History - Knox Kershaw Inc.
History
Based in Montgomery,
Alabama, Knox Kershaw,
Inc. was started in 1924
as the Royce Kershaw
Company. In September
1983 the company, oper
ated by Mr. Royce Kershaw Sr.'s son Knox, was changed to Knox Kershaw, Inc.
Knox Kershaw, Inc. has over 75 years of experience as an international supplier of goods and services
in the railroad industry. Our employees have a combined experience of over 400 years in design,
service, operating and building railroad track maintenance equipment.
Manufacturing
In our state-of-the art facility, we manufacture for sale or
lease new track maintenance equipment. Our equipment
is designed to be functional, comfortable, and efficient
with an emphasis on safety and ease of maintenance.
Knox Kershaw is the leading supplier of Ballast
Regulators, Tie Cranes, Track Brooms, Material Handlers
and other Equipment. Knox Kershaw also builds sophisti
cated, custom equipment to meet specific Customers'
requirement.
Remanufacture
Whether it is remanufacturing a machine to its original specifications or upgrading it with modern, more
productive components, Knox Kershaw, Inc.'s experience with many different makes and models of track
maintenance equipment will
save the customer money
while furnishing a stronger,
safer, more efficient and reli
able product. We back all of our
remanufactured machines with
a 90 day conditional "new
machine warranty".
Parts and Service
Our experienced service department technicians are on hand for the
initial startup of every new machine we manufacture. They are also
available on a consulting basis for all of our machines that are in the
field. We stock parts for other manufacturers as well as all parts for
our proprietary machines.
Our full line service department can supply new or remanufactured
parts on a component exchange program. Since we fabricate our
parts and components in our own facility, we do not have to rely on
outside suppliers.

KBC 1100
The KTC-1200 Tie Handling Crane is capable of han
dling 1200 Ibs. (544 kg) at a radius of 24' (7.32 m) from
track center. The unit is capable of 360-degree rota
tion. The heavy duty all welded reinforced construc
tion on the upper deck and mainframe withstands
loading and provides long life to the equipment. The
minimal tail swing reduces the possibility of fouling
the adjacent track.
The KBC-1100 Bridge Crane handles 900 Ibs. at a
radius of 24 ft. from center of rotation on level track.
Boom and grapple design provides the ability to
replace bridge ties, caps, and stringers quickly, with
minimal manpower. The 4000 Ib capacity winch easily
handles caps & stringers within a radius of 10ft from
the track centerline. Center locking rail dogs clamp
the machine to the rails for working over the side.

The KBR 875 resulted from a goal to manufacture a
machine that meets or exceeds Class 1 railroad speci
fications, but equally important, exceeds the specifica
tions of our competitor's machines. We have stretched
the wheelbase by three feet, which is the same length
as the wheelbase of our KBR-900. This will allow more
room for a larger cab and improved accessibility of all
components. An A-frame structure is not required to
support our wing, increasing the wheelbase, and allow
ing us to install either the four-speed manual drop box
or six-speed "shift on the go" transmission in such a
manner so that it can be easily removed in the field.
Plow:
Wing:
The 4-bar parallel link
mechanism
is
now
standard on all our bal
last regulators. It elimi
nates the necessity for
an expensive skid and
helps isolate shock and
vibration. Bolt on plow
blades and plow skid
are optional.
-
With 1.0 cubic yard (.76 cubic meters) capacity,
the T-1 steel constructed wings are 36"
(914mm) wide and designed for free flow of bal last. Articulated template doors are optional
and designed for excellent control while dress ing the shoul der. Wing reach
is 13 1-0" (3962
mm) from the
centerline
of
the track.
Broom:
The KBR 850 standard broom has a sweep width of 110" (2794 mm) and is driven by a
single motor chain. The patented 45-degree, V-shaped deflector allows for quick trans
fer of excess ballast to the track shoulder. Deflector assembly is hydraulically raised and
lowered.
Cab:
The highly functional cab features well laid out controls and safety glass windows. It
is temperature controlled and sound insulated. For the safety of the operator, a
comfortable seat, seat belt, electric wiper, air horn, rear view windows, west coast
mirrors, travel lights and four side work lights are standard.

The KKA 1000 is designed to be a heavy duty Kribber Adzer that is easy to operate, simple to troubleshoot, and
accessible for repair and service.
Engine Assembly: Cummins 6BTA5.9 diesel, water cooled engine rated at 200HP @ 2200 rpm with Funk triple pump
drive with twin disc clutch.
Propel System: 3" diameter alloy steel axles, propel motor drives one axle through chain drive.
Wheels and Brakes: 16" cast steel wheels, service brakes are air applied, spring released, on all wheels.
Turntable: Standard
Adzer:
The adzer head utilizes slider box mounting with hydraulic
cylinders for horizontal and vertical movements. This pro
vides sturdy mounting and precise control from the cab.
The adzer bearing housing is flange mounted to the head
frame - no more bolts breaking off in the housing.
Crawlers:
The crawlers are large, heavy-duty units designed to
give trouble free service.
Cab:
The roomy 54" wide cab is accessed from
the rear, from the side of the frame, elimi
nating the need for walkway access. The
controls are located in a logical manner and
the seat features side shift adjustment.
Kribber Reels:
The kribber reels do a superb job of
cribbing because they are long enough
to mount 6 elements per flight instead
of 4. This helps to assure the ballast is
sufficiently removed from the cribs as
well as sweeping the ties clean in front
of the adzer head. Access to the rear
reel bearing is improved, making serv
ice and repair easier.
www.knoxkershaw.com
Dust Vacuum:
The vacuum system is a high capacity unit that uses a positive
pressure cyclone to separate dust and debris. The mounting is
fixed and sturdy - no pivoting mounts to break. This means no
more clogged cyclones, since there is no accumulation of mate
rial inside the cyclone.
Material handling fan provides suction at
adzer head and produces positive pres
sure in the cyclone unit.
Debris trail is left
away from ties.
Engine:
The engine is located to keep the radiator away from the adzer head.
The air cleaner is located to minimize dust intake. The muffler is posi
tioned to allow good visibility.
Hydraulics:
The hydraulic system is simple to
trouble shoot. The components are
located for ease of access, and to
minimize the risk of fires caused by
debris accumulation and hydraulic
leaks.
Turntable:
The turntable is permanently mounted, and allows for quick machine direc
tion change.
Mainframe:
The mainframe is long enough to allow open component mounting to facili
tate service and cleaning. This helps reduce the possibility of fire.
Fire Prevention:
The machine design reduces buildup of debris and allows for easy cleaning.
We install an onboard water tank and offer an automatic fire suppression
system as an option.

on the track and the shoulders. Side mounted plow "wings" gather and
bring the waste from the shoulders closer to the track where it could be
picked up by the broom.
Pickup System:
Hydraulically driven broom with 45 _" (1,155.7 mm) diameter reel is equipped with solid
rubber elements 2 11 (50.8 mm) in diameter and 18" (457.2 mm) in
