EDUCATION PROGRAM PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English, Mathematics, Biology, Filipino, Religious Education Bachelor of Elementary Education General Education and Preschool Education Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) and Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) are 4-year degree programs, which aim to produce competent basic education teachers imbued with Christian Ideals and principles and committed to effect social change. Positive self-concept and harmonious relationships that flow from self to self, to others, to community and to God are developed through experiential sessions. Universal humanness and ethical principles guide personhood development vis-à-vis the conditions for living fully in the society. CC SS 1 Natural Resources of the Philippines (3 units) A study of the basic geographic features and regions of the Philippines to enable the students to understand the different physical and cultural processes as well as the natural resources of the Philippines that are instrumental in shaping the country. CC SS 2 Building Bridges Across the Social Science Disciplines (3 units) A study which covers varied presentations of interactive activities and integrative strategies utilizing thematic approach in instruction of two or more Social Science disciplines. CC Fil 1 Mga Anyo ng Kontemporaryong Panitikang Pilipino (3 units) Pagbasa, pagsusuri at interpretasyon ng iba’t ibang anyo ng kontemporaryong panitikan ng may pagbibigay diin sa pag unawa sa mga bisang modernista nito. 8 CC Fil 2 Pagpapahalagang Pampanitikan Prerequisite : CC Fil 1 (3 units) Sinasaklawan ng kursong ito ang pagpapahalaga sa binasang akdang pampanitikan sa pamamagitan ng iba’t-ibang intilehensya tulad ng sabayang pagbigkas, madulang pagbasa, reader’s / chamber theater, pantomina, aplikasyon ng multi-media, pinta at iba pa. CC SCI Ecology (3 units) Prerequisite : NS 101, NS 102 This is an introductory course on the general concepts and principles pertaining to the complex pattern of interaction between the physical environment and the biological communities on earth. Emphasis is also given on the current environment issues and concerns. CC SC 2 Inorganic Chemistry (3 units) This course covers the basic principles that include atomic structure, chemical equations and stoichiometry, periodic table, chemical bonding and molecular structure, gases, liquids, solids and solutions. This course develops the basic laboratory skills. It includes experiments and exercises illustrating the concepts covered in Inorganic Chemistry. A more detailed discussion of topics not extensively covered in the lecture is provided through additional experiments and exercises. 9 CC SC 3 Physics for Health Sciences (3 units) This course deals primarily with the study of Physics interrelated with Chemistry, Astronomy & Geology. As problem solving is a must in this course, mathematics becomes an important tool. Topics include matter, energy, heat, electricity, magnetism, waves, light, sound, optics and other chemical changes. This also deals with the study of the principles of physics and their applications in the health sciences. A 1-unit Laboratory is included in this course. CC SC 4 Astronomy (3 units) A course for non-science majors covering the various motions observed in the heaven and the fundamental physical laws that govern them. The course also includes a discussion of the theories behind the formation of the solar system and other astronomical bodies. CC Math 1 Advanced Algebra and Trigo (3 units) This course provides a rigorous study of the fundamental concepts of functions leading to advanced concepts of special functions. It assumes students’ thorough understanding of basic algebraic concepts including graphs and equations. This course is prerequisite to the study of trigonometry. The use of graphing calculators and computer algebra systems is highly encouraged. CC Math 2 Prerequisite Plane and Solid Geometry : CC Math 1 (3 units) This course includes the study of the undefined terms like points, lines and planes, angles and triangles. It also includes making simple proofs, solution of parallel lines and perpendicularity, polygonal regions and their areas. 10 CC Math 3 Prerequisite Problem Solving in Math : CC Math 1 (3 units) This course aims to provide a future elementary teachers with a holistic experience of mathematical problem solving and investigations. Students of this course will go through the experience of formulating and posing problems and actual solving of both routine and non-routine mathematical problems. This will enable future teachers to guide and assist students to develop their problem solving abilities. The use of graphing calculators and Computer Algebra systems is highly encouraged. CC Math 4 Prerequisite Analytic Geometry and Intro Calculus (3 units) : CC Math 2 The course provides students with experiences on solving problems that require the integration of algebra and geometric concepts. CC Eng. 1 Prerequisite The Teaching of Listening and Reading (3 units) : Eng 101 This course teaches the listening and reading component of language taking into account their nature, their theoretical underpinnings, the competencies to be developed and productive teaching-learning strategies. CC Eng. 2 Mythology and Folklore (3 units) This course primarily deals with the mythology of the ancient world and the folklores of different countries. It seeks to provide students a deeper insight into man’s origin. This also embodies the various cultures and beliefs that branch out from the numerous stories of mythology 11 CC English 3 Remedial Instruction in English (3 units) This course deals with the contemporary English language teaching strategies and methods in the context of English language learners who find themselves struggling in matters of communicative competence in any or all the domains in communication. CC Eng. 4 Prerequisite Creative Writing (3 units) : Eng Plus, Eng 102 This course provides a study of the forms of discourse stressing their essential features and characteristics, with a view of developing in the students the ability to write narrative, descriptive expository, and argumentative compositions using representative reading selections as models. CC MAPE Foundations of MAPE (3 units) The course covers the historical, philosophical and sociological development of MAPE necessary to understand the principles and theories of physical education, health and music education. The course relates the path to contemporary issues, concerns and development of MAPE. CC HELE Home Economics and Livelihood Education (3 units) The course deals primarily with family relationship focusing on worthy home membership. It aims to strengthen the family as the basic unit of society. It discusses the what, the who, the why and the how of preschool (historical, biological, psychological and legal bases) PSED 2 Characteristics of the Young Filipino Prerequisite : PSED 1 (3 units) The course provides students the knowledge of the characteristics of young Filipino children in the different areas of development (physical, cognitive, personal, social and moral). PSED 3 Preschool Curriculum (3 units) Prerequisite : PSED 1 The course focuses on the study and preparation of developmentally appropriate curricula for young children. It presents different curriculum models. PSED 4 Creative Arts, Music and Drama for Young Children (3 units) Prerequisite : PSED 1 The course covers the study of the stages of the creative life of a child from the scribbling stage at the age of four to six. It also deals with the teaching of creative activities for young children, methods and approaches in the different subjects, formulas of grading the child’s creative work, the broader concepts of arts, the planning, presentation and supervision of creative activities. 15 PSED 5 Personal and Social Development (3 units) Prerequisite : PSED 1 This covers socialization approaches with focus on play. It also discusses basic concepts and strategies in social living. PSED 6 Language and Numeracy for Young Children (3 units) Prerequisite : PSED 1 The course discusses and demonstrates the various strategies in helping young children acquire language skills and number concepts. PSED 7 Science, Health and Nature Study Prerequisite : PSED 1 (3 units) The course discusses the strategies in guiding young children understand basic concepts in Science and Health and providing them experiences in nature study. PSED 8 Preparation of Instructional Materials (3 units) Prerequisite : Ed Tech 1, Ed Tech 2, ICT 1, PSED 1 The course provides students hands-on experiences in preparing developmentally appropriate materials for young children. PSED 9 Introduction to SPED Prerequisite : (3 units) PSED 1 The course discusses the historical, philosophical and legal bases of special education, the different categories of learners with special needs, and curricular programs appropriate for early intervention. 16 PSED 10 Prerequisite Observational Child Study : PSED 1 (3 units) The course develops students’ competencies in observing behavior and recording observations through actual use of different observation techniques. PSED 11 Assessing Behaviors of Young Children Prerequisite : PSED 1 (3 units) The course discusses the what, the who, the why and how of assessing children; develops competence in using tests for young children. PSED 12 Prerequisite Classroom Management : PSED 1 (3 units) The course employs effective procedures in the classroom functioning such as routinary activities, handling materials, classroom rules, wholesome teacher-pupil and peer relationships. PSED 13 Guidance and Counseling in Preschool Education (3 units) Prerequisite : Psych 1, Psych 2A, PSED 1 This is an introductory course for basic guidance work. It is designed to equip future teachers on the basic principles, procedures, techniques and program in assisting their pupils to cope with various life situations. The course also offers the basic principles, categories and intervention programs of exceptional children in the school. 17 PSED 14 Organization and Development Programs (3 units) Prerequisite : PSED 1 Management of Child The course describes procedures in organizing preschool programs and classes. It also introduces students to the special techniques of developing speech, storytelling, dramatization, poetry reading, music and art appreciation as well as proper utilization of play/ games for preschool classes. The course also aims to let the students feel and discover the many wonders of organizing preschool programs and of teaching the preschool children. PSED 15 Prerequisite Technology in Preschool Education (3 units) : Ed Tech 1, Ed Tech 2, ICT 1, PSED 1 The course basically focuses on acquiring competence in using technology in teaching young children. It is also designed to introduce the basic learning theories and principles as bases in the design, development, implementation and evaluation of instruction using educational technology. PSED 16 Prerequisite Home-School Relationship : PSED 1 (3 units) Traditionally, parents have been responsible for rearing children and the schools have the tasks of educating them. Ed 120 PCCIANS’ SPIRITUALITY (Marian Reflection) (3 units) An introduction to spirituality and the relevance of such in the present world of modernity, technology and success oriented people with emphasis on the layman’s participation and Involvement in the Church. This course begins with an analysis and reflection on the Marian phenomenon in the ecclesial and cultural context of the students’ experience. The study proceeds to the roots of this phenomenon of belief and devotion in Scriptures. It begins with an in-depth study of the New Testament passages on Mary and a reflection on how the Old Testament can deepen the understanding about Mary. Students explore the role of accounting information in the decision-making process and learn how to use various types of accounting information found in financial statements and annual reports. This course starts with a discussion of accounting thought and the theoretical background of accounting and the accounting profession. The next topic is the accounting cycle - recording, handling, and summarizing accounting data, including the preparation and presentation of financial statements for merchandising and service companies. Following this is an introduction to accounting information systems - manual and computerized. Emphasis is placed on understanding the reasons underlying basic accounting concepts and providing students with an adequate background on the recording, classification, and summarization functions of accounting to enable them to appreciate the varied uses of accounting data. Also discussed are special journals, the voucher system, and simple bank reconciliation. 119 Acctg 102 Prerequisite Partnership and Corporation : Acctg 101 (6 units) This is a continuation of the first course in accounting for Accountancy students. It deals with transactions, financial statements and problems peculiar to the operations of partnerships and corporations as distinguished from sole proprietorships. Topics include: partnership formation and operations including accounting for the admission of partners, changes in capital, and profit-and-loss-sharing ratios; the conversion of an unincorporated enterprise into a corporation; accounting for incorporated enterprises, including corporate organizations; pain-in capital, accumulated earnings (loss);dividends and treasury shares. It also covers the preparation of financial statements for internal and external purposes; understanding balance sheet, income statement, statement of cash flows and statement of changes in equity;financial statements of companies in the service, manufacturing and trading industries, and analysis of accounting information and decision making. Acctg. 201 Prerequisite Financial Accounting Part I : Acctg. 102 (6 units) This course introduces the nature, functions, scope, and limitations of the broad field of accounting theory. It deals with the study of the theoretical accounting framework – objectives of financial statements, accounting conventions, and generally accepted accounting principles (national concepts and principles as well as international accounting standards), the conditions under which they may be appropriately applied, their impact or effect on the financial statements; and the criticisms commonly leveled against them . 120 The course covers the detailed discussion, appreciation, and application of accounting principles covering the asset accounts. Emphasis is given on the interpretation and application of theories of accounting in relation to cash, temporary investments, receivables, inventories, prepayments, long-term investments, property, plant and equipment, intangibles, and other assets, including financial statement presentation and disclosure requirements. The related internal control, ethical issues, and management of assets are also covered. Exposure to computerized system in receivables, inventory, and lapsing schedules is a requirement in this course. Acctg. 202 Prerequisite Financial Accounting Part II (6 units) : Acctg 201 This course is a continuation of Financial Accounting Theory and Practice, Part I. It is designed to cover the financial accounting principles relative to recognition, measurement, valuation, and financial statement of presentation of liabilities and stockholders’ equity, including disclosure requirements. The related internal control, ethical issues, and management of liabilities and owner(s)’ equity are also covered. It also deals with contemporary issues such as accounting for changing prices, leases, employees’ retirement benefits, deferred taxes, and other current related items. 121 Acctg. 203 Prerequisite Financial Accounting Part III (3 units) : Accounting 202 This course is the culmination of the Financial Accounting cluster. It deals with the preparation of a properly classified balance sheet, income statement, statement of changes in equity, and statement of cash flows, including the required disclosures and notes to the financial statements. It also covers reconstruction of accounts from incomplete records, change from cash basis to accrual basis of accounting, correction of errors, accounting changes, discontinuing operations, extraordinary items, interim reporting, segment reporting, and other current related items. The students will also be exposed to the financial statements of specialized industries. Acctg. 301 Cost Accounting (6 units) Prerequisite : Acctg 203, Mngt 102 This course is designed to orient the students to the cost accounting and cost management framework of business. Topics discussed are: overview of cost accounting; manufacturing cost accounting cycle; job and process cost systems; accounting, planning, and control for materials, labor, and factory overhead; accounting for joint and by-product costs; 122 Acctg. 302 Prerequisites Management Accounting, I (3 units) : Acctg 301, Fin 103 This course is designed to acquaint students with the role of the accountant in the management team by providing and assisting in the analysis, interpretation, and forecasting of business organizations. It covers the discussion of the foundation of management accounting; its expanding role, organizational structure, and professional ethics for management accountants; design of management accounting systems (e.g. responsibility accounting system), evaluating the impact of changes in business structure, functions, and appropriateness of profit relationship; advanced analysis and appraisal of financial and related information; business and budgetary systems; standard costing and variance analysis; quantitative techniques; and methods for planning and control. Acctg. 303 Management Accounting, Part II (6 units) Prerequisite : Acctg 301 This is the second part of Management Accounting and deals with the application of techniques and concepts focusing on segment reporting, profitability analysis, and decentralization; information for decision-making purposes (short-term and long-term) and non-financial indicators such as productivity per employee or per service unit; decision making affecting short-run operations of the company; capital budgeting decisions; and environmental cost accounting. 123 Acctg 401 (3 units) Prerequisite Advanced Financial Accounting & Reporting Part 1 : Acctg. 302 This course deals with the specialized accounting problems likely to be encountered by accountants. The study of the various topics in this course is based upon fundamental valuation accounting and accounting theory as applied to special income and expense recognition methods and expanded business operations. This course includes specialized problems in partnership accounting, accounting for joint ventures and associated enterprises (including International Accounting Standards Statements Nos. 24,28 and 31), accounting for domestic branches, accounting for installment sales, accounting for long-term construction contracts, fire insurance accounting and other special issues as build-operate-transfer (BOT) and similar schemes. Acctg. 402 Prerequisite Advance Accounting Part II : Acctg 401 (6) units This course is the last part of the advance accounting courses and deals mainly with consolidation and mergers, parent-subsidiary relationships, and consolidated statements, including foreign subsidiaries. The other topics deal with accounting for the effects of changes in foreign exchange rates and other similar current issues. 124 Acctg. 501 Auditing Theory (3) units Prerequisites : Acctg. 203 This course is designed to expose students both to the demand for and the supply of the profession’s flagship service - financial statement audits - and to the nature of the value-added assurance services which decision makers demand in the information age. Topics include: auditing and assurance fundamentals: relationship among assurance, attestation, and audit services; consulting vs. assurance services; types of attestation services (agreed-upon procedures engagement and review engagement); types of audits (internal, external or financial statement audits, government audit, and special purpose audits); relationship of accounting and auditing; other services (operational audits, compliance audits, and nonattest services); professional standards: assurance standards and attestation and auditing standards; professional ethics; legal liability; the framework of financial statements auditing: risk-based approach as audit methodology; audit evaluation and planning, including the concept of risk and materiality; assessing internal controls, and tests of controls; performance of an audit: evidence collection, analysis, and substantive tests; reporting: reports on assurance services, attestation services, and financial statement audits; and completing the audit including communications Acctg 502 Prerequisite Applied Auditing : Acctg 203 (6 units) This subject provides a brief overview of the theoretical basis of auditing. It is a comprehensive guide to the development and practice of financial statement audits, with an authoritative insight into the fundamental role of auditors, the influences on audits and related issues. 125 Acctg 503 Auditing Theory/ AUDITING&ASS SERV PRINC, PROF ETHICS (6 units) Prerequisite : Acctg 502 This is a continuation of accounting 109. This subject covers detailed approaches to problem and situation and will test the student’s proficiency in applying, audit standards, techniques and procedures to a typical independent audit of a mediumsized service, trading or manufacturing. Acctg. 603 Auditing Practice Six (6) units This course focus on financial statements audit. It covers detailed approaches to problems and situations normally encountered in the independent examination of cash, receivables, inventories, investments, prepaid expenses, deferred charges, property, plant and equipment, intangibles, liabilities, owners’ equity, and revenue and expenses. It deals specifically with the application of auditing standards, techniques, and procedures, internal control evaluation; preparation of audit working papers, introduction of computer application in auditing; audit adjustments; and audit reports pertaining to a mediumsized manufacturing or trading concern. The determination of audit objectives and audit programs, evaluation of internal control, and determination of substantive procedures applied to various accounts are better appreciated as the transaction cycle approach is employed in the course. Audit working papers and audited financial statements are the natural outputs of this course leading to the preparation of audit reports. 126 Tax 1 Income Taxation (3 Units) Prerequisite : Acctg. 203 This course is an in-depth study of income taxation and provides a reliable foundation on the core areas of tax that are likely to be encountered during the initial phase of a CPA’s tax experience in professional practice. It covers an overview of the national tax system, and the income taxation of employees and unincorporated businesses and incorporated business. It provides the students with knowledge of the capital gains tax, final tax on certain passive income; and the year-end tax, Improperly accumulated profits tax of corporations. Tax forms are provided for specific topics discussed. Tax 2 Business and Transfer Taxes (3 units) Prerequisite : Tax 1 This course is an in-depth study of business and transfer taxes and is a contribution of Tax 1. It covers value – added tax schemes; local direct taxes including real estate and other property taxes; excise taxes; transfer taxes on gratuitous transfers of property which are estate tax and donor’s tax; business taxes; and the remedies of the estate and the taxpayer. On estate tax, the basic concepts of succession gives the student an understanding of successional rights. Discussions on estate tax are on gross estate, deductions from the gross estate and computations for the net taxable estate, estate tax, and estate tax credits. On donor’s tax, basic concepts of donation blend into the discussion of gross gifts, deductions from the gross profits and computations of net taxable gifts, donor’s tax, and tax credit. 127 On business taxes, the value- added tax, percentage taxes, and excise taxes are discussed on who are the taxpayers, the tax base, and the tax rates. Community taxes on individuals and corporations, as required under the Local Government Code, are discussed. Reportorial and administrative requirements on all taxes are taken up. Finally the remedies of the state for collection of taxes and the remedies of the taxpayers on taxes being assessed and/or erroneously paid are discussed. Emphasis is given on ethical considerations – tax avoidance and the minimization of tax liabilities vs: tax evasion. Actual tax practice should be discussed in this course. 128 BL 1 Law on Obligation and Contracts (3) units The course deals with an introduction to law and then the legal provisions concerning obligations and contracts. The course intends to provide students with the knowledge of the general provisions of the law as explained with a Catholic perspective. The course consists of two (2) parts. The first part deal with the law on obligations from its general provisions, to the kinds of obligations up to the extinguishment of an obligation. The second part concerns the law on contracts with the following coverage: nature, essential elements, form, reformation and the kind of defective contracts. BL 2 Law on Partnership and Private Corporation Prerequisite : BL 1 (3 units) The course deals with the legal provisions concerning business organizations, specifically partnership and the corporation. The course intends to provide students with knowledge on the said provisions as explained with a Catholic perspective. The course consists of three (3) parts. The first part deals with the law on partnership from its inception up to its dissolution, covering a wide range of topics which includes the nature, elements, purpose, formation and classes of partnership as well as the obligations of the partners. The second part concerns law on private corporations with the following coverage: nature, kinds, organization, management, combination and dissolution of a private corporation. Legal principles concerning the corporate entity are likewise included such as the principles of a separate legal entity and piercing the veil of corporate existence. 129 The third part concerns the law on limited partnership. Like the first part, the inception up to the dissolution of the limited partnership shall be covered, with emphasis on the formation and its similarity and difference with the earlier business associations discussed. BL 3 Law on Negotiable Instrument (3 units) Prerequisite : BL 1 This course deals with the study of the provisions of the law on negotiable instruments. It includes the discussion of topics on negotiability of the instruments; functions and kinds of negotiable instruments; construction of ambiguous instruments; forgery and its effect; consideration; accommodation party; striking out endorsements; requisites of holder in due course; defense of the parties; discharge of negotiable instruments and the parties secondarily liable; liabilities of the parties; effects of alternation; and other kinds of instruments such as promissory notes and bills of exchange. BL 4 Law on Sales and Bailments (3 units) Prerequisite : BL 1 This course deals with law on sales covering contracts for the sales of goods including nature, forms, and requisites distinguished from dacion en pago, cession in payment, contract for a piece of work, and barter; earnest money as distinguished from option money; rights/obligations of vendee and vendor; remedies of unpaid seller; warranties; sale with a right to repurchase or conventional redemption and legal redemption; sale on credit; and installment sales (personal property – Recto law real property – Maceda law). It also covers the law on agency; its nature, form, and kinds; obligations of the agent and of the principal; and modes of extinguishments. Also discussed are employment contracts and pertinent provisions of the Labor Code and law on credit transactions such as loan, deposit, guarantee, pledge, real mortgage, antichresis, and chattel mortgage. Other relevant laws on commerce and trade such as law on investments are likewise discussed. 130 FIN 102 – PHIL.FIN SYS./TOOLS & CON.ANALY ( 3 units) This course provides the synthesis of financial policy into a grand strategy which integrates organizational purpose and goal. The focus of the course is on current thinking regarding valuation of the firm, investment decision processes, financing, and dividend policy, asset management and financial strategies and portfolio theory. This course also covers the financial analysis (interpreting and analyzing financial statements for indications of business performance and use of computers for financial analysis, assessing information weaknesses in financial statements), planning, and concept of risk. It includes the formation and use of current assets, working capital, and credit policy. Finally, the course includes the understanding of long term financing instruments and the capital structure. FIN 103 – Finacial Management ( 3 units) This course is a continuation of Financial Management 1 and provides a conceptual framework within key financial decisions and risks relating to corporations are analyzed. This analysis considers shareholder wealth maximization, long term financing, capital budgeting, risk management (the nature of risk, risk concepts, benefits of risk management, risk management processes, enterprise-wide risk management, managing operating risk and financial risk, credit risk models including Base 2) capital acquisition analysis, capital structure decision, valuation of financial instruments, and the dividend decision. It also examines the main types of derivate contracts: forward contracts, futures, swaps and options, and how these instruments are used in managing and modifying financial risks. 131 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) program prepares students to be IT professionals, well-versed in information systems planning, design, operation, development, maintenance and administration of computer applications. Detailed discussion is based on the 7-layers of the OSI reference models and TCP-IP. It introduces the students in fundamentals of networking concepts and technologies. This course will assist students in developing the skills necessary to plan and implement small networks across a range of applications. IT110 System Analysis and Design ( 3 units) Prerequisite : IT107 This course teaches the students to analyze and design information systems. It discusses the life cycle of a typical information system with emphasis on user communication, system integration, and management. Students will be grouped into teams wherein each team will be working on a specific project. This will give the students an experience in playing the role of a team member (i.e. systems analyst, database designer, programmer, etc). The course begins with a study of the structure and function of ecosystems. Then various environmental problems are examined including population growth, food supply, energy issues, water issues, air pollution, extinction, solid waste disposal, and hazardous materials. Students examine how culture and technology affect environmental policies. Students also do several group activities that require value judgments and decisionmaking about environmental issues Sci 102 Biological Science ( 3 units) This is a general course on the study of living things. It deals with the understanding on the different biological principles and phenomena, as well as with the important attributes of living substance, its nature and structure. Lit 1 Philippine Literature (3 units) This course deals with the study of the growth and development of Philippine Literature in English. It traces the Filipino literary tendencies from the pre-Spanish epics, lyrics, poetry, legends, riddles, etc. to the present. Representative works in the different periods are read and discussed. LIT 2 World Literature (3 units) Prerequisite : Lit 1 This course primarily deals with the ancient and contemporary literatures of the different continents of the world from the beginning of civilization to the present. In studying every literature of each country, culture and history will be discussed so as to determine the effect of the two in making literary pieces of the world. PE 1 Self-Testing Activities ( 2 units) This subject deals with physical fitness and related activities with emphasis on the development of different components through a series of physical activities / performances that can help promotes efficiency, coordination and general health. PE 2 Rhythmic Activities ( 2 units) A rhythmic activity course that contribute to the individual’s well being through dancing. It focuses on the proper execution of different folk dances, social / ballroom dance and modern dance. 154 PE 3 Swimming / individual Sports (2 units) For Beginners: Orientation to the water along with the development of survival skills. Instruction in the basic strokes, safety and rescue skills. The course is designed for non-swimmers and those who are not comfortable in deep water. Beginning swimming emphasizes adjusting to the water, basic floats, crawl stroke and elementary backstroke. Intermediate: Review and refinement of the basic strokes, instruction and development of advanced strokes. Also included will be safety and rescue skills and endurance swimming. PE 4 Individual and Team Sports (2 units) This subject deals on the basic skills in several sports that can serve as an aid in the maintenance of good health. Familiarization with the organization of different types of tournaments providing the students knowledge, insights in planning, selecting the activities for recreational programs shall be discussed to enable the students to actively participate in the administration of recreational activities in their respective field of work and communities. 155 NSTP 1 National Service Training Program 1 (3 units) The Civic welfare Training Service (CWTS) as a component of National Service Training Program is a course for students which covers programs and activities of the dimension of development namely education, environment, health and safety, livelihood, moral development and citizenry for the purpose of empowering them in becoming a potent resource for community development. NSTP 2 National Service Training Program 2 (3 units) The national Service Training Program 2 (NSTP 2) is a sequel to NSTP 1. It is designed to equip students with the fundamentals of Project identifications, planning and implementation in pursuit of contributing to the upliftment of the general welfare and the quality of life of the people in the community through enhancement in particular of the school and community facilities. Especially, to those that are devoted to protection and preservation of the environment, the improvement of lives, health and safety of the populace. To this end, the NSTP2 students is expected to undergo process called community immersion. Re. Ed. 0 / Re. Ed. Bas BASIC CATECHISM (1.5 units) The Basics of Faith is a preparatory subject that intends to review those students who have undergone Christian Living and Religious Instruction during their basic education and at the same time prepares those who were not able to receive such instructions to level up with the former. The subject will tackle the basic doctrines of the Faith, together with the review of the basic prayers and the sacrament of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist to train them to receive these sacraments for these are made available to them all throughout their stay in the College. Basic moral principles will also be given them so as to help them start assessing their relationship with God, others, and the environment. 156 Re. Ed. 1 Prerequisite: SALVATION HISTORY (3 units) Re.Ed. 0/Basic The second in the series of seven Religious Instruction courses, Salvation History looks closely at the period of creation and the promised salvation after the fall. More specifically, the course examines the formation of the people of God in the Old Testament and how patiently God has prepared them for the coming of the Messiah. It will also try to relate such events to the lives of Filipinos at the present time more specifically with the environmental and political situations. Rel. Ed. 2 Prerequisite: JESUS AND GOD’S REIGN (3 units) Re. Ed. 1 The course critically looks into the reality of Jesus and his time, the message of salvation he preached, and the realization of God’s reign not only in salvation history but most especially in his own person. In the process, the students are led to a stronger personal relationship with Jesus and to a deeper understanding of their part in God’s Kingdom. Re. Ed. 3 THE CHURCH: SACRAMENT AND MISSION (3 units) Prerequisite: Re. Ed. 2 The Course studies in depth the Church’s identity; that is, its nature and mission. The different images and ministries of the Church will likewise be tacked together with its relationship with the Blessed Virgin Mary. The components, stages, levels and aspects of globalization and social problems arising in the Philippines today will be carefully looked into as to its effect in the Church today. The different sacraments will be discussed thoroughly focusing on the significance of each sacrament to the life of Filipino Catholics. 157 Re. Ed. 4 Prerequisite: CHRISTIAN MORALITY: THE CHURCH AS AGENT OF SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION (3 units) Re. Ed. 3 The course focuses on the essence of Christian vocation, which is discipleship or in simple terms, following the Lord. It is designed to help students realize that as members of the Church, they are called to make the cause, concerns, convictions, ideas and world view of Christ as their own. In other words, the students are called to make the vision of Christ, their own vision. Through varied activities, students are provided with adequate opportunities to reflect on the significance of their membership in the Church and the necessity of their commitment to a life of worship and service geared towards social transformation. Re. Ed. 5 ECUMENISM (1.5 units) Ecumenism is the sixth Religious Education course provided to students enrolled in the College Department. A study that intends to promote unity among Christians and interfaith dialogue with our non-Catholic students which fosters understanding and respect for the different traditions, strengthen the faith and providing pastoral care for students. Ed. 6 VOCATION AND SERVICE (1.5 units) Religious Education VI, Christian Vocations will engage in the different way of life or calling that a follower of Jesus might choose to spend fruitfully his/her stay here on earth as he or she waits to be with the Lord. It aims to give a bird’s eye view on how with the different state of life, one can still love and serve God. It will succinctly discuss how one will be able to discern the life one wants to follow to be able to remain a faithful Christian who knows and loves God and shows it in the way he/she lives. It will also help them discover that in any state of life, we can be with God, love and serve Him faithfully. 158 Re. Ed. 7 Prerequisite: CATECHETICAL SYNTHESIS (1.5 units) Re. Ed. 1-4 Catechetical Synthesis is a summary of the religious instruction undergone by students. This is intended to help Christians grow and mature in faith particularly through instruction by reviewing the students who have undergone Christian Living and Religious Education during their lower years. The subject will touch the basic doctrines of the Catholic faith, the Church and the Sacraments, Christian Morality. As a result it will lead them to synthesize all the learning that will help them deepen and strengthen their faith and their relationship to God. ENG PLUS Grammar (3 units) This course aims to improve the English language proficiency of college freshmen by learning the critical structures necessary for communicative functions such as narrating, describing, giving direction and to acquire adequate vocabulary needed for academic study. The emphasis is on the use of English for communication and learning purposes. ENG 101 Study and Thinking Skills in English (3 units) Prerequisite: ENG Plus This course aims to develop the student's communicative and thinking skills for academic study. 159 ENGL 102 Writing in the Discipline (3 units) This course aims to develop research and writing skills of the students in their respective disciplines. ENG 103 Prerequisite: Speech and Oral Communication ENG 102 (3 units) This course deals with the basics of speech and oral communication. It uses activities for improving the quality and effectiveness of the speaking voice and for developing the students’ potentials that will enable him to understand and evaluate messages and in turn create his own effective messages in dynamic speech interaction. ENG 116 Prerequisite Business English Correspondence ( 3 units) : Eng 102 A writing course designed to provide practical communication principles in business and management, communication skill and methods of effective business letter writing. TW 1 Methods of Research and Thesis Writing ( 3 units) This course deals with methods of research and thesis writing with the chronology of steps in making a research starting from what research is leading to the series of activities that should be done that will ultimately bring about awareness of a research paper. It aims to introduce the students to the basic concepts, principles and procedures of methods of research and thesis writing. Reason for this is because the thrust of the time is research for it is a way to progress, a means to extend wisdom, a venue to gather new knowledge. In like manner, it aims to give the students the knowledge, values and skills with the integration of PCC core values and Religion as the core of the curriculum to effectively deal with scientific investigation in order for them to keep abreast with modern findings. 160 SS 18 Contemporary National Development Issues & Population Education (3 units) The course deals with the current issues and to study various current socio-economic problems and concerns that afflict contemporary society. A general appreciation and understanding of how the rapid changes and technological progress of the era of national leaders and social scientists. Hum 1 Humanities / Art Appreciation ( 3 units) It covers an introductory course on the creative output of man designed to introduce and expose the students to the different arts both in theory and practice: visual, auditory, and performing arts. It also aims to develop the students’ inner life, increase their awareness of and sensitivity to the state of arts and culture more particularly the Philippine arts. ECO 1 Principles of Economics w/ LRT ( 3 units) This is an introductory course to the study of economics. It aims to acquaint students with the various economic concepts, theories and principles, economic systems, market structures and basic economic problems. In addition, essential topics on the importance, organization and principles of agrarian reform. Its significance to economic and development of the community and the economy as a whole. 161 ECO 3 Macroeconomics ( 3 units) The course explores the concepts of macroeconomics such as economic growth and development, inflation, monetary and fiscal policies, international trade and related theories and issues of development. BL 1 Law on Obligation and Contracts (3 units) The course deals with an introduction to law and then the legal provisions concerning obligations and contracts. The course intends to provide students with the knowledge of the general provisions of the law as explained with a Catholic perspective. The course consists of two (2) parts. The first part deal with the law on obligations from its general provisions, to the kinds of obligations up to the extinguishment of an obligation. The second part concerns the law on contracts with the following coverage: nature, essential elements, form, reformation and the kind of defective contracts. POL SCI 1 / SS10a Philippine Government and the Constitution ( 3 units) The course is divided into 3 parts. The first part deals with the brief study of political science and its importance in the day to day living of the student. The second part deals with the study of the State, its development, its organization as well as its duty to its citizens. The third and longest part of the study is on the provisions of the Constitution: on the national territory, principles and policies, suffrage, citizenship, bill of rights, executive, legislative and judicial department, accountability of public officers, social justice, the family and ESTACS, which will be analyzed and applied to the current situation of the country. 162 PDPR Personality Development and Public Relations ( 3 units) This course is aimed at a beginning officer worker who would like to succeed in his /her chosen career. It is a known fact that office workers are unsuccessful, not because they lack technical skills, but because they do have that pleasing personality: that offices would like their office workers to have. Attitude is more important that skills because a person can be trained in the necessary skills but the proper attitude towards employers, co-workers and the job itself has to be developed in one’s personality. Personality development and public relations take into consideration, the five aspects of personality that makes up the whole person, physical, intellectual, social, emotional, and values. This course in important to all students taking up business and office workers who would like to embark on a program of selfimprovement. BL 2 Law on Partnership and Private Corporation ( 3 units) Prerequisite : BL 1 The course deals with the legal provisions concerning business organizations, specifically partnership and the corporation. The course intends to provide students with knowledge on the said provisions as explained with a Catholic perspective. The course consists of three (3) parts. The first part deals with the law on partnership from its inception up to its dissolution, covering a wide range of topics which includes the nature, elements, purpose, formation and classes of partnership as well as the obligations of the partners. 163 The second part concerns law on private corporations with the following coverage: nature, kinds, organization, management, combination and dissolution of a private corporation. Legal principles concerning the corporate entity are likewise included such as the principles of a separate legal entity and piercing the veil of corporate existence. The third part concerns the law on limited partnership. Like the first part, the inception up to the dissolution of the limited partnership shall be covered, with emphasis on the formation and its similarity and difference with the earlier business associations discussed. Fin 101 Principles of Money, Credit and Banking ( 3 units) The course covers three significant concepts and theories of Business Finance. First, it covers the basic financial principles and their applications in Philippine settings. Second, it attempts to discuss some techniques in the analysis of the financial condition of the firm, its strength and weaknesses and remedies to be done to improve its financial performance. Lastly, it tries to give a real-world understanding of the fundamental aspects of business finance and its applications to business conditions. Hist 1 Philippine History ( 3 units) This course deals with the history of the Philippines from the ancient past to the present scene to the pro-Filipino point of view. It aims to enrich the students’ knowledge of our history and character as a people thus, instilling in them the spirit of Filipinism. The students’ learning of the history of our country will be facilitated thru the use of the interpretative method because in history interpretation is more important. Similarly, it aims to give the students the knowledge, values and skills with the integration of PCC core values and religion as the core of the curriculum to effectively deal with the reconsideration of the facts of our history as a people. 164 Philos I Logic and Ethics ( 3 units) The course will provide the student broad and basic training in logical thinking necessary to prepare himself for further studies in Philosophy as well as for application in the field of argumentation & debate. It will acquaint the student with the principles and methods of correct reasoning so as to equip him with the logical tools required for battling falsehood & inconsistencies. Through exercises, students are exposed to situations that call for critical thinking & sound judgment which are highly indispensable for an independent & constructive reflection on ones life, especially in the ceaseless search for truths, meanings & values. Psych 1 General Psychology ( 3 units) This course equips the students with fundamental knowledge and understanding of General Psychology, specifically to enhance the learner’s understanding of human behavior, values are to be integrated in any topic whenever possible. Rizal 1 Rizal’s Life, Works and Writings ( 3 units) This course introduces the life, works, and writings of Dr. Jose Rizall, the national hero and martyr, as they relate to the sociopolitical situation of the Philippines during his time and its implication to our present time. It traces the hero’s life, ideals, concept of education, good government, and nationalism as embodied in his writings, particularly the Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. 165 IT 1/ITA 101/ICT 1 Introduction to Information Technology ( 3 units) This course will introduce the topics on Information Technology and discuss how organizations use information systems to support for a variety of tasks ranging from basic day-to-day activities to creating competitive advantage in the work place. Following an overview of basic hardware, software, electronic commerce, the impact of IS upon organizations and society, and ethical use of information system. This broad topic coverage within information systems will provide you with the necessary foundation to understand the ever-increasing relationship between information system, organizations and society in general. Also, a hand-on experience on keyboarding will be given to the students in order to develop and improve their skills in interaction the different application software needed in the program. IT 102 Intro to Programming Language w/ Prog. Logic Form ( 3 units) This course deals with the fundamentals and basic concepts of computer programming, stressing the analysis, design, coding, debugging and implementation of computer-based solutions using a specified language. It is expected that through this course, students’ interest on basic computer programming will be tapped through hands on experience, with the principle of “The best way to learn computer programming is to do computer programming”. Emphasis will be placed on structured programming. Only one computer programming language will be covered (Microsoft Visual Basic) aiming in instilling confidence in basic principles of this language. 166 ITA 104 System Analysis and Design Prerequisite : IT 102 This course provides students with an understanding of how information should be generated, processed, assessed, and controlled. Using a conceptual approach, it examines the process of analyzing and designing financial accounting systems with emphasis on the accountant’s role in the development of information systems. It introduces the features of typical computer-based accounting systems as distinguished from manual systems, and how they interface with one another. The course also introduces control concepts and techniques to manage risks in financial accounting systems. Applying system analysis and database design concepts, the students will define and analyze user needs, develop system specifications and database design, and define the control requirements. The course also provides hands-on experience in operating a computerized accounting system. Finally, the course explores the strategic implications and applications of information technology and the emerging business models in the new economy. 167 ITA 103 (3 units) Prerequisite IT Concepts and Systems Analysis and Design : ITA 101 This course aims to equip students with the basic concepts and methods used in the analysis, design, and deployment of information systems in organizations. It involves a theoretical study of system concepts, components and business organizations. The course discusses the major activities and key issues at each stage in the system life cycle, including requirements analysis, human factors, prototyping, functional design, database design, project management and implementation. Various methodologies and technical tools ranging from flowcharts and decision tables to automated design techniques and CASE tools are discussed. IT 104 Information Technology for Business ( 3 units) This course is designed to make the students knowledgeable about the fundamentals underlying the design, implementation, control, evaluation, and strategic use of modern, computer-based information systems for business data processing, office automation, information reporting, and decision-making. Although some of the effort will be devoted to hands-on work with business software, the major emphasis will be on the managerial and strategic aspects of information technology. 168 Math 1 / Math 14 College Algebra (3 units) The course deals with systems of linear equations and inequalities, rational algebraic expressions, integral exponents, radical expressions, and quadratic equations as applied in real-life situations. Math 2/2A Prerequisite Plane Trigonometry : Math 106 (3 units) This course aims to develop students’ understanding of the fundamentals of trigonometric functions: angles, solution of triangles, periodic phenomena and their applications. The course extends to include analytical trigonometry and applications of trigonometry to navigation. This course is pre-requisite to analytic geometry and calculus. The course also includes selected topics in algebra to help students consolidated all the concepts learned in preparation for analytic Geometry and calculus. The use of graphing calculators and computer algebra systems is highly encouraged. Math 18/ BS 1 Prerequisite : Statistics Math 1 (3 units) This is the first course in basic statistical concepts. Topics include frequency distributions of empirical data, calculations of descriptive statistics and review of commonly occurring distributions (Binomial, Normal, etc.) Needed for understanding basic ideas of statistical inference. It introduces central limit theories, estimation and hypothesis testing. The course gives emphasis on application through problem solving. The use of graphing calculators and computer algebra systems is highly encouraged. BS 2 Behavioral Statistics (4 units) Prerequisite : BS 1 The course presents basic concepts in the design of experiments, analysis of variance and linear regression. The course has a large data analytic component and will include applications and data analysis with computations carried out using SPSS. The Bread and Pastry Production NC II qualification is designed to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitude in bread and pastry production to prepare and present desserts; prepare and display petits four in accordance with industry standards. It covers the basic, common and core competencies. The Cookery NC II qualification consists of competencies that a person must achieve to clean kitchen areas, prepare hot, cold meals and desserts for guests in various food and beverage service facilities. 174 The Food and Beverage Services NC II qualification is designed to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitudes in FOOD AND BEVERAGE SERVICES NC II in accordance with industry standards. It covers the basic, common and core competencies required in the delivery of food and beverage service in various foodservice facilities. It covers the core competencies on preparing the dining room for service, welcoming guests and taking food and beverage orders, promoting food and beverage products, providing food and beverage service to guests, providing room service, and receiving and handling guest concerns. The Bartending NC II qualification is designed to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitude of a bartender/ barkeeper in cleaning bar areas, operating bar, preparing and mixing cocktails, non alcoholic concoctions, hot drinks and provide wine service in accordance with industry standards. It covers the basic, common and core competencies. The Front Office Services NC II qualification is designed to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitude of Front Office personnel in accordance with industry standards. It covers the basic, common and core competencies on receiving and processing reservations, operating a computerized reservation system, providing reception and accommodation services, conducting night audit, providing club reception services and providing porter services. 175 The Housekeeping NC II qualification is designed to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitude of housekeeping staff in housekeeping services, preparing guest’s rooms, providing valet/butler service, laundering linen and guest’s clothes, cleaning premises and equipment in accordance with industry standards. The Tourism Promotion Services NC II qualification is designed to enhance the knowledge, skills, behavior and motivations in accordance with industry standards. It covers the basic, common and core competencies required for the NCII level in Tourism Promotion Services. The competencies for sales/office operations include operating an automated information system, sourcing and providing destination information and advice, accessing and interpreting product information, and promoting tourism products and services. It also includes competencies on developing and updating industry knowledge, observing workplace hygiene procedures, performing computer operations and workplace and safety practices, and providing effective customer service. The Travel Services NC II qualification is designed to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitudes of an individual in the field of tour servicing in accordance with industry standards. It covers specialized competencies such as; facilitate Issuance of travel documents; and arrange and make reservations for travel related services.
