Don’t get me wrong, we need clean air, water and trees for oxygen in our atmosphere. But if we believe in honor and in the word of God, we understand what is going on in the world today. We know from the Bible that earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes and other bad things are going to happen. Bad weather has always been a part of our history and will always be. The greatest concern of us as a society and worldwide predictions is the change in our money system to the world money system or the mark of ‘666.’ This is close on the horizon; in a cashless society, a world-wide mark is to be either in your hand or forehead. (We understand this is to be a number, and we are to study to be sure that we are not deceived, like taking a global password that we remember to buy and sell.) This is the answer for the Anti-Christ to control market places, our thoughts, our whereabouts and our worldwide peace that he will bring to the table. Yes, a man of peace will come with great words to deceive all, the most evil person on the planet and he will be poised to carry out the evil plan and PowerSourceMusic.com spirit of satan. Please do not take the mark. The Bible will explain there will be 3 ½ years of prosperity, then 3 ½ years of sorrow of the great tribulation. Some teachers teach we will be raptured (taken out) before; some teach we will go through the 7 years. Be ready and prepare for either. God will purge the earth, and some day all that is bad will be destroyed by fire and this will happen because of global sinning. You see God gave life and sustained life and our breath through His creation of the ozone layer. Let’s stay with Him and get sin out of our lives. This includes all sin. Sins separate us from God and His Blessings. If you are going to live, love and obey God you must learn and live by and know His word. May peace be with you always and pray for God to heal our country. PS Revelation 9:18 (KJV) By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths. 2 Peter 3:7 (KJV) … but the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. It is appointed each man to die, Romans 6:23 (KJV) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Publicity is the tool to get your name known. Can’t afford a Publicity/Public Relations Company to do the work for you? Inspirational Country News is a FREE opportunity that Power Source Magazine gives to our artists. The articles are dedicated primarily to members of the Inspirational Country Music Association, but if space allows, we do include all of those in this genre. Do you think that the news is always full of the same people and placement for publication seems unfair — ever thought that they are the ones who send in their articles and high resolution images. Month after month, we dedicate four pages (up to 16 articles) to YOU, YOUR music and ministry in God’s Service! This is a FREE service to help publicize your work to approximately 2,000 radio stations, fans and fellow artists. Wonder why audiences don’t know more about this genre? Do you think that everyone knows what our artists do? We want and need to show them through this section of Power Source Magazine. How do you think most mainstream artists get the media’s attention … donations, gifts (i.e.; guitars, hats, shoes, meet and greets, etc.), associations with charities, album/video music releases, disaster help, benefit concerts and much more — the same things that you do. What is the difference between the two of you is that they have publicity people to move them and report to all possible sources. One of the best public relations person that 16 April 2014 By: Ann Hittinger I know, writes an article three ways and sends it from different emails, but they are all from the same person and about the same event. But it is written three different ways and I may choose the best for our needs. NOW, I don’t mean that you should write three articles each time, one is sufficient, but important. Why is this section of Power Source Magazine important? • PUBLICITY is needed to help get bookings. When an article is sent to Power Source Magazine (including John Gusty), our goal is to help promote past or future events and services. Also, your public service to others. • At this point, Indie artists may not be able to afford their own Publicity/Public Relations’ person or time to be their own. You can be a great performer, but unless someone knows who you are, bookings aren’t going to be as prominent. • One story can be published in at least four sources — magazine, online, social media and to the local media (i.e.: newspapers, TV, radio, internet). Although we request and reserve first rights for publication, most local sources will release after the fact. • Through emails and online in December ONLY, we were viewed internationally by a minimum of people in ten countries. • Want to be recognized more, to give more to God, then your name has to be seen consistently; during these times, perception is even greater than reality. No, do not misrepresent yourself, but give information about how you are using your time to the Glory of God. • Maybe you need to think of it as publicizing the Lord’s work, if you feel that you shouldn’t get any glory. • Remember that each church or organization where you perform may have an opportunity to be publicized, which increases their exposure and your value as a possible return performance. PowerSourceMagazine.com PowerSource 04_14_PowerSource 04_14 3/11/14 5:12 PM Page 17 What is Inspirational Country News and what do I need to include? The article should be within the following guidelines: • Be a brief article of 150 to 490 words, • A factual article, NOT OPINION or testimony. • Written in third person (written as an outsider looking in or on the event) • High resolution images or logos (not website photos) • Always answer “Who, What, When, Where, Why and How?” in the first paragraph and then, lesser important information, decreasing in importance to the end. (This writing style is called “Inverted Pyramid.”) • Events, benefits, tours, album releases, experiences or success stories and awards happening. [Note: Considering that several issues are dedicated to the ballot process and the final show of the Inspirational ® Country Music Awards , individual articles of awards are not printed, due to space.] • Include one to two short quotes, to make the article personable. Think for a moment of your favorite artist. Aren’t you always interested in reading articles about upcoming albums, concerts, charity events, etc.? That’s why submitting an Inspirational Country Music News article is a perfect opportunity. These articles serve as a way for you to share and promote information to other artists, fans, radio and industry professionals, just like your favorite artist. Of course, the free PR doesn’t hurt either. Think of it this way, in recognition of Easter, it's just one more way for you to share the love of God. “How do I write an article?” Don’t worry … it is as easy as 1 … 2 … 3 to write … just start writing! 1. WRITE: Initially, it doesn't have to be grammatically correct, so simply start writing like you were updating your best friend, mother or whomever, about what has been happening in your career/ministry. 2. PROOF: Once you get the article written, channel your inner-English teacher and proof-it for grammar, spelling, etc. Perfect would be great, but we know that not everyone is a writer/journalist. Note: The more print-ready the article is — the fewer corrections and grammatical changes — the faster the article gets into the magazine. 3. SUBMIT: We have designed a form that can help to pull your information together and submit, which comes directly to us and we will write the article for you. • For any images larger than 10MB please use Dropbox or Hightail to share with [email protected] • Usually, the Dropbox or Hightail service is free, but check for your needs. PowerSourceMusic.com PowerSource ‘Inverted Pyramid’ Writing Style Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? Most important information moving progressively toward Least important information There are always other options than writing it yourself, such as: • Find that family or church member who is willing to write for you, or • Find a neighborhood teenager or college student who wants to be published, or • Enlist the help of your biggest fan, who is able to compile information and images. • But remember, factual doesn't have to mean boring. Be sure to make it interesting and ask yourself “Would I want to read this if it were not about me?” A few more things … • We try to run one article on an artist every other month. But without articles, we use what we have. (Sadly, we should have a lot more than we get.) • So get those articles in! • Check for due dates for text. (For consistency, we have revamped our materials due dates for articles, text and ads to be due on MONDAYS or the day after a holiday. i.e.; articles submitted in May could run in June, July to August, etc.). • Normally, a reminder email is sent one week before the final deadlines! For your reference, the Production Schedule (deadline calendar) will now be posted on PSM.com. • Send in your articles EARLY each month for the next issue. • Please, do not use this article as an example of an Inspirational Country Music News Article! This is a teaching conversation to encourage more articles and publicity. • To complete the entire monthly magazine (advertising and articles), we usually have two weeks after the deadlines to be completed. Therefore, deadlines are VERY IMPORTANT! • The Production Schedule (Calendar) will be sent with the next deadlines email reminder and on PSM.com. Please check your monthly calendar for the deadline dates. From home in Hudson, Wisconsin, Joe and his wife Jane traveled almost 2,600 miles with his Managers Bob and Janan Terpstra. Being from the ‘frozen north’ they were hoping for warmer weather, but encountered three different snow storms. They were caught in Birmingham, Alabama, the same storm that made news in Georgia. Joe’s first interview was at WCKF in Ashland, Alabama, which is located on top of Alabama’s highest peak. The GPS had trouble locating the station but once the group arrived they were welcomed with open arms and had a wonderful time on the air with David Burkhalter. The second visit was at WLLX in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. Eddie Landtroop talked with Joe and introduced him to the station owner, Roger Wright, who gave him a tour of their space including a dance hall. Joe was also warmly received in Jamestown, Tennessee, at WDEB by Garry Clark and in Hartsville, Tennessee, at WTNK by Jerry Richmond. While on the air, Joe talked about growing up around men who served in various wars and being a veteran himself. Those experiences plus the tragedy of 9/11 caused him to write “You Can’t Take The US From The USA.” Joe also answered questions about starting his prolific songwriting during rehab for alcohol abuse, his childhood in a large Irish family and his passionate love for God, family and country. They don’t satisfy for more than a few fleeting moments and they distract me from delighting in the spread of God’s acceptance prepared for me. In this culture of ‘selfies’ and self-promotion (not always as shameless), the temptation to eat scraps is ever before us. Before we rush to post about our accomplishments or fantastic opportunities, let’s learn to pause and ask ourselves the hard question of “why.” If the answer is to win the approval of others so we feel better about ourselves, let’s choose to go in another direction. Will you join me in breaking up with approval seeking? Instead, let’s seek the One who has already approved us! And if God is for us, who can be against us? Her songs express the heart of the South mixed with inspiration and hope for better days ahead. The writer, musician, actress, spokesperson and the artist behind the No. 1 Inspirational Country single “I Will Trust” (August 2013), meet Jennifer Nickerson: I wish people would just get along. I wish that all parties and races could meet in the middle. The country’s economy and culture needs drastic changes that will only happen by Americans joining together and not from a political tug of war. I wish that politicians would fulfill their promises. And the focus of America would stay on becoming the best. I think that great headway could be made for our nation. The State of Texas has produced some household names in the entertainment industry and beyond. Any famous Texans you’re especially fond of? With all the things going on in the world today … how about the “State of The Union” Jennifer Nickerson-style: Country Music has always reflected more traditional values and a simpler, more humble way of life. Today's artists seem to be gravitating more towards HipHop/Rap, Party music. Do you sense a disconnection with the traditional Country music listener in regards to what is featured on the radio these days? I love the old Country music! Don’t get me wrong, I can have a good time with the new stuff. But it doesn’t sound like Country music. I find when I tell people I sing Country they immediately say “Country or this new Pop Rock Country?” I want to be a balanced style of old steel guitar, fiddle, guitars and not a bunch of bass beats with auto-tune. I’m an easy sell for positive and fun music. I’m not a big fan of the drama and negative subjects that are coming out these days. Get more information on Jennifer at www.jennifernickerson.com. One never knows exactly how these types of recording sessions will work out. Or what the final result will be. Thankfully for Steve Richard and Laura Dodd, the result would turn out to be their duet “I See You In Everything”— their first musical collaboration together. Not bad for a first try! A little more than a year after the song was recorded, it was 32 April 2014 via live performance at the 2012 Inspirational Country Music ® Awards , it solidified what would turn out to be a debut partnership of both music and ministry. “I love Laura’s spiritfilled joy and her powerful voice,” Steve explained. “I knew we’d sing well together.” Laura laughingly chimes in: “I was so nervous! Steve found it necessary to pray for my ability to sing a couple of lines in the song. This should prove the power of prayer!” So it was the success of “I See You In Everything,” along with the comfortable working relationship, that set the stage for more collaborative efforts. But first, let’s take a look back at the paths that brought these two Inspirational Country music artists together. Dodd elaborates: “Steve and I first met backstage at the 2010 ® Inspirational Country Music Awards . Steve closed the show with his spectacular, rhinestone-studded performance of ‘Eighty Acre Church.’” Laura’s road to that year’s awards show was the culmination of a lifetime of musical drive and ambition. “All sit- my life I have longed for a musical career. Theatrical perting at formances throughout my school years set the stage for an important college opportunity. One of my musical No.1 Inspirational instructors submitted my name to Very Special Arts (VSA) arts, a national and international organization based in Country Music Chart Washington, D.C. As a result, I was chosen as the VSA for June 2013. arts/Panasonic young soloists for 2 years. This opened up a wider range of performing opportunities, cementing my Produced desire for a musical career. My love for singing, acting and by Phil songwriting has never wavered.” O’Donnell Richard’s career incentive began with simpler motives: (Craig Morgan), “When I began performing as a teenager, my main goal the song is a was to meet girls.” He channeled that enthusiasm and powerful and drive into a mainstream Country career that started with unapologetic a single and video for the song “Stomp” — a raucous party recognition of anthem that ignited its own line-dance craze. I still enjoy the entertainment aspect of music,” Richard continues, “but the subject matter and spirit have been elevated.” Bottom line —Steve ‘got right’ with God. “My path has been slightly different.” explains Laura. “The obstacle placed in my path is a physical ailment. Also most recently, the loss of my brother Jamey affected me so deeply that I almost abandoned my career. I do not recall ever sharing this with Steve, but his friendship and the opportunity to work with him supported my continuing with music.” That solid foundation upon which the Richard/Dodd friendship is built, allows for both artists to deliver what they do best … create positive, inspiring Country music with purpose and entirely for God’s glory. “I try to make music that will move Christians and nonbelievers by the sound.” says Richard. “Some lyrics are obviously worship and prayer, while other songs I hope ‘sneak up’ on non-believers — in that they were enjoying the sound, before they absorbed the Message.” Laura Dodd is no stranger to music as a ministry tool — why it works and why it’s effective. “I have first-hand knowledge of the power of music in communicating and reaching those in need. In Montgomery, Alabama, I was invited to entertain an audience with limited communication skills. Upon my arrival, the room’s noise level was at fever pitch. As soon as I began to sing, you could have heard a pin drop for the entire performance. All of the students were severely disabled, but their reaction to my music was truly music to my ears.” Since this interview, Laura has been contacted by the GBS and CIDP Foundation in Pennsylvania to perform and speak at their International Symposium in Orlando, Florida, on October 31-November 2. Both Steve and Laura have been recognized within the Inspirational Country Music industry as being at the top of their game. Both artists have been awarded “New Artist of the Year.” (Steve in 2009 and Laura in 2010) Steve had the 2012 Video of the Year for the song “Toothbrush.” And both artists know what it feels like to have a No. 1 Inspirational Country Music song. So how do these two feel about the current state of mainstream popular Country Music? Laura Dodd is very diplomatic in her PowerSource assessment: “I thoroughly enjoy listening to and singing the music of today’s Country artists. But, my heart has always been drawn to traditional Country music. Probably because my grandparents shared their love of The ® Grand Ole Opry with me; I have joked with Steve about our doing a Porter and Dolly duet. We’ll see!” “I realize that today’s popular music is very subjective,” continues Laura, “I would not be comfortable performing in the same manner as some of today’s artists. We can certainly evolve with our melodies but not our morality.” Richard is a bit more direct; “I have little interest and involvement in current popular entertainment, other than what I supply to it. I might have more ‘success,’ if I did.” Perhaps, if success is to be measured by worldly standards, but as Laura Dodd points out, success is relative; “If I can positively impact one person’s life, then I will have achieved my measurement of success.” Both artists are keenly aware of just how far the morality-bar has been lowered. “We’re frogs, slowly boiling on the stove. Spectacle reins.” Richard notes, “As a nation, do we have a collective purpose? Perhaps it’s the pursuit of comfort; we continue to legislate God out of America, and then throw around phrases like ‘God Bless the U.S.A.’ What do we mean by that? Are we merely asking for strength and prosperity? Or are we admitting that we should be acting in such a way that God could bless us?” “Sometimes He blesses us by breaking us,” continues Steve. “When we reach the point where we recognize how broken we are — that’s when we can be receptive and willing to change. Unfortunately, we tend to look around for help in almost any other direction than the True Source of Power who can actually transform us. When we reach the end of ourselves, God can and will do His most powerful work in and through us.” Laura agrees; “Now more than ever our country needs positive role models as well as positive messages. Character, good work ethics and unselfishness could be daily habits for our entire nation.” Steve wraps it up nicely, “As a nation, we must acknowledge, encourage, and nurture our dependence on our Creator. Apathy and blindness masked as tolerance is a problem. Tolerance is the final virtue of a lost society.” In 2014, these two are just getting warmed up. “I hope for more work with Laura this year with lots of appearances,” Richard declares. “I’m really excited about our new single, “The Rock On Which I Stand,” written by Russ Murphy and produced by Phil O’Donnell. I believe y’all will find this record very inspiring.” Laura Dodd is up for the task; “I would love for Steve and I to do a tour Steve Richard and wife Rachelle (left) with Laura Dodd and together. Who knows, maybe we’ll be able to return to the studio for more duets!” PS husband Joseph Reynolds Downs IV at 2012 ICM Awards® PowerSourceMusic.com April 2014 33 PowerSource 04_14_PowerSource 04_14 3/11/14 4:26 PM Page 34 “Get Out Of Town” Nashville has been my home for over twelve years. distance from Nashville And I readily admit I love Music City USA. Charlie Daniels could never have imagined in the late ‘60s that answering a call from producer Bob Johnston to add his guitar to three of Dylan’s Nashville projects (Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait and New Morning ) would give him confidence and legitimacy for his own destination as a musical icon. His first album since 2007, Off The Grid is ‘Dylan, the Daniels way’ and the result is sheer musical genius. “It was about 50 years ago when I first became aware of Bob Dylan — and no, I was not naïve enough to … try to emulate what he had done, or cop his licks. Nobody could do that,” notes Daniels. “My ambitions were to provoke some thought, color and [creativity] — in other words to be myself.” Sister Trio Michaelis Signs With APA Artist Management Partners (APA) has signed the sister trio Michaelis. This group has created a stylistically diverse collection of classic songs paired with inspired new Ballads — “Hidden Heroes” and “What We Leave Behind”— that pay tribute to parents whose legacy will stand the test of time. In a world that’s always changing, these remain: faith, hope and love. These are the things that stand The Test Of Time. ” This East-Tennessee family — Roger, wife Debra and their daughter Lauren — have been fixtures on the popular Gaither Homecoming Series since 1999. PowerSourceMusic.com PowerGospel Kutless Excited About New CD Glory Kutless is so excited and proud about their new CD Glory and the hard work put into every song. As worship leaders in Portland, Oregon, they have always had a heart for Worship as well as a love of upbeat, Rock ’N’ Roll music. They realized the opportunity to bring these two strengths together and to create a Worship record of all original songs that could be sung by a congregation and maintain a worshipful atmosphere, while sonically pressing forward and bringing a bit of an edge and enthusiasm to these worship songs. This record is designed to encourage people to worship in Spirit and in truth and bring fresh life to Sunday morning worship services, a daily commute or any time you simply want to sing out loud and worship Jesus. It is a congregational Worship CD, yet still distinctly a Kutless record. And as James Mead states, “I believe it captures both our musical strengths as well as our distinct heart for worship.” “We are a Rock and Worship band,” expresses Kutless, “It is who we are. It is who we have always been. We have progressed and changed a bit over the years, but these two core elements have always been the backbone to the music that we write and record.” The group has been focusing on the ministry aspect,” James Mead explains, “but it is easy to get caught up in the glitter of the music industry, but we feel that God has called us to focus on sharing His love with people. We have a heart for evangelism and we hope that our music can continue to open doors so that we can continue to share the Gospel with those who need to hear it.” The Portland-based band has released seven studio albums on BEC Recordings. Kutless has two RIAA Goldselling albums for Strong Tower and Live From Portland. The band has had 12 No. 1 radio singles across all formats including their major hits “Strong Tower,” “What Faith Can Do” and “Carry Me To The Cross.” Launched by the original members Jon Micah Sumrall, lead vocals, and guitarist James Mead in 2000 and now, includes Nick de Partee and Kyle Peek. This commitment led to the 2010 launch of Show Hope’s Student Initiatives, which encompasses The Movement Club for high schools as well as the Red Bus Project for college students. In just over three years, more than 15,000 students have been empowered to care for orphans through these programs! Along with The Movement Club and Red Bus Project, students are becoming Show Hope™ sponsors, raising funds as adoption advocates and going overseas on Show Hope short-term trips. Throughout this movement to care for orphans, Show Hope™ is excited to see how the younger generation is leading the charge to show hope to those in need. Recently, Show Hope™ highlighted the high school-focused program, The Movement Club. The Movement is a group of student-led, orphan care service clubs found in numerous high schools across America. The program began when a group of high school students in Tennessee wanted to reach their peers to “be the difference” in the life of an orphan. They are as unique as Show Hope; it is the only organization establishing orphan care clubs in high schools nationwide. To date, there are 21 clubs across the USA with plans to open more. High school students from Franklin, Tennessee, Emily Suttle and Julia Minucci, both lead their school’s Movement Club and have already made a huge difference in the lives of orphans. They recently put on Concert For A Cause, a local benefit concert that raised close to $1,000 for the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home. “Show Hope has provided such an amazing opportunity for students to become involved with orphan and foster care. The Movement has allowed me to use my heart for orphan care and in turn let me serve others.” shares Emily Suttle. Julia Minucci adds, “Working with the Show Hope Student Initiatives and the Movement Club has been an incredible experience in my life … I believe that when students come together for an incredible cause, something magical happens.” April 2014 The Music City Show successfully ends a first season with Ernie Haase and Signature Sound. Ernie Haase was the tenor for the Cathedral Quartet and now, he and Signature Sound are packing auditoriums across the country. The show has developed a loyal following of 100,000+ viewers per week, which is growing weekly. New shows are in the planning stages to bring more of Gospel Music’s favorite artists and groups. Those who have participated are the Blackwood Brothers, Booth Brothers, Bowling Family, Gene McDonald, Greater Vision, Legacy 5, Karen Peck and New River, Tim Lovelace, Aaron Wilburn, Kevin Williams, Southern Raised, the world famous Blue Jean Band and more. You never want to miss out on the Positive Cowboy Jim Sheldon rounding out the show. “I am amazed with the response we have received from fans across North America,” states Scott Godsey of Godsey and Associates, “Season 2 is going to be even better and more exciting!” The Williamsons Releases CD Project The Williamsons from Weleetka, Oklahoma, are excited about the release of the new CD Counting My Blessings featuring Lisa Williamson. This project is a mixture of songs written by Dottie Rambo and Kevin Wright along with five songs by Lisa. It showcases Lisa’s variety in writing, such as Ballads, Story Songs and a children’s song sang by daughters, Sadie and Olivia Williamson. The first radio single is titled “This Army Keeps Marching On” with Vertical Sky. “I am so excited to be working with the Williamsons,” said Donna King, “and to get to produce a recording is really exciting for me.” Lisa says, “A good friend of ours showed me the original recording of this song, and I immediately fell in love with it. What a message! We may be weary but the army of God keeps marching on.” As usual, she did a great job on a great song and it can be purchased on their website. In true Gray fashion, the album is a soul-stirring collection of songs that speaks to the redeeming power of unfailing love. Produced by Jason Ingram (Chris Tomlin, Sanctus Real, Tenth Avenue North) and Cason Cooley (Derek Webb, Andrew Peterson), sonically the record blends Gray’s acoustic guitar with touches of banjo, mandolin and sweeping pop. Its mood is often somber, thoughtful and enthusiastic, mirroring the album’s powerful lyrics. Gray co-wrote every track with an all-star team including Ingram, Andy Gullahorn, Ben Glover, Josh Wilson and Nichole Nordeman. Gray’s Love Will Have The Final Word asserts that the ultimate victory has been won for us . . . Love has spoken. “I hope when people hear the record they are persuaded that God deeply loves them for who they are,” explains Gray, “and not for who they think they should be.” Tamela Mann Awarded NAACP Image Award Grammy -Award Nominated Vocalist Tamela Mann received a NAACP Image Award during the 45th NAACP Image Awards in Pasadena, California. Davis, along with his Warrior River Boys, has been running the road playing traditional Bluegrass since the Fall of 1984. He is currently a Rebel Recording artist, and had previously recorded for Rounder, Wango and Time Life. Now touring as the Warrior River Boys are Marty Hays, bass; Robert Montgomery, banjo; Stan Wilemon, guitar and Ben Sanders on fiddle. Davis plays mandolin and sings lead. Davis’ Hall of Fame induction will be during the 39th annual Old-Time Music Festival at the Plymouth County Fairgrounds in LeMars, Iowa, August 25-31. “Davis is among this year’s class,” explains Bob Everhart, director of the National Traditional Country Music Association, which has run their Hall of Fame since 1978, “David is a very deserving guy. He will be joining some famous Bluegrass folks from the past. Among them is Bill Monroe, considered the ‘Father of Bluegrass’ music. Not many Bluegrass folks know that there is quite a story about Monroe when he came to Iowa in 1934. He met his wife, a pretty girl from Clarinda. He and his brother Charley performed as a duet at that time on KFNF radio in Shenandoah, Iowa, and it was their very first ‘paying’ music gig. [Some say that] the brothers had a terrible fight over the girl.” “In the Hall of Fame,” continues Everhart, “is the suit ® worn by Bill Monroe on his last Grand Ole Opry performance, including his tie and Opry tie-pin. David’s items will be on display at this same location in the Hall of Fame.” Davis is proud to be listed in such company. “It is definitely a special honor to be inducted. In fact, there are so many different types of artists and different segments of American music genres represented, which makes it even more significant,” shares Davis. April 2014 The Roys Top Bluegrass Artist At IAMA The Roys, award-winning brother-sister duo, were named Top Bluegrass Artist at the 10th Annual International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMA) in February. The IAMA promotes excellence in acoustic music performance and artistry, acoustic artists in various genres. “Another Minute,” a song penned by Lee Roy in fond remembrance of his grandfather and released on The Roys’ recent hit-album Gypsy Runaway Train, competed against thousands of entries from all over the world. Winners were chosen by a Blue Ribbon Judging Committee comprised of music industry professionals including A&R managers from record labels, publishers and producers and judged equally on music performance, production, originality, lyrics, melody and composition. “What an honor it is to be recognized internationally for this song!” says an elated Lee Roy. “My grandfather was such an incredible person, and the time I had with him was so precious! As Elaine Roy explains, “We couldn’t be more thrilled!” Carlene Carter To Release First New Recordings In A Decade! Carter Girl, Carlene Carter’s first album in a decade, will be released April 8 by Rounder Records. The album was produced by Don Was, mixed by Bob Clearmountain and is, in a very literal way, Carlene’s personal homage to her Carter Family roots and to the ethos that has been the foundation of much of America's music for almost 90 years. As the daughter of June Carter Cash and Country music great Carl Smith, the granddaughter of Mother Maybelle Carter and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, Carlene says it has been her life-long goal to make this record. “The songs on the album cover three generations of Carter Family music,” she notes. In fact, she shares writing credit with A.P. Carter on “Lonesome Valley 2003,” an updating of the Carter Family patriarch's “Lonesome Valley” that reflects the loss of Carlene's mother, sister and stepfather eleven years ago. Bluegrass and picnics seem to be as natural as peanut butter and jam. For the past ten years, the Red, White and Bluegrass Festival in Morganton, North Carolina, has run the five days up to Independence Day — including a big fireworks display to close things out — but the 2014 schedule presented a dilemma. With the 4th landing on a Friday, a festival running five days leading up to that date would have ended up Monday-Friday with no weekend days at all. So Festival Manager Gary Leonhardt decided to push it back a week, and go to a three day format. This year the event will run June 26-28, at the same location (Catawba Meadows Park), and all the music and fun into a compressed schedule. All of the songs on this album focus on the second coming of Jesus, as well as eternity. Some of the artists that contribute to this compilation are Merchant Band, Audra Lynn, Cory Asbury and Julie Meyer. The album opens with Merchant Band’s “I Can’t Wait,” which is a dynamic anthem about looking forward to spending eternity in Heaven. Jonas Park’s “Coming Home” is definitely a magical moment on the album. His vocal has so much character and believability. This song was written from the perspective of Jesus, which is extremely unique. The comforting lyric is supported by jubilant production. Other songs to check out are “Shine On Us” and “City Of Great King.” The positive nature of this album makes it really easy to listen to. Not to mention, the artists that contribute to the project are amazingly talented. THE EASTER BROTHERS | I’D DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN The Easter Brothers have been making Gospel Music since the early 1950s. The three brothers have written over 400 songs throughout their careers, including the title track to their new album, I’d Do It All Over Again. The title track was written with Gerald Crabb and is a great ending to a wonderful album. The album starts, however, with a fun, up-tempo song titled “Let The Hallelujah Roll.” This song is a great example of the Easter Brothers music. Other songs worth noting on this album are “The Lost Sheep” and “Little By Little, Drifting Too Far.” The latter song is a mid-tempo song with a powerful lyric. The vocal delivery is great too, as you can hear the conviction in the brother’s voices. Given how long the Easter Brothers have been making music, it’s not hard to believe how great the trio sounds. Their music is going to be around forever, and the Gospel music world should be grateful for that gift. KRISTY COX | LIVING FOR THE MOMENT Australian Bluegrass artist Kristy Cox released a new album on February 18, 2014. This multi-award winning star has found a new home in Nashville, Tennessee, and releases this album on Pisgah Records. Produced by Nashville songwriter Jerry Salley, this album certainly captures the Bluegrass-feel that Cox is known for internationally. The album also includes songs written by hit writers like Jim McBride, Gerald Crabb and others. Cox has a wonderful vocal. She has that pure tone that is very hard to find. She sounds particularly great on “Something In The Way” and “I’ll Cry Tonight.” There are plenty of great songs on this album, though. It’s also worth noting that the album was A&R’d by Mickey Gamble, as the song selection is magnificent. Keep your eyes on Kristy Cox, she is going to do great things in the USA. MATT WALLACE | FOR A SEASON Up-and-comer Matt Wallace released his first solo album on March 11. Currently, Wallace is the bassist for Pinecastle Records artists Mark Newton and Steve Thomas, but on this particular project, Wallace takes the spotlight. His skills as a bass player and his unique vocal are the focus of this 10-song album. Wallace also has the help of his friends in singing 5 songs on the project. The album opens with a groovy song, “Creepin’ In.” The second song “Old Man Winter” is the first single off the project. This song has a nostalgic feeling to it and is really well-produced. Wallace also covers the Neil Diamond song “Long Gone,” which is a fun track. Other songs to check out are “Home In Tennessee” and “Lonesome Homesick Blues.” Wallace’s debut album is really well-done. Expect great things from this talented musician and artist. 54 Editor’s note: These albums have been reviewed by a major record label executive and reflect his opinions, not the opinion of Power Source Magazine. The group is off to a quick start, though, having been nominated for Best Duo or Group at the CMA of Ontario Awards. The 7-song album opens with an inspirational mid-tempo, “This I Promise You,” which essentially is an encouraging song to one’s lover. The second track, and first single off the album, is “Wherever You Are.” This well-written song has great production, and it also showcases the vocal harmonies of the group. Having a female vocal between two male vocals is really great, especially on this song. Another song on the album worth noting is “What My Heart Had In Mind.” This song is a typical love song, but the hook is really great – ‘you’re what my heart had in mind.’ The vocal delivery on this song is great too. Good debut album from an up-and-coming Canadian group. The sophomore album from Ember In Ashes was released February 25. The rock group from Birmingham, Alabama, definitely knows how to rock; however, their lyrical content is very personal and real when it comes to portraying who they are as people. The album opens with a blazing track, “Set Fire.” This heavy electric guitardriven song talks about starting over. The electric guitar riffs seem to be the signature sound that this band has become known for. The second track, “Into My Arms,” seems to be the most commercial song on the album. This personal song deals with two of the members of the band growing up without a father and how that leads to issues with abandonment. While this album is pretty heavy musically, lyrically, these songs can speak to a lot of people. Another song to check out on the album is the title track, “Killers & Thieves.” This is a good album from unique artists. Royal Wade Kimes’ album A Proud Land has twelve songs, all of which were co-written by Kimes, himself. The album was produced by George Bradfute, Mike Noble and Royal Wade Kimes. The project was executive produced by Barbara Hayden. The album opens with a mid-tempo song, “Ride The Wagon Johnny,” which has the feel of a traditional Civil War song. The sparse production and multiple background vocal parts add a classic feel to this song. “White Flag” is another song that stands out on this album. From the opening line, there is much imagery in this song. Kimes has the ability to make you feel like you’re standing on the battle fields in the Civil War. Though most of the songs on the album are pretty simplistic from a musical standpoint, the lyrical content is extremely impressive. These songs should be used in film and TV, any time the Civil War is being discussed. Casey Henley recently released his debut album Pieces Of Art. The associate pastor and worship director of Houston’s Faith Family Baptist Church is also a great singer-songwriter. The album was co-produced by Tyrus Morgan and Jay Speight and features 8 songs. The first track on the album, “Lost No More,” is extremely hooky. The melody is very catchy, while the lyric is both personal and powerful. The title track, “Pieces Of Art,” is also very commercial. The chant-like chorus reminds us that we are all ‘pieces of art,’ created by God. Once again, the production on this album is definitely worth noting. It is very hip, current, polished and easy to listen to. “Crash Over Us” is another standout song on the album. The song starts with sparse production with a rhythmic drum loop, while the chorus soars. Lastly, the song “Fly” is a must-hear for any parents. This lullaby was written for Henley’s daughter and is a lovely song and reflection of who Casey Henley is as a person and artist. THE BRADYS | ENTIRELY POSSIBLE The Bradys, who hail from South Alabama, are a Southern Gospel group with a new album, Entirely Possible. Having grown up on Gospel music, it is definitely in their blood! This energetic album kicks off with a powerful song, “Job Days,” which really sets the tone for the rest of the album. Sylvia Merle Green wrote 8 of the 10 songs on the album, while Alan Brady wrote the remaining two songs, one of which is “My New Home.” This mid-tempo song really showcases the harmonies that the Bradys are known for. Other standout songs are “How Many Times” and “This Time I’m The One.” The latter is the first single that has been shipped to radio. “This Time I’m The One” is a good first single choice, in that it shows who the Bradys are and why they are different than other Southern Gospel groups. This moving song is certain to keep this group in the forefront of the format. PowerSourceMusic.com JAN HARBUCK | COUNTRY GIRL AT HEART Jan Harbuck is a ‘Country girl at heart’ and her new album certainly reflects that. Her album, which is justly called Country Girl At Heart, has 10 songs on it, some of which Harbuck wrote. The album was produced by Jan Harbuck and recorded in Tennessee, South Carolina and Texas. The Country production fits Harbucks vocal perfectly. Harbuck’s vocal is very unique and you can certainly identify it as soon as you hear it. Some of the notable songs on the album are “One Step At A Time,” “Washed In By The Blood” and “Let’s Make Some Noise.” Harbuck certainly believes in what she is doing as an artist – you can hear it in her vocal delivery. While she may not make it on the waves of Country radio, Harbuck should have some success as an Inspirational Country artist. Jeremy is not only a professional entertainer and songwriter; he is also an A-list guitar player. Jeremy is already making a name for himself on Music Row, and they anxiously awaited the release of this new hot single at radio now. Compared to Travis Tritt and a few other ‘outlaw’ Country singers, Jeremy Phifer will stand with any major artist in the industry today. He is the best kept secret in Paris, Texas. There’s a new outlaw in town, and his name is Jeremy Phifer. Remember it, because you will hear it again and again. CINDY LEE ALDEN & NATHAN STANLEY “Me & God” Tempo: MEDIUM HMG Nashville IC Vol. 201 Cindy Lee Alden started off the New Year with a single from her new upcoming album His Royal Stamp. It is a cover of Country artist Josh Turner’s hit song “Me & God.” The original version featured Dr. Ralph Stanley trading verses with Josh Turner. Nathan Stanley, Dr. Ralph Stanley’s grandson, lends crisp, solid vocals to the current duet with Alden, whose own vocals are clean and pleasing to the ear. Alden’s “Me & God” is sure to be a favorite of Inspirational Country fans and radio. The blend of Alden and Stanley’s voices gives this song an overall smooth sound. The simplicity of the lyrics and the catchy melody will have you singing along … This is a great version of a popular song, ask for it at radio. 56 April 2014 JENNIFER NICKERSON “Keep On Keepin On” Tempo: UPBEAT HMG Nashville Country Vol. 57 Dallas native Jennifer Nickerson is back and better than ever with her new single “Keep On Keepin On.” This is a great ‘feel good song’ about real life. “Keep On Keepin On” is also going to cross over into the Country genre. Jennifer will be promoted to the Music Row charts starting in early 2014 as well as Inspirational Country. Jennifer Nickerson is a new light in the darkness. She seems to spread hope wherever she sings. God calls people for different things in life, and Jennifer has a call of God that goes above and beyond. She is a singer-songwriter, who is working on taking her music career to the next level. Best wishes to Jennifer. ROSS DAIGLE – “All I Owe” Tempo: MEDIUM HMG Nashville IC Vol. 202 Ross Daigle, who once made music in Baton Rouge, now makes music in Nashville. An original songwriter, producer, instrumentalist and onetime worship leader, Ross has been performing since he was 15, and, in his ministry, he has traveled the US and the world. Now as a husband and father of two, he has spent the last 10 years developing his songwriting in a way to make the Gospel of Jesus Christ widely known and non-ignorable without putting off the hearer. Ross blends a unique Americana flair with unpredictable Rock riffs, solos and even tinges of Bluegrass and Country, making him versatile when it comes to crossover sounds. His latest EP, On The Journey, tells a heartfelt story of God’s incredible mercy and acceptance of sinners into His family while also asking why bad things happen to those He loves. “All I Owe” is an exuberant praise to Christ, who by His blood has forgiven the debt of sin for any who believes. Ross stays busy as a luthier (guitar maker), but he spends time with family and friends, along with writing and sharing his music with everyone. PowerSourceMagazine.com PowerSource 04_14_PowerSource 04_14 3/11/14 4:28 PM Page 57 JIM ANTHONY “Who Do You Think” Tempo: MEDIUM HMG Nashville IC Vol. 202 Singer-songwriter Jim Anthony is a Minnesota native and Nashville recording artist with seven critically acclaimed albums and a string of performance and songwriting accolades that reflect a fifteenyear music career … and he’s just getting started. Lately, Jim has been hard at work releasing an album each of the last three years while regularly playing churches, fairs, festivals and conferences. “Who Do You Think” is a song that reflects on the selfless acts we commit for the benefit of those we love. This song thoughtfully walks the listener through a series of sacrificial examples beginning with the loving acts of a mother who devotes her life to her family expecting nothing in return; then, moves on to a husband who puts his life on the line for his wife. “Who Do You Think” appropriately ends by highlighting the perfect example of sacrificial giving: Christ’s death on the cross. KALEE HRIC “If Jesus Was From Nashville” Tempo: MEDIUM HMG Nashville Country Vol. 57 Give “If Jesus Was From Nashville” a listen; it’s Kalee’s latest radio release from her new album You’re Not In The WIND. It’s a fun Inspirational Song! It’s a crossover and signature song for Kalee. It is a little tongue-in-cheek and unusual! You’ll know right away that this is a fun song. “I get such a huge response from this song in my live performances,” expressed Kalee, “more than any other song!” It’s a catchy sing-a-long song that will make the listener want to hear it again and again! THE WALKING WOUNDED FEATURING DOUG STOKES “If That Ring Could Talk” Tempo: MEDIUM HMG Nashville Country Vol. 57 The Walking Wounded featuring Doug Stokes has released another incredible Inspirational Country song with family values to radio. The song was co-written by Dave Schumacher and Doug Stokes. Dave believes too many people today do not have respect for the wedding ring. He feels the ring is a sacred thing and it is a symbolic representation of the marriage covenant and the lifetime commitment between a man and a woman before God. He says that people are a gift to one another, handpicked and given to each other by God and should be treated as such in a marriage by being loyal and faithful to each other for life. “People today seem to take marriage too lightly and get divorced over the least little thing,” says Dave. “God will help them work through their difficulties and the marriage will come out even stronger if they will just be patient and commit to sticking it out." PowerSourceMusic.com Promotions BECKY MOORE – “Lay It Down” Tempo: SLOW HMG Adult/Contemporary Single Becky Moore is a talented artist who recently released her single “Lay It Down.” The lyrics to this song mirrors Becky’s life journey of learning to lay down her own expectations and trusting that the Lord will make His Way glaringly obvious. Becky’s Country roots and Gospel Soul create a compelling sound. Raised singing in churches throughout the south, Becky’s artistry comes straight from her heart. Her love of Country music and the spirit of the “silver-lined” life, that soulful Country music inherently possesses, has always had a magnetic pull for Becky. She doesn’t just have the heart to sing big songs; she also has the voice to sing them with excellence. Music has and will always be the best way for Becky to share her mission, which is to take each listener’s focus off of their troubles and point them towards the healing power of Christ Jesus. MURPHY ELMORE “Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time” Tempo: MEDIUM HMG Nashville Country Vol. 57 Raised in Short Creek, Alabama, a small town just outside of the Hueytown and Oak Grove communities, Murphy Elmore began playing the guitar and writing songs at age 15. While developing his love for writing, Murphy became one of the Praise & Worship leaders at his home church. He then attended the University Of Alabama, where, during his sophomore year, he decided to pursue his passion for singing and songwriting. Getting his inspiration from life events, Murphy has written several songs, and is still writing. He has recorded an EP, and his first single is an original, “Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time,” stemming from a banter with a very good friend of his, and a place in his hometown where friends gather. Her music has helped her to get through many challenges throughout her life. Recently, she was diagnosed with some visual disorders that affect the way she perceives and processes writing. These disorders are believed to be a result of her premature birth; she faces more testing and therapy to try to correct the disorders. In Emily’s words, “Many face challenges but it doesn’t mean that I should look for special favors, because others have challenges that are greater than mine. Instead I want to be an example to others facing challenges to never allow their challenges to affect their goals and dreams.” The most appropriate song release off of her new CD Oklahoma Dreams is titled “Wings On Our Dreams.” This song speaks to her very situation. As the lyrics state, “All God’s children yearn to fly/ Burn their names across the sky/ One sweet moment will all rise/Above these earthly things/ When we grow wings on our dreams.” JOE LOFTUS “Can't Take The US From The USA” Tempo: MEDIUM HMG Nashville Country Vol. 57 Joe Loftus has been singing for over five decades and has written over 80 songs. After serving in Viet Nam, he and his brother played music around hundreds of campfires. In 1980, he entered an alcohol treatment center where he encountered God's love which freed him from addiction and gave him the inspiration to begin writing songs. One of Joe’s passions is to bring joy to the elderly. Since retiring as a pipefitter, he sings with a non-profit group that performs at nursing homes. Joe and his wife Jane live in Hudson, Wisconsin. “Little Hands Little Feet” Tempo: SLOW HMG Nashville Inspirational Country Single The secong single release from Joe Loftus is “Little Hands Little Feet,” from his latest CD Can’t Take The US From The USA. God planted this urge in me to write this song and the words just flowed onto the paper.” Joe adds, “After recording the song back in September, I finally met this little girl, now 30, who just had her own baby.” This heartwarming tune is sure to become a favorite among listeners.
