Community Advisory Board
The ECU Community Advisory Board met in
April to discuss ways ECU can better meet the
needs of the communities served and increase
awareness of ECU membership benefits.
The Community Advisory Board consists of ten
individuals representing various communities
and groups within ECU’s membership. Advisory
Board members provide input and strategic
direction as to how ECU can best serve the
groups they represent. The 2013 Advisory Board
consists of Nick Adams (Wellmont Health
System), Miles Burdine (Kingsport Chamber),
David Baker (FutureFuel Chemical Company,
Arkansas), Tabetha Church (Tempur-Pedic),
George DeCroes (Eastman), Andy King
(MeadowView Marriott), Michael Lockard
(K-VA-T Food Stores, Inc.), Gary Mabrey
(Johnson City Chamber), Dr. Katherine Palmer
(Mount Carmel Pet Hospital and Hawkins
County community representative) and Vicki
Wolfe (Longview community representative).
ECU appreciates these volunteers
for their participation in providing
valuable input on our operations,
products and services.

Friends & Neighbors
“ECU Beside You” extends beyond our member relationships, it’s a commitment to the
communities we serve.
“When we enter a community, we want to be more than another financial institution. We want to
make an extraordinary difference,” said Olan O. Jones, CEO/President of Eastman Credit Union.
ECU donates to hundreds of organizations each year with the intent of giving a “hand-up and
not a hand-out”, which is a phrase commonly used by one of the newest organizations on their
social contribution list – Friends and Neighbors, Inc. of Kingsport.
The goal of Friends and Neighbors, founded by Kermit Addington in late 2011, is to reduce the
number of homeless families in the Kingsport area with school-aged children. When Addington
approached some Sunday school classes less than two years ago about the issues facing
Kingsport city’s homeless population, he never dreamed that this leap of faith would land him as president of a not-forprofit organization by the summer of 2012.
When the organization began, more than 270 children in Kingsport city schools were homeless, today that number is
over 320. The organization assists families by offering affordable housing, case management, education, training and
support to help them regain a positive position in their community. From furniture and transportation, to safe and stable
homes, Friends and Neighbors offers a hand-up by requiring families to make partial rent payments, participate in case
management and complete volunteer service hours.
In less than two years, Friends and Neighbors made dreams become realities and turned the impossible into possible
for 14 Kingsport families. Some of the organization’s accomplishments includes: receiving official not-for-profit status,
accepting office space and training facilities from the Kingsport Housing Authority, obtaining donations of three houses
and a car, receiving support from a newly formed Pastor’s Coalition, expanding the volunteer base to include interns from
ETSU, hiring a full time professional case manager, bringing in a volunteer grant writer, gaining fantastic partnerships
with area churches and experiencing their first family move out on their own.
“Making our communities better places to live is good for everyone involved,” said Jones. “We’re proud to support Friends
and Neighbors, and the great work of their board of directors and volunteers.”
If you would like to learn more about Friends and Neighbors or how you can become involved, contact them at
www.friendsandneighborsinc.com or call 423.378.2926.
