The Trumpeter - Augustana Lutheran Church
The Trumpeter
Augustana Lutheran Church, Sioux City, Iowa
From the Pastor
I attended the Fall Rostered Leaders’ Convocation at Lutheran Lakeside Camp September 27-29.
It was great to reconnect with colleagues and
friends from across the Synod. The setting was
beautiful and it was fun to see the nearlycompleted Welcome Center and Shalom House Retreat Center.
The Rev. Dr. Craig Nessan was our speaker. Dr. Nessan is Academic Dean and Professor of Contextual Theology at Wartburg
Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa.
In one of his lectures, Dr. Nessan proposed the idea that for
the sake of the church we need to see the death of evangelism. I
admit to being rather shocked at that one! He suggests that evangelizing would take its place.
What’s the difference? Evangelism is a special activity of the
church often done by the pastor or a committee (in our case, mission team). It is primarily about publicity. It tends to be episodic.
Evangelizing is verbal communication about the living Jesus Christ
and the active sharing of that message. Evangelizing is done by
everyone in all kinds of settings. Evangelizing is also a way of living that involves not only talking about Jesus, but acting in a Christian manner. We do this as we live out the two Great Commandments: “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and
with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and
first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your
neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the
law and the prophets.” (Matthew 22:37-40) Evangelizing people
live out the Gospel in their everyday lives, not simply by going to
church on a Sunday morning. Dr. Nessan also says that evangelizing is not inviting someone to church; it’s telling and living the story
so that others will ask about where you attend and how they might
visit here. Evangelical speaking and living is are important components of evangelizing, but evangelical listening is also very important to relationship building. Be watchful for more information on
this as the Evangelism Mission Team works on rediscovering its
purpose.
The most important message the Church has to share is
that the Word of Christ is a means of grace for the life of the
world. With so many voices claiming to have the “Christian”
answers to the world’s problems, we need to tell the story of God’s
love, kindness, and mercy.
Blessings to you as you evangelize. Trust that the Holy
Spirit will give you the words to say and the ears to listen.

The Augustana CROP Walk Team
is
helping to end hunger one step at a time by
participating in this year's Sioux City CROP
Hunger Walk. The money raised helps fight
hunger both right here in Siouxland and
around the world.
Last year, 15 members of Augustana (and
one dog) had a great time walking in the 2014
Sioux City CROP Walk. In total, the team collected $927! Can we get an even bigger team
this year and raise even more money???
If you are interested in joining the Augustana team you can collect donations both in person, online or both!! Or if you aren’t able to
walk, you can make an online donation as
well! Visit http://hunger.cwsglobal.org/goto/
augustanasiouxcity to donate or to join the
Augustana team! It’s as simple as clicking
“donate now” or “join team.”
This year’s walk is Sunday, October 18th
with registration beginning at 1 p.m. The walk
route is 3 miles and usually takes a little over
an hour, depending how fast you walk.
If you are interested in either walking or
donating contact Shelley Hexom at (712) 2397156 or [email protected] or any of the
other Augustana walkers. Each Sunday between now and the walk, Shelley and her
helpers will be available in the back after
church on Sunday to collect donations and/or
hand out pledge sheets
for
those
walking!
Please support us by
making a donation...and
join us on the Walk!
Food Bank of Siouxland Backpack
Program
This will make the fourth
year we are participating in
the “backpack” program by
assisting at the Food Bank
of Siouxland. Our first time
this year is Wednesday,
October 7. Please check
your calendars to see if you
can help. Each time we need twelve workers.
Our other dates are Wednesday, November
11, Wednesday, January 27, 2016, and
Wednesday, April 6, 2016. This is a great opportunity for confirmands to fulfill a “Service
with a Smile” (SWAS) requirement.
Augustana Lutheran Youth
Organization (ALYO)
Military Bible Sticks
October and November events for ALYO
include:
CROP Walk on Sunday, October 18. Please let
Shelley Hexom know if you are planning to walk.
The annual Syrian/Lebanese Dinner at St. Thomas
Orthodox Church at 1100 Jones Street is on October
25. $12 for adults and $6 for children. They serve from
noon-5:00 PM. It would be fun to go as a group. Let’s
meet there around noon. Fr. Lucas said he will give
tours if we like.
The annual Halloween party will be at 4:00 PM on
October 25. We can start decorating and setting
up right after church, run over to St. Thomas for lunch,
and come back to finish.
The annual Greek Dinner at Holy Trinity Orthodox
Church at 900 6th Street is November 1. We would
walk over right after church. The website says the
adult tickets are $10, but I think they, too, have raised
them to $12. I don’t know about the children’s prices.
Fr. Dimitri gives tours of this church.
New and Returning Members
On September 27, 2015 we welcomed these new
and returning members to Augustana Lutheran
Church:
Bob & Jenny Stewart (and Charlie)
Since 2012 we have donated money
to the Faith Comes by Hearing organization by sponsoring Bible Sticks for military
personnel. This items include the entire
New Testament, are small and easy to
carry, utilize low light for safety in the field,
and easily fit in the soldiers’ pockets. Our
donations also include an offer for the soldiers to give their family at home free Bible
sticks. More than 500,000 have been donated to active-duty military personnel
since the company started making them!
Scott Plambeck has found his Bible Stick
to be very comforting when he has been
deployed to the Middle East.
A donation of $25 sponsors one
solider and his/her family. Last year we
donated $505 to this cause. In
honor of Veterans Day on November 11, we will be collecting money for the Bible Sticks
on Sunday, October 11 and
Sunday, October 18. Thank
you for your participation.
“God’s Work. Our Hands.” Sunday
Over 30 residents at Century II Apartments attended the potluck dinner we
served at their place on Sunday, September 27. Those of us who were there setting up, serving, eating with the residents,
and cleaning up felt the appreciation and
saw it in the smiles and the enthusiastic
thanks that day.
Thank you to all who volunteered to
make this gift to our neighbors such a blessing.
Fall Back
Daylight Saving Time changes on November 1. We gain an hour of sleep! Don’t
forget to change your clocks back an hour
before going to sleep on Saturday, October 31.

The INTERFAITH FOOD
FESTIVAL will be held Sunday, October 11th at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 1112
8th Street from 12 noon until 2
p.m. Augustana Lutheran will
again be selling rye bread. We
are grateful to Jeff Levine for his
generous gift of time and labor to
prepare the bread (if anyone
would like to help him, please
call Jeff at 494-3498 or Linda at
258-5220). The Food Festival is
an annual fund raiser event to
help Siouxlanders who are struggling to feed their families, pay
utility bills, assist with children’s
needs, and prescriptions; it is
also a great event for good food
and fellowship. Each participating church serves their specialty.
We also need participants to buy
tickets, support and enjoy the
festival. Tickets will be available
on Sunday, October 4th from
Nancy or Linda, and also at the
door the day of the festival. Tickets are $6.00 and each have 18
punches, to spend at various
booths.
Interfaith is also collecting empty
pill bottles. There is a box to collect them on the table downstairs. This is for an African Mission.
Worship assistants,
you are responsible for serving on the day they are scheduled. If you are unable
to serve on a date scheduled, please arrange for a substitute and notify the office so the correct
names may be entered in the bulletin.

Stewardship Corner
Reformation Sunday, October 25
“We give thee but thine own,
whate'er the gift may be;
all that we have is thine alone,
a trust, O Lord, from thee.”*
These lyrics to ELW Hymn 686, contain oldfashioned words, but the message is clear: everything we say we have actually comes as a gift from
God. We are put “in trust” of those gifts. Another way
to say that is that we are stewards or caretakers of
those gifts.
The confirmation students learn that stewardship
involves much more than how much money we give
to the church. Stewardship is about taking care of
things that God has given to us to manage. This is a
huge task because it includes taking care of the earth
and sharing with our neighbor in love. All too many
people are more concerned about their own fear of
scarcity, that they fail to realize God has given them
much more than they need. Stewardship also includes the money and time that we give to the church
as we give back to God a portion of what God has
first given us.
God, help us to give with joy from the abundance
of your grace. Amen
On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed a list
of 95 items to be debated on the door of the church
at Wittenberg, Germany. His intent was to reform
his church—the Roman Catholic Church. But the
Church was not ready for the reforms Luther had in
mind and the foundations of today’s Lutheran
Church were laid.
We will gather for Holy Communion worship at
8:00 and 10:15. We have two youth who will be confirmed, so we will observe with the Rite of Affirmation of Baptism at the late service on October 25.
