Congress field trip (Wednesday 12)
Field trip includes a visit to Río Grande river valley (16 de Octubre Valley), the area having the
highest incidence of Phytophthora austrocedrae. It is a 39-km trip (about 45 minutes) from
Esquel, going through Trevelin town, to “Nant y Fall Cascades” protected area. Along the trip the
impact of the disease at landscape can be observed. The aim of this visit is to see the
symptomatology and progression of the disease at stand and individual tree levels, as well as a
panoramic view of the valley and the diseased forests. The beautiful cascades surrounded by
Austrocedrus chilensis and Nothofagus dombeyi trees can also be appreciated.
The trip continues to Los Alerces National Park (55 km), along winding Route 71 which runs
through the valley . Once in Los Alerces National Park, we will enjoy an “asado criollo” (traditional
barbecue), as well as a variety of vegetables for those who prefer v egetarian food. After lunch,
we will visit different areas of the park to see some of the main touristic attractions, including
Nothofagus forest, healthy and diseased Austrocedrus forests, native flora and fauna, lakes,
streams, etc.

OPTIONAL PRE-CONGRESS FIELD TRIP
Saturday 8 November: Isla Victoria (Victoria Island)
Victoria Island is known for the introduction of many exotic woody plants from different continents, especially
during the 1920s and 1930s. It is believed that P. austrocedrae was introduced in the island in asymptomatic
infected exotic plants and was dispersed to other areas through infected seedlings produced in the forest nursery
of the island, that were distributed all over Patagonia.
The tour begins at Puerto Pañuelo, 25 km out of Bariloche town, opposite to the historic Hotel Llao Llao. After a
30-minute sailing, Isla Victoria is reached where there are marked trails to walk along. The most outstanding
walks are to the former National Nursery, to Port Gross and old settlement, to cave paintings and Playa del Toro,
and to the Balcony on Cerro Bella Vista. Along the walks old plantations of exotic trees from all over the world can
be seen, as well as Austrocedrus chilensis forests affected by P. austrocedrae. It will also be the opportunity to see
individuals of some exotic species susceptible to P. austrocedrae as Juniperus communis and Chamaecyparis
lawsoniana. The tour continues by boat to Peninsula Quetrihué where there is another major attraction - Los
Arrayanes National Park - named after its unique forest of the Mytaceae Luma apiculata (Arrayán). A walk leads
through the magical atmosphere of magnificent Arrayán trees, 500-600 years old, growing over 15 meters tall,
with their thick cinnamon-colored bark.
Back to the hotel in Bariloche at about 6PM, there will be free time in the evening.
Sunday 9 November
Starting from Bariloche at 9 AM, a 300 km bus ride to Esquel, making stops at places of interest. Along the road,
magnificent views of lakes and Patagonian forests can be enjoyed. There will be a visit to El Bolsón town, located
in a beautiful valley, where wealthy and diseased A. chilensis forests can be observed, as well as Pinus spp.
plantations affected by Sirex noctilio.
The trip then continues to Esquel, through Los Alerces National Park, where different native forest sanitary
problems will be observed, such as Nothofagus dombeyi and Austrocedrus chilensis mortality, as well as other
plant diseases.
Also many panoramic places will be visited where magnificent lakes, rivers, glaciers and forests can be viewed.
Pre-congress field trip includes:
- 2 nights of accommodation in Bariloche (Friday 7 and Saturday 8 November).
- Tour to Isla Victoria
- Travel and Tour from Bariloche to Esquel visiting El Bolsón town and Los Alerces National Park.
- Breakfast and lunch of both days.

volcano's boiler. There are also paleontological and archaeological attractions, many fossil fields, as
well as almost 5000-year-old cave painting sites.

Nothofagus forests and diseased Austrocedrus chilensis. Arrayanes river, named after Arrayán tree,
is a unique spot where visitors are delighted to discover the incredibly green river water together
with typical fauna and flora. After crossing the hanging bridge on Arrayanes river and a 20 -minute
walk along a trail parallel to Menendez river, Chucao little harbor is reached, where a wonderful
boat trip starts across Menéndez lake. Along the sailing, visitors enjoy magnificent views of
