussion Groups
Lecture Series
Films
Walking
Cycling
Excursions
Senior Adventurers
A Luncheon Club and other
Social Activities
The Creative Writing Group compiled a collection of their work and published a book ‘Voices in the Wind’ in 2005.
The Aldinga Group has about 200 Members and is the best I have come across with a wonderful friendly atmosphere. Anybody
can participate in learning, teaching, planning or administration and join in any course. The U3A has no academic requirements,
offers no rewards or credentials and caters for people with a wealth of life and work experiences.
Membership Fee is: $ 20 for Singles and $ 35 for 2 people at the same address per year. Excursions are extra. All courses and
activities are free.
I came to Aldinga in 2004 from Peterborough. I had no family, friends or contacts in Aldinga. The first thing I found was the
Shopping Centre. There I learned about the Community Centre and its programs. I joined the ‘Friendship Group’, which has
closed a while ago. A few months later I became also a member of ‘The Coastal Capers’ – also a gem for the elderly in the Community. But after taking courses in TAFE in Peterborough I wanted more variety and heard by accident of the U3A.
The U3A changed my life! The acceptance and tolerance of that organisation is unique. All my life I had to prove myself, was
confronted by prejudice because of the financial status of my family or myself or the rank in my career or my birth country.
But in the U3A all that fell away. I felt at home, relieved and relaxed, which led to great happiness after a tough life.
At one meeting I heard a man say:’ The U3A saved my life’. – I believe him.

Submissions of Decorated Trees sought for
Community Cultural Event this December
Willunga Uniting Church hosts its 7th Annual
Christmas Tree Festival, this December.
This cultural event is a showcase for creative minds.
Either as a collective or as an individual entries are
now sought to exhibit a decorated tree.
The Country Women's Association who inspired
many with their delightfully detailed tree last
year are in the planning process for their 2009 entry.
Many other organizations, individuals and businesses
are participating.
The festival display is open December 5th & 6th
from 10am to 4pm.
There will be many things to investigate for all ages.
Explore the walking trail, visit the new community
complex, indulge in a Devonshire tea, browse
through the Christmas crafts.
Enjoy a display of over 40 decorated trees and
lodge your popular vote.

MARKET UPDATE – A WINTER BOOM
The Aldinga Bay area experienced one of its best quarterly sales
period in a long time. The median house price for the 3 month period
from July to September 2009 leaped to $309,000 while the number of
house sales was quite strong at 104. The graphs below show a very
healthy picture for sellers without placing any undue strain on buyers
who are keen to move into the area.

While the number of house sales for the most recent quarter may not
be a record result, it matched the number of sales recorded over the
seasonally ‘busy’ periods of spring and summer. The only thing that
stopped more house sales during this quarter was the shortage of stock
in the under $350,000 range.
At the time of writing this article, 2 weeks into October, there were
approximately 50 listings of houses for sale in the Aldinga Bay priced
under $350,000. And most of these will have sold by the end of
November, so unless more listings come onto the market, buyers will
be clamoring over the limited availability in the area. Great for the
sellers, but no so great for the buyers.

Mental Health Week
On October 6th, community groups, service providers and locals residents came
together to support Mental Health Week in Aldinga. A display in the Aldinga
shopping centre provided information and resources to shoppers. A healthy BBQ cook-off
competition was held between young people and local police/community. Congratulations to the team
of young people who were the winners with innovative and colourful dishes! Following the B-B-Q,
our Dietitian gave a talk on the relationship between mood and food at the Aldinga Community
Library. A very big thank you to all who participated and assisted with the organisation of these
valuable events! It was great fun

Snakebite season is here…….
Each year in Australia more than 6000 dogs/cats are
envenomated by snakes. Snakes have now started to
emerge from winter hibernation. Snakes are more
dangerous at the beginning of spring, because they
are more venomous, and in addition are more
aggressive due to breeding.
Types of snakes in our area
Brown and black snakes are the most common snakes
in our region. Both of these snakes are generally
dangerous only if annoyed – they will escape if they
have the chance. Unfortunately the natural behaviour
of dogs and cats is to chase anything that moves, and
this includes snakes!!
Signs of snakebite
The signs vary depending on factors such as type of
snake, location of bite and amount of venom injected.
Signs can take a few minutes to several hours to
occur (in cats can take up to 24-48 hours), and can
progress rapidly to death if not treated.

found. Occasionally with a black snake bite
there will be swelling at the site, but never
rely on finding this.
Cats – in addition to the above signs are often found
presented as paralysed and ‘floppy’.
Some dogs will suffer acute collapse and then a
temporary recovery – this is a sign that they have
received a lethal dose of venom. So NEVER assume
that the worst has passed, because they will collapse
again later and deterioration will be fast and life
threatening.
What to do
Contact your vet immediately if you suspect that a
snake has bitten your pet, or if you have seen your
pet with a snake. The faster your pet is treated; the
better the prognosis for survival.

SELLICKS CFS
Unfortunately we saw a rise in reported crime during September and
the first half of October for the area. The majority of this crime was
opportunistic and involved theft from properties, cars and building
sites. Graffiti has also remained prevalent in the area although vastly
under reported to police.
On the positive side the number of persons apprehended by Aldinga
Police for these offences was also very high and this was due in part
from information passed on by the public. I can’t stress enough the
need for information from the community as this greatly assists us in
apprehending offenders and protecting the community.
Fortunately we have had a large amount of rainfall during winter and
also into early spring which means that the dams and reservoirs are
mostly at capacity allowing for good water supply for the summer.
The down side of this is that fuel loads for the Fire Danger Season are
much higher than the previous couple of years which will provide a
higher fire risk with the increased undergrowth.
Members of the public can assist police and fire service members in
their endeavors by slashing vegetation that has grown during the
winter months, clearing leaves and branches from gutters and
checking fire fighting equipment such as sprinklers, hoses, water
tanks and fire extinguishers. Most importantly report any suspicious
behaviour to police in rural or scrub areas in a timely matter so that
we can investigate.
Sadly again this year we have had to attend more than our fair share
of fatal and serious injury motor vehicle/cycle crashes in our district.
These tragic occurrences have a devastating impact on the families of
the victims as well as a wide ranging impact on our community.
Research shows that a large number of persons killed or seriously
injured in accidents are still not wearing a seatbelt.
During November the Aldinga Police will be paying particular
attention to motorists who fail wear their seatbelts. Remember the
driver of a motor vehicle is also responsible for passengers in their
vehicle under the age of 16 years and will also receive a fine should a
passenger not be wearing a seatbelt.
For readers who are not aware the Aldinga Police Station is located at
13 McRae Street, Aldinga Beach directly opposite the Veterinarian
Surgery and we welcome any enquires. The Police Station
front office is open from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Friday,
with the exception of public holidays and police can be contacted on
Ph. 8556 6541. Outside of these hours the nearest Police Station
service is at Christies Beach where there is a 24 hours front office
service for members of the public to call in if they have matters that
require personal attendance at a Police Station.
For those new to the area please be advised that Aldinga Police
operate a 24 hour, 7 days a week patrol service in the Willunga Basin
area. For patrol attendance please ring either 000 for life threatening
emergencies or 131444 for other patrol attendance.

just around the corner. Late seasonal rains
boosting growth of vegetation is adding to
the fuel load (the amount of fuel available to
a fire). Looking at the heartbreak caused by
bush fires in the last 12months it is time to
think that it doesn’t always happen to
someone else. Now is the time to review your

Why does the Fire Siren go off?
What does it mean??
The Fire Siren you can hear is one of the
earliest form of public alarms used. This
dates back to World War 1 to warn of
imminent air raids. The CFS use of the Fire
Sirens changes from area to area. At Sellicks
CFS and through the Kyeema group the
sirens are only used between dawn and dusk.
The siren is not only indicative of a fire, it
may be any form of emergency eg. road
crash. The fire siren isn’t always activated, it
depends on what & where we are responding
to. The MFS / CFS Communications centre
can also activate the siren remotely, if
needed, by phone to alert Fire fighters of a
callout. The siren also alerts local residents to
the fact that our fire appliance is heading out
to give assistance.

G’day, had a few more questions about irrigation, but first let’s pick up on
Pam Hailstone’s article again.
Two fashions in current gardening are: the succulent solution and the
Grasses Gig. While they are both useful & can be attractive there are
some pitfalls. Not all succulents are tough enough for extremes of weather
& weeds will grow through them. Make sure conditions are right & there
is access for weeding-they cannot be walked on or through.
Grasses, I fear, are suffering the same fate as ‘natives’ did some years
ago. The idea spread about was ‘mix them haphazardly, plant & forget”.
Most grasses look best as singles or groups of one species among other
plants, such as Lavenders, Hebes, Correas, Daisies, etc. Very smart
modern affects can be made with bold masses of one species of grass-eg:
one Dianella type. When grass types are mixed they just don’t make it
visually & very quickly resemble a neglected weed patch. Most
ornamental
grasses need
care & should
be cut hard once
a year &
fertilized
appropriately.
If we look to our
own Australian
plants, the best
ornamental
grasses (ones
that won’t
become pests) plus the choicest succulents our gardens will flourish on
natural rainfall.
There are great possibilities for creating fabulous gardens that are right
for local conditions, good for the environment, beautiful & REAL. Let’s
do it!

Thanks Pam there’s some great advice, so lets turn our area green, native
style.
Back to irrigation, you
don’t have to run the
main supply pipe to
every plant in your
garden, you run feeder
tubes (4mm pipe, barb
on 1 end, drip on the
other), don’t make
them to short, because
you can move them
around as the plant
grows or in the case of
a veggie patch, every
time you re-crop. Find
a store that keeps a complete range of irrigation & they will steer you in
the right direction, McLaren Vale Mitre 10 has a huge range of irrigation
supplies, that’s where I go. While we are on water, this time of the year
people tend to over water, just because it reaches 28 degrees, doesn’t
mean that it is hot & the plants are thirsty, plants are like kids, they try to
‘con’ you. What you will see, is the new growth will wilt slightly, so the
‘knee jerk’ reaction is to water, water, don’t panic they got to toughen up
for summer, to much water now, will have a detrimental affect in the heat
in summer (you will have real soft growth that will burn in the heat, so
don’t be ‘conned’. If in doubt, buy yourself a water meter, very simple to
use, is excellent for small plants & vegies which probably need the most
care.

Larger trees & shrubs have to be encouraged to have a deeper root
growth, so withholding water for a couple weeks at a time; this time of
year is a great way to do it.
Time to put citrus trees into the ground, ground temperature is starting to
warm, so now is the ideal time for them to take off. Make sure you
fertilize & water in well. Roses are now starting to flower, a bit late
because of the extended cold, but spent blooms should still be removed,
& what this will do is to extend the flowering period. Time to fertilize
again, use appropriate fertilizers for natives & citrus remember natives
have zero phosphorus & citrus needs a specialised fertilizer. For everything else try Seamungus & Seasol, what this will do is to encourage
stronger root growth. For those of you that have acid loving plants like
Camellias & Azaleas, give them a feed of Iron Chelates, this will help

Thrips are a huge problem this time of the year, so keep on top them, red
spider mite eggs will be hatching soon, just a couple of pests to look out
for. Mow your lawns as this will encourage new growth & also fertilize
now also. Keep on top of the weeds in your garden, we are almost there,
there are very few weeds in summer. Early fruit trees will soon load up
with fruit; consider how much fruit you need. Removing the excess fruit
from the tree will benefit the tree & therefore giving you larger & better
quality of fruit, & don’t forget to water, water while the fruit is on the
tree. Birds will soon start attacking your fruit & veg, find a way to deter
them, eg; plastic snakes, cd’s etc.

Dear Editor,
May I take the liberty of writing to you. Firstly, I would
like to thank you for such a wonderful newsletter ‘
Coastal Views ‘. Being a new resident of Aldinga my
wife and I find it very interesting and helpful indeed. My main point of this letter is to bring to your
attention the ever increasing problem of ‘ Graffiti ‘ in
the Aldinga area. It is a problem which is difficult to
police but the deterrents that are in place are inadequate
and too soft. These mindless imbeciles, if caught,
should be dealt with severely, failing that then their
irresponsible parents should be brought to book and
punished. I personally believe all concerned should be
named and shamed. This is a disease that is spiraling
out of control. Unless something is done about it
quickly then Aldinga will soon become unattractive and
distasteful.

Chenoweth Family Perpetual Trophy for exceptional service to the community, at the recent Aldinga Community Centre Annual General Meeting,
James has been a volunteer computer tutor for 2 years
and has introduced some exciting new computer courses
including Vista, Internet Plus and Social Network,
Skype & Twitter.
James also designs the Aldinga Community Centre
newsletter which is distributed each term plus is always
busy around the Centre upgrading the computers and has
introduced a network for the Centre.
Thanks for the email, graffiti is an abhorrent act that must
be dealt with. We can all do our part by making note of it
when we see it, taking a photo or two and passing
information on to our local police. The more intelligence
the police receives, the more chance they have of
successfully identifying these parasites, these bottom feeders,
these primitive, under educated drains on society ...sorry,
got a little carried away there...

Last issue there was a letter from Michelle of Port
Willunga.
I’d like to assure Michelle that there are many
people who have had experiences like hers and
would not ridicule her. There is an organisation
called ‘Australian Cosmic Connection Adelaide’
where people meet and discuss sightings and other
such things, or to learn more about them. Meetings
are held once a month at the Marion Bowling Club.

Bushfire Ready Workshop
It is important that landholders living in fire prone areas
understand the level of bushfire risk, which includes the
direction a fire is likely to come, the fuel load such as
grass and leaf litter around the property and whether you
will stay or go in event of a fire.
Community Education Officers from the CFS and Mark
Gloster, Willunga CFS Brigade Captain, will be the presenters for this workshop. Property owners will have the
opportunity to assess the fire risk and action plan on two
properties as part of a practical exercise on the Saturday
morning.
Learn about property planning for bushfire protection – to
stay or go and fire safety requirements around the home
such as pumps, hoses and sprinklers.
