10th Annual National Juried Exhibition, Saks Galleries, Denver, Colorado
The 10th Annual National Juried Exhibition was a great success at Saks Galleries in
Denver last October. Mikkel, and Catherine Saks, were perfect hosts along with their
staff, dejon and Karen. What a fabulous job hanging the 200 works and promoting
many sales of members’ work. Saks also organized a fundraiser from the sales of the
miniature works benefitting Foodbank of the Rockies in a second private reception.
We were honored to have Quang Ho judge the show, as he did a
spectacular job choosing the best of the best. It was not an easy
task as the quality of work was very high and the competition
tough. Congratulations to all award recipients (see page 2-4).
These opening reception was very well attended by AIS members
across the country.
Quang was also very generous with his painting demonstration
the following day. The large room was packed with artists watching this master at work. Quang’s new instructional DVD was introduced to the crowd (see page 5).
Quang Ho, AISM, Judge The AIS Masters’ workshops were filled and Colorado provided perfect weather for the painters amongst the picturesque Rocky Mountains. October in Colorado is beautiful! AIS members had a
wonderful time painting in Scott Christensen’s workshop in Evergreen, and at Carolyn
Anderson’s workshop in Denver. They are both excellent instructors and artists and
AIS is proud to have hosted their workshops (see more on page 6). We appreciate Scott
and Carolyn’s participation and couldn’t have done it without our Vice President, Mary
Garrish, AIS, and Charlie Bogusz organizing the events.
With every show, AIS enjoys new membership from the area. Denver is certainly rich
with fabulous impressionist painters and is home to one of the finest art galleries
- Saks Galleries. We welcome all the many new Colorado members and look forward
to your entries in this years show and years to follow.
Our warmest thank yous go to Mikkel and Catherine Saks, dejon and Karen at Saks
Galleries for being fabulous to work with and doing such a great job presenting and
selling the work. More thank yous to all our volunteers on the shipping committee:

Best of Show “Morning Ensigns, Italy,” by Mitch Baird
Mitch Baird was born in 1972 and grew up
in the Pacific Northwest. At an early age he
displayed talent in drawing and painting
and with the encouragement of his parents
developed a love for art. His true passion for
painting matured while pursuing his BFA at
Brigham Young University. It was here that
he studied under the great draftsman Ralph
Barksdale, whose inspiration and wisdom
quickened his abilities, knowledge and desire.

willingness to share the mysteries and insights into design, drawing and painting
that opened my eyes and mind. I will forever be indebted to him.”

Mitch believes that painting is a celebration of life and the beauty that surrounds
us. He is devoted to the traditions of the late 19th century artists who looked to
the figure and nature for inspiration regarding light, color, and design. Seeking
out this inspiration, Mitch works directly from life to capture the qualities and nuances of natural light and color harmony. He has a strong conviction that great
artistic communication depends on good draftsmanship, design and vision. His
artistic desire is to “portray a positive visual statement and hope the viewer will
experience what I see and in some sense be inspired, uplifted, or moved by my
painting, whether it is of a small intimate setting or a grandiose subject.”
Mitch resides with his wife Emily and daughter Siena in the ‘Great Northwest’ near
Portland, Oregon. Mitch has established himself as a gifted painter and is leaving
his mark in the art world. His national recognition continues to grow

9 -4 Monday - Thursday, and 9 - 1 Friday.

On Monday morning, C.W. Mundy will open
the workshop with a slide presentation and
lecture, “The Seven Foundational Truths .“
On Monday afternoon, students will observe a still life demonstration.
The class will begin painting Tuesday morning. C.W. will offer each artist individual
personal attention and critique.

The subject will be the costumed figure but the focus
will be the fundamentals of
drawing, design, value and
color. Peggi’s approach is to
break down these tools into “one idea at a
time” exercises. This helps the student to

all that goes into
making a painting.

painting with these
tools Peggi hopes
to help the student
“say it in their own
voice” while getting a good start and maintaining a solid
foundation. There will be many starts to
