The Illawarra Folk Club is a nonprofit incorporated association with the objective to present and encourage folk music and folklore as it exists in Australia today, in all its most genuine, and valuable musical, social, historical, cultural and pleasurable forms. Frankyln B. Paverty The Honey Badgers plus Members $10 | Non-Members $15 Youth (U18) / Child (U12) free 7.30pm CITY DIGGERS WOLLONGONG A band that is no stranger to audiences at Folk Festival will be performing at the Club City Diggers at 7.30pm) on Saturday June 21st. They have been around for a long time as you’ll note when they all walk on stage using their instruments as walking sticks. They are of course Franklyn B Paverty, veterans of many a festival and also the opening of Parliament House, Canberra. to appear at the nation's major folk and entertainment venues. The band has made nine albums (5 CDs and 4 LPs) and many TV and radio appearances, including the ABC TV series Peach's Gold. They are fine exponents of traditional Australian bush music varied with folk, country and occasional swing, blues, jug band or old rock 'n' roll music (Is there much else except head-banging) Each year on Australia Day from 2002 to 2007 and 2010 to 2012, Paverty performed at The Lodge for the Prime Minister's Australia Day celebrations. In late 2003, presented Australian music to guests at a lunch for visiting US President George W. Bush.” (wouldn’t skite about that one!) •Folk Club Concert Performer enquiries Russell Hannah, 02 4297 1777 [email protected] Here’s what they say about themselves“a spectacular combination of talent, skill, enthusiasm and experience over 30 years performing, mostly in and around Canberra •2nd FOLK by the Sea in Kiama 26-28 September Artist applications have closed (30 March 2014) Franklyn B Paverty is one of the most enduring folk bands. Since the mid 1970s Paverty has performed in Canberra and the nearby region and travelled extensively •30th Illawarra Folk Festival at Bulli Showground 15 to 18 January 2015 Artist applications closed 30 May 2014 •Newsletter Contributions David De Santi PO Box 17, Albion Park NSW 2527 mob: 0409 57 1788 [email protected] •Folk Club Email List If you would like to keep up to date on folk happenings why not join the Folk Club Email List? Please provide addresses to: [email protected] 2 Ju ne 2014 ILL AWARR A FOLK CLUB NEWSLETTER The band has been part of the celebrations marking 10th (see here), 20th and 25th anniversary of its opening (in 1998, 2008 and 2013 respectively). Currently, members of Franklyn B Paverty include Mal Bennett, Bob Buckley, Simone Dawson, Graham Chalker, Peter Logue, Bob Rodgers and Bryan Rae. Something else good has to come out of Canberra besides besides the Federal Highway and Bad budgets (Which are not good) And it is, of course, the Honey Badgers. According to Wikipedia, “the honey badger does not closely resemble other badger species; instead, it bears more anatomical similarities to weasels. It has few natural predators because of its thick skin and ferocious defensive abilities.“ Although our Australian Honey Badgers are sometimes known to possess some of these characteristics, their skillful musicianship, audience interaction and songwriting skills distinguish them from their African counterparts. The Honey Badgers have, for decades, been individually camouflaged within the comfort and safety of other bands - until now. Craig and Simone Badger are united with Peter “Wolverine” Logue (accordion, mandolin), Rita “Ratel” Woolhouse (cello) and Zena “Polecat” Armstrong (percussion and whistle) in presenting a wide variety of roots inspired songs and instrumentals. Of course, having read the above you can see why both Paverty and the Honey Badgers are quite at home in Canberra. Cost of the night is an amazing $3 with a $7 co-payment for members and $8 with a $7 co-payment for others ie $10/$15. The Mystery Performer will be there of course and we can guarantee he/she they are not from Canberra. GOOD TUNES SESSION 2-3.30pm SUNDAY 22 JUNE Venue is Figgy Bowlo, The Avenue, Figtree. CONCERT | FRIDAY 4 JULY 4 Pack Concert Three Sixty, Illawarra Flame Three, The Humphreys plus 1 Members $10 | Non-Members $15 Youth (U18) / Child (U12) free 7.30pm CITY DIGGERS WOLLONGONG Three-Sixty is a trio who all grew up during the 1960s, loving the folk music that was so much a part of that decade. All began playing guitar and singing in their teens, performing the songs they enjoyed listening to. Now they have come together to bring back those wonderful songs. create a fusion of blues, folk and trad. The lads are venturing into Richard Thompson (Waltzing's for Dreamers), Steve Earle's Galway Girl, Bob Dylan songs, Riders on the Storm with the King of the Fairies, Cajun and some original songs! David De Santi, Artistic Director of the Illawarra Folk Festival and accordionista, has been hosting Good Tunes Sessions for a number of years in the Illawarra and at folk festivals around the country. The plan is to have a casual afternoon of traditional folk tunes and songs played with acoustic instruments. These sort of gatherings are called a ‘Session’. Sessions are a traditional form of socialising with the joy of music. Playing music in a social convivial and relaxed acoustic atmosphere is very soothing for the musical soul. You’ll hear tunes from Ireland, Scotland, Italy, USA, France, French Canada, Sweden, Spain, Australia and beyond! Dancing is optional. Acoustic musicians are welcome to join in with sheet music provided for the tunes and songs. The session is hosted by David De Santi, accordionista from the Wongawilli Bush Band, The Con Artists and I Viaggiatori. Illawarra Flame Three is a group formed in mid 2011 by Tony Madden to seek a niche market in the Illawarra for a small group playing vintage acoustic jazz and some more recent popular music with a splash of folk included. The Humphreys is a new band of experienced musicians. Steve McClure and Brett Sergeant from My Secret Window are joined Vic 'the stick' Jankulovski and Humph D Bear De Santi on accordion to ILL AWARR A FOLK CLUB NEWSLETTER June 2 01 4 3 Bring: Music stand, Good Tunes Session Book (if you have one, copies will be available), instrument and voice Further enquiries about the session with David: [email protected] FOLK FESTIVAL RETURNS TO KIAMA The Illawarra Folk Club will stage the second FOLK BY THE SEA at Kiama Showground on September 26-28. Ju ne 2014 An update - Mark has had a major operation and is now in Figtree Private Hospital where he is recovering. Get well Mark. 1. You need to be a financial member of the Illawarra Folk Club 6 A report on our esteemed treasurer ‘Old Moneybags’ Mark Doran. You might have missed him sitting on the door collecting your entrance fee lately. No! He hasn’t absconded with club funds and gone to South America, nor has he run away from home and bought a mansion in Majorca. In fact he heeded Joe Hockey’s advice that we all had to do the heavy lifting. Mark of course, took this to heart (Joe is such a persuasive character) and helped his mate move furniture. The result was that he fractured a vertebrate in his back and has been laid up in hospital for a few weeks. No disability assistance thanks to Joe either. Anyway we all wish him an exit from hospital, an alleviation from the severe pain he’s suffering and hope that he gets back to being Mr ‘Money Bags’ as soon as possible. :|||= ILL AWARR A FOLK CLUB NEWSLETTER Alison Rowe from Mount Kembla a long time member of the club sadly died from cancer on the 4 June. Alison and partner Allen Clark have been great members and supporters of the club for over 25 years and Alison was, along with Allen responsible for the Statewide broadcasts of the Festival that we did from the Jamberoo Pub on the ABC in the early 90s. She was also one of the people responsible for the first festival CD we produced, ‘JamberooThe First Ten Years’in 1995. Ally was a Copywrite Authority and an Artist- A goodly contingent of Folk Club Members attended her funeral and then her wake at her old stomping ground- the Mount Kembla Pub. All our condolences go to her partner of 35 years Allen Clark and her family (her brother came out from Luxemburg and managed to see her before she died). :|||= On a more positive note it’s a welcome out of hospital for Val Mcgarry who is the club member who organises us to have Eleanor McEvoy. Our best wishes for a complete recovery to Val. :|||= If you missed the Tom Lewis Concert in Late April you were clearly a fool to yourself and a burden to others. It was a magic night of a bloke with a magic Voice and a magic stage presence (I think I’m waxing lyrical but it was a night to wax lyrical about) Anyway Tom has sent us this letter “Dear Russ, we're back home (about 80 hours now) after a really great trip. We've had to post almost a dozen CDs back to Australia!!! In all honesty, we had been contemplating this being our last visit to Australia we're not getting any younger, y'know. ;-)) - although we're quite entranced with New Zealand. However; the (musical and personal) reaction, in both places, has been so positive that we're re-thinking that. We'll let you know what plans may be afoot. Between visiting friends, folk festival commitments and a folk club tour in the late summer, life is busy... so we'd better get on with it. All for now. Thanks again, Russ, T&L.” Naturally we would have Tom back anytime. :|||= Whoever tweaked that twitter might be in some strife. Address-in-Reply, a bit unruly, so I heard, Someone was reported as using a four letter word. Behaviour in the Parliament, no doubt would be bleaker, If it were not controlled by a wise, bipartisan Speaker. I am indebted to a Scottish Friend for this one. Our resident Scottish person, Monty, has taken it to heart so be warned. :|||= Lolas Keg Night which was held at the festival (twice) has now definite dates for later in the year: Merrigong Theatre, Wollongong, 9, 10, 11 (2 shows) October NSW Teachers Federation auditorium, Sydney 17, 18 October and 25 October (tbc) More details later. :|||= Bob Dylan is doing another tour. Sadly we wont have him at the folk club- in fact he won’t be in Wollongong at all. He will however be in Sydney and here are the details SYDNEY WED 3 & THU 4 SEPTEMBER | STATE THEATRE :|||= Welcome to our new members this month. We hope you all enjoy our clubs activities, concerts and information- Happy Folking. Mary Hawkins, Kanahooka Beth and the Brave, Clifton Vic Paul & Gayle Grey, Thiroul :|||= Congratulations to another of our members, Carol Crikshank who was presented with a volunteers award for 18 years as a community transport driver and fundraiser for local refugee support organisation SCARF. She’s done a fair bit of volunteering for the Folk Club as well :|||= Paul Spencer, one of our esteemed members is running a "Life and Times" themed Singing Session 4th Friday of the month, at Bulli contact Paul Spencer, 0477 00 86 86 [email protected], or see http:// paul-spencer.net/life-and-times :|||= We had a great House Concert with Blue the Shearer on Sunday 25th May with a most appreciative crowd. Some of the audience got up and did a poem as well so it a great afternoon with a break in the middle for a dose of Blue’s Stew and Mairi’s Carrot Cake. As he’s 87 he reckons its his last concert but we told him not to be such a pessimist and we were going to get him back again in 6 months. BUDGET 2014 I've read the papers, watched TV, listened to the news, Sat through countless critiques, comments, and reviews. Certainly, they've touched on petrol tax, and cars, But I haven't seen a great big tax, on great big fat cigars. The States seem quite unhappy. They've been treated with ignore, It seems that Federal largesse wont be coming any more. From the Federal point of view, State finance is abundant … But the States now seem to fear that they'll be made redundant. There have been some mutterings about the end results, But at least the States might start acting like adults. There have been references to health, and I did hear mention, That some would be affected by changes to the pension. And those who go to doctors will bear some fiscal scars, Apparently, these brain waves came, whilst smoking big cigars. Or they could have come from a brand new budget ploy … A treasurer, come jester, dancing from sheer joy to a favourite ditty … 'This is the Best Day of my Life' I have recurring nightmares. I've not had them before, About youth unemployment, and the disenfranchised poor. The elderly, the very ill, suffering the ravages, Visited upon them by autocratic savages. “Crisis is upon us” the PM tells us so, Backed up by the Treasurer, and so the way to go Is to whack the whackable. That makes perfect sense, The whackables don't have the clout to threaten Governments. Still, they seem to have the balance right, with the accent shifting From the rich unto the poor to do the heavy lifting. Medicare and ABC, they claim they're under stress. No promises were broken, so they'll have to do with less. I watched a bit of Q & A, and thought … there's something wrong, Sure, the Treasurer was there, apparently on song, And suddenly, it struck me … I know what it are … Joe Hockey should be smoking a great big fat cigar. August 2009 form Judy Cork, Membership Secretary Newsletters, Technology & A Spider My wife’s embraced technology, Her head’s in an I-Cloud, And when I say - “you’re just a nerd" She says it makes her proud. The house is full of I-phones, I-tunes are everywhere, When the conversation turns to Apps, It’s more than I can bear. We don’t have any books no more, Just Kindles, they’re the rage, She says reading books is tiresome , For you have to turn a page. When she sees me read the paper, And sees me post a letter, She says, I am a Luddite, As there’s ways that are much better. She said I should try I-Pods And this verse I should e-mail ya She’s embarrassed that she’s married to an electronic failure. We were sitting in our sunroom I think she was on Twitter I said please pass the folk newsletter dear, I thought I heard her titter. She looked at me with a silly grin And said I was quite sad, She said - “Newsletters are now quite passé, Here try my new I-Pad.” I reached and took the I-Pad I still knew I had to ‘git ‘im’, And I’ll tell you now that spider, Just didn’t know what ‘hit ‘im’ August 2009 form Bigruss July 2012 If paying by Credit Card you can fax this form to 1300 887 034 otherwise post to: Illawarra Folk Club Inc., PO Box 5289, Wollongong, NSW 2500 August 2009 form ILL AWARR A FOLK CLUB NEWSLETTER June 2 0 14 11
