ANNUAL ACTIVITY REPORT
SPIE ITS STUDENT CHAPTER
Introduction
SPIE Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Student Chapter is an
international organization that is engaged in the optics and photonics in Indonesia
under the auspices of the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE),
which is located in Bellingham, USA. This organization was endorsed by SPIE through
its annual conference on May 31, 2014, and officially founded on March 3, 2014.
At the beginning, ITS SPIE Student Chapter has 12 members with 2 senior
supervisors of the SPIE members: Dr.rer.nat. Aulia Nasution and Agus M Hatta, PhD.
Currently ITS SPIE Student Chapter is the first and the only one student chapter in
Indonesia, where the establishment approved by the Chairman of the Department of
Engineering Physics and fully supported by the Student Association of Engineering
Physics, i.e. an organization for Engineering Physics students.
All working programs of the SPIE ITS Student Chapter are maintained through
Photonics Engineering Laboratory, approved by Engineering Physics Dept. Several
programs usually held in collaboration with OSA ITS Student Chapter. In general, all
program of ITS SPIE Student Chapter is intended to enhance the growing interest in
the field of optics-photonic from the community, as well as introduce them with optics
and photonics in human daily life.
In the second year of its establishment, several working programs have been
removed or modified depends on the evaluation of the program. These working
programs are Recruitment Program, National and International Guest Lecture
Program, Visit Companies, Society Gathering, Photo-Optical Instrumentation
Labworks, Workshop for Students, Visit Campus, and Science Project.

Activity Report
1. Recruitment Program
To keep the sustainability of SPIE ITS Student Chapter management, an open
recruitment is necessary. The targets are ITS students especially those who are
interested in optics and photonics studies. Attractive introduction about the student
chapter and its programs were done through posters, booth at campus events, social
media, and video profiles. After the recruitment, an inauguration is held to welcome
these new members.

Physics ITS
ITS Students, especially those who are interested in optics and
photonics studies
There are 15-25 new members from several departments in ITS
Quantitatively : there are 18 new members, not included
those old members who will renew their membership
Qualitatively: new member varies from 2nd , 3rd, and 4th year of
bachelor, 4 master students, and one international student.
Four of them are Photonics Engineering Laboratory assistant.

Elox, Winona, Annisa, Syafri, Fianti
The related activities were held in synergy with the similar
program of the ITS OSA Student Chapter. The recruitment
program begin with publication about student chapter to
several departments in ITS which have activities related to optics
and photonics for example Electrical Engineering, Material
Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, and Chemistry, the
publication use posters and brochures.
Then, in UKM-EXPO i.e. outdoor exhibition of student
extracurricular activities and organizations in ITS, the SPIE-OSA
student chapter have the booth to introduce our activity and
benefits.

The main program is socialization that was held in Ruang
Sidang, Engineering Physics ITS. This socialization is about what
is student chapter, the activities, and the benefits. Our Advisor
also gives speech and explains about development of optics and
photonics technology.
Not all members actively join this activity because some
members are engaged in campus activity, field works which is
mandatory during our studies. Although the publication has
been done consistently, students from other departments still
hesitate to join the student chapter.

2. Society Gathering
Society Gathering is a relaxing and fun meeting with all of student chapter member
and serves as welcome party for new members. This society gathering held together
with OSA Student Chapter to maintain good communication between two student
chapters.

1. To inaugurate new members of SPIE and OSA Student
Chapter ITS
2. Discuss about working programs of SPIE and OSA to
determine several programs that will be held in synergic events
March, 13th 2016 in Malang, East Java, Indonesia

All members join this activity.
Quantitatively : 20 of 23 SPIE members involved
Qualitatively: All participants enjoy the gathering and get to
know each other.
All members join this activity
All members gathers in Engineering Physics Department at 6
am to have breakfast together, then we depart to Malang by
bus. The first location visited is Wonosari Tea Garden. All
members enjoy the scenery around tea plantation and watch
how tea actually picked.
The second agenda is having lunch at Daun Restaurant, while
having games and fun discussions. We arrive back at Surabaya
at 7 pm.
The evaluation is that not all members can join the activity
because of certain reason. The committee should make a
detailed schedule for the gathering so all members know what
to expect. Overall, the event was a lot fun despite of bad news
when a father of one of our member passed away and we have
to go home earlier.

3. International Guest Lecture Program
International guest lecture program was accomplished by inviting one of
prominent lecturers from international institutions, who is actively engaged in the field
of optics and photonics. The program was aimed to provide students with a broader
and deeper knowledge about concepts and novel advances in optics and photonics.

Purpose of this program are to introduce application of optics
and photonics, prospective opportunities in future, providing
illustrations on the development in this field, and sharing of
expertise and experiences from lecturer in the topic of
Nanotechnology.

All ITS students and lecturers especially those who are
interested with the topic of Nanotechnology
The participants are 50 students and 5 lecturers from ITS
Quantitatively: There are 68 students and 5 lecturers attend
the guest lecture.
Qualitatively: The participants are from Engineering Physics
and several other departments, with different degrees from
bachelor till master students. All the participants are active in
the discussion and encourage the speaker, Prof. Azzedine
Boudrioua to explain more about the research he has done.

This guest lecture is in successive with International Year of
Light Celebration 2015 events. The theme published in the
lecture is Nanotechnology, delivered by Prof. Azzedine
Boudrioua from France. The evaluation of this activity mainly is
about the publication. The publications should be held earlier
and in more various ways so that more people will attend the
lecture. The next is about preparation. The committee should
be ready and set the theatre earlier so that when the time
comes, everything is ready to use.

- August 7th : International Guest Lecture in the topic of "Reinviting the spirit of scientific exploration from the moslem`s
golden age scientists" in Ruang Sidang Rektorat, ITS.

participants can understand easily

This IYL celebration is a very complex event with details of
activities listed at "time and place of activity" above. The student
chapter held the photography competition and exhibition,
International guest lecture, and general lecture. Because it is in
the middle of holidays, not all members can contribute. Also,
most chapter members are in field works so only very few
members listed above actively engaged in this program. The
same condition applies to OSA student chapter.
Although the members get difficulties in coordinating events in
different places and times and experience lack of personnel, the
event is a successful event.

The guest lecture”Toward Terabit/s Communication System”
went very well. The students are interested because the speaker
is former lecturer of Engineering Physics department who took
doctorate program at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology
Germany.
The evaluation of this program is the Guest Lecture was held in
class because of misunderstanding of Theatre A schedule. This
big event should be held in bigger hall or in theatre so the
committee should be more prepared.

optics and photonics.

The participants from SPIE Student Chapter ITS Visits the Physics
Department of Airlangga University. The participants attends the
opening and welcoming speech from the Head of Physics
Student Council and President of SPIE ITS Student Chapter. The
discussion was about the recent optics and photonics studies in
Engineering Physics ITS and in Physics Department, Airlangga
University. The members also introduce about SPIE and the
benefit of establishing a new student chapter.
The evaluations for this program are :
It is hard to get the permission to visit the Physics Department
and finally we held the event without any lecturer attending.
Meanwhile, this visit will be much more interesting if there was a
lecturer from Physics Dept, Airlangga University to give a
welcome speech.
Secondly, only few members of SPIE ITS Student Chapter attend
the activity because the visit held in the middle of the week, when
most students have classes.
If the activity repeated next year, the student chapter should
prepare the visit campus long before it is held, and if possible,
the activity includes lab tour, not only discussions.

7. Final Project Photonics System Competition

2015/2016 (206 students)
10 finalist teams (6 students each) all present their work at
Photonics System Final Project and all Participants of “Photonics
System” Course attends the competition. 3 winners chosen
based on their presentation with Dr.rer.nat Aulia MT Nasution

Quantitatively: all finalist presents their work and
approximately 50% of “Photonics System” Course students
attend the presentation session
Qualitatively: the winners chosen based on quality of their
work. All attendants understand about 10 project presented and
there were discussion (Q&A session) between the presenter and
the judge

“Photonics System” is one of obligatory course in Engineering
Physics which by its end, student have to create their own
photonics experiment. SPIE Student Chapter in collaboration with
Photonics Engineering Laboratory changes this very usual
obligatory final project into a competition. All the final project
experiment held in Photonics Engineering Lab.
At the preliminary stage, all 34 teams have to present their final
project result to the Lab assistant based on schedule given (4-8
April 2016). The final stage held in Theater A, at April 12 th 2016.
Best 10 teams present their final project result in front of
audience and judge. The competition designed in the form of
seminar. Every team has 10 minutes to do the presentation. By
the end of every presentation, the Judges give question about
the final project result.
The prize for the winners :
1st : IDR 600.000
2nd : IDR 300.000
3rd : IDR 150.000
All finalists : “Sego Njamoer” food voucher @IDR 50.000
The evaluation given is about the publication of this event. Since
this is the first trial, this year, the audience only comes from
“Photonics System” course so this event is closed for public.
Secondly, most members actually the participant of the
competition, so only few can help about the technical problems.
This event is a very interesting event and a success one. So next
year, if the event reestablished, the final stage should be open
for public so the goal will be better achieved.

8. Workshop For Student

trainer (SPIE members) explained the concept with fun

SPIE members divided into teams who teach 3 different modules.
Modul 1 is Geometrical Optics, modul 2 is about Lens and Eye,
modul 3 is about optical fiber communication. Workshop given
in classes or in one big hall. Each module last for 1 hour and given
alternately between theory and experiment. Student are free to
ask questions during the workshop. Active students were
rewarded by merchandise such as laser, sticker, snacks, etc.
Evaluation for this activity :
Members should be on time when coming to school and be more
prepared. It is better if the things needed for experiment
prepared a day before the workshop.

such as, laser show lissaijous pattern, holography prisms, infinity
mirror, led music with arduino, morrier pattern
Qualitatively: our project was displayed in some of Department
event, such as Engineering Physics Week, ITS Expo, and 50th
Anniversary of Engineering Physics Department. Moreover there
was a newspaper media interviewed us and cover our activity to
the Jawa Pos Newspaper

think this activity must be continued to make something fun and
educative stuff.

been accepted. But since the company already full of schedules,
PT Telkom will accept SPIE ITS Student Chapter visitation

Photonics Europe Delegate’s Report

SPIE ITS Student chapter for photonic Europe 2016, have been implemented on
03 April – 07 April in square meeting centre, Brussels, Belgium . For the first event is
opening and introduction the President of SPIE, Mr. Robert A. Lieberman . He give
some motivation for us. Beside that, its very amazing because this is my first time going
to Europe and meet another people with different country and culture.
After opening and introduction, for the next event is student chapter leadership
workshop. The speaker is Mr Jean-luc Doumont. He is very nice people, because he
can be inspiration to us when he presenting about the leadership. The event is located
in 100 hall and have been implemented on 09:00 to 17:00.

In the middle of this session, there was discussion with methods made a few
group discussion about criteria of leadership and was presented in public. It’s so
nervous because i just undergraduate student on third years, and the others are
master, PhD, doctoral, etc. Beside that, my English is not first language or second
language. But, they are very kind and they can understand it, so i am easy to make
discussion with theirs.
For the next event is student chapter social evening. This event have been
implemented on 20.00 to 22.00 and was located in crossly . Crosley was the place for
play game, such as bowling, billiard, laser tag, and etc. In this session can make

For the next day, on Monday 4 april 2016 at 12.00 to 13.30 there was lunch withe
expert- A student networking event located in panoramic hall . This session, was enjoy
a casual meal with colleagues at this engaging networking oppurtunity, hosted by SPIE
student services. This event features experts willing to share their experience and
wisdom on career paths in optic and photonics and an award presentation for SPIE
scholarships.
On Tuesday 5 April 2016 at 08.30 to 17.06 there was industry events located in
100 hall about Graphene-based photonics technology: transitioning from research to
commercialisation. There are 4 session in this event. For the first season, is about
integrated photonic devices for data communication. For the second session, is about
IR and THz applications in detection and sensing. For the third session, is about wafer
scale processing and integration. And for the last session, is about interested industries
and panel discussion on commercialisation.

In this event, there are photonic europe exhibition that have been implemented on
Tuesday 5 april at 10.00 to 17.00 and on Wednesday 6 april at 10.00 to 16.00. SPIE
photonic europe exhibition is the prime oppurtunity for researchers and engineers to
connect with leading companies throughout europe. Come see the lates equipment
featuring optical components, lasers, fiber optics, detectors, sensors, cameras, and
other instrumentation for optics and photonics fields.
The really important event is about photonic Europe 2016: hot topics. There are
three parts for this event. The first, have been implemented on Monday 4 April at 08.45
to 11.00 located in gold hall. In the Hot topics part 1, there are opening remarks and
introduction from SPIE president Mr. Robert A. Lieberman. Then there are many great
people in photonic field have to present about their experiment. Next, in hot topics
part 2 have been implemented on Tuesday 5 April at 16.30 to 18.00. In this part, there
are only 3 great people have to presented about their experiment. They are presenting
about introduction and in memoriam : Wolfgang sander, ELI-DC director and laser
scientist , Ultrahigh resolution models of the human brain, then the last is discuss about
exciting and detecting new contrast in biomedical optics . For the last part of the hot
topics, have been implemented on Thursday 7 April at 08.45 to 10.20 located in gold
hall. In the last part, there are only 2 speakers and they were discussed about
Mesoscale tissue mechanics and single photon, ghost imaging with a camera.

After attendance the hot topics, i am going to see poster session. In this event,
i turn around and see many poster about nano photonic, biomedical optic, etc. Here, i
didn’t waste the opportunity to ask about that poster and offshore I don’t forget to
ask about the contact person the speaker for my link.
And then for the last day, i use my last time in Brussels to have fun with my
friends there. We turn around Brussels and bridges and take many photos for
documentation. We can see many great building, the culture in that city, and off course
it can make stronger about friendship. I think for my experience to going in Europe,
is the most beautiful things in my life. Thanks for SPIE ITS student chapter.
