Membership Director and Morehead State University Rifle Coach Alan Joseph did a great job and each of the four Junior shooting programs will receive just over $3,100 each after expenses. The generosity of the folks who purchased Sweepstakes tickets will enable the Association’s Junior programs to continue to excel. The Juniors are the future of our sport and deserve all the support we can offer. My personal thanks go out to those who were instrumental in supplying our sweepstakes prizes this year. Master knife maker and member Gary Smith has already committed to the 2015 prize pool with the promise of another beautiful custom knife. Bob Landies and the folks at Ohio Ordnance Works provided both a rifle and a case of ammo; they are great friends of the Association. The CMP is always supportive of the ORPA and provided an M1 at cost. Jack R. Basham Gunsmithing in Blue Ash, Ohio and Kames Sport Center in North Canton, Ohio provided transfer services for the firearms prizes. announced soon, watch these pages for more information and support our Junior Programs by returning the sweepstakes tickets when they arrive. FLETCH O’DUBOIS III (ORPA Cowboy Director Bill Knall) SASS Cowboy Action - the Fastest Growing Shooting Sport By now I think everyone has heard of the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS), noted as “the fastest growing shooting sport in the world”. Since SASS got started in California back in 1982 and now there are more than 100,000 registered and 50,000 active members. And, there are more than 600 affiliated clubs throughout the country. SASS cowboy action competitions are similar to the scenes of the Western books and movies where you held off marauders, rescued the damsel from distress, or got to play the bad guy. The sport requires the use of a pair of six-guns, a lever-action rifle in a pistol caliber, and an old time shotgun either Winchester of Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and the silver screen hero Hop Along Cassidy. It was a hoot........... Since there are over 30 different shooting categories shooters compete against their peers. More than 65 women participated with almost 70 volunteers giving generously of their time and firearms. We had to limit the number of participants due to time, space and monetary constraints but we could have easily filled two clinics. This amazing clinic was presented with the generous funding of the National Rifle Association Foundation and the Friends of the NRA as well as the outpouring of support from firearm community vendors and Tusco Rifle Club. We presented one-on-one training in safety and responsible gun handling skills with smallbore rifle, military rifles, handguns, shotguns and air guns as well as archery, paintball and airsoft training. old, Henning Henriksen, Eric Himes, of these women as well as the volun- Joe Himes, Amber Hobart, Dan Hoteers! The events were very competitive, in three of the four events, first and second place was separated by a mere one point. All of the youth in attendance shot very well, and we all had a great time (even if some of us did get second by one point). Our match began with Sport Pistol, consisting of shooting 30 shots precision and 40 shots duel with a .22. For the girls, Zoe Gibson took bronze with a 464/600, Dana Cressman, finished second, with a score of 467/600, and Jessica Syme won with a score of 507/600. Robert Delagrange placed third in the men's sport pistol, with a score of 508/600. Bryce Tucker silvered with a 538/600, his brother Brett finished one point ahead of him with a 539/600. Next, the participants shot air pistol. First and second place were separated by one point in both the women's and men's events. Dana Cressman finished third for the women Robert Delagrange, Brett Tucker, Bryce Tucker Zoe Gibson, Dana Cressman, Jessica Syme with a score of 307/400. In second, Jessica Syme shot a 323/400 and Zoe Gibson won with a score of 324/400. Robert Delagrange finished 3rd in the men's with a score of 512/600. Bryce Tucker silvered with a 535/600, his brother Brett again winning by one point with a 536/600. The first place State finishers at this match should receive an automatic invite to the Junior Olympics at the Olympic Training Center, Colorado Springs, CO because their scores exceeded the minimum. Then invites are sent out to individuals with the next highest scores. Thus, all of the shooters are eagerly waiting to hear how their results will compare to the other youth across the nation. Last year, four ORPA Juniors participated in the Junior Olympics, and we had a blast. The team's next match is the Camp Perry Open, January 17th and 18th for air pistol. Stay tuned for future ORPA Junior Pistol team news--we'll let you know how we did! 10 2015 NRA Open International Air Pistol Sectional & National Championships DATE: March 6–7, 2015 LOCATION: Converse Hall; 2121 Tuttle Park Place; Columbus, OH 43210 SPONSOR: The Ohio State University; Department of Athletics Sectionals are registered matches. March 15 at 2 m 13 New for 2015 – ORPA-Sponsored Long Range Team Match Approved for Camp Perry By Edward Shank, Long Range Coordinator The 2014 shooting season is pretty much a memory and thoughts of re-loading; working brass and finding the perfect load haunts us as the holiday season is over. We now turn our attention to the 2015 shooting season with high expectations and hopes of walking onto the stage of the Camp Perry Auditorium to accept our award. Team events will be part of that quest and new for this year is an Ohio Rifle and Pistol sponsored Palma four-person team match in which it will be an any rifle/ any sight division. Meaning scoped rifles of any caliber can be used in the Palma Team match, (match number- 525). As usual the Palma Team match will also have teams in divisions using the Palma Rifle (match -523) and the Service Rifle (match- 524). All long range team matches will be comprised of a four-person team for all long range team events including the Herrick, Roumanian and Palma team matches. The second approved ORPA-sponsored team for 2015 is for a full-bore four-person team for the 2015 Full-bore World Championship to be fired at Camp Perry. As similar to the Herrick, Roumanian and Palma Team matches, O RPA will pay half of the entry fees. Due to the number of International teams and the high volume of shooters, the NRA will fill the range firing points first with the International teams and then start accepting US teams with High Master and then Master Shooters. Rules and Regulations may be found in the 2014 December Issue of USA shooting or link to; [email protected]. A team ORPA application available on the next page must be completed then returned to me by the May 15. Charles Rowe will be the team captain and a firing member of the team. Acceptance to the team will be based on long range scores and classification. As a reminder, The Alliance Rifle Club in Malvern, Ohio will be hosting a Regional Fullbore Match early in 2015. The Malvern Regional Fullbore match would provide a great opportunity as a precursor to the 2015 World Championship Fullbore match to be held at Camp Perry. Like us on Facebook. Please fill in all required information and return to me no later than May 15, 2015. All applicants will be contacted if they have been selected for a team or not. Pre-arranged team lineups for this match will not be accepted. Those who have been selected for a Full Bore team will be notified as to the dollar amount of the check to be written and returned to me. Entry fee check must be written and payable to the OHIO RIFLE AND PISTOL ASSOCIATION (O.R.P.A.). Since the NRA has not published the team range fees as of this date, no entry amount is known.
