For Release: October 7, 2014 Concept Becomes Reality as Sod is Turned for Age-in-Place Facility Picton, ON – Today, a sod-turning ceremony officially launched construction on the future site of a much anticipated Age in Place Development. Mayor Peter Mertens and members of Council were joined by Todd Smith - MPP Prince Edward Hastings, Nautical Lands Group President and CEO Kirk Hoppner, and County staff. The County’s Age-in-Place concept envisions a seniors’ community that will encourage active living and integration into the community, while facilitating residents’ transition into increasing levels of assisted living if required as they age. Nautical Lands Group is the first developer selected by the County to purchase municipal lands adjacent to the McFarland Home and make the Age-in-Place concept a reality. Phase 1 of the Age-in-Place concept will involve the construction of “Wellings of Picton”, a 144-unit residential development located to the northwest of the H.J. McFarland Memorial Home. Initially, 88 units will be built over the next 18 months, followed by an additional 56 units as part of a second stage of building. This residential development is only one component of this private development that is seeing The County’s Age-in-Place concept come to life. Phase II will result in the construction of new offices for the Prince Edward Family Health Team on the same site, and could also see additional housing units, medical and para-medical services located on the property. “As the County has one of the oldest populations in the province, this development will help meet the growing need for seniors’ housing and services. However, the Agein-Place concept will benefit not only seniors but the community as a whole,” says Mayor Peter Mertens. The location will provide easy access to local goods and services, while at the same time helping to ease pressures on the hospital and longterm care by providing increasing levels of assisted living.” “In 2012, the Age-in-Place concept was identified by Staff and Council as both a need and an opportunity that could benefit the County community,” says CAO Merlin Dewing. “After two years of planning, we are pleased to see construction begin and make our vision a reality.” “Wellings of Picton” is being constructed by Nautical Lands Group, a company that has successfully built and filled retirement communities and residences in several locations throughout Ontario. - 30 – Contact information on reverse.
