Before you throw those colourful
wrappers away, hold it right there!
These shiny packets can make for an
awesome curtain in your room. Twist
and fold the wrappers into the shape of
a bow, then punch tiny holes into them
using safety pins. Thread them using
strings of various colours and hang
them in a corner on wall hooks. Direct a
spotlight toward the candy curtains and
voila, your very own vanity corner.

There’s no need to make trips to
expensive decor stores, when you
have what you need in your store room
(hopefully). Wrap pen/mug boxes in big
chocolate bar wrappers. Get some wall
adhesive and stick the backs of these
boxes to the wall in either a zigzag
pattern or any pattern that floats your
boat.

Waking up to a striped candy wall
can be a real treat for the eyes. Pick
out pastels, bright hues and paint one
corner of your room in stripes. You
could either pick one popping colour
and one pastel shade, or, many different
hues and make a multi-coloured
pattern on your wall!

Did you know that, centuries ago, ice cream was known as the “food of gods” and was solely
served at “elite” feasts? It was during the late 1800s that common folks got the taste of this
palate-pleasing delight
The love for ice cream seems to increase by scoopfuls with each coming
day and the scream for it is still heard,
whether it’s for Club Gelato or an ice
cream van outside any school in the
country. Besides having several fancy
ice cream parlours in the city, the lust
continues, however, we always tend
to look back at the days when we’d
wait patiently for the ice cream man
to cycle his way to our doors. In the
memory of that very scenerio, TMAG
has had a short and sweet chat with
an “ice-cream wala,” Hai mia.
What’s new in your van?
Premium ice-cream; every child’s favourite, even their guardians. The most

With a giggle he said: “I am too old
for ice-creams, but I do like ‘cup icecream’ and ‘lolly.’
I dived my hand inside the van as I kept
wondering what it could mean. Being
impatient, the boy swiped my hand off
the van to put his own in and took out
the “Shell & Core” ice cream. I laughed.

to have pet names

we couldn’t read the

Identity in the globalised world:
Dimensions, transformations and challenges
With the aim of improving tertiary
education quality through social scientific research, Centre for Social Science Research (CSSR), Independent
University Bangladesh (IUB) is going
to inaugurate a three-day conference
titled “Identity in the globalised world:
dimensions, transformations and challenges” from August 23- 25. Through
this conference CSSR wants to get
a holistic view on the recent social,
political and cultural identities created
by globalisation.
Willem van Schendel will grace the
event as the key note speaker. On the
other hand, the conference will be
filled with discussions, reflections and
analyses. The conference will address
the issue of identity from a different
perspective; exploring areas such as
sociology, communication and media
studies, gender studies, international
relations, urban studies, and political
science in the context of globalisation.
CSSR is an independent research
centre established as a part of the
School of Liberal Arts and Social
Science (SLASS) at IUB aspires
to become a hub of knowledge on
contemporary socio-economic and
cultural issues of Bangladesh and
south Asia. CSSR provides innovative
learning opportunities with the motto
of “investing in knowledge production” not only for the faculty members
but also undergraduate and graduate
students.
CSSR has plans to build an alliance
with reputed national and international universities along with internationally acclaimed social research
institutions. Also the centre has been
awarded as a sub-project under the
World Bank funded Higher Education
Quality Enhanced Project.

headstart
“It creates a better prospect
in the job market to hold a
professional qualification
from Chartered Institute of
Management Accountants
(CIMA) rather than doing an
MBA” - this is the opinion
of Kashfi Saber, Finance
Consultant of ICDDR’B, who
speaks very highly of CIMA
qualifications
Kashfi Saber graduated in Finance and
Accounting from University of Exeter in
the United Kingdom. After completing
her graduation with honours, she
opted for CIMA for a professional
degree rather than doing an MBA to
get a prestigious job position.
Kashfi shares her opinions
on the present global job market
and its demands in an interview.
She completed her CIMA in 2009,
however, CIMA started their journey
in Bangladesh in 2010, which poses
the question how she learned about
CIMA in the first place. She replied,
“I heard about CIMA at my university
while I was staying at UK, and after
completing my graduation, I decided
to get a CIMA degree seeing its global
standard and demand in the job
market.” She also mentioned, “A CIMA
qualification makes you work more
practically in a different atmosphere
to sort out policies and move forward.
It makes someone able to take part
in decision making and bring about
future prospects. CIMA provides
fundamental knowledge of accounting,
finance, economics, management and
planning.”
Kashfi was born in 1980 in Dhaka
and completed her O and A levels
from Scholastica. After completing her
graduation, she worked for several
companies like KAFCO and British
American Tobacco, and on 2009
she qualified for CGMA, even being
enlisted as a CIMA member on that
year. She also joined ICDDR’B as a
finance consultant on 2014.
Kashfi shares her experience about
how a CIMA qualification helped her in
professional life, “CIMA helped me to
be at my current position. This degree
is accepted worldwide due to its
special attributes, and being a CIMA
member makes me feel very proud. It
has given me a unique prestige and
global identity”
Kashfi believes that in order to build
a brighter future, students have to be
exceptionally qualified and skillful; they
should be eager to work under pressure and work-driven. CIMA qualifications have a global acceptance that
can enrich a holder with high accomplishments, so they get a head start in
the earlier stages of their career.

You’ll need:

Small container with a lid

Old used lip balm

An eyedropper

One large red beet-kissed
•
A juicer or blender
•
Strainer

Lemon juice

Gloves

An apron or an old t-shirt
Directions
Wash the beet and cut off the top and
the dangly roots. Chop it up and dump
the pieces into your blender with a little
bit of water. Allow the chopped pieces
to be broken down into smaller pieces
but prevent it from turning slushy. Just
blend till you have tiny pieces. Turn off
your blender and carefully reach into
the juicer. Put the mixture in a strainer
and set it over a bowl to allow the juice
to drip. Use your hands to squeeze
out the extra juices. Use a dropper to
put two drops of lemon juice in the
container. Lastly, use the same dropper
to transfer the juice from the bowl to
your empty container and voila! You
have your very own tints ready!
Store your mix in the refrigerator. It
should be okay for up to two weeks or
as long as it smells good. If you notice
the mixture settling, don’t worry as this
is expected. As long as your mixture
smells okay you are good to go!

What is “Hellaflush?” What is
“Stance?” These are two terms that
have been used and heard in the
car scene all around the globe for
the past few years. Hellaflush simply
means the wheels are flushed on to
the vehicle’s fender using only the
correct camber, offset and height.
Stance on the other hand refers to an
aggressive fitment on a vehicle with
adequate ride height but it does not
necessarily have to be “hellaflush.”
Essentially, both of these terms are
heavily used in the wheels fitment
that everyone is so accustomed to
seeing on the internet.
But Hellaflush has certainly become a trend in the car scene which
origins from Northern California.
Wheel fitment has been overhauled
radically with “hellaflush” take over
and inspiring many automotive
enthusiasts to run wheel sizes larger
than what is originally recommended
on their vehicles. It’s quite hard to
see these “hellaflush” vehicles on the
road here in Bangladesh but if you
do come across one, you’ll notice the
wheels are cambered (normally at a
slanted position) with wider wheels.
There were phases of “hellaflush,”
it started with having larger wheels
than what is recommended for the
car and then went to how low can
you drop your vehicle. Hellaflush
however, in the recent times is being
promoted as “Slammed Society.” The
term slammed on its own means
dropping the vehicle to the lowest
point possible. Aggressive wheel fitment on a slammed vehicle might not
sound like a good idea to begin with,
but many car enthusiasts still opt to
take this risk to become part of the
rapidly growing trend.
Apart from “Hellaflush,” we also
have the term stance. Stance in
general is another word for Hellaflush
since it also involves dealing with aggressive wheel fitment. One popular
blog site dedicated particularly to
the stance scene is Stance:Nation.
It focuses primarily how low the
vehicle sits and on the wheel fitment.
Over the years, the stance scene has
gotten heavier. Every year, more car
owners have pushed their vehicles to
the limit with aggressive wheels and
driving extremely low. Most owners around the globe achieve a true
JDM hellaflush look by getting a set
of oversize rims, height adjustable
coilovers, aggressive lighting such
as golden yellow HID headlights and
some funny JDM decals.
One country in particular that
pushes the stance game to a whole
new level is Japan. In Japan, there
are many vehicles that have received
custom body works on the quarter
panels and front fenders just to run
ridiculously wide fitment all around.
And the funny thing is, most of these
vehicles are riding static without any
assistance of air suspension. It is intriguing to see this but the Japanese
culture has definitely set the standard
in the stance game. It is extremely
hard for the majority of us here to
get on that same level but we are
definitely catching up.

within each and every individual with the motto “Debating for knowledge dissemination.” On that regard, Rifad
hossain, the president of IUTDS, has a conversation with Saudia Afrin on the contemporary debate-culture in
Bangladesh
Why is debate important for a
person?
The process of debate offers
profound and lasting benefits for
individuals, societies and the global
community as a whole. With its
emphasis on critical thinking, effective
communication, independent research
and teamwork, debate teaches skills
that serve individuals well in schools,
workplaces, political life and fulfill their
responsibilities as citizens of democratic
societies. Once students have learned
how to debate, they are better able to
critically examine the pronouncements
of their political representatives and
make informed judgments about crucial
issues.
Is there a particular age for
practising debate?
Debate is ageless but it demands
critical and logical thinking. People from
every age group can be rational with
their intellectual thinking, and that’s
what a debater needs. It is wrong to
think that only young people can debate
better than the older folks. A debate
is just about thinking logically and
delivering the argument in an organised
manner. He/she delivers his/her speech
based on this knowledge and logic. And
I believe people who love to play with

words and logic can become debaters
at anytime, anywhere.
What are the qualities needed
to become a good debater?
A good debater has to think critically.
He/she has to be concerned and
updated regarding the issues around
him/her as well as logical, reasonable,
and persuasive. In addition, a good
debater also has to be patient, an
active listener, smart and intellectual
while arguing about any matter. Most
importantly he/she should remember
to be very well-mannered when
articulating on any subject.
Your observation regarding
the current debaters in
Bangladesh?
Bangladeshi debaters from schools,
colleges and universities are regularly
participating in international debating
competitions. And some have even
achieved much in these tournaments.
Presently, debaters are smart,
hardworking and experienced enough
to do well in the international arena.
Are the debating societies in
Bangladesh doing their jobs
perfectly?
Apart from training debaters and
arranging tournaments regularly,
Debating societies in Bangladesh are
doing their job almost flawlessly.
How many times did IUTDS
organise this competition so
far? How successful was it
among students?
Following the successful BD Open in
2007 (first tournament in Bangladesh
where a foreign adjudicator was
invited), IUT Nationals in 2009 which
was one of the biggest tournaments
of that time, IUTDS had successfully
landed IUT IV 2010 and IUT IV 2012.
We had also arranged “IUT Professional
1.0” in 2013 which is a new brand
from IUT. For a verbal warrior, nothing
is more exciting than the promise of
a tournament where debaters from
every corner of the country throng
for the title of national champion. The
excitement is of such magnitude that
it stops your heart; for there is nothing
like surpassing others in terms of logic.
Every single debater and adjudicator
enjoyed the tournament for the first time
in their lives, thanks to IUT IVs.
The preceding IVs were up to
mark since both tournaments saw
international participants, debaters
and adjudicators alike. Hopefully this
year, IUT IV 2014 will break all previous
records with lots of exciting features
and surprises.
Do you think competitions
like these will help create
intellectual young hubs for
Bangladesh in the future?
The main objective of an inter-university
debating competition is to offer a
platform for the debaters to experience
the best debating trends along with
quality adjudication.
In these competitions the most
creative among young debaters and
adjudicators participate, to win a
rhetoric battle regarding the burning
issues around the world. Through this,
these people express their critical and
intellectual thoughts on the social
policies, international issues and what
not. This in turn makes debaters aware
of the current state of our country and
that too based on their judgments.
Tell me about IUTDS’s future
plans? How many members
does it right now?
We plan for IUTDS to reach a landmark,
in terms of participation in national and
international debating tournaments,
while representing IUT and Bangladesh.
Currently, there are 35 active members
as a whole in IUTDS.n

From Hell
“Only Time Will Tell” is the first book
from Jeffery Archer’s bestselling
“Clifton” series. Archer is an English
author and a former politician
whose political luck never favoured
him. A financial scandal left him
bankrupt but he quickly recovered
from the bankruptcy after selling his
bestselling novels.
The books are based on the
protagonist Harry Clifton’s life and
the generations after him. The story
begins in 1920 when World War II
was about to break out. Harry, a boy
from a poor family in Bristol, won
a scholarship to an exclusive boy’s
school. He never dreamt of going to
such a school as his only ambition
was to work in the docks, just like
his father and uncle. But little did the
poor child know that he’s no ordinary
boy! After going to that school his life
began to change. He met new people
but was unaware of their actual
significance in his life. His life turned
upside down and everything he had
known about himself and his family
turns out to be a lie. To make his life
even more miserable, he fell in love
with the wrong person. Does Harry
find happiness or does he remain
stuck in his own misery? Have a read
and find out.
The best thing about this book is
that its divided into several parts and
each character narrates the story
from their own perspectives. Full of
twists and mysteries, the book is sure
to please any reader.
Wouldn’t it be really cool to figure out
who Jack the ripper was after all these
years?
Jack the ripper was an unidentified
serial killer from the 1880s around
the Whitechapel district of London.
The known murders committed by
the ripper typically involved female
sex workers who lived and worked in
the slums of London. The ripper slit
their throats before slicing them open
and removing their internal organs.
Judging from his victims, the evidence
gave investigators an impression that
Jack the ripper also had anatomical
and surgical knowledge.
On October 15th 1888, the killer
contacted the English media outlets
and Scotland Yard, the territorial
police force responsible for policing
most of London, through a letter titled
“From Hell.”
While we might never find out who
Jack the ripper was in real life, writer
Alan Moore and artist Eddie Campbell
can still put your mind at ease by
taking you on a fictional ride about
who might’ve been the serial killer.
Originally published as a comic book
series from 1989 to 1996, the stories
were later compiled as a graphic novel
in 1999 also titled “From Hell.” If you’re a fan of graphic novels,
needless to say, the art has become a
feast for the eyes with each passing
year. From Hell, however, might not
meet the mark with its stark black and
white scratchy pen-work. The style
can be considered an acquired taste
at best. Still, where the novel lacks
with the art, it makes up for it with its
storyline.
From Hell delivers a very solid
story and leaves a very lasting appeal.
If you’re a fan of dark stories, this
graphic novel is a must read. The
novel was also loosely adapted into
a film starring Johnny Depp and
Heather Graham.

The sky seemed to be unstable.
The sun rose up and then went
down again; this rotation took place
several times. I was sitting under
the shade of the tree, still debating
over whether I should go on the high
rope stunt or not. I looked up at the
sky where I saw two poles standing
alone. They were very tall and the
rope connecting them seemed to be
like a thread. I was surely scared of
heights, but what frightened me more
was the thought of getting stuck up
there. What if my feet froze and my
brain refused to direct my body to
carry out the next step?
That was when Shawn came up
to me. He knew I was scared; I am
sure everyone knew I was scared.
This stunt required anchors, of which
four people had to act. They would be
the one holding the other side of the
rope I was attached to, so that I don’t
fall down. Shawn told me how he
would act as one of my anchors and
said that nothing would go wrong.
He promised. I closed my eyes and
told myself that I could do this. As
cliched as it sounds, it was a “now or
never” moment. I put on my helmet
and walked towards the pole. Soon
enough I was at the top. I started
walking on the rope, confident and
reassured. I knew I would not fall
down because I had faith in Shawn.

Sitting under an oak tree in the
park, Elizabeth received news
that she would become Queen of

Psalm’s 23rd line. It translates
to, “it is the Lord’s doing, and it
is marvellous in our eyes.” Her
Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth
I was born on September 7th,
1533. She was the only surviving
child of King Henry VIII and Anne
Boleyn. She was even known
by many different names, such
as The Virgin Queen, Queen
Gloriana and Good Queen Bess.
Queen Elizabeth I had an excellent
education as a child and was therefore
fluent in six languages, making her
one of the most educated women of
her time. When she began to rule in
1558, England was in poverty and had
been torn apart by arguments about
religion between the protestants and
the catholics. She stopped the war, and
helped create the Church of England.
She also encouraged the arts and
had let Shakespeare, Spenser and
Marlowe create poetry and drama
while composers such as Byrd and
Tallis worked in Elizabeth’s court. She
chose wise men as her advisers, but
made sure that she was indeed the one
in charge. When the Spanish invaded
England to overthrow the Queen and
restore Catholicism, she said, “I know I
have the body of a weak, feeble woman;
but I have the heart and stomach of a
king - and of a King of England too.”
Some say that Queen Elizabeth’s 45
year reign was a golden age of English
history. By the time she died on March
24th, 1603, England was considered to
be one of the most powerful countries
in the world.

If anyone out there wants to
be mesmerised with some
great tunes and amazing folk
songs, then Susheela Raman’s
latest venture is the one. It’s
an impressive new album,
with the quality of being
hailed as the artist’s best work
till date
Raman’s sixth album “Queen
Between” may not top her earlier
works, because the quality since
her debut album “Salt Rain” in
2001 has been consistently high.
However “Queen Between” is an
ambitious project of hers, being
different from her prior works in
terms of depth and songwriting. It
is full of various artistic expressions
and instrumentals. The album was
produced with her partner and
guitarist, Sam Millsan. There was
also collaboration from Pakistan’s
Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwal, Rajathani
maestros Kutle Khan and Nathoo
Solanki. It goes without saying that
her album brings many shades
and offers one a roller-coaster like
experience.
The first track “Sharabi” has a very
different scale, which keeps shifting
and is very rich in composition. It
is melodious and has a nice ring
to it. “Corn Maiden” has the stamp
of Susheela all over it; the drum
beats and the guitar strums are
magnificent. “Sajana” is heartwrenching; a gloomy song at its best,
with the Lahori qawwals making it
even more incredible.
All the other tracks of the album
are free-flowing and have such
soulful compositions that, all the
songs together show how versatile
Raman’s voice is. “North Star” is
another mesmerising track, and the
title track “Queen Between” is wild!
The singing by Raman is top class
and sounds enchanting despite the
lyrics speaking of darkness.
With her latest album, Susheela
has taken the music world by storm,
making it obvious that her versatile
voice has many levels, which she is
still discovering. E ven years after
debuting, she still sounds unique and
is always growing.

Director Susanne Bier, in her
Academy Award winning film, brings
to light how people who lack the
feeling of empathy, look at others
as nothing but mere objects. “In a
Better World,” recognised as one of
the best foreign films, works with
characters who choose to act cruel,
characters who act with empathy
and characters who are posed with
some moral choices.
Collaterally set in Denmark
and Africa, the story talks of two
boys, Elias (Markus Rygaard) and
Christian (William Johnk Nielsen)
and their fathers. The two boys meet
at school. Elias, being the naive one,
is bullied in school while Christian is
always found defending him against
the cruelty. Elias' dad, Anton (Mikael
Persbrandt), runs a free medical
clinic, which is frequented by women
viciously blistered by antagonist, Evans
Muthini, the powerful local Big Man.
On the other side, Christian's dad,
Claus (Ulrich Thomsen), is despised by
Christian after his mother's unfortunate
death. About the plot; Elias and his
father witness Lars (Kim Bodnia), an
ill-tempered man, pushing around
people who guiltlessly offended
him. As Anton steps in, Lars slaps
him. Anton later takes Elias to Lars'
non-violent confrontation auto shop.
Meanwhile, Christian devises a plan for
the two to have their revenge on Lars.

clinic is visited by an emergency
patient: Big Man.

popular one is Death Note.
Death note is a
psychological thriller anime
directed by Tetsuro Araki and
animated by Madhouse,
aired in Japan from the
year 2006 till June 26, 2007,
with its 37 episodes. The
anime starts off by showing
a Godly realm, where a
Shinigami (God of death)
named Ryuk accidentally
drops a death note. The
death note, around which
the story later revolves, is
picked up by Light Yagami, a
high-school student. Yagami
realises that the death note
is no ordinary book and
he soon goes through an
emotional transition when
he acknowledges what the
book can do. However, the
story takes a very interesting
turn, when the world’s best
detective, known simply by
the letter “L” is appointed to
solve the mysterious turn of
events. Although, the anime
loses momentum after the
25th episode, overall it’s
highly satisfying.

A bit too serious? We should be. Type
II diabetes is becoming increasingly
common among children and teens,
and it is primarily caused from obesity.
For those who don’t know, this type
of diabetes is a condition where the
body resists the effects of insulin,
which breaks down sugar in the
blood, and results in excess sugar
reaching dangerous limits in the body.
It could happen to any one of us, and
living with it is, in all honesty a bitter
curse. With school, coaching, and
friends being a daily part of the day,
it is common to have irregular eating
habits and a little lack in physical
activity. But these are the causes that
trigger this deadly disease. Heridity
also is a main factor (may God bless
you) and a true misfortune.
Most may not realise the pain
this brings unless they have faced
it, but take one good look at that
slice of delicious cake before you
dig in. It might just be too late to
have another bite without fearing
dire consequences. We pray you stay
healthy, get check ups regularly, and
keep in mind a quote which forever
continues to tutor us even in the best
of days: “Better be safe than sorry.”
