Saturday 20 August at 12.30-1.30pm, we’ll be kicking Children's Book Week off with a fun family book trivia – there’ll be a great little prize at the end for taking part! Bookings are essential. Friday 26 August at 4.30-5.30pm - Children’s Book Week Parade on , so if the kids you would like to give your costume a second outing you can visit the library! Parking Brisbane residential areas have parking rules in place to ensure parked or stopped vehicles do not affect local access or traffic flow. Parking illegally can be frustrating for neighbours and the community who may be prevented from accessing their home or local area. Drivers must not park on or across a driveway or prevent access to a property. This includes parking in your own driveway outside of the property boundary. Parking in this manner restricts pedestrian access and can reduce visibility for other road users. Page 1 School News Newsletter Edition 26, Week 5 Page 2 School News BOOK WEEK ACTIVITIES AT WONDALL Each year, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators. Classroom teachers, teacher librarians and public librarians develop activities, offer competitions and tell stories relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading. Book Week for 2016 runs 19 AUG - 26 AUG and the theme this year is “Australia: Story Country”. In the library, Mrs Bryant will be reading the short listed books from the picture book section to years 1-3 and the students will be voting to decide which book they think deserves the GOLD sticker for picture book of the year. We will compare our votes with the winning books chosen by the Children’s Book Council of Australia. Books for older children short-listed in the CBCA book of the Year competition will be displayed for a week and then made available for borrowing. On Monday 22nd AUGUST students can dress up for book week and wear story character costumes to a special whole school assembly at 2pm. A colouring competition will be organized and prizes (books, of course) will be given. Newsletter Edition 26, Week 5 Page 3 School News To launch this year’s Book Week, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (Queensland Branch) has organized a community event for families: Saturday – 20 August 2016, between 10:00am and 1:00pm Join the Queensland Branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia, local children's authors and illustrators, and members of the Brisbane Illustrators Group and Write Links at the State Library of Queensland for a series of specially curated activities for children, young people and their families to celebrate the beginning of 2016 Book Week. In the Knowledge Walk, help to create characters and images for two stories written especially for the occasion by Queensland writers. Children will learn about character development and elements of story creation, as well as learning and practising sketching, drawing, colouring, and painting. Join in the fun with storytelling sessions by local picture book authors and illustrators who will be discussing the stories behind the stories, teaching children about how books are developed and put together. There will be illustrators from the storytelling sessions demonstrating their skills using both traditional and digital methods. Watch them demonstrate how they developed their characters from the stories that will share in the storytelling sessions. Children will learn about the illustration process; the tools and techniques illustrators use; and the process of book creation. The BIG draw is proudly presented by the Queensland Branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia, in partnership with the State Library of Queensland and Book Links (QLD) Inc. This is a free event. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC: SENIOR BAND REMINDER SENIOR BAND STUDENTS- The Intermediate Camp (WAMMM) forms are due back BY Friday August 19th. Numbers may be limited for this event as there are a very large number of students eligible due to the offering being made to both year 5 and year 6 students. Please get your forms in soon! The last few weeks have been very busy for our Senior Instrumental Students. On Sunday 7th we performed for a very appreciative crowd at “Bands in the Park” at the Manly waterfront and markets. Stall holders loved the lovely sounds floating around their stalls and made several very positive comments! Some were even seen dancing! The Senior Band also performed in the Senior Band section of the Redlands Eisteddfod competing against 6 other bands, some containing players who had been playing up to 2.5 years (ours have only played for 1.5 years). There were many bands in the section and we managed to obtain a highly successful 3rd place. This is a major achievement and Special Congratulations go to all those who performed for this event. A number of ensembles also performed at the same Eisteddfod 2 weeks earlier and we came away with 1st place ( congratulations to Lily, Ella, Bree, Maddox, Caitlin, Shritik, Lochlan and Olivia) and 3 rd place (congratulations to Alina, Elyse, Jackson, Shritik, Caitlin, Quinn and Maddox). We also achieved 2 Highly Commended awards and an encouragement award. Well Done to all students who prepared and presented music for this event.
