SPOTSWOOD CRICKET CLUB! 2013/14 ISSUE NO. 2 NEWSLETTER WHEELERS SPIEL FROM THE PRESIDENT Good start to the season with the 1st and 2nd XI’s winning convincingly. Very pleasing was the introduction of junior players into senior cricket, there were many players that made their senior debut, with young Declan O’Brien taking 417 in the fourth eleven. English County player, Ed Young made his debut for the club and started well, making 37 and taking a wicket. The Committee’s big emphasis this year was to target sponsorship as a key area into increasing our fundraising activities, and I am delighted to announce that Smartline have signed a gold sponsorship package for the next 3 years, with their logo to be worn on our one day playing tops alongside BGO. The other outstanding announcement is that we are ready to sign a 3 year platinum deal with Real Estate agents Compton and Green. They will have their logo on our senior two day playing tops. These signings have been a great coup for the club and would like to congratulate Nick “Cougar” Bartol and Haydn Fletcher for their outstanding work in getting these sponsors on board. BGO has again come on board as sponsor and will have front and centre naming rights on our one day playing top Please support all our sponsors above. If you, family or friends need a new home loan or want to refinance to save $$$ please see Anthony Stone from Smartline. Buying, Selling or Renting? Adrian Butera from Compton Green will look after the Spotswood Cricket Club Family. For all your accounting and business solutions speak to Lindsay Broadway at BGO. Last week also saw the tragic passing of a former player, Tony Nancarrow. Tony, a great personal friend of my family for over 40 years, has also been a great supporter of our club over many years. Tony attended working bees such as setting up the turf practise wicket area and helped me on other projects over many years. Tony’s company has attended all 5 Presidents lunches to date and he has attended many functions over the years. Tony was familiar to many players around the club. RIP to my great mate “Carrots” Yours Truly, President John Wheeler. In the firsts we had a multiple of contributors with both bat and ball, with good time spent at the crease by DB, Ross(57), ED(37) and Josh. With 185 on the board we were confident of restricting Altona North to a lower score. With a couple of early wickets and all bowlers doing their part we were able to squeeze regular dismissals out of the opposition. There was a period of revolt from Altona North, but this was soon ended by great partnership bowling from both Knighta and Tommy. With mounting pressure we were able to close out the game with a good win for round 1. nity to give many of the juniors valuable experience as well as reward for many of them putting in huge efforts throughout pre-season. This has highlighted the extensive talent we have in the junior ranks giving us an exciting future for the club. Good luck to all for the upcoming weekend. DICKO The Two’s also produced some good performances with both ball and bat. With Pat (68) and Nudge (48*) leading the way, our boys amassed a good score of 176. After a committed pre-season, Harry was rewarded with 3 wickets in his debut match. This combined with discipline bowling also from most other bowlers, notably Simon, meant that Altona North was only able to manage 84, giving the twos a great win also. Unfortunately things did not go to plan for the 3rds and 4ths, but with many unavailable it gave us the opportu- 2013/14 SPOTTY DUCK POND Players batting 1 - 7 require a score over 20 to be removed off this list, batsmen 8 - 11 just need double figures to be removed.
