Success for Former Local Cricketer
Former Holbrook cricketer Steve Taylor has been in good
form with his Darwin club Waratahs which culminated in
the young skipper leading his team to a solid victory in the
local top end one day final last year in August. Taylor was
the star for his side, taking 3/34 with the ball, before scoring
with 41 not out to lead the Waratahs to a comfortable
victory.
Since leaving Holbrook, where Steve was Senior Cricketer
of the Year in 2007/08, he played with the Lavington
Cricket Club before moving to Melbourne to play for the
Northcote Club, of which he is now also captain.
After the Melbourne season finishes, Steve heads up to
Darwin for the Northern ‘Day Season’ to lead the Waratahs
Club, and also do some fishing!
Steve also represented the Northern Territory for three
consecutive years. He was selected as captain, against South
Australia, leading them to victory in 2013. Steve is now
heading off to England where he will join Mildenhall cricket
side in Suffolk County near Cambridge for the April to
September season.

Hamish Mackinlay’s (44) and Bailey Parker (26) laid the platform with a quick fire 58 run second wicket
partnership. Corey McCarthy (16), Jake Hicks, Dammon Brennan and Cooper Walsh occupied the crease for
important periods of time, enabling Holbrook to bat out their 40 overs.
The Rock was in early trouble when they lost opener Allan Malmo to a sharp slip catch by Hamish Mackinlay
off Bailey Parker’s third ball of the day. The catch was to be Mackinlay’s first of four important slips catches for
the innings. The Holbrook boys bowled extremely well, keeping pressure on The Rock eventually bowling them
out for 70 runs in the 27th over. Bowling figures: Bailey Parker (8 overs-1 maiden-3 wickets for 17 runs),
Hamish Mackinlay (5-0-0 for 13), Jake Hicks (4-0-2 for 8), Cooper Walsh (4.3-2- 4 for 9), Corey McCarthy (3-1
-1 for 13) and Dammon Brennan (1-0-0 for 5). In what was a fine all round team effort, Hamish Mackinlay was
voted man of the match. All players are to be congratulated on the consistent season they produced and the
improvement they have displayed in their cricket skills.

HOLBROOK LANDCARE
S2S Bushlinks project is presenting two workshops
and forays with renowned photographer and fungi
expert Alison Pouliot. The first workshop, Fungi: An
Introduction to a Curious Kingdom, will be held at
Wenoma Studio Tumbarumba on Sunday 22 March at
10am, and will introduce participants to the diversity,
ecology and curiosities of the fungi kingdom. The
second workshop, The Bizarre and the Beautiful—A
Deeper Exploration of a Curious Kingdom, will be
held at Mullengandra Hall on Monday 23 March and
will take participants deeper into the fungi kingdom
with a close look at the major characteristics used to
identify fungi in the field. RSVP by Wednesday 18

possible by funding from the Australian Government.

Social Support & Seniors Week
A busy week this week for Seniors Week! Holbrook Social Support has two outings planned. On Tuesday 17th
March we headed to the Regent Cinema in Albury to watch “The Second Best Marigold Hotel” and had lunch at
the Astor Hotel. Then on Thursday we are off to Wagga Civic Theatre to See DENISE DRYSDALE live. We
will enjoy morning tea at the theatre before the performance and lunch afterwards. If you want to join us for any
outings give us a call on 6036 3677. All seniors are welcome!
We are also commencing a MENS ONLY social group. The first outing will be on Thursday 26 March. We will
be taking a “tourist drive” through the district and head to Jingellic Pub for lunch and perhaps some fishing if
anyone wants to through a line in! Plans are that the group will be self-led and attend or participate in activities
that the group members are interested in. Men (over the age of 65) who may be interested in joining us are
welcome to give us a call. Transport will be provided and we will also provide a carer if required. Suggestions
for future activities and trips are welcome!
If you would like to be part of our new MENS ONLY group (or know someone who might) please give us a call
at the office on 6036 3677 and we will let you know what’s happening.
ANGLICAN NEWS
This Sunday (22 March) we are holding our annual Harvest Festival Thanksgiving Service. This is a time
when we give thanks to God for all the good things he gives us. The church looks beautiful as we place lots of
fresh produce at the front during the service. Afterwards we take everything into the church hall for a fun
auction, with proceeds being given to support Christian ministry in remote Australia and other parts of the
world. All are welcome – 9:30am.
The following Saturday (28 March – Election Day) is our Men’s Breakfast. We have a speaker from the
Central Coast who will speak on Jesus’ Leadership. All men welcome at 8am.
Our annual school holiday Kids Club is coming up in the second week of school holidays, from Monday 13
April to Friday 17 April. To book your child in please call James Coats on 6036 2048. It’s available for
children from preschool age through to grade 6.

ST PATRICK’S SCHOOL
St Patricks School students and teachers have been
exploring many new exciting areas of hands-on
learning, such as making ice cream, raising silkworms
and bike safety. Ride2School day saw many students
ride their bikes and scooters to school starting their
day on a healthy note. Senior students enjoyed
coaching the junior student groups on path etiquette,
bike maintenance, and helmet fitting then concluding
with the navigation of an obstacle course.
Congratulations to Hunter Galvin and Ben Parker who
are attending the MacKillop AFL trial on 27 March
2015. Ben also tried out for the Mackillop cricket
team.
We look forward to our cross country in March, those
who excel will attend the Diocesan cross country in
April. Go St Pat’s!
A visit to the school by a 2 day old Ferrari was the
highlight of Thursday last week. Children were able to
sit and admire the lovely car, generously provided by
a well-known Australian businessman.

Riverina Cricket: Congratulations to Ewan
Mackinlay for his selection in the squad of 24 players.

garden club students are doing a fantastic job preparing for the planting season. They have deadheaded the
agapanthus, as well as many other jobs around school. Thank you to the Capell and Swan families for their
donations of herbs, succulents and seeds. P&C 0ews: The AGM will be held on Wednesday, 25 March 2015 at
7.30 pm. All executive positions are vacant and we encourage all interested parents/carers to attend the meeting.
Cross Country Carnival: Our annual Cross Country Carnival will be held on Thursday, 19 March at 10:00 am
on the school oval. All welcome to attend.

Children are curious learners and they LOVE playing in the dirt so
gardening is a fantastic way for kids to learn lessons about the
natural world around them, develop an interest in the food that they
are eating and encourage sustainable practices early on in life.
Gardening helps children to learn and develop new skills:
Responsibility: from caring for plants. Understanding: as they
learn about cause and effect (for example, plants die without water,
weeds compete with plants). Self-confidence: from achieving their
goals and enjoying the food they have grown. Love of nature: a
chance to learn about the outdoor environment in a safe and pleasant
place. Reasoning and discovery: learning about the science of plants, animals, weather, the environment,
nutrition and simple construction. Physical activity: doing something fun and productive. Cooperation:
including shared play activity and teamwork. Creativity: finding new and exciting ways to grow food.

Over the last few months, mums of new babies in Holbrook have been learning all about being
a parent. Intereach has been running a course called Parents As Teachers, in a relaxed environment. This is aimed at parents and their new babies, up to the age of 3. Participants have been
learning about lots about childhood such as; play, how to play with their babies, what to say
and do in play, about communicating with babies, feeding solids and healthy eating, child development and
things to do to help babies’ learning, how babies build a relationship with their parents, guiding babies’ behaviour, how babies brains development, and supports for the whole family. The babies have been learning through
play in fun games with a big cardboard box, a picnic, kicking a noisy can, tummy time, songs and sharing books.
Each Tuesday, from Tuesday 24th March, this group will be running from 10am-12pm at St Clare’s Convent.

COUNCIL NEWS – February 2015
Council held its February meeting at the Culcairn
Office on Wednesday, 11 February 2015. All
councillors attended the meeting.
First up, Council received a presentation from Border
Trust regarding the Greater Hume Community Fund
proposal. Border Trust is seeking a commitment from
each Local Government Area within the Border Trust
region to assist in the establishment of a named sub
fund for their respective communities. It is intended
that these operate in addition to other Border Trust
activities. Each named sub fund will be tailored to suit
the individual circumstances of the different
communities. Council will consider the proposal
during budget preparations in the coming months.
Engineering
• Significant contribution to the RAMROC Freight
Transport Plan.
• Submission of detailed ‘Fixing Country Roads’
application for Yarara Gap, Jingellic Road,
Holbrook following successful preliminary
application.
• Completion of Stage 2 of the Holbrook

Environment and Planning
• Tendering and leasing of Holbrook and Henty
Council swimming pools and arranging for the
management by day labour of Jindera and Walla Walla
swimming pools on very short notice due to the sudden
and unexpected withdrawal of the management
contractor.
Following on from the previous report, Council also
received an updated report on the financial budget to
31 December 2015. The Budget Review, as presented,
indicates that the projected 2014/2015 cash deficit will
be $77,824 which represents a slight increase of
$7,811 on the budget deficit of $70,013 reported to
Council at the 30 September 2014 budget review.
A most significant report was then deliberated by
Council. Council resolved to make application to the
Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART)
to apply for a Special Rate Variation (SRV)
Application.
Earlier in the second half of 2014, Council had
embarked on a suite of community engagement
activities to seek the community’s input to the matter.

Next up Council resolved to adopt a sporting and
recreation reserve use policy and user agreement. The
report outlined that Council’s Insurer, Statewide
Mutual, requires members to develop a Risk
Management Action Plan (RMAP) as part of Council’s
Continuous Improvement Program, in which councils
identify areas of insurable and non-insurable risk
exposures to the organisation.
Greater Hume has identified the need to develop user
agreements for sporting groups and organisations
utilising Councils sporting facilities and recreation
reserves on a regular or seasonal basis.
The user agreement encourages optimal use of its
sporting facilities and clearly communicates Council’s
intentions in relation to management, risk
management, utilisation and cost recovery.
RRL has determined that the mobile library service
needs of RRL member councils can be consolidated
into a single schedule utilising one vehicle from 1 July
2015.
To accommodate the move across to one mobile
library vehicle, there will be some changes to the
schedule in Greater Hume Shire but no reduction in
total number of mobile library hours. All users will be
notified of any changes to the schedule, and a revised
timetable will be available via Council’s website.
The next ordinary meeting of Greater Hume Shire
Council will be held on Wednesday, 18 March 2015 at
the Henty Community Club, commencing with a
public forum at 4.30pm.
Copies of meeting agendas (including full reports on
the items) and minutes are available for viewing at any
time on Council’s website or in person at any Greater
Hume Customer Service Centre.

HOLBROOK ADULT RIDING CLUB
On Sunday 8 March, four riders travelled to
Yackandandah to compete in a Combined Training Day
competition, which involves both dressage & show
jumping. Phoebe Gulliver and her horse, Woody, rode
Level 3. After completing both sections extremely well,
they were awarded 1st place from a strong field. Carla
Birney, on Arabella, was placed 8th in the Level 4
section. Emma Boulding, riding Riverdale Diva, and
Skye Trescowthick, riding Holmwood Lookabout,
competed in Level 5. Emma was deservedly awarded
4th placing, with Skye 7th. Both ladies were delighted
with their clear rounds in the show jumping on a tight
and colourful course.

TENNIS
The last round of the Hume tennis was played last
Saturday in mild conditions with the local derbies
taking place in both sect 2 and 3.
In the Sect 2 affair there were some good sets had in
both men's and ladies’ with the score not indicating
the closeness of some sets. The Gold men's and
ladies’ won all their sets with only Philip Locke and
Sarah Trescowthick greeting the judge in the mixed.
Finals scores Gold 93 to Greens 50 games. This sees
the Gold cement their place in the finals and should
be playing Culcairn in the first week of the finals good luck.
The Sect 3 match was a much closer affair with the
White team winning 73 to 66 games. The White
teams men were 7 up after a couple of good wins
before the afternoon tea break. The ladies were 2
games to Whites advantage with most sets evenly
contested. Into the mixed and the scores sheet was
evenly shared with the Blue only able to make up 2
games before going down and may have won the
wooden spoon.
The first round of finals tennis saw the Holbrook
Gold defeat Culcarin by the closest of margins in a
tight contest throughout. The men's sets were all
square at 30 games apiece and Holbrook's ladies
were providing the high point being 6 games up .
Into the mixed with the advantage and the Brookers
were soon 8 up after the first 2 sets but Culcairn
fought back with a 6/0 win to put the result pending
on the last set on court. With Hamish Paton and
Emma Parker on court, Hamish started to ''tighten
up'' in the legs but Emma was at her best scrambling
around getting everything back. The pair lost in a
long tie-breaker 7/6 but it was enough to give the
side another crack next weekend in the preliminary
final. Well done team.
Greater Hume Shire Property Tests
Positive For Loose Fill Asbestos
Greater Hume Shire Council has been notified by the
NSW Loose Fill Asbestos Insulation Taskforce that a
property within the local government area has tested
positive for loose-fill asbestos.
The property participated in the Heads of Asbestos
Coordination Authorities (HACA) independent
investigation into loose-fill asbestos in NSW’s free
ceiling insulation testing program which is available
to homeowners across 26 NSW local government
areas. Greater Hume Shire Council supports the
HACA investigation and encourages any concerned
residents to register for the free testing program.
A free independent technical assessment by a licensed
asbestos assessor will now be offered to the property
owners as part of the Taskforce’s ‘Make Safe’
Assistance Package. Council will work with the
Taskforce throughout the ‘Make Safe’ process and
provide appropriate support and assistance to the
affected owner. For further information on the NSW

Learn more about lamb feedlotting at a field day being
held near Walla Walla on Thursday 19 March from 9
am to 12.30 pm by the Albury‐Wodonga branch of
Grassland Society of Southern Australia.
Branch president Peter Murdoch said with the lamb
market buoyant at the moment, the field day presented
a great opportunity for producers to look at the
economics and practicalities of feedlotting lambs. Mr
Murdoch said producers would be able to inspect a
lamb feedlot, an automatic weighing and drafting
system, and current feed rations. Speakers include
Trevor Barber, lamb finisher, Walla Walla; Cameron
Lewis, Tru-Test, Wagga Wagga; Rob Inglis, Elders,
Wagga Wagga; and Genevieve Reardon, Murray Local
Land Services, Albury.
The field day costs $15 for Grassland Society of
Southern Australia members and $20 for nonmembers. The day includes morning tea and will finish
with a BBQ lunch. Please register (for catering

centre of Walla Walla, take the Burrumbuttock Road

Awards Recognise Excellence in
NSW Rural Firefighters
The NSW Rural Fire Service Association (RFSA) is
committed to recognising the achievement of its
Members through an annual Honours and Awards
Program. Nominations are now open and Registered
RFSA Members are invited to take this opportunity to
recognise fellow Members who have demonstrated a
high level of excellence in RFSA participation.
The Awards are divided into three categories: Life
Member, Member of the Year and Young Member of
the Year. Life Member is the highest award the
Association can bestow and is presented to those who
have made a prolonged and significant contribution to
the Association’s growth and success. Member of the
Year awards a Member who has made exceptional
contributions to the Association’s programs and
projects, while Young Member of the Year recognises
these same qualities in a Member under the age of 30.
Nomination forms, guidelines and policies for the
three award categories are available from the RFSA
website or can be requested from RFSA Office. The
awards will be presented at a ceremony in June at
RFSA Conference 2015. The closing date to receive
