Congratulations to the following students for being selected for the Ohio Music Education Association District I Honor Band~ Tristen Turkopp (8, Bassoon), Matt Coate (7, Bassoon), Hannah Eggenschwiler (7, Clarinet), Meg Galambos (8, Clarinet), Mira Smith (7, French Horn), Audrey Miller (7, French Horn), and Alex Snyder (8, Trombone). The performance is Sunday, February 14 at 2:30pm, at the Stranahan Theater. The concert is free to the public. This group requires a taped audition and includes the best of the best JH band kids in Northwest Ohio! This is the largest number of Timberstone band members selected to participate in this ensemble in 10 years! March 17 is the Timberstone Band Spring Recital. This performance is the first of its type for Timberstone and the kids are very excited to perform in this new way! More information will be sent home soon. However, each grade level will be performing in a different format from the traditional ensemble setting. Band Members are working in by sections and smaller groups. You'll be able to hear Brass, Percussion, and Woodwind choirs, individual section pieces (ex. Trumpets, Clarinets, ex), and several smaller ensembles with mixed instrumentation. This format exposes band members to a new world of chamber music and allows them to work in smaller groups of their choosing. This recital meets the spring performance requirement of the class and all students are expected to be there. Saturday, March 19 is the OMEA Solo & Ensemble East Contest. This year, the event is being held at Southview High School. This event is optional for all 7/8 grade piano, band, choir, and orchestra students. We are very excited that it's so close to home and hope to have a huge turnout. Permission slips have been sent home, if you have questions about this event, please contact your musician's director. Orchestra News . . . . . The Winter Concert for the 6th-8th grade Orchestras will be on Wednesday, February 24th at Southview's Theater of Performing Arts at 7:00pm. Congratulations to the following students who were accepted into the District 1 Honors Orchestra: Nirmiti Shaw, Kenny Zhang, Sophia Chan, Benny Golding, Annika Smith, Phoebe Zhu, Knick Laux, Jaron Simon, and Owen Robinson. The concert will be held on Sunday, February 14th at 2:30pm at the Stranahan Theater. Student Absence Homework Acquisition Policy We would like to take this timely opportunity to review the homework acquisition policy for you to follow should your child become ill and not able to attend school. • On each day of your child’s illness, call the school office to report your child will not be in attendance (419-824-8680). • On the first two days of your child’s illness, check the homework matrix to access each class’ homework. Almost all textbooks are online, but you are also welcome to come to school and get your child’s textbooks from his/her locker so he/she can complete assignments. Grade Cards/Interim Reports Please be advised that we will not be printing grade cards this year. Grades are fully accessible on PowerSchool throughout the year for both parents and students. You can view the 2nd Quarter report cards on PowerSchool, as well as current grades for 3rd Quarter. If you are having trouble accessing PowerSchool please contact your child’s School Counselor at: 419-824-8680. • On the third morning of your child’s illness, when you call to report the absence, you may request that any worksheets and missed assignments be gathered from your child’s teachers to be picked up in the office at the end of that day. • The standard policy per teacher is that your child will have the same number of days to turn in missed work as the number of days he or she was absent. Please follow the above procedure when your child is absent instead of sending a friend or sibling to a teacher in search of homework. If, on the third day, you have called in a request for homework, please be sure to arrange for the homework to be picked up from the office at the end of that day. A student may collect the work from the office before he/she catches the bus or, if you are here by 4:00 pm, the front door will be unlocked and you may go directly to the office to get the work. If you cannot be here by 4:00, call the office before you come. Mr. Bader or Mr. Malolepszy are usually here after 4:00 pm and can let you in if they know you are coming. If for any reason your child is having a difficult time completing missed work, please call the counselors. We sincerely hope your family will remain healthy throughout the remaining winter months. Pastries with Parents Friday, February 12 You are invited to “Pastries with Parents” on Friday, February 12 beginning at 7:30 a.m. to join your child for breakfast on this day. For many of you who are unfamiliar with Pastries with Parents, this is simply an informal opportunity to have breakfast with your child. There will be no meeting, just time to spend with your child. The breakfast will take place in the cafeteria where we will be serving juice, coffee, bagels, and donuts. It will last until 8:00 a.m. We look forward to seeing you on the 12th! ATTENTION: 8th grade Parents This year at Southview, we would like to invite all the incoming 8th grade parents over to Southview to hear a presentation about freshmen scheduling, testing and transition. This meeting will be Monday, February 8th at 7:00 pm at Southview. The meeting at night is just for parents as we will be basically presenting the same information to the students during the day! In addition, we are going to be coming to Timberstone during the day on Feb. 2nd, where we will do our pre-scheduling. Honor Roll Sundaes Students who made the Timberstone Honor Roll were treated to sundaes on Friday, January 15th. Members of the Timberstone Parent Organization helped us with the scooping honors. Students make the Honor Roll by achieving at least a 3.5 average or above. A list of the Honor Roll students is contained in this Newsletter. 6th and 7th Graders Scheduling for the 2016-2017 School Year Timberstone School Counselors will meet with students in February to begin the registration process for next school year. The 7th grade class will meet with the counselors on Monday, February 8th and the 6th grade class Friday, February 12th. We are utilizing an online recommendation and request system again this year. Teachers will be making recommendations for each student, and then students will be able to see the recommendations as they make their requests for electives. We will send home a print out that parents or guardians will need to sign and return to your student’s Science teacher. The 7th graders form needs to be returned by Thursday, Feb. 11th and the 6th graders from are due Tuesday, Feb. 16th. Student elective choices will be able to be altered if necessary by following the directions on the form. We also held our first Box Top Collection day, and brought in 926 box tops for a total of $92.60. We voted on our favorite Box Top A+ collection box designs--Mrs. Brenner’s A+ and Mrs. Clark’s A+ were the chosen favorites and got a yummy treat. Finally we held two Spirit Day Fridays and encouraged all students/staff to wear their favorite Timberstone gear for one, and their favorite Sports Jersey for the other! Student Council also held its second Box Top Collection Day. We brought in a total of 1375 box tops, for a total of $137.50. After averaging the two collections together we discovered that Mrs. Pilewski’s A+, Mrs. Clark’s A+, and Mrs. Gladieux’s A+ brought in the most box tops for each grade. They got a special ice cream treat for their participation. Finally we held a Spirit Day Friday and encouraged all students/staff to wear their favorite ugly holiday sweater! We have had a terrific start to the second half of the school year with your students. During second semester your students will be faced with State Tests and End of Year Assessments. These tests can put a lot of pressure and anxiety on your students. Please let us know if your student is experiencing any difficulties with test taking and if we can assist them in any way. This month, we plan to integrate social development into the classroom by helping your students to further recognize how everyone’s differences and experiences make them a valuable person to our school. Skills in social development will positively affect your student’s academic success as they learn to communicate effectively and work together. We are eager to continue meeting and working with your students.
