BELOW: Charles chose durable leather for the dogs' bed steps to stand up to pet hair and four-legged traffic. BOTTOM: Charles and his Cavaliers Pampered Pooches Legendary Tulsa interior designer Charles Faudree proves that living with dogs can be done in style hen posed the question "Whom do you love more, your dogs or your sister?" Charles Faudree tactfully replies, "Both. Equally." The dog-loving designer, best known for his French-inspired style, has designed rooms all over the world and recently published his fifth book, Charles Faudree Details (Gibbs Smith), but his most precious clients are at home. Charles has shared his home with 48 SOUTHERN LIVING OCTOBER 2011 Cavalier King Charles spaniels for the last 30 years and today lives with Lila and Ruby. He caters to his dogs just as he would his best clients-addressing their needs without sacrificing style or comfort. Here are two of our favorite ideas for keeping tails wagging. Hidden Foyer (above left) Rather than have a not-so-pretty doggy door in open view, Charles placed his dog door inside the lower cabinet of his library bookshelves. When guests visit or he wants Lila and Ruby to ~ LOVE IT? GET IT! PAGE stay indoors, he can simply shut the cabinet. The compartment is lined with leopard-print carpet so when the dogs have been outside, they can wipe their feet before entering the house. Bed Steps (top right) An extra-tall bed isn't a problem for the petite spaniels. Dale Gillman of Tulsa's Antique Warehouse repurposed an antique French chair into handsome dog steps. Shortening the chair legs and turning the seat into a step lets the dogs come and go as they please. ~ 139 r-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BYZOE GOWEN ----
