The First Car in Canton?
As written by Terry’s son Art Robinson who has done extensive ancestry research

The story in Terry Robinson’s family was that his Grandfather
Thomas had the first car in Canton,
NY way back when horses did most
of the work. We found this photo of
Terry’s grandfather Thomas Robinson and his bride Hazel on their wedding day in October 1915.
The family always said that
the first car they had was an Overland model. And checking the “1914
Directory of Automobiles in New York
State”, we find that the Robinsons of
Canton owned a Willys. Looking at
the wedding photo, this car appears
to be that very car—a Willys Overland model of probably 1914. The
features of the car match photos of
1914 Willys Overland models that we
found on the internet.
So this was the car that
the family always said was the first
George Brown’s corvette in the

car in Canton—we aren’t really sure
if it was the very first, but it must
have been one of the first.
Samuel and Sarah Robinson
and their sons Thomas and George
lived about three quarter of a mile out
of Canton going toward Pierrepont,
on the old Festus Tracy farm. This
historic land was the first farm land
chosen by Tracy when he came and
surveyed the area in 1799. Festus
Tracy picked this farmland for his
own, and then later returned from
Vermont and built a home on this
land. It remained in his family for
years and then later in 1898 the Robinsons bought it. In the 1960s, St.
Lawrence University acquired the
farm and has used it ever since for
educational programs, including
training students on the environment
and agricultural skills.

Why are you a member?
Seaway Cruisers
Classic Car Club, Inc.
~ Established 1986 ~
Last month I introduced myself by answering the question, “Why am I a
member?” Before I go on I should probably tell you that I ask a lot of
questions – of everyone, including myself.
And usually the answer to one
question generates more questions. (There, now you have been duly warned.)
As I wrote my piece for my first issue as newsletter editor I recalled the trepidation
I experienced filling out that first membership form. “Can I really be a member if I
do not own a classic car?” I do not know how to work on them, I do not know
every make and model, I do not know the terminology, my doubts rambled on. So
after getting my first issue out, I did some internet research on why people
partake in the classic car hobby. (Or is it a sport? See what I mean? Questions,
questions, questions.)
How do clubs define potential members? Is ownership generally a requirement?
Some clubs require ownership of a vehicle of a particular age and
sometimes a particular kind also. Many other clubs, like the Seaway
Cruisers, only require an interest in old vehicles.
Some clubs state that, either on its own or in addition to the above
requirement, the member must promote the interests and activities of
the club.
Annual dues, naturally, are one consistent requirement of members
of classic car clubs.
From some of the reading I did while surfing, my next question became, “What
are the different ways enthusiasts derive pleasure from ownership of a classic
car?”

Now I ask — why are you a member? When and why did you join the Seaway
Cruisers? What are the aspects of membership that bring you the most pleasure?
If you own a classic vehicle, how do you derive pleasure from that ownership?
