OVERVIEW
The Honda Accord Euro – a superbly engineered quality car
1.1 Introduction
The Accord Euro is a quality sports sedan with a high specification level

Honda chose features and design criteria for the Accord Euro to firmly position it as the new
benchmark in the upper-medium market.
This Accord offers a more emotional experience, with distinctive styling, greater driving enjoyment
from a high-output DOHC i-VTEC engine, and a tauter, more finely tuned chassis.
It is also an Accord offering a genuine alternative to an expensive European brand, demonstrated
by the superb driveability, increased levels of safety, greater refinement, superb fit and finish and
high fuel efficiency.
Running through all these elements is a consistent high quality level, evident in
all visual, tactile and aural impressions and made possible by Honda’s outstanding production
standards.
1.2 European credentials
In an acknowledgment of Europe’s dominance in the sports saloon market, the new Accord Euro’s
driving credentials have been developed extensively within Europe to create a package capable of
competing in the international arena.
Emphasising the new Accord Euro’s technological sophistication and performance, power is
provided by an all-aluminium DOHC i-VTEC engine of 2.4 litre capacity matched to a new 6speed manual transmission, or a 5-speed automatic with Sequential Sportshift. Now firmly

established within the Honda line-up, i-VTEC technology offers outstanding power and torque in all
speed ranges plus excellent frugality thanks to the combined effects of VTEC (variable valve timing
and lift, electronic control) and VTC (variable timing control).
Maximum output is 190 PS (140 kW) at 6,800 rpm, with torque of 223 Nm at 4,500 rpm. In
combination with the new 6-speed manual transmission, it is capable of returning 31.4 mpg (9.0
l/100km) on the combined cycle. Ensuring particularly smooth responses to driver input, this engine
also features an electronically controlled or drive-by-wire (DBW) throttle system.
Honda New Zealand testing - driving Auckland to Taupo returned manual 6.52L/100km (43.4
mpg) and auto 6.53L/100km (43.2mpg). EnergyWise Rally 2004 manual 6.29L/100km
(44.9mpg), auto 6.70L/100km (42.1mpg).
1.3 Standing out from the crowd
In a market segment noted for its conservatism, the
Accord Euro’s distinctive and stylish design signals
its individuality from the outset. Emphasising its
sporting credentials, the saloon’s harmonious
proportions are characterised by a high curvature
glass area and a bluff rear end.

Detailing such as mirror-mounted indicators and chrome door handles add to the Accord Euro’s
unique character.
Dimensionally, the Accord Euro is slightly more compact than the Accord it replaced – it is closer in
size to the highly-popular 1994-97 Accord. A 130mm shorter overall length, 45mm shorter
wheelbase and 25mm narrower overall width give it a feeling of sporty agility, but interior room is
virtually unchanged compared to the outgoing model. With a striking new interior design and
superb seat comfort, being in the Accord Euro is a pleasant, stress free experience.
1.4 Comprehensively equipped
All Accord Euros are equipped with dual zone climate control air conditioning, allowing the driver
and front seat passenger to select their own preferred temperature independently of one another, a
feature normally associated only with premium class sedans.
On the top of the range Euro-L model, the enhanced specifications include side curtain airbags,
heated leather seats with electric adjustment, High Intensity gas Discharge headlights (HIDS), rain
sensitive wipers, retractible headlight washers, electric sunroof and a leather interior. Significantly,
the curtain airbags deploy faster and cover a larger area than many other systems in order to
maximise their effectiveness.
Once again Honda fully anticipates exceptional results for the Accord Euro in the Euro NCAP crash
tests thanks to extensive body engineering designed to cope with impact energy in a controlled
manner. Similarly, the provision of a series of pedestrian protection measures should maintain the
company’s outstanding record to date in this section of the Euro NCAP tests.
Extensive measures to improve on sound and vibration isolation add to the serenity inside the
Accord Euro. Additional and more effective sound absorption materials are used extensively
throughout the bodyshell and the adoption of a new engine mounting method significantly reduces
the levels of noise and vibration reaching occupants.

1.5 A Cd of just 0.26
An outstanding feature of the Accord Euro is its ability to penetrate the air and the drag coefficient
of Cd 0.26 places it at the very forefront of its class. Such wind-cheating properties deliver better
refinement and improved fuel consumption. To put this into perspective, the Honda Insight hybrid
coupe records a figure of 0.25, and this is the best figure for a production car.
The aerodynamic package is matched by a chassis fine tuned to perfection as a result of extensive
driving test programmes in Europe. Providing a strong sense of security, the Accord Euro uses
Honda’s established and respected double wishbone front and 5-link double wishbone rear
suspension designs, revised in a number of key areas.
1.6 Vehicle Stability Assist
The Accord Euro chassis’s effectiveness is helped by a
bodyshell that possesses even higher levels of dynamic
stiffness, delivering heightened responses to driver input and
pin-sharp precision on the road. A major advance in this
segment is the standard fitment of VSA (Vehicle Stability
Assist), designed to help the driver maintain control during
cornering, acceleration and sudden collision-avoidance
manoeuvres. All models are also equipped with ABS, EBD
and emergency brake assist as standard.
The Accord Euro is even more environmentally responsible than its
predecessor. The latest model uses more recyclable plastics material,
lead usage is down to the bare minimum, while certain components on
the car are themselves constructed from recycled plastics. In an
illustration of the attention to detail applied to the design, numerous
components are subtly reduced in weight – small savings in isolation, but
together highly significant.
Built in Japan, the Accord Euro offered in New Zealand is similar to the
Accord on sale in Japan and Europe.

Accord Euro’s vibrant, distinctive styling aims to reflect both a high degree of individuality and the
enhanced dynamic qualities of the new range. ‘Bio-Tech Design’ was the adopted styling theme
and this is intended to describe the mixture of organic elements – reflected in high aerodynamic
efficiency – and more technological themes typified by metallic depth and solidity – reflected in the
relatively high belt line. The strong frontal treatment is dominated by a shield-like grille, the lines of
which are traced back into the bonnet as convex scallops on either side. From the grille, the nose
tapers, arrow-like, into the front wings, the light clusters providing strong visual continuity of this
theme before they finally wrap round and extend into the wing line. The deep front bumper features
three openings in its lower edge – a long central one flanked by two small scoops.

Via the side character line in the car’s flanks, the upper edge of the bumper extends in one smooth
sweep to the rear of the car, a single bold stroke that characterises the overall sharpness of the
design. A further character line in the lower edge of the doors is continued into the lower rear wing.
The rich rear flanks and the bluff rear end – which plays a key functional role in its outstanding
aerodynamic performance – contribute to the impression of power.
While the transition from rear wing to tail and upper boot lid to lower boot lid is quite sharply
demarcated, from this point there is a subtle tapering of the bumper towards the centre of the car.
All models have projector-style headlamps whose free-form reflector
technology eliminates light scatter to focus more light ahead of the car.
High intensity gas discharge (HID) units are fitted to the Euro-L model as
standard. Their high voltage/ xenon gas technology provides twice the
luminosity of halogen equivalents.
Detail styling elements include side indicators mounted in the door mirrors – consisting of a strip of
LEDs, and chrome door handles.
2.2 Firm foundation: body stiffness better than ever
A particularly stiff bodyshell brings with it the
benefits of a reduction in noise and vibration,
especially that from low frequency resonance, at
the same time providing a solid platform from
which the suspension can work more effectively.
Increases in the new Accord Euro's static stiffness
mean that stiffness properties displayed by the
body are some of the highest of any car.
Critical areas of body joint strengthening include:
• the A-pillar and B-pillar/sill junctions
• where the A-pillar meets the bulkhead
• at the rear corner of the boot
• a box-shaped, reinforcing stiffener which
integrates the C-pillar and rear panel.
In terms of on-road chassis behaviour, the end result is an optimised balance in stiffness front to
rear, greater lateral responsiveness at the front and improved vertical stability at the rear.
2.3 Smooth operator: Cd figure of just 0.26
Improving aerodynamic performance, to bring major benefits in terms of vehicle dynamics, fuel
efficiency and refinement, is the result of close attention to even the smallest of detailing, for the
accumulated effect of even minor adjustments can have a significant impact on the body as a
whole. That’s certainly the case with the new Accord Euro and extensive wind tunnel testing and
CFD (computer simulation) have delivered a drag coefficient of 0.26, one of the best figures in the
class.

Among the key design elements behind this achievement is the ‘three-dimensional rounded cabin’ –
which describes the side glass and pillar structures curved in three planes – and mouldings that
seamlessly integrate the window sash and A-pillar; other contributing factors include refinement of
the front bumper profile and boot area and reduced clearance between the wheel arches and tyres.
Consideration of the underside of the car is just as important as the upper body, and fine-tuning the
airflow beneath the car has played a key role. A number of trim items go to make up the smooth
underbody including optimised middle/rear floor undercovers, a front chin spoiler, an engine
undercover, and front strakes ahead of the wheelarches.
One of the associated benefits of aerodynamic efficiency is a reduction in wind noise – both at mid
and high frequencies. A critical area is that around the A-pillar where air-flow becomes turbulent,
so creating a vortex and leading to the impression of wind noise within the cabin. By manipulating
the shape of the A-pillar and door mirror, the Accord Euro’s designers were able to reduce the size
of this vortex.
2.4 Keeping it quiet: enhanced noise reduction measures
The previous Accord already boasted a host of features designed to impart an air of refinement and
in-cabin serenity. The new Accord Euro builds on that reputation with a series of measures aimed at
improving engine noise under acceleration and road noise characteristics, as well as benefiting
from the more rigid body.
Much of the improvement results from the enhanced insulation/absorption characteristics of the:
• bonnet insulator
• outer dashboard insulator
• sound absorbing roof lining
• moulded urethane dashboard insulator
• moulded urethane floor insulator
• moulded urethane rear wheel arch insulator
• wing/bulkhead noise insulator
• rear parcel shelf insulator (saloon)
• melt sheet sandwich dashboard panel
• lightweight/high damping melt sheet on floor sections
Passengers also benefit from the greater road noise absorption in the rear subframe, the rigidity of
which has been increased by deeper box sections and a wider central cross member.

2.5 Engine mounts
To reduce the level of engine noise and vibration reaching the cabin, a new ‘centre of gravity
engine mounting’ method has been adopted. Rather than the conventional direct-to-body design,
which allows vibration to be directly transmitted, in the new Accord Euro the engine is supported by
three mounts surrounding its centre of gravity. These in turn are connected to the side frame, which
is attached to the body via rubber damping material, to give a two-step vibration reduction and
considerably more cabin refinement.
2.6 The view from inside: more space, more style, more relaxation
The wind-cheating properties of the body, its excellent dynamic stiffness and enhanced noise
insulation make the interior of this Accord a particularly relaxing place to be. The smart, stylish
appearance, with its striking fascia design, is complemented by the use of high grade materials and
flush mating surfaces between fixtures and fittings throughout the cabin, adding to the overall sense
of quality.
2.7 In the seat of the action
Extensive customer research and testing on public roads in a number of different countries helped
Honda to arrive at the Accord Euro’s final driving position – one that would reflect its comfortable,
sports saloon philosophy. The provision of excellent steering wheel and pedal
operability – that is, beyond conventional standards – was paramount.
The steering wheel is adjustable for both reach and rake, providing 40mm of telescopic adjustment
and 40 mm of tilt adjustment for a wide range of alternative seating arrangements. The driver’s seat
also offers 40 mm of height adjustment with a convenient ratchet-type adjuster that requires less
effort and is simpler to operate.
Fine adjustment even extends to the novel double ball-jointed driving mirror, the design of which
allows drivers of all heights to find an ideal position. The Euro-L model is provided with the luxury of
eight-way power seats for front seat occupants.

Side bolsters on both the seat base and seat back are larger for greater shoulder and hip support.
The design of the spring structure in the seat base is such that it draws the pelvis rearwards into the
seat, while the Schukra-manufactured lumbar support in the seat back has been chosen for its
ability to provide support in multiple dimensions. Further comfort is provided by an adjustable
centre armrest between the front seats which can be slid fore and aft through 80 mm allowing an
optimum position to be selected. A centre armrest for rear seat passengers reveals twin cup holders
in its upper surface when folded down.
Over its complete stroke, a conventional accelerator pedal requires a large change in the
pedal/sole contact area to the point where, at full depression, it relies on pressure from the toes; as
a consequence it can feel heavy at certain points through its arc of operation. To counteract this,
the new Accord Euro is provided with a large, bottom-hinged ‘organ type’ accelerator pedal which
provides the driver with an improved, more linear feel.
2.8 Steering wheel mounted audio/cruise control switches
A three spoke leather-rim wheel is provided with audio controls
on its left hand side and the standard cruise control settings on
the right. All light functions, including front foglamps (Euro-L
only) are now incorporated into the left hand column stalk.
2.9 Black face high-tech
The Accord Euro’s new instrument panel presents a darkened panel with the ignition off,
transforming to a bright display when the door lock is released and an even higher contrast one
when the ignition is switched on thanks to the use of backlighting. The highly visible, highly legible
instruments are large in diameter and feature white numerals and red-illuminated needles. The
large central speedometer is also slightly raised around its circumference to provide an attractive
3D effect. To its left is a smaller rev counter, also containing a readout of automatic transmission
shift positions. To the right of the speedometer are the fuel and, slightly offset to the right,
temperature gauges. Above this is the ‘door open’ schematic. A LCD showing outside temperature
and the trip meter appear below the speedometer.
The distinctive centre console houses the central air vents in its upper section and beneath these the
fully integrated audio system with its information panel providing time, audio and air conditioning
information. The panel is in turn surrounded by the audio controls in a ‘shield’ type formation.
Directly below are three large diameter rotary controls. The centre one controls the radio volume
and features a central on/off switch; those either side control the air conditioning temperature
setting where a dual zone system is fitted. Finally, below these are the remaining air conditioning
switches.

2.10 Interior themes
The standard model features a soft woven seat trim, and silver finish trim applied to the gear shift
surround and CD box lid – the latter also featuring a chrome handle. Depending on body colour,
the interior colour theme is either Black (with light grey roof lining and all black instrument panel) or
Black and Ivory (with ivory roof lining, black upper and ivory lower instrument panel).
Euro-L models have soft-woven trimmed seats, with the option of Black or Ivory leather. Selected
trim items are finished in dark or light wood-grain to match the Black or Black/Ivory interior themes.
2.11 Equal opportunities: dual zone air conditioning
All Accord Euros are equipped with dual zone climate control air conditioning, allowing the driver
and front seat passenger to select their own preferred temperature independently. Temperature
adjustments are made using the large rotary controls located left and right on the centre console or,
when so equipped, using the touch screen facility of the satellite navigation system. A visual
indication of the two temperatures selected for each side is displayed in the standard LCD centre
console screen.
2.12 Comprehensive standard audio system
The standard audio system, fully integrated into the central fascia and thus specific to Accord Euro
models, features an AM/FM radio and 6-disc CD player, with built-in 30W x 4 channel amp, two
17 cm speakers in the front doors and two 6 x 9 inch speakers on the rear shelf . Radio stations or
CD tracks selected are displayed on the standard centre console screen. Volume and on/off
adjustments are made using the central rotary control (or the steering wheel mounted switches for
volume – see below).
All models come with the added convenience of steering wheel mounted audio controls allowing
volume and track/tuning adjustments to be made independently of the fascia mounted controls.
2.13 Goods in transit: in-car storage
In addition to the glove box, a large storage box is provided
beneath the air conditioning/audio controls within the centre
console. Capable of holding 12 CDs, this features a pushtype, damped action cover in a variety of trims, and a
rubber mat applied to the base. Lifting the sliding centre
armrest reveals a shallow trinkets tray and beneath this, a
deeper storage box, the armrest and tray being lifted by
separate levers. Two flip-down cup-holders, covered by a
damped-action lid are located ahead of the armrest, while a
further two are provided in the rear seat armrest. A
sunglasses holder is located immediately above the driving
mirror, again with a damped-action cover a a coin drawer.

2.14 Convenient wipes: rain sensor standard on Euro-L
The Euro-L comes equipped with a rain-sensing wiper system. The reflection of infra-red light
emitted from an LED located behind the rear-view mirror is altered by water droplets falling on the
windscreen. Based on these changes, the system will automatically activate the wipers and adjust
the timing according to the intensity of the rain. A rotary control located on the wiper stalk allows
the sensitivity of the system to be fine-tuned. The Euro-L also has retractible headlight washers.
2.15 Slam thunk: door closure fine-tuned
Door shut characteristics have a significant part to play in the overall impression of a car’s quality
and those on the new Accord Euro close with a satisfying solidity. The secret is to ensure rapid
decay of high frequency noises while amplifying deeper ones and the resources devoted to
achieving this typify the level of attention lavished on the Accord Euro. First the engineering team
developed a new door lock structure that virtually eliminates operational noise when the door is
shut. They then created a high rigidity door sash to increase the decay time of any high frequency
noise generated and finally a door seal which provides a deep, heavy sound by vibrating the door
when it is closed. The end result is a high quality closing sound, made all the more satisfying by the
reduced effort required because of the slightly inclined pivot angle of both front and rear doors.
The wide-opening front doors offer three fixed check positions, the rear doors two, and to provide
them with a firm, smooth, high quality operation during opening, they feature a ball type checker
consisting of a ball bearing/spring structure, the ball bearing holding the door in position at each
indent on the checker.
2.16 Light convenience
The new Accord Euro features a convenient timed interior lighting system. Thus, if the doors are
unlocked with either the key or the keyless entry system, the interior light comes on at maximum
intensity. It then remains on for 30 seconds after unlocking, for 3 minutes if the door is subsequently
opened and for 6 seconds following closure of the door. Conversely, when the ignition key is
removed after driving, or when the doors are unlocked from inside the car, the light remains on for
10 seconds. Again, opening the door prompts the light to stay on for 3 minutes, but if shut in the
meantime, it will be extinguished after 6 seconds. In all cases there is a gradual reduction in
illumination towards the end of the timed period before the light is finally switched off.
2.17 Lifting the lid: saloon’s capacious boot features electric release
Boot volume, with a full size spare wheel is 418 litres. That’s sufficient to accommodate four 9 inch
diameter golf bags, or four large Samsonite suitcases. The way in which the hinges have been
shaped has allowed the distance between them to be increased, for easier boot access, and since
they disappear behind the boot lining panel, contact with luggage is avoided; both hinge and
cabling are covered by a garnish.
Extra convenience comes from an electric release
mechanism, so that a slight touch of the boot-lid
mounted button releases it immediately. A release
lever within the car is located alongside the driver’s
seat. The boot can be opened remotely with the key
also. The 60:40 folding rear seat back permits
further loading permutations.

The Accord Euro’s new engine uses the advanced i-VTEC technology now firmly established in the
Honda range to offer an outstanding balance of power and torque in all speed ranges and a level
of fuel efficiency that places the Accord Euro firmly at the forefront of its class. The 2.4 litre engine
is essentially similar to the power unit fitted to the Honda CR-V and Odyssey. It is available in the
standard model with a choice of 6 speed manual or 5 speed Sportshift automatic transmission. The
Euro-L is available in automatic.
3.1 223 Nm torque from a 2.4 litre engine
Offering outstanding torque characteristics, particularly at
low and medium engine speeds, the new Accord Euro’s
2.4 litre DOHC i-VTEC engine delivers no less than 190
PS (140 kW) at 6,800 rpm and maximum torque of 223
Nm at 4,500 rpm. Matched to the new 6-speed manual
gearbox, it returns 31.4 mpg (9.0 l/100km) in the
combined cycle, while the automatic model achieves
30.1 mpg (9.4 l/100km). The adoption of an
electronically controlled throttle system – or drive-by-wire
throttle (DBW) system –
ensures that the engine
provides
particularly
smooth responses to
driver inputs.
The Accord Euro has a power to weight ration of 9.96 kg/kw.
3.2 Electronic Throttle Control System (ECTS)
Electronic throttle control system is Honda’s name for drive-by-wire. In place of the conventional
mechanical connection between the accelerator pedal and the engine throttle control, ECTS
provides an all-electronic system able to detect throttle pedal position by means of a series of
sensors, relaying that information to a computer which instantaneously activates the throttle by
means of a step motor. The control software works in harmony with the engine management system
to provide very smooth and responsive adjustments directly proportional to driver input.
Furthermore, its full integration with the software of the automatic transmission and cruise control
(where fitted) enhances the precision of those systems for maximum driver enjoyment.
0 – 100 in just 7.9 seconds. Excellent flexibility is reflected in outstanding overtaking ability, and the
manual Accord Euro takes a class-beating 10.2 seconds to accelerate from 80 to 120 km/h in 5th
gear, for example.
By way of comparison, the previous generation Accord 2.3 SOHC VTEC (which this model
effectively replaces) produced 152PS (113 kW) at 5,700 rpm and 206 Nm of torque at 4,700 rpm.

3.3 The technology behind the figures

3.4 VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift, Electronic Control)
A key element of i-VTEC technology remains Honda’s long-established VTEC system which is able
to adjust the lift and opening duration of the valves. In this application, the system uses two rocker
arms per pair of intake valves. During low rpm operation, intake air is drawn almost exclusively
through the primary intake valve, thereby creating a very strong swirl effect to maximise combustion
and to produce abundant low-rpm torque. At higher rpm, the secondary rocker arm engages the
primary one causing both intake valves to open for the same lift and duration, substantially
increasing airflow into the cylinder and boosting performance.
3.5 Variable Timing Control (VTC)
Complementing the VTEC mechanism is Variable Timing Control that works by taking into
consideration engine load These systems work in concert under the close control of the engine
management system to produce a remarkably broad and smooth power band with exceptional
torque and horsepower.
VTC controls the phasing of the inlet camshaft, resulting in a number of benefits including improved
charging efficiency and combustion, higher torque, reduced intake resistance and improved
efficiency of exhaust gas recirculation. Based on input from a position sensor located at the rear
end of the inlet camshaft, together with a whole range of other data, the engine control unit varies
the inlet camshaft position relative to that of the exhaust camshaft by means of a hydraulically
driven, compact vane-type pump located on the front end of the inlet camshaft. In this way it can
advance and retard the opening of the inlet valves.
During the periods of high engine load that occur during acceleration, VTC is set at a relatively
small degree of valve overlap which provides the best output, the valve opening angle utilising the
inertia of the intake air. In addition, as engine speed builds, the VTEC mechanism switches from the
low speed cam to the high speed cam (ie optimal torque to optimal power), but with the same
degree of overlap.
Alternatively, at high engine speeds in situations where the engine is not under heavy load, for
example during motorway cruising, there is much greater valve overlap and this is advantageous in
reducing pumping losses, maximising the exhaust gas recirculation effect for reduced Nox levels
and providing the best balance between fuel consumption and output.
Finally, at idle and low engine speeds during light load conditions, inlet valve opening is retarded
for minimal overlap, generating strong swirl and therefore stable combustion.

VTC (Variable Timing Control)
The i-VTEC system adds camshaft VTC (Variable Timing
Control) system to VTEC for continuously variable camshaft
phasing across the engine’s entire power band. As engine
rpm builds, a VTC actuator – controlled by an engine-control
unit that monitors cam position, ignition timing, exhaust
emissions and throttle position – advances or retards the
intake cam throughout a 50 degree range, optimising engine
output and reducing emissions.

During typical operation, the intake camshaft timing is almost fully retarded at idle to help provide
more stable idling while reducing the exhaust emissions (Nox). As rpm increases, the intake
camshaft is advanced, opening the intake valve sooner and providing additional valve overlap. This
results in increased fuel economy (by reducing pumping losses) and a further reduction in exhaust
emissions (by creating a large internal exhaust gas re-circulation effect).
Also, to generate additional power throughout the rev range, the intake camshaft is continuously
varying the amount of advance or retard, instantly adjusting to provide additional power as
required by the driver. (see the next page)

3.6 Emissions
A crucial element in meeting tough international emissions standards is to bring the catalytic
converter up to its effective operating temperature as quickly as possible. This is achieved by
retarding the ignition timing after engine start to help promote rapid warming; in addition, the
exhaust system is of the low heat mass type, with a dual wall construction, for the same purpose.
Furthermore, the exhaust manifold is mounted on the back of the engine, reducing the distance to
the catalytic converter, so less heat is lost, thus increasing efficiency after a cold start. The 4-2
exhaust manifold flows into an exhaust pipe structure which features a dual wall construction, which
excels in efficiency.
New catalytic converter technology has been applied to the Accord Euro. This, combined with the
improved electronic control system, helps to further reduce precious metal usage, as well as
meeting the EU2005 emission requirements ahead of their introduction.
3.7 New 6-speed manual transmission
The six-speed manual transmission has been newly developed for the Accord
Euro with an emphasis on lighter, more fluid changes and optimised ratios, as
well as improvements in packaging and efficiency.
Gear selection now benefits from multi-cone synchronisers on first and second
gears, reducing the effort required by over 30 per cent, while quicker changes
result from shorter shift strokes, reduced by 15 mm from third to second and
from second to first gears. These changes are complemented by a pleasant
clutch action that results from a reduced pedal force and a shortened pedal
stroke.
Gear ratios have been carefully selected to exploit the torque characteristics of the engines to the
full, achieving an excellent balance in fuel efficiency, noise and vibration performance together with
linear acceleration characteristics.
The extra gear of the 6-speed manual transmission allows a wider spread of ratios and together
with a final drive ratio of 4.388 delivers lower gearing for superb flexibility.
Overall gearbox width is now 360 mm, down 20 mm, while the weight is 57.9 kg for the 6-speed
box. The new design also makes its contribution to the Accord Euro’s overall refinement thanks to a
high rigidity, high damping casing, and a clutch with a spring structure that helps to reduce torsion
during deceleration.
3.8 5-speed automatic now with shift-hold control
A major change for this model is the 5-speed AT adopted in place of the
conventional 4-speed AT, with the objective of providing both fun-to-drive
qualities and excellent fuel economy. Driving enjoyment is enhanced further by
sequential shift.
The use of low friction clutches for all gears and the super-thin, highly efficient
torque converter in the 5-speed automatic transmission contributes to the
Accord Euro’s excellent fuel economy. It is also remarkably space efficient
thanks, among other things, to a double row type idler gear and the compact
layout.
In automatic mode, Honda’s intelligent Grade Logic Control system provides a series of programs
that recognise different styles of driving and varying road conditions to ensure seamless progress,
particularly over hilly routes where optimised gear selection is essential. The transmission also now
features automatic gear shift-hold control, a system designed to enhance the sporty driving
experience over winding roads. Highly refined and responsive gearshifts now characterise the
automatic transmission, thanks to improved levels of control provided by the drive-by-wire throttle
system.

The previous Accord saloon ushered in a major evolution in Honda suspension design with the
move away from a conventional all-round double wishbone set up to the greater complexity and
sophistication of a multi-link system at the rear. As the double wishbone front and 5-link double
wishbone rear suspension delivers an exceptionally smooth ride, precise, stable handling, as well as
packaging benefits, the core qualities of the chassis have been carried over into the new Accord
Euro.
4.1 Further development of a tried and tested design
A number of revisions to the suspension geometry have been introduced, aimed at further
enhancing steering stability and ride comfort to reward the enthusiast driver with more neutral
handling characteristics, while retaining high levels of refinement.
Among the changes are a revised roll centre height, improved front/rear camber changes, and
increased anti-dive and anti-lift angles. Increased capacity of the front compliance bush in the lower
wishbone of the front suspension increases ride comfort, while overall stability gets a boost from the
replacement of the rear suspension iron knuckle/spindle/hub bearing assembly with an aluminium
knuckle and integrated bearing unit. This increases rigidity at the wheel by 50 per cent, at the same
time reducing weight of the knuckle by 30 per cent.
The excellent aerodynamics and reduced lift achieved by Honda’s stylists also add to the Accord
Euro’s surefootedness, while some of the best bodyshell dynamic stiffness qualities in the class
(greater lateral responsiveness at the front and improved stability at the rear) deliver heightened
responses to driver input and pin-sharp precision on the road.
The overall effect is to provide chassis dynamics that feel secure and solid at high speed.
4.2 Double wishbone front suspension
The design of the front suspension, like that at the
rear, allows the spring-mounting points to be located
fairly high on the spring/shock absorber assembly,
and large diameter, lower rate springs to be used,
resulting in a softer, more compliant ride without
compromising handling characteristics. The raised
location also allows the front side rails to be larger in
cross section thereby enhancing frontal impact
performance. A relatively low front roll centre brings
reduced understeer, increased traction under hard
cornering and better front-to-rear handling balance.
Unlike the rear sub-frame which is rigidly mounted for
high speed stability, the front sub-frame is cushioned
with rubber bushings that allow it to move fractionally
in two planes. This measure significantly reduces the
level of road noise reaching occupants.

4.3 5-link double wishbone rear suspension
The rear suspension with its two diagonal links and three lateral links offers precise camber and toe
control, excellent turn in, ride compliance and space efficiency. The two widely spaced diagonal
links deal with most of the braking forces fed from the wheel, while the three lateral links are used
to control the camber and toe changes brought about by the lateral forces generated when
cornering.
Since the diagonal links do not have to deal with major side forces, they can be fitted with soft
rubber bushings which help to absorb suspension impacts and lessen the amount of road noise
transmitted to the interior of the car. On the other hand, stiffer bushes used at the inboard end of
the three lateral links are able to absorb the high cornering forces and contribute to camber and
toe control.
4.4 Diagonal links: enhancing ride comfort
The two diagonal links form a Watt linkage when viewed from
the side of the car: the front trailing link attaches to the wheel
upright below the axle, while the rear leading link attaches
above the axle. Together they control the upward movement of
the wheel. When striking a bump, the arc of the rear wheels is
such that they move towards the rear of the car and the large
mechanical compliance decreases the amount of force
transmitted into the body structure aiding ride comfort.
4.5 Three lateral links: controlling camber and toe-in
The upper and lower links control camber when cornering so
that the tyre contact patch remains flat for maximum adhesion
and the shock absorbers work at their most effective. The third
lateral link – located behind the other two and attached to the
back edge of the upright – controls the amount of toe-in as the
car corners to give a small amount of passive rear wheel steer.
4.6 Crisp rack and pinion set up
All Accord Euro models feature a hydraulic power assisted rack and pinion steering system with a
crisp, dynamic action; the system’s linear characteristics ensure that steering angle is more or less
directly proportional to input by the driver.
4.7 Vehicle Stability Assist
All Accord Euros are equipped with Honda’s own 4-channel Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system
which is designed to assist the driver in maintaining control during cornering, acceleration and
sudden manoeuvres by applying brake force to the right or left front wheel as necessary and
managing the throttle and ignition systems.
VSA also has a traction control function
whereby it detects wheel slip under
acceleration and coordinates the use of
braking and retardation of the ignition to
regain traction. In situations where the driven
wheels are on surfaces with different levels of
traction, such as a partially wet road surface,
the system applies braking action to the
wheel that's slipping, allowing the tyre with
better grip to move the vehicle. In addition,
the system reduces engine output to
minimise wheelspin.

By monitoring input from a series of vehicle sensors, VSA calculates a predicted range of vehicle
response while constantly monitoring the vehicle's actual response and the driver's control inputs. If
the actual response is outside the predicted response range, as when cornering forces exceed the
tyres’ performance, VSA automatically intervenes with corrective action. In the case of oversteer
(which may lead to a spin), VSA applies braking to the outside front wheel to counter the yawing
tendency. On the other hand, if understeer is detected, VSA applies braking to the inside rear wheel
and reduces engine power to turn the car back on to the intended course.
Unlike some vehicle stability systems, which can seem intrusive to enthusiast drivers, the Accord
Euro’s VSA is calibrated to add to stability and predictability, without stifling the driving enjoyment of
the carefully engineered chassis. An indicator light flashes on the instrument panel while the system
is actively enhancing the stability of the vehicle. A cockpit switch is provided to disconnect the VSA.
4.8 Braking system with ABS, EBD and emergency brake assist
All Accord Euro models are equipped with ABS
and, for optimum performance, Electronic Brake
force Distribution (EBD) which adjusts front-torear brake effort to achieve maximum braking
performance and stability. At the rear, a selectlow braking strategy is also used to help maintain
directional stability in slippery driving. In the event
of a rear wheel beginning to lock-up, triggering a
pressure modulation at that wheel, brake pressure
is also diminished at the adjoining wheel to help
preserve the rear axle's lateral stability. Further
security is provided by the emergency brake assist
system which automatically increases braking
output when emergency conditions are detected
from the manner of the driver’s input to the pedal.
To provide a consistent, firmer and predictable level of braking feel under all conditions, the new
Accord Euro is equipped with a shorter ratio brake pedal (down from 3.8 to 2.6) and the tandem
master power unit of the previous model is replaced with a single 10 inch unit which increases
braking force, at the same time reducing weight.
The Accord Euro comes with large brake discs front and rear.

5.0 Safety and Security
5.1 A continuing trend: high levels of protection
The Accord Euro and the body structure has been comprehensively engineered to provide a high
level of protection to both occupants and pedestrians in the event of an impact. As well as the
conventional EU side and offset barrier tests the Accord Euro has been fully tested in the pole test at
29 km/h recently introduced to Euro NCAP.
The Accord Euro has received a Euro NCAP 4 stars (occupant) and 2 stars (passengers) rating,
along with a NHTSA (USA) 5 stars (frontal impact), 5 stars (side impact, front occupants), 4 stars
(side impact, rear occupants) rating.
The new Accord Euro, like all other Hondas, was put through its paces at Honda’s own state of the
art crash test centre in a wide range of accident scenarios including vehicle-to-vehicle collisions,
allowing a full analysis of its behaviour in all ‘real-world’ situations.
The previous Accord range offered a particularly strong safety cell thanks to a number of key design
elements such as large, straight front side frame rails that allowed greater control of frontal impact
energy. The new Accord Euro adopts and builds upon many of those elements and additional
measures include:

The design of the airbags provides a larger protection area than is the case with many other
systems on the market. The fully opened curtain extends along the length of the side windows and
to a depth in excess of the glass area. For front seat occupants the inflated airbag component
covers a large proportion of the window to allow for a variety of seat positions; in the rear the
airbag covers a comparable area to provide the same levels of protection.
5.3 Keeping costs down
In the quest for reduced accident repair costs, wherever possible the body structure is designed to
contain the spread of impact energy, including front and rear structures designed to dissipate
energy and prevent damage extending back to the bulkheads. In terms of minor collision damage,
the repositioning of the bumper relative to engine componentry by extending the bumper beam
helps to minimise replacement costs, while the relatively high position of the tail lights means they
are located outside of the area most commonly damaged by rear end knocks and bumps.
5.4 Pedestrian protection paramount
The new Accord Euro incorporates many of the pedestrian-protection design features already in
other Honda models including the Civic, Jazz and CR-V. Items include:

Innovative weight saving measures
Increasing pressures on the environment demand solutions to the disposal of products that have
reached the end of their useful life and cars, of course, are no exception. The variety of materials
used in their construction and the difficulty and time required to separate them during dismantling
present a particular challenge, but Honda continues to research and develop ways of dealing with
these issues, not only in response to EU vehicle end-of-life directives, but also as part of the
company’s voluntary action plan established in March 1998 to improve recycling potential.
6.1 The move to recyclable plastics: key technology to minimise PVC usage
Honda has been taking every possible step to maximise recycling potential, and in the new Accord
Euro, the use of PVC materials for both exterior and interior plastics parts has been drastically
reduced, being replaced by more recyclable and environmentally-friendly materials.
The main parts of the instrument panel for example are composed of easy-to-recycle olefin
compounds, while vibration welding of the components has eliminated the use of screws, again for
easier recycling. In addition, a newly developed pre-coating technology has helped to achieve a
new method of soft pad forming on the instrument panel, without use of an adhesive spray, for the
first time in the world.
Similarly, PVC door linings are replaced with a thermoplastic elastomer, characterised by reduced
compression set and a lower density. On the shift knob, styrene rubber is blended into the base
thermoplastic urethane elastomer to produce a more mouldable material. Other items that no
longer use PVC include the door mouldings and rear door quarter seal.
6.2 Virtually lead free with the exception of exempted items
It is a similar story with lead usage and apart from exempted items such as the battery and the use
of PZT (lead zirconate titanate) in the engine, the Accord Euro is virtually lead free, in full
compliance with the above-mentioned EU directives.
In addition Honda has made efforts to reduce lead contained in some of the exempted items.
Examples are the use of a lead-free coating in the body preparation, the switch from a leadcontaining adhesive to a lead-free one with an improved polymer structure for metal/rubber
bonding in the engine mounts and suspension bushes, and lead-free wheel balance weights.
6.3 Recycling of bumpers
Bumper collection continues to remain an important element in the
overall recycling potential of the car. Once collected, the material
can be crushed and washed, then supplemented with other materials
such as glass fibre or highly fluid polypropylene – depending on final
application – to provide an extruded material which can be cut into
pellets and subsequently used for other applications. In the new
Accord Euro, applications for this recycled material include the
bumper side spacer (0.2 kg) and the aerodynamic undercover
(1.5kg).

6.4 How to lose weight
The requirement for safer structures, greater refinement and more equipment in car design
invariably carries with it a penalty in terms of additional weight. This fact of life tests the ingenuity of
the design team to come up with ways of compensating for such unavoidable increases, since any
reduction will help to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
Each innovation may make only a small contribution, but taken together, the savings can be highly
significant. In the new Accord Euro a typical example of the measures adopted to save weight
includes the selection of an alternative alloy with an improved crystal structure for the connecting
rod bolts; this develops greater strength and thus reduces the weight of the connecting rod by 11%.
Elsewhere, the sound-absorbing melt sheet material used in a variety of positions within the
bodyshell uses a new composition with the incorporation of a weight-reducing filler, less damping
filler and greater amounts of resin component. The weight savings are achieved without
compromising sound absorption.
For some models the alloy wheels are thinner and therefore lighter by 8 per cent thanks to the use
of the latest ‘multi-gate’ production technology: introduction of the molten metal into the casting at
multiple points is followed by rapid solidification, to create a material with a fine micro structure. Its
greater toughness reduces the material requirement as a result.
Other examples include the use of aluminium for the rear suspension knuckle and the ABS
modulator bracket, achieving a saving of around 40 to 50 per cent..
