Greetings, everyone….
It was several years ago that an Illinois Jaguar Club member mentioned that I
had an airplane engine in my car, a S3 XJ6. I was quite surprised and replied
“That explains why my mileage is so bad!” The statement by the older
gentleman has “intrigued me ever since. I have really never been able to
understand what the meaning or implications were of his statement until now.
Jaguar developed the XK inline six engine during WWII. Perhaps Jaguar had
intentions of an aviation derivative, but the war ended before the design work
could be completed. I could find no record of the XK engine ever actually
being used in an aircraft. There are some references to it being used in a
military tank-the FV101 Scorpion, British armoured reconnaissance vehicle,
and in the FV107Scimita, an armoured vehicle Does George Stauffer have
one of these? We’ll have to check with him.
The XK inline-6 is very heavy and probably responsible for a majority of the S3 XJ6’s 4,000 + lbs. This kind of
weight disqualifies it for use in a light aircraft. Maybe the notion of an XK aircraft engine is an
undocumented piece of Jaguar’s history or possibly just Jaguar lore passed on from one generation to
another. So, where am I going with this? Jaguar has recently developed a turbine-powered car that
accelerates like a jet.
Jaguar, working with Bladon Jets, unveiled a hybrid concept car, the C-X75, which can accelerate from 0 to
62mph in a blistering 3.4 seconds. You may remember that we highlighted it in our December 2010
newsletter. You will find an article on page 6 of this issue that gives information that I researched on the
engine. After you read the article, you may have the same question I have: Will I need a pilot’s license to
operate it?

JOHN BOSWELL II, our Concours Chair and Chief Judge, has planned a review
session for JCNA Concours judging rules. For a sanctioned JCNA event, all judges
must be certified. Beginning in 2012, JCNA will not sanction an event that doesn’t
have certified judges. If you like to show your Jaguar in a concours event, this is your
opportunity to become a certified judge. John will provide detailed information on
the rules for judging in a Concours, both Championship and Driven classes.

A RICH HISTORY WITH THE JAGUAR
MARQUE
Our newest member of the WJL Board of Directors, Fred
Berndt, graciously allowed me to interview him at his
home recently about his experience with the Jaguar
marque. Below Fred reveals his rich history with Jaguar.

Jaguar has always been one of my favorite
marques.
When I was a student at Purdue
University, a classmate told me about the Mark V
and shared a thick catalog of all the Jaguar models.
Since then I have always loved Jaguars. While at
Purdue I was lucky to attend the Indy 500 because I
had a connection with the infield grounds keeper.
One year I met three well-dressed gentleman who
introduced me to the XK120’s and 140’s. They
were men who were involved with entering cars in
the Indy 500 races.

In 1958 I decided that I should own a Jaguar.
There were several Milwaukee dealers that
handled Jaguar sales. After becoming frustrated
with the local availability of a Jaguar, I phoned
Jaguar to inquire about becoming a dealer. A
company representative gave me an immediate
callback and made me a dealer during our
phone conversation!
Well, there was no
competition because of the excellent service I
offered buyers.
I hired dedicated Jaguar
mechanics to service each Jaguar.
My first Jaguar was a XK150 Coupe S. I sold
it shortly after I purchased it. But my next
Jaguar was a 1939 SS100 that came with an
interesting story. I purchased it from a Michigan
car collector.
He had a unique pre-war
collection of the most exotic European cars,
Bugati, Mercedes, Bentley, Alfa Romeo, and, of
course, the Jaguar. In ill health, he decided to
liquidate his collection.
He had one
idiosyncrasy: He painted the undercarriage of
each car a bright yellow! My SS100 was
featured in the classic car anthology, The Great
Cars, authored by Ralph Stein in 1967.
A double-page photo clearly displayed the yellow
undercarriage. Well, I restored the car, making
sure that the entire undercarriage was
disassembled to be painted black before reassembling it.
When I purchased my next Jaguar, a 1961
Mark 9, I decided to take delivery overseas in
Coventry, England. Most Milwaukee car buyers
had no idea of what was involved in getting their
Jaguars delivered to them. Jaguar company
suggested that an American contact Triple A to
work on overseas delivery from England. They
had no formal overseas delivery plan. Well, my
experience taught me so much that I became
one of the largest dealers of overseas delivery. I
could deliver new Jaguars directly to the home of
any Midwest owner. Eventually I sold this Mark
9 to one of the matriarchs of Milwaukee society.
She used it for about six years. Upon her death
she willed it to her nephew, who essentially
destroyed the car, both exterior and interior. His
mother phoned me, “Fred, bring a dollar and I
will give you title to the car. I suggest that you
bring a tow truck with you.”
So I did as she asked. Once the car was
restored, my wife Alberta made it her daily driver
during summers.
One time leaving the
downtown Boston Store, the young lady at the
parking kiosk asked Alberta, “What do you do
that you can drive a car like this?” Alberta
shrugged her shoulders and replied, “I’m merely
the maid at 1626 Prospect Avenue.” This was
where Alberta and I lived at that time. Eventually
I sold it to a responsible Chicagoan.
My passion for Jaguars continued. I was
fortunate to cross paths with Bob Wilke. Bob,
president of Leader Cards, was associated with
Indy 500 racing. He had purchased a 1965 EType Coupe for his wife while spending the winter
in Florida. It was painted a beautiful opalescent
silver blue metallic. He had his race car body
people paint the top and the tailgate a glossy
black. It made the car’s profile have a lower
appearance. It was truly a striking car.
in 1967 Bob called to ask me if I could get him
a new Buick Riveria - turquoise in color, for his
wife. I asked about the E-Type he had bought for
her. It now had only 800 miles on it. I asked
“Why only 800 miles? He explained, “Well, my
wife refused to drive the car because it has no
air-conditioning. She complained that it was just
too hot in Florida to be without air!”

BLADON JETS Jaguar Engine

If you read my President’s Rant on page 2 of this
issue, you know that I researched the engine that
Jaguar has used in the C-X75. The car gets its power
from two new micro-sized gas turbine engines that are
slightly larger and longer than a human forearm. The
jet-like engines feed four electric motors, which give the
car a range of 560 miles. The director at Bladon stated
"It has long been a dream to get gas turbines into a car;
the automotive industry has been trying for 50-plus
years, and it is only now that we have a viable
proposition.” So how did they create a gas turbine
engine that is fuel efficient yet can go from zero to 62
mph in 3.4 seconds? Whether sitting at a stop sign or
peeling away from it, the Bladon engine rotates
constantly at an astonishing 80,000 revolutions per
minute.
A normal car can only achieve several thousand
rpms. Unlike a jet engine, in which exhaust fumes
physically push the aircraft, the hot gasses expelled out
of the Bladon engine don't push the car forward.
Instead, the exhaust fumes from those 80,000 rpms
are utilized to generate electricity, which is stored in a
lithium-ion battery. That electricity then flows into four
electric motors, one on each wheel, which propels the
car forward for 100 miles on an electric charge alone,
or up to 560 miles with the turbines engaged. The
turbines can burn a variety of fuels as well. Jaguar
isn't the only company looking to commercialize
gas turbine engines in automobiles; Capstone
Turbine Corporation of California is placing
micro turbine engines inside buses and cars.

I told Bob that I had just taken delivery that morning
of the exact Riveria that met his wife’s needs-even the
turquoise color! Fortunately for me I took the E-Type
in trade. It became my daily driver for more than 20
consecutive summers. It was a wonderful car to own.
So at this point in my life I have only one Jaguar– a
1956 black XK140 MC Roadster. Where did I find this
award-winning Jaguar? While attending the Pebble
Beach Concours d’ Elegance some time in the mid80’s. I went to an auction session and met an
Englishman from Chichester, England, who had
brought the car for the Concours, but missed the entry
deadline. So the car was sitting in the parking lot. I
examined the car and liked what I saw. I arranged for
my niece to have the car examined; if it was all
authentic, I would mail my niece the money so she
could purchase it. It was a gem! Now it sits in my
garage.
As I reflect on my experience with the Jaguar
marque, I have always believed that Jaguar
engineering has been outstanding. However, I have
felt that the engineers spoke a different language
than the production staff. During my several visits to
Coventry I discovered that there was no real
production line, nothing was automated. However,
the coachwork was exceptional compared to the
Mercedes. In addition, Jaguar included disc brakes as
standard equipment while Mercedes did not even
offer them to customers. When Jaguar produced the
Mark II, it married quality design with engineering.
Mercedes had quality production, but not design.
I never regret my association with the Jaguar
marque for the many years. In a future article I can
share my experience with purchasing a Bentley from
Mrs.Twombley, great-granddaughter of Commodore
Cornelius Vanderbilt as well as how I acquired a rare
Hispano-Suiza.

Among the 40+ guests at our club’s Potluck this
month, held at Steve and Cindy Karstaedt’s home,
was Don Huebschen, from South Beloit, IL. Here he is
standing next to his beautiful 1956 XK140 OTS MC
roadster, in front of the Karstaedt’s home. Don found
his XK in 1972, advertised in a local shopper paper,
coincidentally owned by the Karstaedt family, the
“Stateline Shopping News. In 1990 Don had Jim
Kakuska, in Illinois restore his Jag. It looks even more
striking in person than it does here.
Over the past years Don became good friends with
Steve and Cindy. He lives just 8 miles from their
home. An interesting story was uncovered in talking
to Don about his car. Don’s older brother Dave, years
before Don found his XK, bought a Jaguar from Steve.
This was the catalyst for a friendship between these
two families that has continued to the present. Sadly,
Dave Huebschen passed away several years ago.

German Fest. We will caravan from Milwaukee to
Beloit and then head to join the Storks in
Dubuque, IL.
