THE BEST LEADERS & GUIDES
TAKE IT FROM OUR GUESTS
DINING…WESTERN STYLE
Many things set Western apart. First and foremost are
our guides. Since most of our guides return year after
year, we choose only a handful of the very best from
hundreds of applicants. Then, through one of the most
rigorous training programs in the industry, each of our
guides receives hundreds of hours of training in river
safety, culinary arts, and natural history interpretation
— assuring you the highest possible levels of both service and security. Repeatedly, our guests tell us their
guides were the best part of their trip.
“This was an incredible trip for our family. We have not stopped talking
about how much fun we had and how great the people were that we
met. As great as everything was, truly the guides were the key to making
this trip so fantastic. They were all absolutely amazing. They were not
only expert rafters, but great cooks, funny, outgoing, and kind. We all
miss them. We have so many wonderful memories. This trip was a true
gift. We will treasure it for the rest of our lives. Thank you for a family
vacation of a lifetime.”
JEAN CORTES, Connecticut: Cataract Canyon
Rafting creates big appetites and Western knows just
how to satisfy them. At sun-up, you might think you’re
still dreaming when you see plates of steaming flapjacks, fresh fruit and scrambled eggs, but it’s the way
every morning on the river begins. Lunch will likely
include meats and cheeses, delicious breads, along with
crisp vegetables and a variety of spreads. Tasty chicken
and veggie wraps or perhaps chicken salad pitas may
also be part of Western’s mid-day buffet. Every night is
different, but the dinner menu will likely include grilled
chicken breasts, tender steaks, pasta, or fresh fish.
“I did a trip last year with another company and only wish I could
have found Western a year ago. You are truly a class act. The equipment was fantastic (cots, folding chairs and new clip tents), food was
great, and the guides for sure made the trip. I would not hesitate to
recommend Western to anyone and everyone.”

“This trip was truly life changing for me. I know, it sounds trite, but it
was. I had never camped, and frankly, was not what I would consider an
adventure traveler. This trip was wonderful. Our guides were terrific.
They knew their business, did it well (both on and off the river), and
made me feel comfortable and safe. The sky was better than anything you
could get in a hotel room!”

Although every one of Western’s rafting
vacations and River Ranch Adventures
would create an unforgettable family
experience, some are more suitable than
others depending on your situation. To
help you decide, we have highlighted a
few of our most popular trips for families.

WITH A DIFFERENCE
Quality Family Time…Together
A rafting vacation with Western River Expeditions has all the ingredients
for an outstanding family experience: water, adventure, fun, learning, and
for the younger kids, the chance to stay dirty. Parents are guaranteed
some quality time with the kids – away from phones, computers and TV –
plus quality time together as Western’s designated fun director entertains
the kids with games and activities.
Fun for Everyone
Because Western’s designated family trips typically include an oar boat, paddle boat and inflatable kayaks, kids and parents can all share the experience
and each gets exactly what they want out of it, whether they choose to tame
the rapids on their own in a small boat or simply hold on in a big boat.
Highlights Include:
» Warmer water perfect for swimming
» Guided oar boats and inflatable kayaks
» Excellent hikes for kids
» Designated fun director
» Over 60 moderate rapids
» Special rates for youth 16 and under

There was a very personal feel to the whole
trip, the river guides did everything they
could to make the whole trip an experience of
a lifetime. The fun didn’t stop when the rafting finished for the day, many an hour was
spent singing as the sun set down below the
canyon walls - Can’t wait to go back!

Cataract Canyon Trip
My family and I just returned from this trip. It
was life changing. This was the best family
vacation we have ever had. My son who is 16
loved it as much as we did. It was perfect
from start to finish. From our first contact
with Western River for reservations to arriving home, it was fantastic. We opted for the
extra day at Bar 10 ranch and were not disappointed. The folks at Bar 10 are the nicest,
friendliest and openhearted people we have
met in a long time. Coming from the east, it
was a real eye opener.

Desolation Canyon, deeper than Grand Canyon, is hardly desolate with its big sandy beaches, sparkling side streams, shady
stands of huge Cottonwoods, and abundant wildlife. A century
ago, this picture-perfect playground was a hiding place for
Butch Cassidy and his gang of bank robbers. Now, with familyfriendly vacation rates, we’ve made it easy for adventurous
families to escape here and play. Ride some 60 fun-filled rapids
in a rowboat with our guide doing all the work, or take a turn

CATARACT CANYON ADVENTURE ~ 4 DAY TRIP
Where the Colorado and Green rivers meet in a timeless setting
called “The Confluence,” Cataract Canyon begins. Bolstered by
the Green, the Colorado doubles its force, carving a deep 100mile-long chasm through the heart of Canyonlands National
Park. Calm stretches of river wind through soul-stirring
canyons and dazzling geologic formations. Ancient Native
American ruins, fascinating petroglyphs, and magnificent
waterfalls beckon your arrival. Surrender your senses as some
28 rapids take giant steps downward in one of the river’s steepest stretches, rivaling the big water of the Grand Canyon. 

»
The excitement and beauty of the Colorado River through
Cataract Canyon draw adventurers from around the world.
DAY ONE AND TWO » Glide along on smooth-flowing currents winding through Canyonlands
National Park. Sculpted sandstone, isolated buttes, and red-rock castles offer unparalleled vistas
for picture taking. Hike to ancient ruins and writings, a breathtaking overlook high above the
mighty Colorado, and perhaps powerful Indian Creek Falls. Capture the excitement to come with
rapids before camp on the second day.
As the canyon deepens to 2,000 feet, the mood of the river changes drastically. In
one of the Colorado’s most notorious stretches called the “Big Drops”, your raft plunges 30 feet in
a matter of minutes through rapids that can match those of the Grand Canyon in power and difficulty. After the whitewater, perhaps explore the tranquil pools and enchanting falls of Dark Canyon.
Relax and relish a night of camping where the Colorado River meets Lake Powell.

plateau above the Colorado River. Your transition from civilization to wilderness includes horseback trail rides, skeet shooting, chuck wagon dinner and evening entertainment before settling
into bed in the lodge or outdoors in a covered wagon. After a big country breakfast, a helicopter
takes you deep into the canyon where your raft awaits.

With its sparkling clear waters and challenging rapids, the Middle
Fork drops over 3,000 feet in 100 miles of breathtaking wilderness. A
spectacular forest of fir and spruce is home to abundant wildlife, Indian rock paintings, and pioneer homesteads. You’ll relax in hot
springs, visit beautiful creeks, hike to magnificent waterfalls, and
camp in mountain meadows. In early season, high water is suited for
the hearty adventurer. By July, moderate technical whitewater is good
for all experience levels. The Middle Fork is a blue ribbon trout stream
and July through September is also the season for the upriver Salmon
and Steelhead runs, so fishing is good, to say the least. 

Rich in scenic wonders and history, the Main Salmon drops 1,200 feet
in 89 miles, creating exciting, but moderate whitewater. The bluegreen waters, known as the “River of No Return,” warm up to
very comfortable temperatures in July and August and offer calm
sections and deep pools perfect for relaxing, swimming, and simply absorbing the country’s splendor. You’ll enjoy sandy camping
beaches backed up to pine forests. The Salmon runs through the
heart of the largest road-less wilderness in the lower 48 states. It’s
a country of pines and granite mountains where wildlife abounds
and rock paintings left by ancient inhabitants still exist. 

The rapids on each trip vary, depending on the time of
year and speed of the water. Western matches its rafts
to the flow of the river to provide the best experience.
For example, a moderate late-season rapid taken in a
small inflatable kayak can be just as thrilling as a monster rapid navigated in a J-rig.
On the Green River, Westwater, Salmon River, & Cataract
(later in the summer), guides adeptly
maneuver three to six-passenger rowboats. These specially designed 18-foot
rafts are “self-bailing” which means
that you’ll never touch a bail bucket,
except for an impromptu water fight!

Bigger rapids demand bigger rafts such as Western’s
patented J-Rig. Where the Colorado River carves
through Cataract Canyon earlier in the summer and on
our Grand Canyon 3, 4, and 6-day trips, J-Rigs are the
vessel of choice for maximum
excitement and safety. Environmentally friendly, quiet 4-stroke
motors power these rugged rafts
specially built for Western.
GUESTS RAVE ABOUT OUR RAFTS »
“Your J-Rig and all of the equipment you supplied were top
quality. The design of your J-Rig provided both maximum
comfort for the less adventuresome and exhilarating thrills
for the white water fans.”

FIRST TIME RAFTING?
If you’ve never run a river or slept
outdoors, you are like many of our
guests. Relax. We design our trips
to be comfortable and accessible
to most everyone, regardless of
experience.
LOOKING FOR RIVER RATINGS?
Please visit www.westernriver.com
When water levels are suitable, two-person inflatable
kayaks let you challenge the rapids on your own during
Green River and Salmon River trips. When you’re ready
to kick back and relax, simply return to your rowboat,
stretch out in the sun, and
let your guide do the work.

Bigger rapids demand bigger rafts such as Western’s
patented J-Rig. Where the Colorado River carves
through Cataract Canyon earlier in the summer and on
our Grand Canyon 3, 4, and 6-day trips, J-Rigs are the
vessel of choice for maximum
excitement and safety. Environmentally friendly, quiet 4-stroke
motors power these rugged rafts
specially built for Western.
GUESTS RAVE ABOUT OUR RAFTS »
“Your J-Rig and all of the equipment you supplied were top
quality. The design of your J-Rig provided both maximum
comfort for the less adventuresome and exhilarating thrills
for the white water fans.”

products will help keep you smiling every second of your adventure. These
items are durable, comfortable and affordable. Additional products are

Swimming suits and quick-drying shorts and t-shirts are the basics
although you should prepare for all types of weather. Since storms can
appear and disappear in no time, a rain suit is essential on the river – even
in summer. The rainsuit also protects you from the splashing waves on
cool mornings and earlier season trips. To find a complete list of what to
bring, or to shop online, please visit www.westernriver.com/store.
GRATUITIES » Your guides will make every effort to see that the trip is
enjoyable and successful. Gratuities for guides are greatly appreciated
and at your discretion, as a gesture of thanks for their professionalism
and service. A suggested guideline is 10 percent of the trip cost. The common practice is to give the gratuity to the trip leader on the last night. It
will later be divided equally with the rest of the crew.
