March 2016 - Holy Trinity Lutheran Church
Holy Trinity Lutheran Church March 2016 34 Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ – Matthew 25:34-36 Following Jesus was never supposed to be easy. I mention this here because I have been going over the events of the recent past and thinking about the fact that we the people of Holy Trinity have found ourselves in some interesting places. The first was the funeral for Scott Stone, may he rest in peace, and how we welcomed close to 500 people into our worship space. The key word here is welcomed. Then, the following day, we opened our doors for the Hypothermia shelter where we prepared food and drink along with clothing, toiletries and shelter for our guests – all of whom were strangers. We are glad to have our guests with us, even when on multiple nights several have gotten sick. This requires clean up (rubber gloves, mopping, washing, sanitizing and then preparing again) and caring for those in need. What is so amazing about all of this is that fact that you don’t have to do any of it. You could just as easily stay home and relax and enjoy TV or just the comforts of your couch. No, for some reason – dare I call it the Holy Spirit at work in your life – you leave your comfort zone to care for and love complete strangers. Some people would think you are crazy, but God sees it as beautiful. Later this month we will be traveling through Holy Week and then celebrating our Lord’s resurrection with Easter. This is the special week of the year where we get to seriously contemplate the true gift of God’s love made present in the Son Jesus Christ and the ultimate sacrifice for our sake and the world’s sake. Behind all of this, as you know, is love. But, to take it one step further, the actions of love mentioned above are only possible because we are a community. No one person could have hosted all of the people here for the funeral on Saturday, and no one person could have housed, clothed, fed and cared for 40 people for a whole week. In order to accomplish these acts of love on such a grand scale we need the community of faith. Your individual contribution makes our collective love and care possible. Thank you. Thank you for caring and loving strangers. Thank you for stepping out of your comfort zone. Thank you for being a part of this community. And, thank you for fulfilling your calling: “just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” – Matthew 25:40. 1 Pastor Mike In Memoriam—Long time HT member Scott Stone passed away suddenly on February 19. What is Human Trafficking: You may have heard the term “human trafficking” or “modern-day slavery”. You may have heard a news clip about foreign women being forced into prostitution or to work in sweat shops. But the issue of modern-day slavery is more horrific than most of us can imagine. According to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center, in the past decade, human trafficking has emerged as one of the fastest growing criminal enterprises worth over $30 billion and claiming over 20 million victims. Traffickers use violence, debt bondage and other forms of coercion to manipulate victims to engage in commercial sex acts and labor services against their will. Contrary to popular belief, human trafficking is happening in the United States, in our neighborhoods and targets our children. Northern VA is one of the top ten hubs for sex trafficking in the US and has more gang-related prosecutions related to that crime than any other jurisdiction according to Detective Bill Wolfe of the Fairfax County Police Department Human Trafficking unit. What can you do? Be Informed. Participate in a study series about Human Trafficking with a group of interested people. The ‘ELCA Justice for Women’ has prepared study materials of six one-hour sessions for beginners on the facts and how we can respond to effect change. ‘The Global Peace Safe Harbor Campaign’ has created a four-session study series. Please contact me at [email protected] if you are interested and we can decide on a convenient time. Educate yourself by reading about Human Trafficking and following events in the news. The internet is a great source of information. Here are some of the websites that provide useful background information. www.justaskprevention.org www.globalpeace.org/project/safe-haven-campaign http://wtop.com/politics/2016/02/texas-couple-charged-with-imprisoning-notpaying-nanny/ Raise Awareness: Talk to friends, family and colleagues about what you have learned. Get Involved: Contact your local politicians and authorities and advocate for stronger Human Trafficking laws. Make a donation of In-Kind Gifts to our April 16 WELCA Spring Convention: For Artemis House: Personal items placed in a Ziploc gallon bag – Body lotion, bar soap, body wash, tooth paste, tooth brush, packet of sanitary products (tampons, pads) For Northern Virginia Human Trafficking Initiative for needs of Polaris Project: Gift cards from Target, Walmart, Visa for $10, $15 or $25. Thank You! Pray for the victims, traffickers, law enforcement and organizations that work to end Human Trafficking. Everlasting God, human trafficking is an overwhelming and scary topic. We ask that you open our hearts and minds to better understand some of the many ways that people become vulnerable to trafficking. We know you are a God of justice and love and we pray that you will help us to keep your life-giving vision of the world in mind. Amen.
