Producers have said, “If I could just find that silver bullet in my crop production……”
AGRIS Co-operative and Wanstead Farmers’ Co-operative crop sales specialists are
continuously learning through our “On-Farm Discovery Trials,” on seed, plant health
and plant food, which offerings provide solutions to enhancing yield.
Today, we are not only gaining yield through improved seed varieties/hybrid on your
fields, but through the seed treatments. We think the most important contributors to
increasing yields are seedling health and vigour given through seed treatments.
Worldwide research increasingly points to root health as the key for future crop
productivity improvements.
It is estimated that 80 per cent of all plant problems are related to root or soil
conditions. Seed treatments are vital in controlling diseases and insects and thereby
increasing seedling plant health and final plant stand. Let’s look at some of the new
seed treatment offerings through our seed companies.
AG
DEKALB® Genuity® SmartStax® hybrid seed corn is treated with Acceleron®
Poncho®/VOTiVO®. (see Fig. 1below for details). The Poncho/VOTiVO component
employs a biological mode of action with a unique bacteria strain that lives and grows
with young roots, creating a living barrier that prevents nematodes from causing
damage. It also has a systemic agent that’s absorbed by new roots immediately,
providing control of many critical early-season insect pests.
This dual protection results in healthier plant establishment and a more uniform crop,
positively impacting yields. In more than 150 replicated soybean field trials in 2011 and
2012, Poncho/VOTiVO provided an average yield advantage of 1.5 to 2.5 bushels per acre.
From seed germination to plant establishment, Poncho/VOTiVO secures a foundation for
the best yields.
Only Genuity SmartStax hybrids are treated with Acceleron Poncho/VOTiVO. All other
DEKALB hybrids will be treated with Acceleron/ Poncho 250 only, for added rootworm
protection Poncho 1250 can be requested.

Vibrance™ from Syngenta® is a novel seed care compound for stronger, healthier roots. The active ingredient in
Vibrance is sedaxane, a new mode of action. Syngenta is incorporating Vibrance into a number of its
market-leading seed treatments, further enhancing their Cruiser Maxx Vibrance Beans.
Cruiser Maxx Vibrance Beans seed treatment is a combination of the insecticide thiamethoxam and the
fungicides sedaxane, fludioxonil and metalaxyl-M. This seed care solution optimizes root health by adding the
Vigor Trigger® effect with rooting power. Cruiser Maxx Vibrance Beans protects against soybean aphids and seedand soil-borne diseases such as Rhizoctonia spp., Fusarium spp., Pythium spp. and seed rots in soybeans.
Vibrance penetrates from the seed into the surrounding soil, forming a protective cloud around the seed,
developing roots and the lower stem, which helps to strengthen the plant throughout its growing cycle. The
compound has ideal soil mobility in a wide range of soil types.
Fig. 1 illustrates the target control of each product. All in all seed treatments are vital in your crop production
success and is an important component of the “Whole Farm Plan” to maximize production. Contact your local
AGRIS or Wanstead Farmers’ Co-operative for more details. Perhaps your choice of seed treatment is the
“Silver Bullet” in your crop production.
