Our luxury mobile camps are tailored to the needs of the individual clients that stay there, so as to ensure the privacy and comfort that a safari of distinction demands, whilst allowing the interaction with nature that only camping can indulge. Our spacious walk-in tents are of the traditional, time-honoured safari style, with sewn-in floors and windows, large wooden beds, comfortable mattresses and fresh cotton bedding, soothed by African breezes that circulate freely through the shade-cloth windows. The ensuite bathrooms include a toilet and shower, filled by your personal camp attendant, according to your needs and fully enclosed to keep unwanted visitors away. Each tent is individually pitched on our own private campsites, and appointed to face the unfurling majesty of the African bush so that even when sat on your veranda, cold drink in hand, your affinity to the surrounding environment is one of intimacy and solitude. Our canvas luxury is enhanced by a dedicated safari crew, intent on making your overnight stay as memorable and superlative as possible. Our well trained chefs rustle up the finest in bush cuisine, serving up multi-course meals to the dining tent, complemented by a selection of fine wines, ice-cold drinks and spirits brought to you by the ever attentive waiters. L U X U RY M O B I L E C A M P I N G Ultimately, the advantage of our luxury camps is the mobility, the freedom to go into remote areas of the bush, well away from the beaten tracks of the main tourist circuit. Safari Legacy carefully choose the optimum sites for their luxury camps, locating game routes and migration corridors that will provide the perfect proximity to the wildlife that is, after all, the main reason for your visit. Silver service dinners, served by courteous waiters traditionally dressed in the Swahili kanzu and fez, beneath the glistening brilliance of the African night sky is perhaps the very epitome of safari style, experienced only by a privileged few since the earliest explorers. The evening unwinds around the campfire, during which you might learn about Maasai culture from a local elder, discuss the arrangements for the following day with your guide or simply soak up the noctural orchestra that pervades the surrounding bush. As you retire to your spacious tents, gently lit by the dancing flicker of lantern-light, the drama of the African plains continues around you, the chorus of wildlife providing a memorable reminder of your whereabouts. When we plan the safari with you, we seek an indication as to your interests so that we can better mould your safari around your wishes and tailor-make your personal itinerary according to your desires. Mobile luxury camps allow us the independence to better correspond your hopes with our safari operation and take you to the places that you want to go, to see the wildlife that you want to see. If it is Africa you seek, then there is no surer way to find it. 3ERENGETI.ATIONAL0ARK TANZANIA’S NATIONAL PARKS Tanzania dedicates more of its landmass to conservation than any other country in Africa. An impressive 25 per cent of the country is protected as National Park, Game Reserve or Game Controlled Area providing refuge for some of the largest, wildest and most concentrated population of wildlife on the planet. Safari Legacy operate throughout these areas, and in a few secluded game areas of their own, but the more legendary National Parks include: Arguably the most famous National Park in the world, the vast predator-rich Serengeti National Park needs little introduction. This primeval paradise of roughly the size of Northern Ireland or Connecticut has been the subject of countless wildlife films, each seeking to capture the unique spirit of this exhilarating ecosystem that was, until recently, the domain of a favoured few. The unfurling plains of Seronera provide the stage for the most dramatic wildlife spectacle on the planet when the massed herds of a million wildebeest congregate on the short-grass plains for The Great Migration north to the Masai Mara. The gently undulating hills of Lobo stretch up to the Kenyan border, an idyllic landscape, dotted with kopjes and shady arbours, in which we track the resident wildlife. Heading west, we reach the croc infested waters of Grumeti River, the dramatic crossing point where thousands of wildebeest fall prey to the waiting predators as they cross the river en route to the dry season grassy plains of the Mara. Safari Legacy strategically pitch their mobile luxury camps across this rich and prolific biosphere, to offer you a privileged intimacy with the wildlife and a front seat view of the constantly evolving ecosystem. We trail the route of the Migration, bringing you closer to the awesome, natural theatre that unfolds in season with thrilling intensity, starting from the calving grounds of Naabi before leading you out to Kirawira and the deathdefying crossing of the Grumeti. And as if the wildlife were not reason enough for a visit, then the chance to drift effortlessly above the action in a hot air balloon, decipher remote Maasai cave paintings or uncover the past at Olduvai Gorge, the prehistoric resting place of some of our earliest predecessors, are worthy of further scrutiny. We are proud to say that the Serengeti is everything that the discerning safari-seeker would expect - and more - and we believe that a few nights in a luxury mobile camp come closer than any other way to doing it the justice it deserves. .GORONGORO#RATER The huge tuskers of the yellow barked acacia forest, the regal black-maned lions that stalk the plains, the clustered hippos of the swamp allow a proximity that is not encountered elsewhere in the safari lands of Tanzania. A day’s drive might take you from flamingo-swathed soda lakes to open savannah. Ngorongoro is perhaps the finest, and without a doubt the most impressive, wildlife destination on the planet. A perfectly-formed sunken volcano that hosts as wide a cross-section of wildlife as is found on the continent of Africa, including the rare Black Rhino. A game drive around this perfect natural amphitheatre, bounded by towering 2,000ft sheer walls, allows a rare intimacy with the resident wildlife that roam the definitive range of ecosystems. The volcanic highlands that surround the Crater lope gently away into Maasailand, swellings of barely accessible crater and volcanos carved by N’Gai, the Maasai God, who is believed to live in the active Ol Donyo Lengai volcano. Any area good enough for a God is worthy of further exploration, and with this in mind, we at Safari Legacy have compiled a series of itineraries that delve into this divinely approved paradise. From our private camps or selected lodges on the crater rim, we root out the elusive and the more visible inhabitants of this earthly Eden, hoping to catch the Big Five in a single day’s drive in Ngorongoro Crater. For the more adventurous, a drive or walk into the Ngorongoro Highlands, to the verdant, tree-brushed slopes of Empakai, or the distant Lake Eyasi, home of the elusive Hadzabe people, are all highly recommended. “Part of what made our experience so pleasant, once we arrived in Tanzania, was that the tour company seemed very organized, attentive to our needs and was sincere about our vacation being the best it could be. We felt the same way about our guide. We feel so fortunate to have experienced all we did and did so in a safe and comfortable environment. I’ve done nothing but praise everyone involved when talking to my family, friends and co-workers about our trip.” - Beth Averbeck, client ,AKE-ANYARA.ATIONAL0ARK The eponymous lake is a shallow alkaline lake, one of the many that bejewel the Lake Manyara is an unexpected oasis of tropical ground water forest, nestled deep at the foot of the western escarpment, that looms over the Great African Rift Valley from the Red Sea to Mozambique. Rift Valley, supporting cast flocks of flamingo that daub pink swathes across the African horizon at sunset. The thick clumps of rainforest that border the lake harbour an exotic kaleidoscope of birds and monkeys, the dense canopy alive with the chatter and squawks of the tropical menagerie. On the forest floor, lumbering groups of elephant browse on the dense foliage and buffalo snort warily at the shadows sending lions clambering up trees in search of sanctuary and the dark giraffes loping into the clearings. Meanwhile on the flood plains that fringe the lake, hulking hippo return to the safety of their grunting pool after a night satisfying their huge appetites, whilst darting impala skit nervously and gracefully around the acacia woodland. Perhaps unsurprisingly, writers as diverse as Ian Douglas-Hamilton and Ernest Hemingway, have found inspiration in the lush foliage of this game-filled sanctuary and we at Safari Legacy have honoured their revelations with safari programmes that immerse our clients in this UNESCO biosphere. Pitching our camps deep inside the park or using an impressively-appointed lodge perched on the escarpment as our base, we explore the undergrowth in search of the vast array of birds and mammals that inhabit this small, impressive National Park, perhaps finishing our day with sundowners at the hippo pool. Lake Manyara will come as a welcome surprise for those who expect their game viewing to take place in the open savannah plains, its humid forest, bubbling hotsprings and chattering canopy bearing witness to Tanzania’s role as the most varied safari destination in Africa. 4ARANGIRE.ATIONAL0ARK The open plains, acacia parkland, riverine parkland, miombo and swamps each host a unique wealth of mammals and birds, including comparative rarities to the Northern Circuit such as fringe-eared oryx, gerenuk and African wild dogs. Furthermore, Tarangire is a birder’s paradise, Tarangire National Park is Africa at its most classic - idolised in Hollywood movies, romanticised by early settlers and sought ever since by the modern traveller. Open savannah, looming primeval baobab trees and stretched groves of acacia tortellis compete with roaming herds of populous elephant, nervous clutches of skittish zebra and an impressive array of predators to provide the very definition of the African bush. In the dry season, the permanent waters of the Tarangire River lure animals from across the game lands of Northern Tanzania, swelling numbers to levels second only to Ngorongoro in their concentration. hosting more breeding species than any other habitat in the world. Prolific birds, wandering Maasai and a terrain that offers sanctuary to myriads of both large and smaller game make Tarangire one of the most enchanting National Parks in East Africa From our own luxury permanent camp at Kikoti on the eastern border of the Park, Safari Legacy have developed a diverse selection of itineraries, each one introducing the client to this beautiful and unproclaimed National Park. It might be a nature walk or foot safari with one of our Maasai guides, a full day game-driving in the savannah and swamps of Tarangire National Park or a visit to a nearby Maasai homestead, partners in our Kikoti project. Its size and location away from the main safari circuits have meant that Ruaha has not gained the notoriety of its more celebrated peers, but amongst the repeat visitors to Tanzania, Ruaha enjoys a reputation as the best kept secret in East Africa. During the dry season, from July to November, there is a concentration of game along the river, with herds of elephant, giraffe, buffalo, impala and numerous greater kudu. Three main areas has so far been opened up for game viewing, the spectacular Ruaha River drive of great scenic beauty where greater kudu are common and tame, the Mdonya woodlands circuit where sable, roan antelope and Liechtenstein’s hartebeest may be encountered, and the Mbage - Mwagusi track for elephants. 3ELOUS'AME2ESERVE This pocket of Tanzania is steeped in history, from the wreck of the Konigsberg destroyer sunk in the Rufiji River to the remnants of the slave caravans that dragged their tragic cargo through Selous, but today the Game Reserve is rapidly gaining repute amongst the more discerning safari-hands keen to find solitude in the wilds of Africa. Perhaps the last true wilderness of Africa, Selous is an unbounded expanse of bush, roughly equivalent to the size of Switzerland. Named after Frederick Selous, the naturalist, hunter and explorer, who once roamed these parts with his Presidential clients, he was eventually to meet his death in a World War I skirmish, buried where he fell at Beho-Beho deep in the area that now bears his name. Selous is bisected by the Rufiji River, the main artery and life blood of the entire ecosystem, that flows through the reserve and provides the focal point of much of our game-viewing whilst there. One of the principal attractions of a visit to this vast wilderness is the option to include boat safaris and foot safaris, in addition to the classic game drives that constitute much of a safari. Meandering along the river in a covered boat, avoiding the pods of hippo and crocodiles that launch into the water at our approach, adds a new and very exciting dimension to your Tanzanian safari, memories of The African Queen difficult to resist as we drift along the river. TA N Z A N I A ’ S N AT I O N A L PA R K S -AHALE.ATIONAL0ARK Mahale Mountains National Park is a unique safari destination, set apart from all other Tanzanian alternatives in character, location and style. This isolated safari destination on the Western boundaries provides unparalleled opportunities to witness wild groups of habituated and unhabituated chimpanzees in an exceptional natural environment. This vast stretch of tropical forested National Park meets the lapping fresh waters of Lake Tanganyika along a pale sandy shore. Here visitors can combine an unusual and intense safari experience with an exceptional beach holiday on the banks of the world’s longest freshwater lake, snorkelling and fishing and then setting off into the forest to follow the trail of our primeval ancestors. EXPLORING MAHALE The sun rises over the lake and sets behind the steep rise of mountains, extending up to 2,462m at Nkungwe Peak, and, as there are no roads in the park, all the trails that lead through its glades and distances are only open to those who will walk them. Numerous pathways and tracks allow us to enjoy truly beautiful forest walks and chance an encounter with some of the many different inhabitants of the lowland forests and higher brachystesia woodlands and savannahs. Hundreds of coloured butterflies (over 30 species) and forest birds dart across the sun lit paths, and the odd otter may be met near the lake. MAHALE’S WILDLIFE The paths are also foraged by wart hog and bush pig, and while elephant, buffalo, yellow baboons and monkeys favour the cover of the northern regions, the lower, southern reaches are the terrain of rare roan and sable antelope, kudu and eland in the shadow of leopard and lion. The trees are the merry domain of giant squirrels and red-legged squirrels, and excitable troops of vervet, red colobus and white spot nose monkeys, as well as potentially a new subspecies of Angolan black and white colobus monkey found on Mt Nkungwe. OBSERVING MAHALE’S CHIMPS The best place in the world to see chimpanzees in the wild can be found here. From our spectacular lodge at lakes edge, we hike in the forest to observe chimps as they play, groom and forage. Their trails can be tracked, by our expert guides and trackers. There are also opportunities for swimming in Lake Tanganyika or butterfly watching. +ILIMANJARO “First of all....we will never be the same, we will never look upon on our daily lives with the same eyes. Calling this the “trip of a lifetime” would be an understatement Kilimanjaro defines East Africa as surely as any other sight in this land of hyperbole and natural wonder. The highest mountain in Africa, the highest free-standing mountain in the world, the distinctive snowcapped peak looms up from the surrounding Masai Steppe to dominate the skyline and sweeping vistas of Northern Tanzania. ... the animals were amazing, the accommodations were both exotic and luxurious and the food was superb, but this would not really tell the story. The reason our lives have ‘changed’ is because of the people and most of all because of our guides. In both Tanzania and Kenya our guides were wonderful. They made the trip special...they are all an asset to your company.” - Wendy Waltz & Tim McBeth, USA Alluringly, Kilimanjaro is as high as the untrained walker can go without need of oxygen or specialist mountaineering skills, and is proving an irresistible lure to adventure seekers across the world, keen to experience a major peak once in their lifetime. Safari Legacy has compiled a series of itineraries that we hope will take the interested client to the summit of this world-famous mountain. We principally use the Machame Route, seeking to avoid the well-beaten trails of Marangu, providing trained guides, cooks, porters, high-altitude camping equipment and all the necessary background information to ensure a safe and comfortable climb. Each day’s climb is designed to gently gain altitude, moving slowly through each stage of vegetation so that acclimatisation is assured but not at the expense of the unique ecosystem and breathtaking views that embellish every step of your climb. Furthermore, for those limited in time or fitness, we offer options for shorter hikes in the foothills of Kilimanjaro, trekking the rainforests that cover the lower slope in search of monkeys, smaller antelopes and tropical birds.
