Successful ABBTA AGM
Networking At The Old Vine
July 29th, 2015.
Hazel Wainwright returns unopposed as Chair
of Aldinga Bay’s Business and Tourism
Association. “It’s been an incredibly busy
three years and it’s great to reflect back upon those years and
realize how far the Association has come since it was
co-founded by our present Mayor Lorraine Rosenberg and that
we have grown from strength to strength”.
The AGM was a significant success with the atmosphere being alive in the cool night of July as REPTILEMONITORS gathered an award for promoting the region here and
overseas.
Entertainment was provided by the up and coming artist
Aden Quinn who collected another four bookings solely on the
basis of his performance that night. Door prizes of fantastic
Cradle of Hills Wine donated by the Artisan winemakers Paula
and Tracy Smith at Sellicks Hill along with cooler bags donated by the Aldinga Bendigo Community Bank.
“We want to find what is unique in our region and bring
it to light” said Hazel “…we don’t impose, we facilitate. I’m
proud to be a part of Aldinga Bay and privileged to have these
opportunities to represent people and businesses and aid them
in what they are trying to achieve - be it issues with council,
how to grow your business, your market at Aldinga Institute,
events and much, much more. We have a great team including
Martin Howells, Anatoly Patrick, Jess Sweet, Steve Manning,
Sue Turner, Toff West (of Home Grain Bakery fame), Debbie
Hutchison and Janette Francis. We have people in the
community who are assisting as well, such as Lauren Jew,
Susan Benger and Matt Adams. It’s truly a community effort”
“There is so much potential here in our region and what
we have achieved in the past is only the beginning, these a
chievements include: The Tour Down Under, putting us on the
world stage with record stall holder attendance and getting
great exposure for local businesses and our area. Our donation
of a “heart start” machine for the Aldinga shopping centre. Our
Christmas Funfair at the Surf Club, which included free
activities for children and their families. Promotion on
“South Aussie with Cosi” that showcased our region and
our businesses in a way which had not been done before.
It’s about community and how best ABBTA can serve it.
I love my community, and intend to work hard to put us
on the map.”
1975 and it’s been the most popular hit for British rock
band Queen. It is also known for the unusual way it was
composed, with no chorus it consists of sections – a
ballad, a guitar solo, operatic passage and a hardrock
piece.
Sisters of Abundance Choir celebrate their 10th
Anniversary this year and one of the songs they enjoy
singing is Bohemian Rhapsody. Sung in two part
harmony, complete with choreographed movement, the
girls really get into the music and give it their best.
Their best is what they will be presenting in October at
“Sing it again, Sista” – their 10th Anniversary concert.
The concert features songs they’ve sung over the last ten
years and including some favourites Bohemian
Rhapsody, Rhythm of Life and a medley of songs from
“Sister Act” which was their first and most requested
song.
The Sisters are calling out to all former members to come
along and celebrate with them. They have achieved
where they are today with the help of past members who
are no longer in the choir and would really like to have
them present when they celebrate their 10th milestone.
As a community choir it has been a privilege to provide
entertainment at many community functions over the last
10 years and an invitation is extended to all members of
the community to come along and celebrate with the
Sisters as they “Sing it again, Sista”
Their “SING IT AGAIN, SISTA” Concert is on Sunday
11th October at 2pm at the Hopgood Theatre, Noarlunga
Centre. Tickets are $20ea, Group booking (10+) $15ea,
children 12 years and under $15ea, and are now on sale
through the Hopgood Theatre.
Part proceeds from the concert will be given to charity.

150th Anniversary for Local Church.
On Sunday 4th October, St Ann’s Anglican Church,
Aldinga will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the
laying of the foundation stone. There will be a special
service at 10 am followed by lunch in the hall, and at 2
pm the organist and choir will present “A Pleasant Sunday Afternoon”.

Have you ever considered becoming a guide at the Willunga
Court House & Slate Museum.
We really need more volunteers to meet and greet our
visitors and make sure that they enjoy their visit to the
Museums.
An orientation and training will be provided for new
volunteers. As little as three hours each month would make

Martins - Port Willunga.
THOMAS and MARY MARTIN with their five
children arrived from Devonshire in 1840 on the ship
Lysander.
The Martins were seafaring folk so it is not surprising
that they settled at Port Willunga, where Thomas
became licensee of the Pier Hotel.
Additions nearby, believed to have been built by the
Martins, became a haven of rest for many a weary
traveller who enjoyed the hospitality of Thomas and
Mary, and the building became affectionately known
as Uncle Tom's Cabin.
"Springrove", Inman Valley, 1880s
Richard Martin, the eldest son, took up land at Inman
Valley as early as 1860 and built a small wattle and
daub cottage on Section 266, the property later known
as Galloway. In 1869 Richard bought three more
Sections, which had been owned by John Robertson
and left to his sons-in-law H.J. Parkinson and Herb,
Grosvenor from the wattle and daub home on Section
263 John Robertson conducted the first Post Office in
Inman Valley, having been appointed Post Master in
1855.
Richard, his wife Elizabeth (nee Higgs), and three children took up residence on Section 263, and the home became known as Springrove and later-Orange Grove. Six
more children were born there.
Hurtle, son of Richard and Elizabeth, married Elizabeth
Hunt and with their daughter Medora returned to live at
Springrove in 1914.
By 1923 Elizabeth had opened a shop and tea-room in a
large room attached to a dwelling on the opposite side of
the road. Hurtle died in 1956 and Elizabeth lived alone
for some time and died in 1964.
Thomas, another son of Thomas and Mary, the original
pioneers, became Harbour Master at Willunga and featured in the rescue of survivors from the wreck of the Star
of Greece. The inn served as a hospital during the event.
Thomas junior's second wife was Mary, daughter of John
and Jemima Hancock of Belmont, Inman Valley. A son,
Stan, married Alice Dickinson, whose parents were proprietors of the Victory Hotel at Sellick's Hill.
Stan and Alice purchased Belmont, which until 1985
has been occupied by the Martin family.
Alfred Bird - Aldinga
ALFRED BIRD,
butcher of Aldinga, is a son of Mr. George Bird, who
occupied the position of first Chief Ranger of Court
Aldinga, A.O.F. He was born at Adelaide in 1857, and
at the termination of his studies, which were conducted
at Aldinga, engaged with Mr. L.
Conrad, the prominent provision
merchant, of the above named
city, remaining with him for
about six months. Mr. Bird then
returned to Aldinga and became
associated with the business of
Mr. F. Hart, nine years later taking over the concern, which he
has carried on successfully ever
since. He has confined his attention solely to the butchering

years which have elapsed since
his establishment on his own account, and has gained
the confidence of the public to such an extent that his
connection now extends throughout the whole of the
Aldinga and Willunga districts. The gentleman under
review served one term as a member of the local District Council; and is very prominently connected with
the Order of Foresters in the district, having passed
through all the chairs of office during a membership
extending over thirty years. At the present moment he
occupies the position of Chairman of Trustees. In 1881
Mr. Bird married Sarah Ann, second daughter of the
late Mr. William Cliff, and of it, family of twelve children, two sons and seven daughters survive. Mr.
Charles George Bird is his father's coadjutor in the
management of the business.

"Get baptised!" (How appropriate is that!)
Our dry twenty year-old Jake was at work at the time - on a
"zombie" shift – just watching this three metre cylindrical
grinder do what three metre cylindrical grinders do (hence
the name of the shift).
He had been pestering God for months, if not years; and
was at it again. "God, how, just how am I supposed to live
this Christian life?" And this time he was fasting.
God interrupted him with a very clear audible voice, "Jake
– get baptised!" "If there had been anyone standing near
me they would definitely have heard it" Jake declares (and
of course been startled).
Sent to church as a child so his dad could mow the lawn,
his first touch of the reality of it all came at age eleven
when he saw "The Jesus Movie" at the Christies Beach
Drop in Centre.
Way back then he found himself weeping to discover that
there was in fact a real Jesus in a specific time in history, in
a definite geographical place, who was tortured to death on
a real wooden cross for Jake’s sins. It was no longer just a
story!
But however useful this might have been, it was not until
age seventeen when a question by a youth worker, "How
is your walk with the Lord going?" got him to realise there
was such a thing as a walk.
Then, at age twenty he was so bothered by the still
unresolved question that he began to "demand" answers:
"Just exactly ‘how’ do you follow God?" And of course the
best one to ask was God.
Some time after being dutifully baptised (and who wouldn’t!) Jake became the Regional Coordinator for Christian
Surfers in South Australia and went about "doing good",
throughout Australia and overseas.
Jake followed his Saviour, who heard His Father’s
confirming words as He arose from the baptism waters,
“This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased” (you
can read it in Matt. 3.17).

Lawn Bowling
Brings New Perspective To Retirees
New bowlers at Aldinga Bay Bowling Club are
pleased that the decision to take up lawn bowls
has brought a new perspective to their lives.
Maureen and Paul Knights, recently retired retailers, have found that learning bowls and
spending time socially interacting with members at Aldinga Bay Bowling Club, has given
them a rewarding new social and sporting outlet. They have found a stronger connection
too, with their extended family members who
are also keen bowlers.
Maureen and Paul took advantage of free loan
bowls and introductory coaching offered, and
were recently welcomed as members into the
friendly Club by President Doug Johnsson
OAM .
Members of Aldinga Bay Bowling Club are encouraging local residents to visit their Port
Road bowling club on Sunday 13 Sept when a
‘Come Try Bowls’ Day will be hosted, providing
an opportunity for those who’ve never tried the
popular game, to be introduced to the basics.

The Get Together Club
A club exists in Aldinga Beach for adults with a
disability and their families.
The group encourages friendship, fun, connection and
inspiration.
It is the only group of its kind in the southern area.
The first meeting held at the Aldinga Life Care Hall was
a great success, with families sharing a meal, playing
games, and getting to know each other.
A variety of activities are planned for the monthly group
including singing, painting, puppet making, and guest
chefs. Ideas for activities are welcome and encouraged.
The Get Together Club has received a Community
Grant from the City of Onkaparinga and is also
supported by Minda Incorporated, Carer Support and
Disability SA. New members are always welcome.
The Get Together Club is held on the first Friday of

Trees For Life needs volunteers to help
reach its annual target of growing around
more than 500,000 local native seedlings
for South Australian farmers and revegetation projects.
South Australia has one of the worst land clearing
records in the nation, so the seedlings grown through
Trees For Life’s Tree Scheme not only help revegetate
the land, but also help counteract some of South Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Trees For Life seedlings are also local natives. This
means they are water efficient, adapted to local
conditions, occur naturally and therefore have a higher
survival rate, pose no risk of becoming weed species,
provide homes for local fauna and restore local
ecosystems.
To be a volunteer grower all you need is a sunny backyard, and the commitment to care for the seedlings every
day over a six-month period.
“Every November growers are given soil, seed, fertiliser,
gravel mulch and a step-by-step instruction booklet,”
says Trees For Life Chief Executive Officer Natasha
Davis.
“They then fill the tubes with the soil and fertiliser
mix, sow the seed and water the seedlings every day
over summer. Once germinated, the seedlings
require full sun, making them hardy enough to
withstand the South Australian climate.”
Trees For Life also offers grower workshops for
those wanting to learn how to sow and raise their
seedlings and have ongoing access to a Tree
Scheme support officer.
By becoming a Trees For Life grower you will help
address environmental problems such as the loss of
native vegetation, water quality, biodiversity,
habitat and erosion – as well as enjoying the
personal rewards!

Major features for this year’s show include
Xtreme freestyle Motorbike Show by Australia’s #1 international motorcycle trials rider
with over 25 years experience, Adrian thrills
the crowd with his amazing skills on a trials
motorcycle. He masters an obstacle course with
amazing balance and a level of precision and
control found in no other sport. The shows
combine
choreography, stunt riding and showmanship
together, to bring to the public an incredible
show of amazing freestyle trials riding from a
very talented professional rider.
We also have Don’s Demo Dogs, dogs on
skateboards, playing basketball & quoits see
the obedience work of these highly trained
dogs. Animal Capers is a totally wild experience where you get to handle awesome animals, find out more about our natural world in
the Normanville Natural Resource Centre marquee. Horses in Action will have three rings
including the encourage ring for young riders,
we also have Spanish Horses performing.
See the Wobbles the clown. Clancy the Jelly
Bean Train will be returning again this year to
get you around the grounds (with a free bag of
jellybeans) on this cute 20 seat train. We have
live music on various stages throughout the
day. And the Aldinga & Sellicks Spinners and
knitters will be doing shorn to worn fleece
demo’s near the Main Hall.
The official opening will be on the Main stage
at 12 noon by Fleurieu Horticulturist and TV
presenter Kim Syrus. There will be camel &
pony rides, animal nursery, amusements, market stalls, main hall showcasing the competitive
exhibits, art pavilion, photography now housed
in our new shed, show bags, show bar and
plenty of food and lots more.....
Gates open at 9am for the public cost is $10
adult, $5 children between 5 and 15, children
under 5 free. Aged concession only.
Now is the time to be thinking about your entries for this year’s show, only a few weeks to

Notices regarding community fundraisers or coming events are published free of
charge.
All advertisers please adhere to the sizes listed below. For the best result,
layouts must be black on white background. There is a charge of $40.00 if you
want a final copy to be made from a rough draft, and $100.00 to design an
advertisement. Pictures for publication should be no larger than 800 x 600 pixels
in size. Please avoid using Microsoft Office .docx and .pdf format in
submissions. Inserts can be arranged - check with the editor for prices and
conditions.

The positioning of advertising in Coastal Views is done on a random basis
according to layout needs. If advertisers specify a location, a surcharge of
25% is added except for the first 5 pages & inside covers where a 50%
