Editorial
LNG: well positioned in a
promising market
Dear readers,
It is no coincidence that the present
vc is concerned with the topic of
LNG: Liquefied Natural Gas is rapidly
developing into an important source
of energy for the future. At HEROSE,
production of the necessary valves
puts us right at the forefront of this
development. I am very pleased that
we have now been granted the first
important approvals.
However, I have positive reports from
other areas. In terms of sales, 2012
has got off to a great start – and I am
very optimistic for the rest of the year.
Internally, the extension of our new
administration building has priority for
HEROSE. The foundation stone for this
was laid at the beginning of February.
You are cordially invited to visit the new
building after its completion – which is
planned for September.
I wish you a successful spring.

Important certification for special HEROSE valves / A visit to the
Swedish LNG terminal in Nynäshamn on the Baltic
With the approval of a wide range
of valves for use in gas-fuelled ships
by the certification body Det Norske
Veritas (DNV – read more on page 3),
HEROSE has taken a decisive step in
the new and promising field of business
associated with LNG (Liquified Natural
Gas). HEROSE Manager Dirk Zschalich:
"We are confident that the other
certification bodies will follow suit and
then we will really be able to get going."
By 2016 not only Europe's inland
waterway ship owners will be forced
to convert their engines due to more
stringent exhaust gas regulations (vc
reported) – ship owners on the Baltic
are also faced with a similar situation.
As of 2015 the limiting value for sulphur
there will be 0.1 percent for ship fuels.
This will dramatically increase the
price of conventional fuels so that by
then at the latest, LNG will become an
attractive alternative. Zschalich: "We
are very well positioned to serve this
rapidly growing market."
In order to ensure the supply of LNG,
the corresponding import terminals
are planned on the Baltic. The first
terminal, in Nynäshamn, 60 kilometres
south of Stockholm, was designed and
constructed by the Linde subsidiary
Nynäshamn: piping wherever you look
Title Story
Discussion among experts: Terminal Manager Lars Laurell (centre) with HEROSE Sales Manager
Volker Maass (right) and Manfred Kadner, the Scandinavian HEROSE representative
In Nynäshamn, industry and idyllic Baltic scenery are very close neighbours
Cryo AB in Gothenburg. Cryo AB is
one of the world's leading suppliers
of everything associated with LNG:
construction of tanks and trailers as
well as the planning of LNG plants – and
is one of HEROSE's biggest customers
in Scandinavia. The project supervisor
in Nynäshamn was Lars Persson, who
now works as a manager for Cryo AB.
The fact that the order volume of the
Linde subsidiary has greatly increased
just recently is also shown by the
company's relocation to a much larger
administration building in Gothenburg.
The terminal, which will be inaugurated
in May 2011, will be operated by AGA –
a further Linde subsidiary. At present
the terminal will only be used to supply
customers on land, however fuelling of
2
LNG ships is also planned – as soon as
there are any.
The heart of the plant is a round concrete
tank with a diameter of almost 36 metres
and a similar height. "Here we can store
about 20,000 cubic metres of LNG",
says Lars Laurell, Terminal Manager in
Nynäshamn. This corresponds to about
twelve million cubic metres of gas, as
each cubic metre of liquid expands to
600 times its volume when it changes to
the gaseous state. Highly refrigerated at
minus 162 degrees Celsius, the liquefied
gas is transferred to road tankers and
brought directly to the customer or to
the connection point of an existing gas
network. There, it is carefully re-heated
in Linde regasification plants and then
distributed as natural gas.
Self-service filling in Nynäshamn: drivers of LNG fill the
The terminal operates completely
automatically and the tanker drivers fill
the LNG into their trailers themselves.
Many HEROSE valves were used in
the construction of the terminal. Sales
Manager Volker Maass: "Primarily these
were type 01841 and 01843 FireSafe
valves, both with and without actuators,
whose areas of application include the
landing area, the pipe network and the
regasification plant."
In the area around Stockholm,
transportation of liquid gas is not only
the most economical method – there
is also no competition, as there are no
appropriate pipelines. With regard to this,
Trond Jerve, LNG Manager from AGA,
stated in the Linde customer newsletter:
"In principle, transportation which is
independent of pipelines is becoming
increasingly important. Throughout the
world, more than ten percent of natural
gas is transported as LNG – and this
tendency is increasing."
Because of this, AGA has firm plans
for the construction of a second storage facility. "The terminal in Nynäshamn
will then be one of the Small Scale Terminals", says Jerve. Although at present
these smaller plants are still the outsiders among the 70 LNG terminals
throughout the world, however they have
the great advantage that they can be installed close to industrial areas or cities
– so that there is only a short distance to
the customers. For example, customers
of the AGA terminal in Nynäshamn include

approval
HEROSE has upgraded many of its
cryogenic valves for marine use.
Initially the following types have
been approved by Det Norske
Veritas:
trucks with liquid gas themselves
the neighbouring Nynas oil refinery. The
refinery needs hydrogen for the processing of mineral oil, and it now produces
this from natural gas instead of from
raw petrol. This conversion has enabled
a considerable reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. The utility company
Stockholm Gas, which is also involved
with the terminal, intends to save 50,000
tons per year. Taxis and buses in Stockholm use LNG from Nynäshamn.
Linde ensures its own LNG supply:
The liquefied natural gas mainly comes
from a modern and especially energyefficient natural gas liquefaction plant
in Stavanger in Norway, which the
Linde Engineering Division constructed
for Skangas AS. The plant has been in
operation since the end of 2010. From
there, LNG tankers such as the 'Coral
i
Methane' from the Dutch shipping
company Anthony Veder supply 7,500
cubic metres of gas to Nynäshamn
every three weeks. It is planned to double
this volume from 2013. "With this LNG
plant, which produces 300,000 tons per
year, we have further strengthened our
leading position for medium size LNG
production", says Linde Project Manager
Dr. Erich Ettinger.
With natural gas it is not only possible
to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide
by about 30 percent, in comparison with
petrol or oil the emission of pollutants
is also considerably lower. About 90
percent less sulphur and 80 percent less
nitrous oxides are produced during the
combustion of natural gas. As well as
this, no heavy metals or soot particles
are released.
The Baltic is especially threatened
The MARPOL 73/78 treaty which was
agreed in the context of the International
Marine Organisation (IMO) defines
certain sea areas as 'special areas' in
which, due to their oceanographic and
ecological nature, special regulations
are required to prevent pollution of the
environment and therefore they enjoy
an increased protective status. These
areas include the Baltic and parts of
the North Sea. Among other things,

emission limits and maximum sulphur
contents in fuel are defined for ports
and the sea. A schedule for the gradual
reduction of sulphur content has been
established. For example, since 1 July
2010, there is a limit of 1.0 percent and
from 2015 the limit will be 0.1 percent.
For EU ports, the EU has also defined a
limiting value for sulphur of 0.1 percent
for stays in port of over two hours as of
1 January 2015.

01641, 01741, 01841)
– Check valves (including 05417,
05717)
– Safety valves (including 06012,

–Gate valves (09340 and 09343)
This approval means that valves up
to and including nominal size DN100
are not subject to individual approval
and can leave our factory immediately
after standard inspection. Individual
approvals are only required for
nominal sizes larger than DN100.
HEROSE will extend this approval to
other classification societies such
as GL and BV in order to ensure
coverage of a wide range of offshore
applications.
i
What is the task of a
classification society?
A classification society is a body,
which functions as an assessor in
marine engineering and produces
technical guidelines for the design and
construction of ships.
These are then regarded as
building regulations, for example for
stress analyses in the design and
dimensioning of marine constructions.

Interview
"2012 will also be a good year for us!"
An optimistic vc interview with HEROSE Manager Dirk Zschalich
Anticipating the extension of the administration building in Bad Oldesloe:
HEROSE’s Manager Dirk Zschalich
Good sales, a positive outlook and
a very important new building, which
will be completed this year: three good
reasons for an interview with HEROSE
Manager Dirk Zschalich.
vc: Although a few weeks of the new
year have now passed, we would still
like to ask: What is in store for HEROSE
in 2012?
Dirk Zschalich: After many discussions
with our customers and sales partners
we expect a positive development in
business and further growth throughout
the world in the future. Against this
background I find it difficult to agree
with the increasing allegations of a
new economic crisis. The VDMA, the
Association of German Machinery and
Plant Manufacturers, forecasts a growth
rate of 4 percent. Personally, I believe
that considerably greater growth is
possible. Our sales during the first two
months confirm my opinion.
vc: What will be happening in Bad
Oldesloe during the coming months?
Zschalich: Many positive things.
First of all I would like to mention the
extension to our administration building.
This will almost triple our office area.
Construction started on 1. February and
the building is expected to be completed
in September. Red letter days in our
4
calendar are also the five days in June
on which once again the ACHEMA will
be held in Frankfurt. For us, this is the
most important valves exhibition in
Europe and an ideal platform for the
presentation of exciting innovations.
vc: Where do you see other main
emphases?
Zschalich: The global growth of the
market for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG )
is becoming increasingly interesting. At
present we are in the course of obtaining
further product approvals for the
offshore field, which is a prerequisite for
participation in this lucrative market. By
Xuianglu Meng and Bo Shi performing a tightness
test on the housing
the way, LNG is also the subject of our
present title story. Of course, we must
not forget the further internationalisation
of HEROSE. We will soon be establishing
a subsidiary in Spain, so that all
Spanish-speaking customers, including
those in South America, will have a
further contact partner. In China we have
started the assembly of stainless steel
manual shut-off valves for the Chinese
market. With this, we are killing three
birds with one stone: We can achieve
considerably shorter delivery times, we
can offer our Chinese customers trade in
their national currency Renminbi – and
we eliminate import duties as well as

it is very important that the very same
quality and testing standards as in
Germany apply to all products. We are
still setting up business in Dalian, a city
on the Yellow Sea, but we will address
all our Chinese customers in the course
of the year.
vc: Finally, a brief look back to last year:
How was 2011?
Zschalich: It was a record-breaking
year in the history of our company. We
achieved an increase in sales of 30
percent, although we only expected 10
percent at the beginning of the year. As
well as this, we were also able to take
on over 20 new employees. However,
these good results also had a negative
impact, which to some extent tried the
patience of our customers. Particularly
due to the exceedingly rapid growth
in the first six months of the year we
were close to our limits with regard to
materials and manpower. It took some
time to adapt our capacity and it took
until October before we were able to
achieve satisfactory values in terms of
deliveries and delivery dates. I would like
to take this opportunity to once again
express my thanks for the patience and
understanding of our customers.
From paperclips to forty kilogramme
cast housings, from valve springs to
workbenches: there is nothing which the
Purchasing department cannot obtain.
Friedhelm Papke-Piotrowski and his
team of four provide the company with
everything that it needs – with the main
emphasis on production. Friedhelm
Papke-Piotrowski: "In this area alone
we have a list of 8,000 common items."
HEROSE has long-term business
relations with 90 percent of the
suppliers. "Anyone who wants to
become a member of our pool of
suppliers must convince us with quality,
deliveries and dates", says the 57-yearold HEROSE employee, who has been
the Purchasing Manager since 1986.
In order to prevent dependencies, the
double-sourcing principle is used.
"This means that there are at least two
suppliers for every field."
The tasks in the department are clearly
assigned. Friedhelm Papke-Piotrowski:
"For me, it is very important that everyone
can make independent decisions as
far as possible." Volker Langkabel is
responsible for turned components,
raw, auxiliary and operating materials,
Christopher Ohlow for the purchase of
castings and housings from Asia. Anja
Rothenpieler is responsible for the
area "extended workbench" as well as
valve springs, while Beate Christiansen
purchases goods and operating
materials in Germany.
The essential factor for any successful
purchasing department is to order
goods so that they arrive just when
they are needed. It is not good if they
arrive early, as this would put a strain
on the storage capacity. Too late is even
worse, because in this case production
would come to a halt. Because of
this,
Friedhelm
Papke-Piotrowski,
who also acts as a deputy manager,
keeps in constant contact with the
other departments: "Nothing would
work without daily coordination." The
challenge: While 20 years ago about
80 percent of all purchases were made
in Germany, today the proportion has
reduced to less than 50 percent. Now
many items come from Asia. "Long
distances mean increasingly early
ordering with all the risks which this
entails."
With a slight shudder, the Australia
enthusiast Friedhelm Papke-Piotrowski
thinks back to last year: "Because of the
completely unexpected jump in sales,
we had the problem that we suddenly
used more material than we had
planned for. At times like these, a good
and rusting relationship to our suppliers
pays off." The same was true in 2009:
"Suddenly we produced much less than
we intended – and I had to persuade
our suppliers to postpone deliveries, in
spite of existing contracts." Both were
excellently achieved and as it is known,
HEROSE mastered the crisis.
Because the volatile nature of the market and globalisation of purchasing,
Friedhelm Papke-Piotrowski is certain
that he and his team will not be bored
in the future ....

When things get hot at the airport ...
The Austrian vehicle manufacturer is present at airports throughout the world:
New rescue ladder with HEROSE valves
View of the Rosenbauer delivery park
Günter Weigl and HEROSE Sales Manager Volker Maass in front of E8000 rescue stairs
You may remember: On 4 November
2010 an Airbus 380 from the Australian
airline Qantas had to make an
emergency landing at Singapore Airport
because an engine had exploded. For
the rapid evacuation of the more than
400 passengers, the airport used E8000
rescue stairs made by the Austrian
company Rosenbauer – stairs which
in certain versions are equipped with
HEROSE safety valves.
Leonding near Linz: This is where the
Austrian company has its headquarters.
Founded as a trading company in 1866,
Rosenbauer is now one of the leading
manufacturers for equipment for fire and
disaster protection and is the world's
largest exporter of fire service vehicles.
In 2010 company sales amounted to
about 600 million Euro, with a staff of
2000.
We have an appointment with Günter
Weigl. The Project Manager has been
with Rosenbauer since 1975 and was
responsible for the development of the
6
E8000 rescue stairs. The first of these
was delivered to Leipzig Airport in the
summer of 2010. Then Singapore came
and now between five and seven of these
vehicles are built every year. Minimum
price: 500,000 Euro.
When the talk is of rescue stairs,
most people immediately think of
burning aircraft and similar disasters,
however, luckily the reality is much more
mundane. Günter Weigl: "Of course,
the E8000 is primarily designed for the
rapid evacuation of passengers from
large aircraft, but in everyday use it is
mainly used for medical emergencies.
For example, if a passenger has a heart
attack and the aircraft has to make an
unscheduled landing it is much cheaper
and more efficient if the jet remains on
the apron and the patient is evacuated
with rescue stairs, rather than the aircraft
docking at a finger. At Frankfurt Airport
alone, there are between four and six
emergencies of this kind every year.
Painted on the wall: the outline of an A380
Even though the term rescue stairs
sounds unspectacular, from a technical
point of view the vehicle belongs to the
"top category", as Project Manager
Weigl emphasises. "A lot of know-how
goes into it." Effective rescue stairs
have to fulfil two criteria: They have to
enable as many people as possible to
be evacuated from the aircraft in a short
time and they have to be in position as
quickly as possible. With the E8000
Rosenbauer has taken both of these
factors into account: With an area of
eight square metres, the main stairway
has a very generously dimensioned top
platform. Thanks to a stair width of 1.50
metres, three passengers can climb
down together without obstruction. A
powerful engine is also important: For
example, the Leipzig rescue stairs are
equipped with a 480 hp engine. Together
with a special transmission, the vehicle
can accelerate to 80 km/h in less than
30 seconds. The maximum speed is 105
km/h.

ARMATUREN UND METALLE
We leave Günter Weigl's office for a tour
of the factory. In the large production
hall there are vehicles at various stages
of production: fire-fighting vehicles in all
colours, for fire services in Ireland, Saudi
Arabia or India. Rosenbauer produces
2000 vehicles per year – each of it is
produced individually. Günter Weigl:
"Every fire service has its own particular
requirements."
The outline of an Airbus 380 are painted
on the outside wall of the hall – in original
size. On this wall, Weigl demonstrates
the speed of the rescue stairs: In just
70 seconds they are extended to their
maximum height. They halt at a defined
distance from the aircraft and are docked
to it via the upper, telescopic platform.
This can be extended by up to a metre
and swiveled by up to 15 degrees, so
that the stairs can be precisely matched
to the shape of the aircraft. Proximity
sensors and a video camera on the
platform assist the operator during the
docking maneuver.
The rescue stairs Günter Weigl
drives across the company premises
for a demonstration this morning are
equipped with a telescopic water supply,
through which extinguishing water can
be supplied from other vehicles. This
water supply is equipped with HEROSE
Type 06370 safety valves, which prevent
any excess pressure. Why HEROSE?
"Because for many years this company
has stood for the very highest quality",
says Günter Weigl, "and that is what we
demand from all of the materials which
we use."
