―TRADESMEN‖
We have had enquiries about the experience, reliability and
quality of work done by our advertisers. We would like to point
out that the printing of an advert by ―the gazette‖ does not imply
an endorsement or recommendation. Many of our supporters are
not actually known to us personally. Our
recommendation if in doubt, is to ask for the name of at least 2
customers that have used the service/s provided. A bona fide
tradesman will not be insulted or phased by this request.

Well here we are again! This is the time of year when you find out about that
little leak that you were going to mend last year, oh and the flapping sheet on
the roof, that you said you would get to, got plenty of time….Hahaha!
November, the month of Guy Fawkes & Remembrance Sunday.
May I say to those of you who have never seen the remembrance parade in
Launceston, it is a sight that is truly moving, and if you get the chance, go and
see it. (see page 7)
I have been pleased to add more adverts from local people this month, and it
is funding from these that keep this gazette going, so thank you, and good
luck. Please also read the bit on Tradesmen on front cover.
I am now stocking coal and logs for those chilly nights, here at the shop, and
also bird food, plus I have managed to get recycling bags if you want to come
here and collect them.
This months edition has once again been a little time consuming, to say the
least! Has no one got anything to say honestly? Not been anywhere to talk
about it, Got nothing to sell? It really is soul destroying spending so many
hours on the internet looking for something to fill these pages with, so I have
decided to give this until Christmas, and see if things look up.
If in the meantime, if someone else would like to take this on, please get in
touch with me.
May I ask that we all look out for one another in these times, Help comes in all
shapes and sizes. Lets give without expecting a return, make time count.
Thought for the month

BLAG Update
The Open Meeting held on Tuesday 18th October was attended by 20 people,
almost filling the Laneast Church Room. The action plan for clearing deep
snow was discussed and accepted: several good ideas were put forward to be
pursued by the coordinators, Tom, Martyn and Pete. The ambition to buy a
snow plough and grit spreader was agreed as the focus for fund-raising in
2012. We could easily raise another £1000 or more, and have some fun, from:
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Bonfire, BBQ and games on 5th June
the 100 Club, with monthly prizes of £30, £15 and £5, starting in January
(meantime, the scheme needs to be registered as a lottery)
monthly grass-cutting at the Church, starting in May (different teams
each month)
and, before winter sets in, a Churchyard tidy-up (including hedge and
tree trimming)
and how about a Duck Race during the summer?
The coordinators will now be calling door-to-door to sign up members of the
100 Club. So far, 30 have pledged and paid their £12 annual subscription ...
please, if you haven’t already, join the 100 Club and join in the fun. The odds
are brilliant ... 33-1 each month, almost 3-1 over the year, that you’ll win
something!
When will the snow arrive? Who knows! But when it does, Jan Polatch will
ring around those who have volunteered to help and form the working squads
and timings from those available. Spades and fluorescent tops will be
provided.

Fox hunting in 1850s England
Fox hunting is the type of hunting
most closely associated with the United Kingdom. Originally a form of vermin control to protect livestock, it became a popular social activity for newly wealthy upper classes in Victorian
times, and a traditional rural activity
for riders and foot followers alike.
Similar to fox hunting in many ways is
the chasing of hares with hounds. Sight
hounds, such as greyhounds, may be
used to run down hare in coursing, with scent hounds such as beagles. Other
sorts of foxhounds may also be used for hunting stags (deer) or mink. Hunting
deer on foot using stealth without hounds or horses is called deer stalking.
These forms of hunting have been controversial in the UK. Animal welfare
supporters believe that hunting causes unnecessary suffering to foxes, horses,
and hounds. Proponents argue that it is culturally and perhaps economically
important. Using dogs to chase wild mammals was made illegal in February
2005 by the Hunting Act 2004.
Shooting traditions
The shooting of game birds, especially pheasants, still exists in the UK, with
the British Association for Shooting and Conservation saying that over a million people per year participate in shooting, although this figure includes game
shooting, clay pigeon shooting, and target shooting.
Shooting, as opposed to traditional hunting, requires little questing for game—
around thirty-five million birds are released onto shooting estates every year,
some having been factory farmed. Shoots can be elaborate affairs with guns
placed in assigned positions, and assistants to help load shotguns. When in position, "beaters" move through the areas of cover, swinging sticks or flags to
drive the game out. Such events are often called "drives". The open season for
grouse in the UK begins on 12 August, the so-called Glorious Twelfth. The definition of game in the United Kingdom is governed by the Game Act 1831.

Words of “remember, remember” refer to Guy Fawkes with origins in
17th century English history. On the 5th November 1605 Guy Fawkes
was caught in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament with several
dozen barrels of gunpowder. Guy Fawkes was subsequently tried as a
traitor with his co-conspirators for plotting against the government. He
was tried by Judge Popham who came to London specifically for the
triel from his country manor Littlecote House in Hungerford, Gloucestershire. Fawkes was sentenced to death and the form of exacution
was one of the most horrendous ever practiced (hung, drawn, and
quartered) which reflects the serious nature of the crime of treason.
The tradition begins….
The following year in 1606 it became an annual custom for the King
and Parliament to commission a sermon to commemorate the event.
Lancelot Andrews delivered the first of many Gunpowder Plot sermons. This practice, together with the nursery rhyme, ensured that
this crime would never be forgotten! Hence the words “remember, Remember the 5th of November”. The poem is sometimes referred to as
“Please to remember the 5th of November”. It serves as a warning to
each new generation that treason will never be forgotten.
In England the 5th of November is still commemorated each year with
fireworks and bonfires culminating with the burning of effigies of Guy
Fawlkes (the guy). The guys are made by children by filling old clothes
with crumpled newspapers to look like a man.
Tradition allows British children to display their “Guy” to passers-by
and asking for “A penny for the Guy”
Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot...

So what is happening in Tresmeer.
I am debating whether to give up the gazette as it has become quite soul destroying when I
have to find everything to put in it.
Mr Graham Bate has lost a ram from one of his fields, and asks if anyone knows anything to
get in touch. 01566 781437
There is reports of a Stag in the Wilsey woods protecting an area of woodland. This is due to
it being Rutting time and people are asked to take care if walking your dogs there.
A sparrow Hawk has the cheek to sit outside my window, here at the shop, hopping along in
the hedge...blimmer!
The dog training classes here on Monday going from strength to strength. So many new puppies.
A group of men have started circuit training at the hall on Saturday mornings and on the back
of that the trainer is willing to come and give keep fit sessions for anyone interested.
The bus shelter in Splatt has been painted, all nice and white. The signs from Splatt have
been taken again and the Parish Council looking into having them replaced.
Hedges are being cut in the area and its surprising how different everything looks.
Turnips are being pulled locally, a few by hand as the ground is a bit wet and a couple of
tractor thingies got stuck!
Well that’s it….filled that gap.
You could place something here...save me talking a load of gibberish...
PAGE 34
A little silver-haired lady calls her neighbour and says, "Please come over here and help me.
I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can't figure out how to get started."
Her neighbour asks, "What is it supposed to be when it's finished?"
The little silver haired lady says, "According to the picture on the box, it's a rooster."
Her neighbour decides to go over and help with the puzzle.
She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table.
He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to her and says,
"First of all, no matter what we do, we're not going to be able to assemble these pieces into
anything resembling a rooster."
He takes her hand and says, "Secondly, I want you to relax. Let's have a nice cup of tea, and
then," he said with a deep sigh ............
"Let's put all the Corn Flakes back in the box."
Why don't owls make love in the rain?
Cause its to wet to woo!
A blonde and her husband are lying in bed listening to the next door neighbours dog. It had
been in the backyard barking for hours and hours.
The blonde suddenly jumps out of bed and says ―Ive had enough of this‖ and marches off.
Finally she returns to bed and the husband says
―The dog is still barking, what have you been doing?
The blonde says ―I put the dog in our back yard, lets see how they like it!‖
A guy approaches a beautiful girl in a market and says
―I've lost my girlfriend here, could I talk to you for a minute?‖
Why? She replies
Well because every time I talk to a beautiful babe, my wife appears out of nowhere!
Why did God create man before woman?
He didn't want any advice!
A little boy was attending his first wedding. After the service , his cousin asked him ―How
many women can a man marry/
Sixteen‖ The boy responded.
His cousin was amazed how quickly he answered and said
―How do you know that?‖
Easy said the boy, all you have to do is add it up, like the bishop said,4 better, 4 worse,4
richer,4 poorer!

Hello!
My name is Robin and this summer I set up a surf school at the beautiful National Trust
beach of Sandymouth, Bude. I am really excited about the 2012 season after receiving such
positive feedback and a large amount of re-bookings. Sandymouth Surf School will now run
from Easter through to November providing a range of lessons for all ages and ability.
What makes Sandymouth Surf School so unique?
1.Sandymouth is not only one of the quietest of the Bude beaches but also one of the largest
beaches in the area. This provides clients with plenty of space to practice their new set of
skills safely.
2. We operate in smaller group sizes (8 people maximum to 1 instructor). This is smaller
than industry standard to ensure that the clients get the most out of the tuition that is available.
3. All equipment is provided and is of high standard. Equipment is available to buy/rent on
request.
4. Photos taken on session are given to the clients free of charge so that they can relive their
surfing experience at Sandymouth Surf School.
5. We will be offering discounts to National Trust members
and family groups.
Kind Regards

SURPRISE PRIZE WIN AT THE CALLINGTON HONEY FAIR.
Well it all happened by chance. Being a member of the Launceston Beekeepers which
is part of the CBKA and affiliated to BBKA and a hobby beekeeper for a short time,
I donated a couple jars of honey to a local raffle draw. The raffle holders who were beekeepers themselves suggested that I entered my honey into the Callington Honey Fair, as
they were impressed with the quality. They gave me the requirements needed for the entry
– a big thank you to Peter and Audrey Hicks for their support. Not having entered into
anything with my honey before I was still very nervous. Two nights before was a bit manic trying to make sure I was filling the requirements. I submitted a few jars just for the fun
and to see what other more experienced people thought of it and get some valuable feedback.
I was so surprised at receiving two first prizes in this year’s event one for Clarity content
the second first prize was for Taste. To cap it all taking the Callington Honey Fair Reg
Pomeroy Cup for the Best Novice.
The suggestions I received from the judges was also very informative – so watch this space
and see what happens next year!
Having always felt my honey had a lovely taste I now can confirm it. Come and try it only
£4.50 per jar. Pete Burgess 01566781400
If I can do it so could you it’s a great hobby for all ages
even our grandchildren help us with our hives.
The Launceston Beekeepers Association welcome new members
with open arms and are very helpful whether you have bees or not.

Ruffled Feathers!
It’s not good in my house at the moment...it all started when my wife woke
up with a bluethroat,
I said lets have a rook . It did look bad so I asked her to swallow, she said it
felt like sandpiper . Nothing for it but to visit the woodcock at the hobby.
She kept on puffin all the way, what a warbler!
The secretary a right crow, checked us in. I was dunlin. We sat down.
A swift look around, and we found a smew.
Once in the surgery the doctor took out his nutcracker so he could have a partridge, then he asked my wife if she ever tufted duck? The bustard , I up and
gave the coot a right sanderling.
What a capercaillie! If he thinks he can make a pass at my swan.
We sat in the surgery and waited for her guillemot .
Well she caught me having a little egret at a nice hen harrier. She let rip with
her razorbill, going off like a raven with a wryneck!
She hit me with her avocet, right in my nutcracker, giving me a right blackcap. For a linnet all was quiet. I said sorry and held her ring ouzel which
made her feel pheasant.
We went home like young storm petrel, Shut the doors and took a tern, I was
like a vulture. I felt like king eider, but it was swift!
So here we are! What a right mallard!

Launceston Group of Friends of Children’s Hospice South West is a small but dedicate group
of volunteers who arrange events, attend shows and fairs and generally promote the Children’s
Hospice SW in and around Launceston.
The group founded nearly 20 years ago and has been very successful at raising much needed
funds, sending on average around £20,000 per year to the Children’s Hospice. The group,
along with all the other Friends Groups in Cornwall, has worked very hard with the Precious
Live Appeal (now closed) which raised the funds to build a new hospice in Cornwall which
will be opening its doors to the first children in December. They are delighted with the new
hospice and now need to set about raising funds to run it.
The group is organising 4 events leading up to Christmas. These are the Hand Made Christmas
at Commbeshead, the Christmas Market at Arundell Arms, the Christmas Market at Dingles
Fairgound Heritage Centre and last but certainly not least the Annual Carol Service also at Dingles.
The Hand Made Christmas is on 12th and 13th November at Coombeshead, Nr Lewannick.
10am – 4pm both days. Entry is £3 per adult and children are free. Two days for families to
enjoy learning the skills to make their own or to buy hand made presents, decorations and food.
The Christmas Market at Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre is on 10 th December from 10am –
4pm, £3 entry for adults and children are free. Bring the children along to meet Father Christmas and browse the stalls to purchase your hand made Christmas gifts.
Sunday 11th December sees the annual Carol Concert at Dingles Fairground, more details next
month.
Should you require any further information about events please contact Jacki Ellis-Martin on
