DemiCon 17 Blood Drive Summary
DemiCon, in conjunction with the Heinlein Society and the Blood Center of Iowa, hosted its second annual Blood drive. I
would like to personally thank all persons that came and donated their time as support staff as well as those persons that
donated blood. There were 32 folks that volunteered to share a pint. Fifteen of those individuals were first time donors.
Sixteen individual units of blood were collected. We had five persons that did a “double red” donation—this is where the
equivalent of 2 units of red blood cells are collected and the plasma is returned to the donor. The total number of units
collected was twenty six.
This year there were a few donors turned down for a low hematocrit. In discussing this with the Blood Center Staff,
several possible reasons were identified. Some of those reasons included dehydration (not drinking enough fluids),
stress, the heat, not eating regularly. It is important to remember that we stay hydrated, get plenty of rest and try for less
stress in our lives. I realize that during the convention many of us forget about the little things because we are busy
trying to make the con go smoothly, but we do what we need to do.
We have another blood drive scheduled for next year. It will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2007. The hours of operation
will be 9:30 AM-2:30 PM. This will allow dealers and staff that need to be working during those hours the opportunity to
donate to a very worthwhile cause.

Blog About Her DemiCon 17 Experiences
Man, what can I say? I'm exhausted and energized at the same time thinking about the con, which was
extremely well run, with friendly and very capable, talented people -- everyone there was fabulous. I am
very grateful and impressed by DemiCon's Con Com, Megan took care of us really well, I can't believe
Greg was there on early Friday morning at 1 am to pick us up from the Des Moines airport. Con Com ran
a fabulous tight ship, an ambitious convention program with excellent technical support at all times. Even
though Frederick Pohl canceled, Gay Haldeman, the Great Luke Ski, and Tadao Tomomatsu were
unexpected surprises. If Mr Pohl had been there too, I think we would have exploded from fun overload.
(Can I just say: Panels about liquor? Freakin' genius!)
Astronomy panels too? I just wish the stargazing session hadn't overlapped the Great Luke Ski's concert.
There's nothing I can put in words that would do justice to describing it. I laughed till I cried. Came out of
the concert feeling quite weak. I don't know how, but he had even managed to get MUCH better when I
last seen him at Gen Con.
As mentioned, Gay Haldeman (I am so out of the SFF circuit my first thought was "Is her husband THAT
Joe?") was one of the unexpected surprises and lo, she had just come out of coaching Clarion East for a
week. She was wonderfully nice and at the Dead Dog Party we discussed Clarion, and insects.
All I can say is, the current Clarion East class sounds like they're working way too hard. Stories oozing
everywhere. Sending submissions to the Surreal Botany project while at Clarion. You guys obviously need
more Mafia, or Settlers of Catan, or Tequila parties. Really!
I sorta-moderated panels for the first time (no moderators were set in the program) and took to it really
quick (I think). The panel about art commissions was one I proposed and I think we covered lots of
useful information, going into book art quite a bit.
Quick note about blogging: Blogging came up at the panel about small publishing companies, and at
some point someone asked how much is too much to put into a blog when one is trying to become an
author. The answer to that (besides "It's a fine balance") that I took away from the same question at
Trinoc*Con was: Whatever one wants to put on the blog. At least be consistent on the topics you cover
and don't pull any surprises. (Of course, I like this answer because it lets me continue posting everything
I like on THIS blog, which has consistently been either art, books, programming, environment, and
politics-related in addition to the day-to-day, or week-to-week stuff. Did I miss anything?)

DemiCin 17 Presents Rum by Gum II:
Blender Wars Recipes (Part 1)
Sallie’s Smoothie
1½ bananas
2 – 3 strawberries
6 oz. Malibu Passion Fruit Rum
3 oz. Malibu Coconut Rum
1 – 2 cups ice
Combine all ingredients in smoothie machine, process to
desired consistency, and serve.
Strawberry Daiquiri a lá Sue
1½ oz. Bacardi light rum
1 oz. triple sec
¾ oz. lime juice
1 T sugar
3 – 4 strawberries
Ice
Combine in a blender. Serve in a stemmed glass
with strawberry garnish.
Parisian Blond
Batida Abaci
1 cup dark rum
1 cup light cream
1 cup triple sec
1 – 2 cups ice
(For a Dark Parisian Blond, add
1 – 2 oz. Crème de Cacao.)
Combine ingredients in a smoothie machine or blender,
blend to desired consistency, and serve.
1 glass crushed ice
2 oz. Cachaca
4 oz. fresh pineapple chunks
1 tsp. sugar
Combine in a blender. Serve in a goblet with short
straws.
Batida Kiwi
Scorpion
24 oz. unsweetened pineapple juice
6 oz. Mai Tai mix
3 oz. orange brandy (or Orange Curacao)
3 oz. light rum
3 oz. dark rum
3 oz. 151 rum
1 – 2 cups ice
Combine ingredients in a smoothie machine or blender,
blend to desired consistency, and serve.
(For a punchbowl, unblended:
2 large cans pineapple juice
1 bottle Mai Tai mix
½ bottle orange brandy
8 oz. each kind of rum)
1 glass crushed ice
2 oz. Cachaca
2 kiwis
1 tsp. sugar
Combine in a blender.
Decadence
1 oz. Bacardi light rum
2 large scoops rainbow sherbet
Pineapple juice to thin
Mix in a blender. Serve in a pretty glass.
