Come and meet the heroes of WWII, the real “Band of Brothers.” With a Hangar Dance, Currahee Challenge, re-enactors and more, it’s not hard to see why this event was named a Top 20 event by the Southeast Tourism Society! toccoahistory.com The weekend kicks off with a showing of Saving Private Ryan at the Schaefer Center at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 1. This year from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Saturday October 3 and Sunday October 4, a 21st Century Steam Train featuring locomotive #4501 will bring 700 passengers each day to Toccoa! November 7th & 8th: Toccoa Harvest Festival brings thousands of visitors to downtown. Check out over 160 craft and food vendors as well as two entertainment stages. The festival also includes children and youth activities, a classic car show, and the Currahee Artist Guild’s art exhibit and sale. Main Street Receives Multiple Grants The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Historic Preservation Division has awarded Toccoa $6,000 to be used towards updating the city’s historic resources survey. The project is set to begin in fall 2015. The city will be working with Greenhouse Consultants from Atlanta, Georgia to complete the project. The Georgia Department of Economic Development Tourism Product Development Division awarded Toccoa $2,330 to be used for wayfinding signage to help people find the visitor attractions downtown Toccoa has to offer more easily. Scarecrow Contest The 6th annual Stephens County Scarecrow Contest begins October 1 and will last through the weekend of Toccoa’s Harvest Festival on November 7-8. Citizens can vote for their favorite scarecrow, with the top three winners receiving cash awards. Voting can be done in person at WNEG Radio or City Hall. Voters can also scan a QR Code that will be placed on signs at each scarecrow. Last year over 40 scarecrows were set up around Stephens County. The Studio/Stephens County High School Art Department won first place with their “Vincent Van Crow” scarecrows (see photo). For more information, visit www.mainstreettoccoa.com. Main Street Toccoa Mission Statement The program’s mission is to improve Toccoa’s quality of life by strengthening the downtown district’s role as the community’s heart. Main Street Toccoa Vision/Program Statement Toccoa Main Street is a nonprofit organization formed to make the downtown district the economic and cultural center of the community. The overall objective is to improve the viability and appearance of the downtown district and to stimulate the long-term reinvestment through business recruitment and retention, all within the context of historic preservation.
