OUT AND ABOUT WATERFORD FARM Waterford Farm is lucky enough to have free-roaming wildlife call this place their home. Not only do we have a huge amount of birdlife but we are also privileged enough to spot large herds of Eland as we drive around the farm. Monde and his Boerperd gelding Legend- having some fun. There are numerous creatures, big and small, to be found at the farmyard at Waterford. FEATURED HORSE This month we will focus on a featured breed rather than an individual horse. The American Curly (otherwise known as the Bashkir Curly) is a rare breed and beautiful breed. Here at Waterford Stud, we are lucky enough to have a few of these interesting horses. The origin of the Bashkir Curly breed is highly debatable. It was once thought that they developed from the Russian Bashkir however recent studies have found this to be untrue. The naming of the breed also underwent some scrutiny due to the mystery surrounding its origin. Thus the breed has many titles such as Bashkir Curly, American Bashkir Curly, North American Curly or just Curly Horse The most recent findings in the States, using DNA testing, shows that the Curly is not a distinct breed but a cross between many breeds such-mainly Quarter Horse and Morgan. The coat of a Curly Horse is its most distinguishing feature. It is hypoallergenic- meaning that people, who are allergic to horses, can tolerate the hair from this specific breed. Curly Horses are known to be intelligent and calm natured. They have particularly hard hooves and thus good for riding in rocky mountains. They come in all sizes, shapes and colours. Waterford Rubic. This is a 2 year old American Curly filly that was bred by Waterford Stud. This is a 4 year old American Curly geldingWaterford Afro.
