As not all our first team players were able to be present for the all the matches due to exigencies of service, our team had to fight extremely hard for all matches. I would like to sincerely thank all players for their commitment towards the matches, especially so when the matches were conducted in the evenings and during the weekends. Also to all Commanders, thank you for your support towards the training and competition commitment of your servicemen. We look forward to your continued support of TEAM SAFSA. SPORTS MANAGEMENT SAFSA Inter Formation Air-Weapons Competition 11/12 (IFAWC 11/12) *photos & article contributed by the CPT SEAH WEE TAT (SAFSA Shooting Convenor) IFAWC is an annual event organised by SAFSA Shooting Club (SSC) whereby the very best of shooters amongst the respective formations gathered to pit against each other. This year, with SAFSA's very own pride, 2WO Poh Lip Meng missing out the competition, putting a dent on the reigning champion, CDO-SOTF, in retaining their title. Will CDO-SOTF produce another prodigy or will they recall the “old-guns”. Whatever the situation, we're sure CDO-SOTF always has their Plan B & C. While CDOSOTF are balancing the gap missed by 2WO Poh, the rest of the formations are in fact training hard week-in week out, months before the competition and are secretly confident to improve their standing from previous year. The prestigious IFAWC 11/12, spanned across 3 days from 4 to 6 Jan 2012, saw a great turn-out at SAFRA Yishun Air Weapons Range as each Formation showed up in full force lending moral support for their comrades at the firing point. With the use of Index scoring system in team events to promote an intensive event, it was clear that pressure was boiling up as the event progressed into Day 2. Convenors were scrutinizing each and every result, and pepping up their next line of shooters hoping to out-perform each other. Our ladies in action! After 2 days of intense competition, the ever consistent RSAF, emerged as overall Champion, edging out previous title-holder CDO-SOTF, as RSAF clinched the 1st position for 3 out of the 4 team events. With each breathtaking shot, the crowd would go wild cheering for their Formation, where each single decimal point would decide the shooters' final standing. After an intense 10 shots for each discipline, a winner for each discipline was born: Air Pistol Men Air Pistol Women Air Rifle Men Air Rifle Women - 2WO On Shaw Ming 2WO Pheong Siew Shya 3SG Tan Han Feng Chester ME2 Sanhti (CDO-SOTF) (9 Div/ Inf) (3 DIV) (RSAF) SAFSA Shooting Club would like to congratulate all winners of IFAWC 11/12 and the rest of the participants who had demonstrated true sportsmanship and fighting spirit in their display throughout the competition. 44th SAFSA TRACK AND FIELD MEET (Article contributed by ME4 Lin Xinhong) Air Logistics Squadron, Air Defense and Operations Command (ALS-ADOC) organized the 44 th edition of the annual SAFSA Track & Field Meet (STFM) in January 2012 at the Air Force training Command (AFTC) Stadium. The Meet for the Inter-Formation Championship (IFC) was held on 10 and 11 January 2012. The 44 th STFM saw an increased participation with a total of 567 athletes from 10 Formations registered for the meet as compared to 498 athletes for the 43rd STFM. Over the 2 days at AFTC Stadium, the competition among the formations were very keen as all the participants gave their best effort in all events amidst the wet conditions. There were also much cheering and encouragement from the supporters as athletes displayed strong fighting spirit and great determination to compete in their events. A total of 66 events were held with both Men and Women athletes competing in Open, Master and Veteran categories. The grand finale was the Tug of War finals between 9 DIV and NAVY, which incidentally were the top 2 formations. In this closely fought best-of-3 round battle, it was the team from 9 DIV who eventually emerged as the Tug of War champions as well as the best formation for the 44 th STFM. The teams from NAVY and TRANSFORMERS finished strongly in 2nd and 3rd position respectively. When asked to comment about their success in capturing the title, MSG Ng Juin Ming, the track and field convener of 9 DIV revealed that “The determination and commitment shown by our athletes were greatly commendable... It was a nail biting finish to the very end but the perseverance of the athletes as well as the strong spirit displayed managed to overcome all odds and rise to the occasion. Well done to Team 9 Division/Infantry for this achievement”. The Guest of Honor for the 44 th STFM, Commander AOCG, COL Francis Ngooi, presented the trophies and medals for the special events, best individual performers, and overall best formation on 11 January 12. The Best Individual Performers were as follows: S/N CATEGORY RANK/NAME 1. Men Open 3SG Timothy tan (9 DIV) 2. Men Master MAJ Dominic Teo (NAVY) 3. Men Veteran 2WO Hioe Han Meng (NAVY) 4. Women Open Ms Berlinda Chua Puay Ling (MINDEF) 5. Women Master DX9 Yap Wee Lee (RSAF) 6. Women Veteran 3WO Lee Siok San (MINDEF) The 44 th STFM also saw 2 long-standing SAFSA Track records being broken. ME2 Michael Wee from NAVY broke the 18-year record for Men (Masters) 100m with a breath-taking 11.29s, an improvement of 0.21s from the previous record of 11.5s set in 1993. Not to be outdone by the men, MSG Winnie Oh from TRANSFORMERS also broke an equally long-standing record for Women (Masters) 100m with an impressive 14.14s, an improvement of 0.56s from the previous record of 14.7s set in 1993. The Organizing Committee for this year focused on improving the efficiency of conducting the 44th STFM. The key changes include reducing the STFM from 3 days to 2 days, the use of commercial tents which took considerably less resources to set up, as well as the use of electronic starter gun, which eliminated the need for daily arm escorts. To add on to the mood of the event, sports equipment vendors were invited to promote and retail sports equipment at the venue. The Organizing Committee was very encouraged to have received numerous compliments from the participating formations' conveners. MSG Ng Juin Ming, convenor of 9 DIV commented “this year's STFM was very well organized with the events being conducted professionally and efficiently. They have not only maintained the standard from the previous years but have actually raised it this year. We look forward to the SAFSA Track and Field Meet next year and Kudos to the Organizing Committee for a job well done”. ME4 Nyeow Thai Yee, convenor of NAVY also commented “Being my first experience in the SAFSA T&F, it was very obvious that the organizing committee had spent tremendous amount of effort in ensuring the smooth conduct of the event and I was impressed at how meticulous the organizing committee was. Above all, the organizing committee had made the extra effort to have several prize presentation ceremonies. I thought this was creative and it gave more athletes opportunities to receive the awards personally. I'm sure it was very meaningful for the athletes.” The Organizing Chairman, ME5 Tan Kim Hock, would like to extend his gratitude to the organizing committee and participants for making the 44th STFM a resounding success. He highlighted that it was great satisfaction to receive heartening compliments from the participants who appreciated the numerous areas of improvements successfully implemented for the 44th STFM.
