A History of Picton Harbour
P
“Hallowell”, by W.H. Bartlett, from Canadian Scenery, 1842.
icton Harbour Inn is situated in a particularly strategic and historically significant location, at the head
of Picton Harbour. So important was this site in the early history of Canada, that depictions of it are
included in what are probably the two most important 19th century travelogs of Canada: “Canadian Scenery”,
1842 and “Picturesque Canada”, 1882.
In fact, the site is seen on the sepia wash drawing, entitled “Hallowell”, that graces the front cover of
“Canadian Scenery”. The view is from top of the town hill (where Sir John A. Macdonald’s first law office
stood), and the scene looks down Bridge Street towards the mouth of the harbour, with the church of St.
Mary Magdalene, c1825 (now part of Macauley Heritage Park) and the Court House and Goal, c1832 in the
background. The Picton Harbour Inn is situated where the bridge is visible in front of the figure on horseback.
Picton Harbour was reportedly named “Newaweketonzank” (Sturgeon Cove) by the Mohawks and
“Tsiyodenhoewaladi” (Head of the Bay) by the Mississaqua. Lieutenant Wolvenade Hovenden built an inn
named Hovenden House at the head of Picton Bay in the 1790s. Located at the east end of the portage to West
and East Lakes and Lake Ontario beyond, the settlement grew into the villages of Hallowell on the northwest
side of the bay and Picton on the southeast side. After much controversy, the two incorporated into the town
of Picton in March 1837. The town was named for Major General Sir Thomas Picton, who was second-incommand to the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo and died during the battle in 1815.
Over the years, the harbour has seen native canoes, great sailing vessels, grain schooners, passenger steam
ships and all manner of pleasure craft. Unfortunately, the treacherous shoals off Prince Edward County have
also claimed many ships and lives, making the area one of North America’s most prolific shipwreck dive sites.
The Mariner’s Museum at South Bay houses many artifacts from wrecks and other memorabilia and stories of
the County’s maritime heritage. In addition, The Archives and Collection Society and The Canadian Society of
Marine Artists have a fantastic display of marine and nautical items of interest at 205 Main Street, in Picton.
We have tried to give visitors to Picton Harbour Inn a sense of the area’s rich maritime history. On the walls
of guest rooms and The Lighthouse Restaurant are reproductions of many photographs, engravings and drawings
of Picton Harbour scenes, lighthouses of Prince Edward County and ships built here and sailed on the Great
Lakes.
We hope you enjoy your visit to the Picton Harbour Inn and that you will visit us again soon.
