October 2013 Crusiers Newsletter - Seaway Cruisers Classic Car
Seaway Cruisers Classic Car Club October 2013 News letter From the President John Miller III Fall Cruise is back, Saturday, October 19th. Linda Hurteau has put together all the details for a Fall Cruise, find the information in the newsletter. We will do the cruise and not a separate meeting for October, not enough business at this time. Some Cruisers enjoying the show at Iroquois, Ontario By the time you read this, the car shows will be done for another year (my Tiger picked up 3 trophies this year.) You will find a membership renewal form in this newsletter. We’d like to have all dues paid by December, but you can do it now and get it done early. It’s not too early to think about nominations for Officers and Board of Directors for 2014. We’ll open nominations at the November meeting at the Ogdensburg Moose Lodge. Frank Howie has made all the arrangements with 4 choices for dinner. More information in the November newsletter. Has anyone heard of valve cover racing? Would anyone be interested in making valve cover racers this winter? If we had at least 10 people interested, I think it might be fun to take an old valve cover, add four wheels and race them at the Winter Rat Party in March 2014. We can make rules and regulations that we all agree with, like it must have “4 wheels” touching the ground, it must weigh less than 10 pounds, and we can set length, width and height limits. So, what do you think? Do you have an old valve cover and a skate board? You could screw a valve cover to a skateboard, but I think the Cruisers can be more creative than that. Let me know what you think. Ans. from p. 4 Submission Deadlines: October 29, 2013 for November November 26 for December Till we cruise again on October 19th, John Miller III Seaway Cruisers Classic Car Club, Inc. ~ Established 1986 ~ PO Box 109 Heuvelton, NY 13654 [email protected] www.seawaycruisers.com Email List & Membership Chair: Linda Hurteau (315) 393-2519 [email protected] Newsletter Editor: Sandy Bigelow (315) 347-3945 [email protected] Photographer: Terry Howie (315) 394-0259 Website Manager: David Hartman (315) 600-6240 OFFICERS President: John Miller III (315) 347-3414 Co-Vice Presidents: Frank Howie (315) 394-0259 Linda Brown (315) 375-6788 Secretary: Brandon Baldwin (315) 265-2717 Treasurer: Glory Martel (315) 393-4436 DIRECTORS John Amel (315) 344-7025 Dean Marshall (315) 344-6422 Pat Matthews (315) 393-3810 Mike Hirsch (315) 344-6339 Scott Sutherland (315) 386-3455 1970 Ford Torino King Cobra One of two original test cars known to exist (From http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/ford/torino/1591708.html? refer=news and sent in by Paul Rader) The fate of prototypes and test mules is often pretty grim. After countless miles of flogging tuning and more flogging yet they're usually either banished to a dusty corner of the basement or crushed and This rare prototype is for sale by a forgotten entirely. To see a functional 43- dealer in North Carolina for year-old prototype is rare but to see one $599,900 in www.hemmings.com of this significance is truly special. The car classifieds is a 1970 Ford Torino King Cobra and it's one of just two original test cars known to exist. The product of a stillborn racing development program the car features one -of-a-kind aerodynamic upgrades and a hot Boss 429 backed by a Toploader 4speed. With links to legends like Holman & Moody and Bud Moore Engineering the King Cobra is well known among Ford royalty and documented across many printed and online publications. If you're looking for the crown jewel for your Ford collection this is the ultimate. To put the car into context you have to travel back to the infamous NASCAR ''Aero Wars'' that took place during the 1969 and 1970 Grand National seasons. With GM on hiatus from racing the competition between Ford and Chrysler grew to unprecedented levels. With the understanding that winning races equated to sales both camps turned exotic experimentations in speed and aerodynamics. While Dodge fired the first shot with its Charger 500 Holman & Moody responded on Ford's behalf with the Torino Talladega – a car that claimed the 1969 Daytona 500. By the next time the series visited Atlanta Motor Speedway Mercury had rolled out its own version of the Talladega which they called the Cyclone Spoiler II. The new Ford designs certainly intensified the rivalry but it was the introduction of the Boss 429 that really forced the Mopar camp to step up. Their response? A mid-season knockout known as the Dodge Charger Daytona. Despite an impressive Mopar showing David Pearson managed to lock up a second consecutive Grand National Championship keeping Ford on top for the time being. Meanwhile back in Dearborn Larry Shinoda and company were busy designing an all-new aero warrior for the 1970 season. This one followed Mopar's sloped-nose vision but applied it to the new longer wider and sleeker Fairlane which in turn became the King Cobra. Powered by a 700hp variant of the Boss 429 the car showed promise during testing and by all accounts was poised to be a serious threat on the track. Unfortunately the King Cobra's demise was already on the horizon. The car's main supporter former Ford president Bunkie Knudsen was fired and replaced by Lee Iacocca who wasted no time in slashing Ford's racing budget by 75 percent. Whatever remaining chance of survival the King Cobra had was reduced to zero by new NASCAR regulation designed to minimize the aero cars and even the overall playing field.
