Contact THE FOOD BASKET, Hawai`i Island’s Food Bank’s SNAP Outreach Program at: 808-933-6030 40 Holomua St. Hilo, Hi 96720 SNAP The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federally funded program administered by the state to provide assistance to families in purchasing nutritious food. ELECTRONIC BENEFIT TRANSFER (EBT) SNAP benefits are deposited into your account each month. Benefits an be accessed with an EBT card and a PIN number. HOW TO USE YOUR SNAP SNAP benefits can be used to purchase food or seeds and plant starts to grow food. However SNAP benefits can not be used to buy hot prepared foods, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, pet food, household supplies, or other non food items. Items purchased with SNAP benefits are not subject to sales tax. AM I ELIGIBLE? You are eligible to participate in the SNAP program if your household income meets the Federal Income Guidelines. Please call HOPE Services Hawaii, Inc.’s at 935-3050 or 217-5129 for a pre-screening. You may be eligible for expedited benefits if your monthly income exceeds your gross monthly income, if your household depends on a seasonal migrant farm worker or your gross monthly income is less that $150 and liquid resources are less than $100. FOR SNAP BENEFITS (FOOD STAMPS) APPLICATION: 1. Staff at The Food Basket (808-933-6030) will complete a quick prescreening to determine if you are eligible for SNAP benefits. You will need to be able to provide the following information: • • • • Citizen status of all household members Income and financial accounts Expense information, such as rent, utilities, alimony, childcare, etc. Medical expenses, if applicable 2. If you would like assistance, staff will schedule an appointment date and time. 3. If requested, the SNAP Outreach Program will assist you with your application. Your application will be submitted to DHS on your behalf if you are not able to go to a DHS processing Center. 4. DHS has 30 days to respond to your application after it is received (7 days if it is expedited). DHS will conduct a phone interview or a walk-in interview to determine you eligibility. • Required Documents: Please bring the following applicable documents to your appointment: • Photo ID • Social Security cards • Birth certificates or passports • Bank statements • Employment pay stubs • Statement of benefits (Social Security, unemployment, etc.) • Rental agreement or mortgage statement • Utility bills • Verification of childcare/child support payments • Medical bills (for disabled applicants or those over the age of 60) Please keep all original papers. Ask your SNAP interviewer to make copies.
