Guide
Your Total Solution Provider
Electrical current stops the beating heart of more than
140 construction workers each year. More than half
of the electrocutions were caused by direct or indirect
contact with live equipment and wiring, and a third
of the deaths were due to contact with overhead
power lines, according to the Electronic Library
of Construction Occupational Safety and Health.
Electricians run the highest risk for electrocution out
of all the construction trades, and about 350 electricalrelated deaths occur each year. Many of these deaths,
however, could have been avoided through proper
lockout/tagout procedures, working in a de-energized
condition, and following proper safety procedures.
To make sure you and your coworkers go home safely
at the end of each work day, you need the right tools
to get the job done. WESCO is here to help. With more
than 475 full-service Branches in North America and
overseas, we have the products and technology to keep
you safe out in the field. We maintain relationships

Electrical Glove Testing
WESCO now has a competitive electrical equipment
testing service through Conney Safety Products!
Per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.137 Electrical Protective Devices, electrically
insulated gloves must be tested every 6 months once issued for service
or if tested but have not been put into service in the previous 12
months (Table I-6 - Rubber Insulating Equipment Test Intervals).
This means that the majority of the insulating gloves you are selling
from Salisbury must be retested at 6-month intervals for the life of the
gloves! The good news? Once customers use the Conney Safety Program,
they rarely use a different provider and the orders are nearly automatic!
WESCO glove testing service includes the following:
s Visual Inspection — Gloves will be stretched and folded
to find unacceptable surface irregularities
s Air Test — Gloves will be filled with air to identify holes
s Electrical Test — Gloves will be subjected
to appropriate level of electricity, depending on glove classification
s Cleaning/Dusting — Gloves will be cleaned
and glove dust applied
s Performance Report — A detailed performance report
will accompany your glove shipment
Other testing services include hot sticks, blankets, sleeves, mats,
and line hoses. Contact [email protected] or go online to
www.conney.com/electricaltesting for more information.
Did you know?
Leather protectors should be replaced
when they are soiled with dirt, grease,
oils, and/or have embedded objects,
cuts, tears, or other blemishes that may
compromise the safety of the gloves.

Cooper Bussmann® workplace safety.
V Cooper Bussmann Services
Arc Flash Studies: OSHA recognizes NFPA 70E to help mitigate the effects
of arc flash on worker safety. Cooper Bussmann is an expert at implementing
this standard in your facility. We will work from a short circuit and coordination
analysis to determine critical data for your approach and flash protection
boundaries, as required by NFPA 70E. From this, we will identify the hazard risk
category and define the personal protective equipment (PPE) levels
for safely performing work on electrical panels.
Training: As technology and codes evolve and new personnel join your
operation, Cooper Bussmann Training Services can provide the knowledge to
maximize your productivity and protection. Whether on-site training seminars or
technical publications, Cooper Bussmann Services can provide the right training
when and where you need it — while you stay focused on your business.

The 3 R’s of the Low-Peak® Fuse Reduction Plan.
V Cooper Bussmann Low-Peak Upgrade
1. Reduce Downtime: Cooper Bussmann Low-Peak time-delay current-limiting
fuses offer superior protection against short-circuit faults that can destroy motors
and motor starters, and save long downtime and replacing costly equipment.
2. Reduce Inventory: Low-Peak fuses can reduce inventory by replacing multiple
SKUs; save investment and maintenance expenses on that inventory.
3. Reduce Arc Flash Hazard: The current-limiting feature of all Cooper
Bussmann Low-Peak fuses assures minimum incident energy should an arc
flash occur, thereby not only reducing the arc flash
hazard, but also potentially reducing the level
of PPE. The Cooper Bussmann Class J, LPJ Series
of fuses provide the best current limitation.

V Remote Power Racking
Unit (RPR-2)
Eaton’s RPR-2 provides a means of remotely
racking power circuit breakers that utilize the
rotation of a shaft for insertion and removal.
The person can be 25 feet or more away from
the switchgear door during the racking process.
This allows personnel to wear a lower level
of PPE (increased worker comfort and mobility)
while operating the RPR-2 from an increased
distance from the breaker. Since personnel
can be outside the flash protection boundary
while operating the RPR-2, the circuit breaker
door does not have to be closed during the
racking process.

Prevent lost-time injuries.
V Pass & Seymour® Ground Continuity Monitoring
Plugs & Connectors
Give safety the green light — and hazardous conditions the red light. Pass &
Seymour® Straight Blade and Turnlok® Ground Continuity Monitoring (GCM) plugs
and connectors indicate power status, monitor ground continuity, and warn of
other hazardous conditions such as a miswire, open hot or neutral conductor,
or hot/ground reversal. Multiple, dual-color LEDs speed troubleshooting, so you
know in an instant if there’s a problem — no need to wait for a scheduled test.
That means significantly reduced risk of job-site injury. And the longer you use
them, the greater the chances they’ll prevent a lost-time injury.
Moreover, Pass & Seymour® GCM Plugs & Connectors save time and labor
whenever you install them, thanks for a full range of quick-install features like
keyed housings and backed-out terminal screws. Put P&S Ground Continuity
Monitoring Plugs & Connectors to work for you — and get enhanced safety
and productivity.

Shut out water and dirt from your electrical system.
V Pass & Seymour® Pin & Sleeve Devices
There’s no better protection against moisture and industrial contaminants than
P&S IEC Pin & Sleeve products. With spring-loaded covers, locking rings, and
neoprene gaskets, everything from water to dirt is completely shut out of the
electrical system — even if the connection is accidentally submerged.
All P&S Watertight Pin & Sleeve plugs, connectors, receptacles, and inlets bring
you the features to enhance versatility, reliability, and safety. For example, North
American products come completely ready to wire, for quick, simple installation.
And all feature impact- and chemical-resistant thermoplastic construction.
Shrouded, nickel-plated, solid-brass pins provide corrosion protection and
excellent conductivity. And an exclusive, hinged cord grip eliminates loose parts
that get lost.
With a complete range of choices rated from 20 to 100 amps, you’ll find a
Legrand® works-for-you solution for every Pass & Seymour® Pin & Sleeve device
application in and around your plant.

Electrical Safety Tips...
Use insulated tools when working on live electrical circuits.
A current that is 10 mA can paralyze muscles. If an
electrician is working with non-insulated tools, he or she
will not be able to release the tool when shocked, resulting
in longer shock exposure.
Perform the proper lockout/tagout procedures to protect
yourself and your coworkers from electrocution.
Properly label your electrical equipment so all
the workers are aware of any shock hazards.
Wear personal protective equipment such as flameretardant clothing, face shields, and insulated gloves
to keep you safe in the event of an arc flash.
Send your gloves out for inspection every six months to make
sure that they are properly rated to protect against an arc flash.
Turn off the power and unplug any equipment when connecting or disconnecting test leads.
Use clip leads or solder temporary wires to reach cramped locations or difficult-to-reach areas.
All pull boxes, junction boxes, and fittings shall be provided with covers. Metal covers must be grounded.
Maintain proper work distances and wear rubber gloves when working on overhead power lines.
Equipment rated for dry, indoor locations should not be used outdoors.
Make sure extension and flexible cords are in good working condition. Wear and tear can loosen or expose
wires, exposing you to electrical current. Cords that are modified or not designed for hard usage can also
be hazardous.
Do not use flexible wiring in situations requiring long-term electrical supply.
Do not use cords or tools with worn insulation or exposed wires.
Do not use circuit breakers or fuses without the proper rating for overcurrent protection.
Do not use modified cords or tools or remove ground prongs, face plates, or insulation. Do not attach
ungrounded, two-prong adapter plugs to three-prong cords and tools.
Inspect all electrical equipment before use. If equipment has frayed cords, missing ground prongs, or cracked
tool casings, take it out of service immediately. Apply a warning tag to the tool and do not use it until the
problem is corrected.
Isolate live electrical parts to prevent exposure.
Use GFCIs and overcurrent protection devices to protect against shocking currents in circuits.
Use insulation to prevent exposure to live wires and parts.
Avoid overloading wires by selecting the right size and type for the job.
Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late to Find Out if Your Workplace Is Properly Protected.
The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) created the How Do You Know? program, sponsored by
WESCO, to provide a tool for managers and employees to develop a proactive approach to electrical safety
by determining the effectiveness of the current safety practices they have in place. Available for free on ESFI’s
website, How Do You Know? features the Electrical Safety Self-Assessment tool to help safety professionals
review and analyze their company’s electrical safety practices related to facilities, personnel, and procedures,
and a complementary video series reinforces the importance of electrical safety programs and compliance
with standards and regulations.
Once the assessment is complete, respondents can visit ESFI’s website for a library of safety
resources and links to help find the information required to take the next step. Don’t wait until
it is too late to assess your electrical safety program. Visit www.esfi.org for more information
on How Do You Know? and for ESFI’s comprehensive collection of electrical safety resources.
