Long Beach Memorial presents “From a Tiny Acorn A Mighty Oak Will Grow” Fostering Excellence in Pediatric Palliative Care December 3-4, 2012 Course Director Joetta Wallace, MSN, CHPPN Course Description Palliative care is the an interdisciplinary approach to assuring physical, social and spiritual comfort for patients with serious, chronic conditions, focusing on living as well as possible with the underlying condition. This very exciting conference has been designed by clinicians from all the pediatric palliative care programs in Southern California to demonstrate and further investigate approaches to incorporating concepts of palliative care into the daily care of all clinicians. Doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, dieticians, case managers, pharmacists, respiratory, physical, occupational and speech therapists and all other members of the healthcare team will join experts in the field, along with an internationally recognized keynote presenter, in identifying ways to assist these very special patients and their families toward a cure of their disease, to better live with the condition or if necessary, to die peacefully in a dignified supported fashion surrounded by loved ones. Course Objectives After attending this course, participants should be able to: 1. Discuss the past and future of palliative care for children and their families 2. Explore challenges to care for children as advancements in technology abound. 3. Assure excellence in interdisciplinary meetings with patients and families. 4. Recognize potential boundaries necessary in healthcare today. 5. Identify special considerations required for adolescents receiving palliative care. 6. Discuss approaches necessary to assure continuum of care into the community. 7. Differentiate between physician-assisted suicide, euthanasia, and palliative sedation. 8. Identify concerns addressed by parents regarding their needs for their children at end of life. 9. Discuss the potential life-long challenges of the surviving micro-premature infant. 10. Apply important self –care principles to themselves while working in this demanding field. Pre-Registration is required Course Location The meeting will be held in Houssels Forum, Center for Health Education, Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, 2801 Atlantic Avenue, Long Beach, California. To arrive by car, exit the 405 (San Diego) Freeway at Atlantic Avenue. The Medical Center is located three blocks south of the freeway. Turn right at Memorial Medical Center Drive, into the visitor parking lot. The Center for Health Education is located on the lower level of the medical center, below the main hospital entrance.
