Fifty Years as a Parish in the Lower Blue Mountains
30 Aug 2015
22nd Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year B,
Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8; Psalm 14; James 1:17-18, 21-22,27; Mark 7:1-8,14-15, 21-23
The Pharisees were considered devout men who seemed to practise their religion intensely in
every possible way they could, but looked down on others who were different from them. They
looked at them with contempt and distanced themselves from the Gentiles as well as lax Jews
who were less observant of the law. They were arrogant in their beliefs and close minded.
In today’s Gospel we see them coming to hear Jesus. They begin to criticise the behaviour of his
disciples, wanting to discredit Jesus and his teachings. They charged the disciples of Jesus for
eating without washing their hands, thus breaking the tradition and the law of Moses.
The Pharisees and Scribes were people who were sunk in their self-righteousness. They had no
integrity and their interior and personal relationship with God was limited to external show.
They were people who were proud of their good deeds in a wrong way.
Jesus disapproves of this kind of behaviour and tells us to avoid such an attitude to religion.
Jesus is not against the law but against the absence of mercy and compassion in the hearts of the
Pharisees and Scribes. He tells us to look beyond the letter of the law. He calls us to be people of
pure hearts. What does matter to God, according to Jesus, is what is in our hearts and what
comes out from our hearts.
May good things continue to come out from our hearts, especially reaching out to the poor, the
needy and broken who need our compassion and understanding. Nothing that brings discredit,
contempt, pain, sorrow or misery to another should ever come from our hearts or mouths. May
our every word or action be directed towards uplifting and strengthening the weak and the lonely.
May they be a real reflection of our bond with the heavenly Father. In that way, we can all be
vigilant and watchful that our religious practices will not be the imitation of the Pharisees
and Scribes. Fr Jolly Chacko MS

THE FLAME OF MINISTRY AND SERVICE:
……...in Word or Deed….
Whether our service is in word or in deed, it is a
religious duty for all Christians. Whether we are
ordained or not, we are all called to serve the Lord
by serving one another. In community, we are
called to minister to one another, to the church to
the Gospel and to the Lord. God has given each of
us a ministry. Today’s morning tea is a celebration
of the many ministries here at St. Finbar’s.
Please come and celebrate!

PARISH POTTED HISTORY 14 Did you know? The Years of World War II
In 1942 the central area of Glenbrook was finally connected to the water supply from Linden. During the
war years there was a noticeable increase in population in Glenbrook, Blaxland and some in Warrimoo. The
Lapstone Hotel (now the RAAF Base) existed but, except for a very few houses, Lapstone suburb had not
begun, its birth being in 1954. Mt Riverview held a farm and little else. Its time would come in the early
1960s. Rail travel was still by steam engine. Social efforts during war years were mainly associated with supporting
the serving troops, the Red Cross, and Prisoners of War, and praying for locals who had joined up.
In 1944 St Finbar’s Church escaped the ravages of a terrible bushfire that engulfed Glenbrook, where house tanks
were dry, the piped water ‘supply’ failed, and the town only equipped with elementary fire fighting equipment.
During the years of WWII the Glenbrook Catholic Community continued its usual practice of Mass each Sunday at
9.30am; prayed for peace and return of loved ones from war; mourned the deaths of pioneers and stalwarts like
Mr & Mrs Venn and Mr Nolan; and participated in the happy 25 th Anniversary of Springwood Parish in 1944.
Following the end of WWII, the year 1946 for Glenbrook and surrounds, like all places in Australia, was a year of
recuperation, adjustment, and ongoing resource shortages and rationing. It was also a chance for change. In 1946
Glenbrook Catholics said farewell to Fr Galvin and welcomed Fr Thomas Leen as Parish Priest for the next 16 years.

PARISH FINANCE COMMITTEE
In accordance with Diocesan policy, St Finbar’s
has now split the Parish Advisory Committee
(PAC) into two separate entities, namely the
Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) and the Parish
Finance Committee (PFC).
The PFC held its first meeting during the week
and Carl Moll was elected to the Chair.
The meeting spent time understanding the
nature of our parish finances and the many steps
Fr Jolly has put into place, or is planning to put
into place, to reduce our expenditure. The
Committee also agreed to look towards
developing some financial goals for the parish,
and to report regularly to the parishioners.
