The Barra - St Finbar`s
The Barra Weekly Newsletter of St Finbar’s Catholic Parish, Glenbrook Fifty Years of Ministry in the Lower Mountains 26 April 2015 Fourth Sunday of Easter, Year B Acts 3:13-15, 17-19; Psalm 4:2; 1 John 2:1-5; Luke 24:35-48 Fourth Sunday of Easter - Year B Sunday, 26 April 2015 This Sunday is traditionally known as Good Shepherd Sunday. Two major themes emerge from the readings: an image of the one who saves; and the power of salvation itself. The one who saves is not a mighty warrior who comes in military array. In fact, he is the one who was rejected, who was hunted down, humiliated, tortured and hung naked on a tree, there to die in shame. The one who saves is the cornerstone of the building, holding it together, forming a firm foundation so that the structure will not collapse. The one who saves is a lowly shepherd, entrusted with sheep, not with the affairs of state. The one who saves is an unlikely saviour. This characterisation should give us pause. Is it possible that we have been looking for a saviour in the wrong places? God’s saving power flows from steadfast covenant love. It broke open the world in the death and resurrection of Jesus and it overflows as healing grace. The saving power in the name of Jesus, a name that itself means ‘saviour’ (cf. Matt 1:21), is for all people, even for those sheep who do not yet belong to this fold. Furthermore, it is for all time; God’s mercy endures forever. Through our baptism we can bring the saving grace of God to a world in desperate need of healing. We can do this in our families, in our local communities, in the workplace, in so many situations of our lives. We remember with gratitude, the countless many, those living and those now in glory, who established and fostered our parish faith community. We celebrate your call to us, each as one, and as families in Christ, to be a welcoming community for all; to worship together, to proclaim your word, and to respond to human needs. We believe that your Spirit of Love will deepen in us as we go forward, our faith in Christ Jesus, who lived among us, died, was raised up, and who will come again. Faithful God, on this Golden Jubilee we, your beloved people in St. Finbar’s, entrust ourselves to You, renewing ourselves in faith, hope and love for Your greater honour and glory. ST FINBAR’S ADULT EDUCATION “Our place in the Universe Story: recovering a sense of the sacred” Presented by Sister Margaret Tomlinson After more than 30 years teaching theology and spirituality at ACU, Margaret now works with groups in the area of cosmology, ecology and theology. Date: Tuesday, 12th May, 2015 Time: 7.30 pm – 9.30 pm Venue: St Finbar’s Parish Hall FREE - just turn up “I can tell others about Jesus even when it is hard”. It was great to see a small but committed crowd turn out last Sunday night. Edge: talked about prayer and using a Pope Francis' 5 finger prayer and an adaption of perpetual prayer where you dedicate each hour (or in our case each 5 minute block) of undertaking a task to an intention. We prayed our time away while working on a little project for the playgroup. Lounge: had a 'blast' catching up with each other and playing some games. Next Lounge will be a 'Living below the poverty line' challenge following on from the refugee night. If any Loungers are willing to participate in this challenge for real please get in contact with one of the Youth Team (Troy Gordon, Claire Brown, Connor Isaksen, Liam Isaksen, Nicole Young, Joelle Khnouf, Stephen or Natalie Darby) as this will impact on the session. For more information please visit this link: https://www.livebelowtheline.com.au/ And information on Oaktree (the organisation behind the challenge) We already have a couple of people willing to do it from 4th to 8th May. Let us know if you'd like to join the St Finbar Youth team so we can pool our money and purchase our food together for this challenge.
